Global TV war between Samsung and LG starts to heat up for 2020

Samsung and LG unveiled their 2020 TV lineups earlier this year during CES 2020, but they were unable to sell those TVs due to the COVID-19 lockdown. As social distancing restrictions have started to ease in various countries across the globe, the companies have begun preparations to sell their new TV models.

According to reports coming out of South Korea, the usual time frame for the launch of new TVs from Samsung is by the end of March. However, due to COID-19, the company had to face delays. Now, the company is under the process of replacing older TVs with the newer ones in the stores. It is also planning to carry out offline events, marketing, and promotions over the next few weeks. LG has similar plans as well.

Industry insiders believe that stores will go into normal operations by the end of this month. Best Buy opened 200 stores in the US earlier this month and has plans to open the rest of its retail stores over the next few weeks. Dixon, MediaMarkt, and Media Expert have announced their plans to open their stores soon. We might see a TV war between Samsung and LG as they try to convince consumers to spend on their respective TVs starting next month.

Both LG and Samsung will compete in the premium TV segment with their newly announced high-end products. Both the firms will try to have the upper hand with their OLED and QLED TVs. Samsung expanded its 8K QLED TV lineup this year and unveiled more lifestyle TVs such as The Frame, The Sero, and The Serif. On the other hand, LG unveiled eight new 8K TVs (two OLED TVs and six NanoCell TVs) for 2020.

Samsung and LG will face fierce competition from each other as both firms focus on improved picture quality, higher brightness, faster refresh rate, beefier processors, AI-powered 8K upscaling, faster connectivity, and better software. Both companies have started implementing AirPlay 2, Alexa, Google Assistant, HomeKit, and smart home integration in their TVs.

Samsung is the currently only brand that’s offering Apple Music on its TV, and it has announced its plans to provide innovative health and fitness videos via the Samsung Health app for the TV. The South Korean tech giant is also banking on features like No Gap wall mount, simpler remote, One Connection, AI-powered audio technologies, and various eye safety certifications.

Samsung ships more 5G smartphones worldwide than any other brand in Q1 2020

Since the introduction of the Galaxy S10 5G last year, Samsung has launched multiple 5G smartphones. In fact, the South Korean smartphone giant currently has the biggest 5G smartphone lineup compared to any other brand, and that seems to be paying off. According to new data, Samsung shipped more 5G phones globally than any other brand during the first quarter of 2020.

The Korea Herald’s report states that Samsung shipped around 8.3 million 5G smartphones worldwide during Q1 2020, topping the list. It captured 34.4 percent of the 5G smartphone market share during the quarter, defeating the likes of Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Huawei was a close second, shipping around 8 million 5G phones and capturing 33.2 percent of the market.

Vivo, Xiaomi, and OPPO reportedly managed to ship 2.9 million, 2.5 million, and 1.2 million 5G smartphone units, respectively, around the world. A total of 24.1 million 5G smartphones were shipped around the globe in Q1 2020, and that number is poised to grow in the coming quarters as more markets get access to 5G networks.

Affordable 5G devices and more 5G networks to fuel 5G smartphone growth

Until earlier this year, Samsung only offered 5G versions of its high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S20, and Galaxy Fold. However, it recently launched 5G variants of its mid-range smartphones, like the Galaxy A51 and the Galaxy A71. The company’s own Exynos 980 chipset with an integrated 5G modem powers these mid-range 5G phones.

Samsung is also planning to launch a 5G version of the Galaxy Z Flip later this year. With the introduction of affordable 5G integrated mobile chipsets, relatively cheaper 5G phones will be launched in the coming months, leading to higher 5G smartphone adoption across the world.

Samsung’s best-selling phone in the US last quarter isn’t one you’d expect

Samsung launched some of its best smartphones in the first quarter of this year. The entire Galaxy S20 lineup set the tone for 2020 flagship launches. Samsung also wowed with the Galaxy Z Flip, a clamshell foldable smartphone that has been well received.

However, none of these devices were among Samsung’s best-selling phones in the United States last quarter. The answer might actually surprise you.

It wasn’t one from the Galaxy S20 series

Counterpoint Research’s latest report highlights that smartphone sales declined 21 percent year-over-year in the United States this past quarter compared to Q1 2019. This is largely due to the COVID19 pandemic which had started causing disruptions since the start of the year. With states gradually issuing stay-at-home orders, carriers and retailers saw foot traffic decline and that impacted overall smartphone sales.

While Apple only saw a 13 percent decline in sales during Q1 2020 compared to last year, Samsung’s sales were down 23 percent, according to the research firm. It didn’t help that the Galaxy S20 series got off to a slow start and the coronavirus was declared a global pandemic not too long after it hit the market.

Many analysts are now of the view that the Galaxy S20 series may not be able to outsell its predecessor. The Galaxy Z Flip is too much of a niche device and has been made available in limited quantities, so it couldn’t really be Samsung’s best-selling phone of the quarter.

As always, the iPhone leads the list of top five smartphones by sales during the quarter. The iPhone 11, 11 Pro Max and iPhone XR take the first three spots respectively. The Galaxy A10e was Samsung’s top and the fourth overall best-selling smartphone in the country this past quarter. It’s trailed by the Galaxy A20 in fifth place.

This is the first quarter that devices from the affordable Galaxy A series have made it to the top five sellers list. Samsung has taken notice of this shift in consumer behavior and launched its 2020 Galaxy A series in the United States. It’s even bringing 5G models of the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71, giving customers who want to experience 5G without paying through the nose for a flagship device more affordable options.

It goes without saying that the pandemic is going to have a negative impact on smartphone sales going forward as well. People will be wary about spending more money than what’s necessary on a smartphone in these times, as livelihoods come under threat for millions. In such an environment, the more affordable options may continue to outsell Samsung’s premium devices.

Latest Samsung Internet beta brings a couple of improvements

Samsung Internet is arguably one of the most feature-packed browsers and the company does a good job of regularly rolling out new features as well. It operates a beta program for the browser so that users who want to test new features before they’re released to the public can do so.

To that end, the company today released a new version of Samsung Internet beta which brings a couple of improvements to the browser. The latest beta is out now and available for download.

New Samsung Internet beta is rolling out

As per the changelog, Samsung Internet beta v12.0.14 gives the browser the ability to open links in Secret Mode from within the context menu. It also makes it possible for more password manager apps to autofill login credentials. Last but not the least, it upgrades the Chromium web engine to v79. Those who are interested in download the latest version can grab the Samsung Internet beta APK from here.

If the beta is not your cup of tea, consider trying out the stable version of Samsung Internet if you haven’t already, it received a substantial update last week. Samsung added a robust new privacy feature to protect users against Back button hijacking. It’s a tactic usually employed by shady sites on the Internet whereby when the user presses the back button, they’re redirected to some other website instead of being able to access the previous page.

The improvements that are part and parcel of today’s beta release should eventually make their way to the stable version as well.

Recent Bixby Routines update added better Galaxy Buds+ integration

A recent Bixby Routines update has added better support for the Galaxy Buds+. Discovered by a Reddit user, Bixby Routines now has a more comprehensive list of actions for the the Galaxy Buds+. The earbuds have their own section in the Bixby Routines list of Then actions, whereas in the past, the Galaxy Buds+ were compatible with Bixby Routines only via simple If conditions based on the fact that they were a Bluetooth device.

We’re not sure exactly which Bixby Routines version added this new Galaxy Buds+ list of actions, but it may have been the same update that introduced the gaming-oriented condition. Either way, it looks like the new actions are available only for the Galaxy Buds+ and don’t work with the original Galaxy Buds. Samsung might change this later down the line, but seeing how this update appears to have been released rather quietly, time will tell.

This new list of actions for the Galaxy Buds+ in Bixby Routines opens up a lot of opportunities to personalize your experience. As exemplified by the source, you can enable Ambient Sound automatically when going outside, enable or disable notification reading, and more. You can also check some of our other Bixby Routines examples that don’t require a pair of Buds+.

To ensure that you have the latest version of Bixby Routines, open the app, tap the three-dot button, access Settings, tap About Bixby Routines and then tap the Update button.

Samsung Display deal may be hurting the mobile division’s foldable plans

One of the main reasons why each UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) panel for the Galaxy Z Flip costs a whopping $40 appears to have surfaced. Korean media reports that Samsung Display got into an exclusivity agreement with UTG manufacturer SCHOTT that had weakened the company’s power to negotiate for a more reasonable price.

It turns out that Samsung Electronics isn’t happy about the prices commanded by Samsung Display for its UTG foldable panels either. According to reports, the mobile division ‘repeatedly’ approached the display manufacturer and asked for a price reduction, but the company never obtained it. Samsung Electronics dug deeper into the issue and found out about the aforementioned exclusivity deal with SCHOTT, said the Korean media.

The exclusivity contract was reportedly signed for a 3-year period

This may very well be the reason why Samsung Electronics is reportedly looking for ways to develop its own UTG panels. About a month ago, news came to light that the mobile division wants to cut its dependency on Samsung Display for foldable glass, seeking to lower manufacturing prices and, in turn, drop the entry barrier for foldable devices.

This could also mean that until Samsung Electronics find another solution to meet its own UTG demands, the company might continue to struggle to lower the production costs of its foldable phones. This struggle and the issues faced by Samsung Display after signing the exclusivity deal with SCHOTT may also be the reason why Samsung’s mobile division is still reportedly undecided as to whether or not it wants to use UTG for the Galaxy Fold 2.

Galaxy Note 20 and Fold 2 variable refresh rate display might trash rivals

The Galaxy Note 20 series might fix one of the bigger issues with Samsung’s 120Hz display implementation and give the competition a run for its money at the same time. According to a new leak shared by Ross Young on Twitter, Samsung is getting ready to add LTPO backplane technology to the upcoming S Pen flagship as well as the Galaxy Fold 2. This will lend variable refresh rate capabilities to the the AMOLED display and improve battery life by anywhere between 15%-20%.

Interestingly enough, the upcoming Apple iPhone is said to lack LTPO technology, with the Cupertino-based company planning to introduce it next year. This will give Samsung’s premium smartphones a leg up over its rival. LTPO would technically allow Samsung’s displays to function at 1Hz when the Always On display mode is active, or crank the refresh rate at up to 120Hz when the situation calls for it, say, when playing mobile games.

Galaxy Note 20 leaks continue – bigger screens, taller aspect ratio

According to the source, the Galaxy Note 20 will have a 6.42-inch display, whereas the Galaxy Note 20+ (not Ultra) will boast a 6.87-inch panel. However, Samsung will apparently maintain last year’s strategy in regards to the pixel count.

The base Galaxy Note 20 model will reportedly have a resolution of 2345 by 1084, leading to an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Same as last year, the larger Galaxy Note 20 model set to be unveiled in August will have a higher pixel count compared to the base variant. This year, the Galaxy Note 20+ will have a slightly taller 19.3:9 aspect ratio with a display resolution of 3096 by 1444.

Both the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+, as well as the Galaxy Fold 2 will reportedly boast LTPO backplane technology, and this could be a game changer in terms of battery life thanks to the variable refresh rate. In other words, the Galaxy Note 20, Note 20+, and Galaxy Fold 2 will have 120Hz displays, but they will be far superior to the 120Hz panels employed by the Galaxy S20 lineup.

Exclusive: Galaxy M51 and M31s in development with 128 gigs of storage

Samsung’s Indian operations took a hit when the country went into lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, but with the Indian government recently easing some restrictions, the Korean giant is starting to get back to its feet. And it seems Samsung is using the opportunity to start developing two new Galaxy M series smartphones for the Indian market – devices with model numbers SM-M515F and SM-M317F, which should be the Galaxy M51 and Galaxy M31s respectively.

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about the Galaxy M51. A couple of months back, 360-degree renders of the upcoming phone had leaked online, but the legitimacy of those renders had seemed doubtful, particularly because they showed the device with two sets of volume rockers. There had also been confusion over whether the device would launch as the Galaxy M51 or the Galaxy M41, though we can now confirm that Samsung will be going with the former.

That makes sense – the M51 is likely going to be a rebranded Galaxy A51 with some hardware and design changes (such as a massive battery), just like last year’s Galaxy M30s shared many of its features with the Galaxy A50s. Unfortunately, we have no information about the spec sheets of the Galaxy M51 or the Galaxy M31s at the moment. All we have been told is that they are being developed with 128GB of storage, though a 64GB variant could show up later, especially for the Galaxy M31s. We’ll let you know once we hear more about these handsets.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE out in Vietnam with $150-worth pre-order gifts

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE is not yet available for purchase in Vietnam but that’s about to change later this month. Starting today, May 11, customers in Vietnam can pre-order the LTE-enabled wearable before going on sale on May 20. Samsung is offering pre-order incentives, with early adopters getting a free pair of AKG N200A earbuds worth VND 3,490,000 ($150).

Samsung Vietnam is releasing three versions of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE. The 40mm and 44mm aluminum models with silicone straps are releasing for VND 8,490,000 ($364) and VND 8,990,000 ($385), respectively, and they can be pre-ordered in black and Rose Gold. Meanwhile, the 44mm steel version with a leather strap is launching only in black for the price of VND 10,990,000 ($471).

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE lets you make remote phone calls

The Bluetooth and LTE Galaxy Watch Active 2 have identical capabilities with the exception that the LTE model supports an e-SIM. Therefore, it lets users handle calls and messages remotely, even when they don’t have their connected smartphones with them. With today’s handsets becoming quite large and relatively uncomfortable to carry around when going for a jog, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE is a great companion for wearers who have an active lifestyle and want to remain connected at all times.

When we first reviewed the Galaxy Watch Active 2, we considered it to be Samsung’s best smartwatch to date. And since it remains the newest smartwatch in the company’s lineup, this statement holds true today. Not only that, but the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is bound to improve further with the addition of a blood pressure monitoring feature that should be released in Q3 2020.

Galaxy A6 (2018) gets Android 10 firmware update at Sprint, Virgin Mobile

After a few months of testing, Samsung had rolled out the Android 10 firmware update for the Galaxy A6 (2018) in Europe earlier this year, and now it looks like the Galaxy A6 (2018) is getting the same Android 10 treatment from Sprint and Virgin Mobile in the USA. The new firmware update carries version number A600PVPU6CTD1.

The Galaxy A6 (2018) was released running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, meaning that Android 10 will be the last major firmware update (to a new OS version) the phone will receive. It’s a pretty big deal for Galaxy A6 (2018) owners, especially since the update also introduces One UI 2.0.

UI redesigns, new emojis, streamlined navigation gestures and more

These are some of the new additions you can expect from the Android 10 firmware update for the Galaxy A6 (2018). We don’t have a full changelog yet, but the latest update is also likely to improve security and stability with the addition of a newer security patch.

To download the Android 10 firmware update on your Galaxy A6 (2018) from Sprint and/or Virgin Mobile in the USA, tap the update notification when it arrives on your phone, or go to Settings » Software update » Download and install. You can also check our firmware archive, download the software package from there, and install it on your Galaxy A6 (2018) using a Windows computer.

There may not be a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra model later this year

Samsung is expected to release two Galaxy Note 20 versions later this year, much like it did with the Galaxy Note 10 lineup in 2019. This means there’s going to be a base model available for a lower price, and a larger sibling with a few additional bells and whistles and/or a different camera setup. There have been a few speculations over the past few weeks as to whether the larger Galaxy Note 20 will be a ‘Plus’ or an ‘Ultra’ model, but now, according to the founder and CEO of DSCC on Twitter, it’s going to be the former.

This could mean the top-tier Galaxy Note 20 won’t have 100x zoom

The Galaxy S20 Ultra might remain in a class of its own even after the launch of the Galaxy Note 20 series later this year, at least as far as camera capabilities go. This expensive and somewhat controversial flagship features a highly ambitious camera setup with 10x hybrid zoom and 100x digital zoom, and as we’ve discussed over the weekend, this is the one main feature we’d like to see being brought over to the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 series.

Not having an Ultra model could very well mean that the Galaxy Note 20 series might not be able to achieve these levels of zoom. More likely, the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20+ could share more similarities with the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+, respectively. On the other hand, the ‘Ultra’ is a new concept in Samsung’s naming convention. It’s only been used once so far, and there’s not enough legacy behind it to guarantee that Samsung won’t abandon the ‘Ultra’ moniker in the future, all the while continuing to push its flagships’ camera capabilities to new heights under the more established ‘Plus’ umbrella. In other words, perhaps we should be cautious of falling for a nominal fallacy when trying to determine the upcoming phone’s camera specifications based on monikers alone.

Whatever the case may be, there have been reports that Samsung is ditching the Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor for the Galaxy Note 20 series, and that’s regardless of how the two models will be called in the end.

Samsung stands to benefit from ongoing data center expansions

As one of the largest manufacturers of memory chips in the world, an uptick in demand is almost always going to benefit Samsung. With major tech companies projected to significantly increase investments in their data centers, Samsung Electronics surely stands to benefit.

This will certainly provide support to the company’s bottom line as the COVID19 pandemic has led to a sharp decline in demand for other products such as mobile devices and appliances. It could take a while before that demand recovers.

Samsung may see more demand for its memory products

Ace investment bank JPMorgan Chase & Co. has projected in a recent report that Facebook, Microsoft, Google and Amazon are all likely to increase their data center investments by almost 40 percent. Their investments in these facilities has increased 6 percent compared to the previous quarter and 40 percent from the same period last year.

With more and more people working from home in addition to those already sheltering in place, online services have seen considerable load spikes. People are streaming more content, universities and schools are offering online classes, video conferencing services have seen double-digit growth. All of this will fuel a need for increased capacity in data centers.

Samsung has itself pointed out that it stands to benefit from this change in market dynamics. The company mentions in its recent earnings report that it expects to see a higher demand for memory chip products for data centers and servers.

Given that the memory chip business already happens to be the company’s cash cow, this should help shore up the company’s balance sheet as it tackles the pandemic’s effect on its business.

Galaxy S20+ camera worse than 2019 Chinese flagships: DxOMark review

Not even four cameras were enough for Samsung’s Galaxy S20+ to beat the photography experience offered by top Chinese smartphones – from last year. In an in-depth review of the recently released Android flagship published today, French imaging authority DxOMark rated the Galaxy S20+ rear cameras as highly “unusual”, relative not just to the competition but Samsung’s own Galaxy S20 Ultra. The most expensive Galaxy S20 model achieved a significantly better score than its Plus-labeled counterpart, scoring 122 instead of 118 points on DxOMark’s non-finite image quality scale.

While there’s no question the Galaxy S20+ is still one of the best mobile photography choices on the market, it’s noticeably worse than even its pricier sibling, who itself lost the title of the world’s best camera smartphone from its predecessor. As a result, no fewer than eight devices from China’s Huawei and its subsidiary Honor, as well as Oppo and Xiaomi, deliver better imaging capabilities than the Galaxy S20+.

The price of Samsung’s “unusual” mobile photography choices

One of the most significant differences DxOMark found is that the detail retention of the Galaxy S20+ is noticeably below that of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. That’s particularly obvious in the smartphone’s ability to perform in less-than-ideal scenarios. With no ability to create super-pixels using so-called pixel-binning tech, Samsung’s phablet pulls out fewer details from low-lit scenes than the likes of the Honor 30 Pro+, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra. When you’re not asking it to perform miracles, it’s largely on pair with its Ultra-dubbed counterpart but still slightly behind Huawei’s latest handsets, as per the same source.

Save for larger noise frequency, the Galaxy S20+ displays its comparatively worse detail retention in numerous edge artifacts that can be seen upon closer inspection of many indoor shots. When looking at its software-produced bokeh, DxOMark rated the device as being “almost” as good as its top rivals, save for its annoying tendency to produce motion blur. Reading between the lines, it appears the Galaxy S20+ doesn’t trust its 12-megapixel 1/1.76-inch main sensor as much as the Ultra relies on the larger 1/1.33-inch 108-megapixel module at the center of its quadruple-camera system. In effect, its AI-guided auto mode usually opts for slower shutter speeds when faced with average or worse lighting, ultimately delivering (partially) blurred photos.

Galaxy Note 10/10+ getting May security update on T-Mobile

T-Mobile started pushing out Samsung’s May 2020 Android security update to the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ units on its network. The former is receiving build N970USQS3CTD3, whereas the package on course for the latter is identified as N975USQS3CTD3. As per usual, the new firmware versions are being rolled out to eligible devices over the air and in a gradual manner. Meaning T-Mobile customers who own one of the two Galaxy Note 10 models can expect to a notification prompting them to download and install the latest patch in the coming days.

Alternatively, users of Samsung’s 2019 flagships who are feeling impatient can download the new software themselves from SamMobile’s firmware archive and manually flash it to their devices from a Windows computer; assuming they’ve double-checked the OTA build versions and made sure they’re compatible with their devices’ model numbers, of course.

May 2020 security patch and nothing else

There are no other features or improvements bundled inside either software upgrade currently hitting the Galaxy Note 10 series on T-Mobile US. That’s neither surprising nor disappointing, as it’s only been two weeks since Samsung’s high-end smartphones received a major OTA update from the wireless carrier. The said firmware jump happened in late April, bringing the highly anticipated One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

That was around the same time Samsung began rolling out today’s May security patch to unlocked variants of the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. Much like it’s always the case, T-Mobile needed time to optimize Samsung’s implementation of the Google-developed software for devices compatible with its network. Relative to the after-sales support most other Android users in the United States are accustomed to, a two-week delay is a neglible setback.

Samsung Electronics now has 5x more investors after latest stock split

Samsung Electronics now has five times more investors than there were two years ago. According to the latest data, the South Korean tech giant has more than 1.36 million investors, which is a 565 percent increase compared to Q1 2018, when there were 241,513 investors.

According to the data filed by Financial Supervisory Service, Samsung Electronics stocks worth KRW 1.25 trillion (around $1.02 billion) were traded daily in the first quarter of this year. This is a 75 percent increase compared to the numbers of the same quarter in 2018.

On May 04, 2018, the company had lowered the face value of its stocks from KRW 5,000 to KRW 100. This decision was reportedly taken to improve the long-term corporate value and to make the purchase of shares more accessible to individual investors.

A common share of Samsung Electronics was traded at KRW 2.65 million before the stock split. After the 50:1 stock spilt, the number of commonly issued shares increased from 128.4 million to 6.42 billion. Each share was worth one-fifth of its original price after the stock split two years ago.

In January 2020, the company’s stock peaked at KRW 62,400, but it is now being traded at KRW 48,400 after the South Korean stock market was hit by COVID-19. Market experts say that Samsung’s stock split saved the company from a further drop in stock prices as more people were able to purchase and trade its shares.
