New ads put the spotlight back on the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+

Given that some new flagship handsets like the latest iPhones or the new Lumia flagships from Microsoft are hogging the spotlight these days it’s not wrong for Samsung to want some attention for its flagship devices as well. Samsung today released two new ads which try to put the spotlight back on the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ while trying to convince potential customers that these two handsets have all the features that they could possibly want.

The new ad for the Galaxy Note 5 tells a story in one minute, from the woman getting fired to founding her own startup and securing funding for that said startup. Despite the story the Galaxy Note 5 remains the focus throughout the entire ad with features like the ability to take a memo with the S Pen even the screen is off getting extra attention. It’s just a 30-second spot for the Galaxy S6 edge+ which focuses on how beautiful the handset is and just how capable the camera is, two of the biggest selling features for this device which is essentially a larger version of the Galaxy S6 edge.

Samsung clarifies that attack on LoopPay was limited to its office network and didn’t impact Samsung Pay at all

The New York Times reported today that LoopPay was hit with a cyberattack earlier this year and that the attackers were presumably after the company’s magnetic secure transmission technology which is essential to Samsung Pay. As many of you might be aware Samsung acquired LoopPay back in February and used its technology to make Samsung Pay work with existing card terminals, giving its payments service a major leg up on the competition.

Samsung was quick to issue a clarification, the company says that the attacked targeted LoopPay’s office network and that Samsung Pay was not impacted at all, personal payment information of users was never at risk at any point. It says that this was an isolated incident on the office network which is physically separate from Samsung Pay, the incident was resolved and “had nothing to do with Samsung Pay.” Samsung further explains that LoopPay’s office network handles file servers, printing and email within the company and that it’s completely separate from the product network that handles payment transactions, that network is run by Samsung. The company says that LoopPay was quick to respond when the attack was discovered and it “acted immediately and comprehensively.” It reiterates multiple times that Samsung, Samsung Pay and Samsung users were not affected at any point, the company remains confident that Samsung Pay is safe and secure and be used almost anywhere you can swipe or tap a card today, as long as you’re in South Korea and the United States.

FCC listing reveals dimensions of the Galaxy View, AT&T likely to carry it in the US

Not too long ago Samsung teased an entirely new product called the Galaxy View, it’s the 18.4-inch tablet that we exclusively reported on over a month back. Over the past few weeks there have been several leaks which have revealed some new information about this tablet, today an FCC listing has been spotted which not only gives us the dimensions of this massive tablet but also hints at the possibility of AT&T carrying it in the United States.

The filing shows that the Galaxy View model SM-T677A will be headed to the US, illustration of the tablet carries an AT&T logo on the back which is a strong indicator that the country’s number two carrier will sell this device but it’s unclear right now if the Galaxy View will be exclusive to AT&T. We also see two large speaker grilles on the back which could mean that the tablet brings powerful stereo audio. From corner to corner the Galaxy View measures 513mm diagonally and it’s 447mm wide, certainly not one of the most portable tablets out there. As far as the specifications are concerned the Galaxy View is believed to feature a 1920×1080 pixel resolution display with an octa-core Exynos processor paired with 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and a 5,700mAh battery.

Samsung rumored to launch three Galaxy S7 variants, each with a different processor

We had reported yesterday that Samsung is currently optimising its brand new Exynos 8890 SoC with Mongoose CPU cores for better performance, and that it might be used in the Galaxy S7 next year. Now, we are back with yet another important piece of information regarding the Galaxy S7 and the chipsets that might be used in different variants of the device.

According to the information that we’ve received today, Samsung might launch three different processor variants of the Galaxy S7. Remember the Exynos 7422 chipset that was supposed to debut with the Galaxy Note 5? Well, Samsung supposedly has plans to launch a variant of the Galaxy S7 with that chipset in India. The Exynos 8890 (a.k.a Exynos M1)-powered variant of the device is expected to be launched in Korea, Japan, and the European markets. On the other hand, the Galaxy S7 variant that will be available to consumers in China and the US will feature a Snapdragon 820 SoC.

If this information turns out to be correct, it would be the first time that Samsung would launch a flagship smartphone with three different processor variants. However, even if the company manages to launch the device earlier than usual, the Galaxy S7 is still months away from being finalised. A lot of things could be changed till then, and a lot of decisions could be altered within the company, so we advise you to take this report with a pinch of salt

Samsung patents new screen designs with curved edges at the top and bottom

Samsung introduced the curved-edge display with the Galaxy Note Edge, and then improved it with the Galaxy S6 edge. Now, Samsung wants to take the curved edge display scheme to a new level with a couple of brand new patents that are showing some interesting concepts.

If you can recall, there have been some interesting designs from the company as of late. All these patents suggest that Samsung is up to something, and we could witness a whole different display in 2016, but probably not on the Galaxy S7. One interesting patent shows an angular bottom, but every concept shows a straight edge. We can see how a bottom edge would be more practical than a side edge, but it depends. It does look like a curved device on the upper and lower side would be easier to handle around.

We’d certainly be interested in seeing a new screen design, plus Samsung’s foldable display concept, but it will probably be a while until we see such devices in the wild. The recent influx of patents suggests that Samsung is in fact working on something new, but we most likely won’t be seeing anything until 2016. Check out the concept images below:

Samsung’s Q3 2015 earnings guidance predicts first profit growth in a couple of years

Samsung has had a tough few quarters owing to increased competition in the low-end and mid-range segments of the market while it struggles to maintain momentum in the high-end market segment. All of this has contributed to seven straight quarters of year-over-year profit decline but things might finally be looking up for the company, Samsung today announced its Q3 2015 earnings guidance which predicts the first quarterly profit growth for the company in two years.

The company expects to have brought in 7.3 trillion won or $6.27 billion in operating profit in Q3 2015 on sales of 51 trillion won or $43.8 billion. If these are confirmed as final figures it would mean that Samsung is back to profit growth after quite a few quarters where it saw profits declining. Samsung brought in revenue of 47.4 trillion won during the same time last year with profits standing at 4.1 trillion won, if its prediction is correct then the company will see a year-over-year profit growth of 78% and revenue growth of about 8%. In its earnings guidance the company didn’t reveal what contributed to this potential quarterly profit growth, Samsung might go into the details when it formally announces the quarter’s results.
