Verizon pushes One UI 4.0 update to Galaxy S21 in the US

Samsung is getting better than ever when it comes to software updates. Yesterday, the company released the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update to the international variants of the Galaxy S21 series. Today, Verizon has joined Samsung in releasing the update to the carrier-locked versions of the smartphones.

Verizon has revealed on its website that it has released the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update to Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra units on its network in the US. The latest update comes with firmware version G99xUSQU4BUK7 and includes the November 2021 security patch that fixes dozens of privacy and security-related vulnerabilities.

If you are a Galaxy S21 series smartphone user on Verizon’s network in the US, you might have received a notification of the new update. If you haven’t received it yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install on your smartphone.

It is unprecedented to see Verizon release a major Android OS update to smartphones on its network on the same day as the international versions received it. Samsung may have worked closely with Verizon to make this happen. Usually, there is a delay of at least a few days before carrier-locked Galaxy devices get a new update.

The One UI 4.0 update brings a revamped UI design, Material You-inspired color themes, improved widgets, a new widget picker UI, improved privacy and security, and more feature-rich stock apps. The update also brings dozens of new and nifty features to make your experience better.

Galaxy S10 Lite gets November 2021 security update

Samsung surprised everyone yesterday by releasing the stable version of the Android 12 update to the Galaxy S21. Today, the company has released the November 2021 security update to the Galaxy S10 Lite.

The latest software update for the Galaxy S10 Lite comes with firmware version G770FXXS6EUK1. The update comes with the November 2021 security patch that fixes dozens of vulnerabilities found in Android and Galaxy devices in general. While we don’t have the changelog for the update yet, it might also contain device stability improvements.

The new update is currently available in Spain, but it should expand to more markets over the next few weeks. If you are in Spain and have a Galaxy S10 Lite, you can check for the update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy S10 Lite in early 2020 with Android 10-based One UI 2. The company released the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update to the smartphone earlier this year. The device will get at least one major Android OS update in the future.

Samsung’s Android 12 release for Galaxy S21 humbles all other OEMs

We were hoping for One UI 4.0 to launch in November after a Samsung Community Manager hinted at a possible early release, and sure enough, the update went live today for the Galaxy S21 series worldwide. The One UI 4.0 update introduces new customization options, new privacy settings, as well as other refinements to the user experience and the UI. But aside from the update’s content, what really impressed us this time around was Samsung’s fantastic firmware support and the speed with which it released the first One UI 4.0 public build.

Samsung began testing One UI 4.0 for the Galaxy S21 series in mid-September, which means it took the company only two months to transition from the first beta build to the first public One UI 4.0 release. Samsung was able to roll out the Android 12-based update less than a month after Google launched the firmware for its Pixel phones, so there’s not much the Korean tech giant could’ve done to speed things up even more.

Samsung sets the standard others can’t reach

Last year, the Android 11 update got released for the Galaxy S20 series in December, but Samsung’s software engineers were quicker this time around. The One UI 4.0 update is now available for the Galaxy S21 series, and other devices will follow sooner or later. Let’s hope that they’ll all enjoy the kind of treatment the Galaxy S21 series got and receive One UI 4.0 promptly. If anyone can do it, it’s Samsung.

If you haven’t received One UI 4.0 for the Galaxy S21 yet, keep in mind that the rollout process should gradually expand to more markets. If you need some assistance, you can check our guide on how to install One UI 4.0.

Google’s reportedly shelving its Pixel Fold plans, letting Samsung thrive

Google doesn’t see much profit in pursuing foldable devices yet, and the company has reportedly shelved its plans for the so-called Pixel Fold until further notice. According to a new report from DSCC, Google canceled parts orders and won’t be releasing the Pixel Fold this year or in the first half of 2022.

Google’s plans for the foldable segment are now pretty much up in the air, at least as far as foldable Pixel hardware is concerned. Of course, the company just unveiled the fold-centric Android 12L mobile OS version a few weeks ago, and Google should continue improving the platform, but its hardware plans are now reportedly on hold.

The company won’t release the so-called Pixel Fold before the first half of 2022, and there’s no guarantee that H2 will look any different. Here’s what Google’s thinking.

The market’s not big enough yet for both Samsung and Google

The rumored Pixel Fold was being developed with help from Samsung’s component supply chain. The device was said to share a few similarities with the Galaxy Z fold 3, particularly around the display area, as it would boast UTG, an LTPO backplane, and 120Hz capabilities. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is very popular for a device of its type, but of course, if Google will eventually get back on track and release its first foldable phone, it could be very different than the original vision.

As to the reasons behind Google’s alleged decision, well, the company reportedly doesn’t feel like going against Samsung in the niche foldable device segment is a wise idea. It views this as a costly endeavor that doesn’t offer enough revenue avenues, and Google seems happy with letting Samsung lead the segment for the time being, which it does. The company also launched a dedicated website for Samsung’s new foldable phones, so it seems like Google wants this device category to succeed but doesn’t want to commit to it yet.

These Good Lock modules fully support One UI 4.0

The highly anticipated One UI 4.0 firmware update went live for the Galaxy S21 series today, and Good Lock users might be wondering what modules are now fully supported by the first public Android 12-based firmware version. A few modules got updated with One UI 4.0 support throughout the beta period, but testing is over.

The list of Good Lock modules that already offer compatibility with One UI 4.0 includes LockStar, ClockFace, MultiStar, NavStar, SoundAssistant, Keys Cafe, Theme Park, Nice Catch, and QuickStar, the latter of which was added to the beta program a couple of weeks ago.

The first public One UI 4.0 build for the Galaxy S21 series should also be compatible with Good Lock modules such as Routine+, One Hand Operation+, Pentastic, Wonderland, and Edge Touch, as they were available throughout the beta period. If your favorite module isn’t on this list, it may be added at a later date, though there’s no guarantee of this yet. And in case we missed a supported module, feel free to let us know in the comment section below.

Good Lock is a platform for experimental features, and it sadly isn’t available everywhere. You could be running One UI 4.0 on your Galaxy S21 without ever knowing about Good Lock modules, but we’re still hoping that Samsung will eventually make this platform available to more Galaxy phone customers in additional markets. Stay tuned and you’ll know when that happens.

OnePlus may want to rival Samsung in 2022 by immitating it more

Samsung may have inspired OnePlus to rethink the launch schedule for its next flagship phone, the OnePlus 10. Earlier this year, Samsung decided to release the Galaxy S21 series ahead of the usual timeframe as a way to counter Apple’s latest iPhones. The strategy seems to have worked out, and now, OnePlus is reportedly planning to use a similar strategy against Samsung.

The OnePlus 10 series should have been planned for release around March 2022, exactly one year after the OnePlus 9 lineup debuted. However, according to a recent report, the OEM intends to unveil the 10 series in January or February, presumably in an attempt to divert the public’s attention away from Samsung’s upcoming flagships.

The Galaxy S22 series is expected to be unveiled in early February and hit the shelves later the same month. It should consist of the Galaxy S22, the Galaxy S22+, and the Galaxy S22 Ultra featuring a dedicated S Pen. Samsung is also likely to launch the Galaxy S21 FE in January, so all eyes will be fixed on the Korean tech giant throughout the first quarter of next year.

OnePlus kind of lost what made it interesting after the release of the Galaxy A52 5G, which proves Samsung’s capable of developing an affordable mid-range phone packed full of great features. The Chinese company was also criticized for its revamped update policy, which doesn’t look as good next to Samsung’s. With that in mind, it wouldn’t surprise us the report is accurate and OnePlus plans to challenge Samsung with an early 2022 release of its next flagship series.

Disney jumps on foldables with Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel / Star Wars Editions

Samsung announced a couple of Disney-themed accessories for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 last month, and it turns out that those accessories were a part of more comprehensive Special Edition packages that are now available for purchase in Singapore. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are offered online exclusively through Shopee.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are worth $1,522 each, but Shopee is offering them in exchange for $1,298. Early adopters also had the opportunity to drop the price further down to $1,111.

What’s included in the Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition Galaxy Z Flip 3?

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are similar in that they both include the 128GB foldable phone, a Silicone Cover with Strap, and a Marvel / Star Wars themed lanyard strap. The device is also accompanied by a Shopee power bank, which should help users alleviate one of the biggest concerns regarding the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s performance: battery life.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Marvel Edition and Star Wars Edition are available in different colors and have a shipping timeframe of roughly two weeks. There’s no word on whether these editions will be sold outside of Singapore, but we’ll keep you posted if we find out more. Until then, you can check our Galaxy Z Flip 3 review and our hands-on video below if you’re looking for more information on what it’s like living with this device.

Surprise update brings Watch 4 features to older Galaxy smartwatches

Galaxy S21 owners aren’t the only Samsung customers who can enjoy new software features starting today. Along with the first public One UI 4.0 update for the Galaxy S21 series, today Samsung’s releasing new firmware for a handful of its smartwatches. It adds almost a dozen new watch faces and improvements to Fall Detection.

Samsung’s making the update available for the Galaxy Watch and Watch 3, as well as the Galaxy Watch Active and its sequel. It includes ten new watch faces that debuted with the Galaxy Watch 4, some of which offer deep customization options.

On the more practical side, the update borrows from the Galaxy Watch 4 in the way of adding advanced Fall Detection with more sensitivity levels and the option to enable detection when the wearer is standing still.

The update is live for you today if you meet these criteria

Samsung makes it clear that availability may differ by market and operator, but the plan is to release the update for the Bluetooth versions of the Galaxy Watch, Watch 3, Watch Active, and Watch Active 2 first. This phase begins today in the USA and Korea. The Bluetooth versions in other markets, along with the LTE variants everywhere, should receive the same update shortly after.

Of course, advanced Fall Detection will be coming to smartwatch models that already have the Fall Detection feature, meaning the Galaxy Watch Active 2, the Watch 3. Samsung left out the Galaxy Watch and Watch Active for obvious reasons. But luckily, fans who rock these models can look forward to the ten new watch faces included with the update.

Customers in the USA and Korea can check for the update today via the Wearable app on their connected smartphone. Join us on our social media networks and you won’t miss out on future updates.

Here’s how you can install the One UI 4.0 Android 12 update on Galaxy S21

The One UI 4.0 beta program for the Galaxy S21 series has ended after a couple of months of testing in select markets, and the first public build is now rolling out worldwide. The Android 12-based firmware is packed full of UI tweaks, privacy improvements, and other enhancements, all of which can now be experienced by Galaxy S21 owners exclusively.

Samsung will release the update to more Galaxy smartphones and tablets in the following weeks and months. For now, the Galaxy S21 has the privilege of being the first and only device in Samsung’s portfolio to run a stable version of One UI 4.0. So, without further ado, here’s all you need to know about installing the first public One UI 4.0 build on the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and/or Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Download and install One UI 4.0 on the Galaxy S21 series

One UI 4.0 is officially rolling out worldwide, but even though Samsung began seeding the update today, it will take a while before it reaches the Galaxy S21 series in every market.

Some regions have priority over others, and carrier variants usually receive the update after unlocked devices, though it’s not a rule. If you haven’t received the notification for One UI 4.0 yet, don’t worry. It should reach your device soon — in the coming days or possibly weeks.

Where available, One UI 4.0 can be acquired like any other firmware update for Galaxy smartphones. You can tap the update notification when it arrives or attempt to trigger the update process through the Settings app. Launch it, then access Software updates and tap Download and install. The update may or may not be waiting for you, depending on the factors mentioned above, so you’ll have to verify.

If you’re willing to put in a bit of extra work to skip the wait, there’s an alternative method of getting the update up and running on the Galaxy S21. You can download the update files from the firmware section on our website and install One UI 4.0 manually using a Windows PC. We host Samsung firmware files for a wide variety of Galaxy S21 model numbers and markets as soon as they’re available, so make sure to check back with our firmware page regularly.

BREAKING: Galaxy S21 series One UI 4.0 update now rolling out globally!

Today is a big day for fans of firmware updates and Android 12 enthusiasts, as One UI 4.0 is leaving the beta program behind to roll out live for the Galaxy S21 series worldwide.

The beta program began in mid-September for the Galaxy S21 lineup in select markets and consisted of a few waves. Samsung aimed for a 2021 release for the first public build and hinted at a November release — something it just achieved.

Of course, the anticipated Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update isn’t rolling out everywhere simultaneously, but it will gradually reach more regions in the upcoming days and weeks. So, if you are waiting for the update to arrive, be patient, and sooner or later, you’ll get that notification. We also host the files on our website, so feel free to check our firmware section regularly.

For now, One UI 4.0 is available only for the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy S21+, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra, but this exclusivity won’t last for long. Dozens of other Galaxy smartphones and tablets that are eligible for the update will follow, but it’s going to be a relatively lengthy process. Some devices will get priority over others, and no concrete roadmap exists yet. We will keep you up to speed as soon as we find out more.

A quick overview of some of the most interesting One UI 4.0 features

We had discussed all the new changes and features in One UI 4.0, big and small, shortly after the first beta build went live, and we counted over 60. Likewise, we covered our top 5 features in One UI 4.0, so make sure to check our videos below if you’re looking for a quick overview of the new firmware while you wait for your Galaxy S21 to update.

One UI 4.0 is based on Android 12, which means it borrows a few fundamental ideas from Google’s latest update. The new Color Theme option takes from Material You and opens up new personalization options, but there are numerous other changes and refinements throughout the UI.

Samsung added new privacy and security features that give users more control over app privileges, and all the settings and controls are now neatly organized in a new privacy dashboard.

Let us know if you got the update, and feel free to tell us more about your favorite One UI 4.0 features in the comment section below and our social media channels.

Samsung’s secret chipset plan for 2022 devices leaked

With no Samsung flagship devices left for the year, all eyes are now on the 2022 lineup. It’s going to be another busy year for Samsung with dozens of new smartphone and tablet launches. New foldables will also be in the mix.

Chipsets are an essential component of every device. Samsung does make its own chipsets but it also sources them from other manufacturers. A new report today brings us a purportedly leaked Samsung chipset plan for its 2022 devices.

What chipsets is Samsung using for its 2022 devices?

Samsung is reportedly going to launch 64 models of smartphones and tablets in 2022. Qualcomm’s chipsets are expected to be used in 31 of those models. The next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 processor will be used for the Galaxy S22 series. It’s believed that the Galaxy S22 FE will utilize the Exynos 2200.

In some markets, the Galaxy S22 series will also ship with Samsung’s own Exynos 2200 processor. The new Exynos chipset that Samsung is developing with AMD is reportedly going to be used in 20 models. MediaTek chipsets will be used for 14 models while 3 will feature a UNISOC processor.

Samsung has only used Qualcomm chipsets for its foldable smartphones so far and that’s likely not changing next year. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are both expected to come with the Snapdragon 898.

The company’s own Exynos chipsets will be used in most of its low-end and mid-range Galaxy M and Galaxy A handsets. Only a few from this lineup will get MediaTek processors. The Galaxy Tab S8 series is expected to use Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chipset as well.

With supplies still remaining an issue in the semiconductor market, the plans could change as we go into the new year. It’s all within the realm of possibility right now, though.

Samsung boss could confirm $17 billion plant location at his latest U.S. visit

Multiple reports have speculated that Samsung’s $17 billion plant in the continental United States is all but official. Samsung has looked at multiple locations, including New York, but appears to have settled for Texas. We could be closer than ever to an official announcement, as Samsung Electronics chairman Jay Lee has reportedly visited the United States.

South Korean news outlet Yonhap reports that Lee could finalize the deal during his visit, but declined to elaborate any further. If the information is true, it shouldn’t be long before Samsung makes it official. Furthermore, Lee has to wrap things up in the United States quickly, as he is due back in South Korea for his court hearing. Kim had the following to say the reporters at KES 2021.

We are trying to make a decision as soon as possible

As mentioned earlier, Samsung has zeroed in on Texas for its lucrative tax benefits. The city of Taylor in Williamson County is one of the potential locations, although Samsung could just expand its Austin facility, which was severely affected by a winter storm recently. The plant is expected to be operational sometime in 2023-24 and will churn out 5nm wafers.

Samsung publishes One UI 4.0 update plan, only to suddenly take it down

Samsung’s One UI 4.0 beta is program is out in full force; it shouldn’t be long before we see a final version of the software hit the airwaves. As always, the Galaxy S21 series will get it first, followed by previous-generation flagships. Twitter leaker FrontTron has now stumbled upon a now-deleted post detailing the One UI 4.0 roadmap.

The Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra will get the stable One UI 4.0 update in November 2021. December 2021 will be jam packed, with the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 20, Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G slated to receive the software.

January 2021 will also be dominated by older flagship smartphones, such as the original Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Note 10+ and the entire Galaxy S10 series. They will be joined by mid-rangers such as the Galaxy A52s 5G, Galaxy A42 5G, and more. Refer to the attached image for the complete rollout plan.

Do note that the list is incomplete and is missing several devices. We have compiled a list of devices that are eligible for the One UI 4.0 update. Samsung’s roadmaps are very often tentative and subject to last-minute changes due to bugs. Besides, every region has a different rollout, which is further influenced by factors such as carrier preferences.

Galaxy A33 gets a few upgrades but the battery isn’t one of them

It first emerged about two months ago that Samsung has the Galaxy A33 in the pipeline. It’s the successor to the Galaxy A32 that was launched earlier this year. As you’d expect, this will be a mid-range device that offers decent specs at an affordable price.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen more information about the device come up. Samsung is going to upgrade several bits and pieces on the device. There’s one bit that it’s not upgrading and that is the battery.

Galaxy A33 has the same battery capacity as its predecessor

Our friends over at GalaxyClub have discovered the South Korean certification for the Galaxy A33’s battery. It bears part number EB-BA336ABY and has a 5,000mAh capacity. That’s exactly the same as the Galaxy A32.

To be fair, 5,000mAh is a good enough battery capacity, particularly for a mid-range device. So Samsung has essentially taken the approach of not trying to fix something that’s not broken. The 5,000mAh battery was enough for the Galaxy A32. No reason why it shouldn’t be enough for the Galaxy A33.

However, Samsung is making one change on the device that some fans may not like. Leaked Galaxy A33 renders have revealed that the device won’t have a headphone jack. Samsung is clearly adding the device to the list of mid-range phones without a headphone jack.

The Galaxy A33 will be a 5G-enabled device. It’s unclear when Samsung is planning to launch it. Given the fact that the Galaxy A32 was launched in February 2021, we might see a similar launch timeline for its successor next year.

Galaxy Buds Pro could end up damaging way more than your wallet

The Galaxy Buds Pro is undoubtedly one of the better TWS earbuds out there, as determined by our in-depth review. However, Android Central’s Chris Wedel has had a less than stellar experience. The worst part is, it doesn’t involve bad ANC or audio quality issues, but physical irritation that required the intervention of a physician.

A Reddit user has had a similar experience, along with several other South Korean netizens (via Olhar Digital, ITHome). All of the aforementioned people have experienced irritation in their ears after using the Galaxy Buds Pro for extended periods.

Have you experienced something similar with the Galaxy Buds Pro?

Initially, the tips were thought to be the root cause, but replacing them multiple times, even with third-party alternatives, did little to alleviate the allergies.

While it isn’t immediately clear as to what causes the said irritation, it could be the Acrylate and the Nickel, which are found in the buds’ chassis and charging contact pads, respectively. Now, it is entirely possible that anyone allergic to the aforementioned material will suffer the same fate with other companies’ earbuds, but there have been no recorded instances of that happening so far.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Buds Pro’s tight fit is also a contributing factor. That, coupled with sweat and moisture, allegedly causes irritation. To make matters worse, the degree of the reaction differs on a user-by-user basis. Chris has to contend with a high fever and required antibiotics to deal with the problem. Reddit user u/Graphic_Delusions spent four days in the hospital due to severe Cellulitis, which is a serious skin infection.

For what it’s worth, Samsung offered Chris (and a few other affected users) a full refund for their Galaxy Buds Pro and the medical costs incurred due to the allergy. However, that isn’t nearly enough as the earbuds can still potentially affect others. Samsung’s official website does not mention allergic reactions, so there’s no way for a potential user to know of the risks associated with using the earbuds.

In conclusion, if you’re allergic to certain materials, exercise caution before picking up a pair of Galaxy Buds Pro. One can only hope that Samsung adds warnings to the product page sooner rather than later. All it takes is for one reaction to turn fatal, and that’s the last thing anybody wants. Some users have already taken Samsung to court for the said reactions, so it shouldn’t be long before we see some changes.
