Galaxy Z Flip teardown reveals fine dust can still get into its hinge

The Galaxy Z Flip is Samsung’s second foldable phone, and the company has learned a lot over the past year and made notable improvements to its hinge and the screen protection. iFixit has now published a video teardown of the Galaxy Z Flip, giving us a detailed look at the phone’s internals.

When Samsung unveiled the smartphone on February 11, it said that the new hinge in the Galaxy Z Flip has a fiber shield that is intended to stop dust from getting inside. The teardown video shows that the phone does really have brushes on the hinge, but they might not be able to stop much fine dust from getting inside the phone.

The folded Galaxy Z Flip was dropped into a bag filled with purple-colored fine dust, and the dust was visible when the device was opened. It was most visible inside the hinge and near the loudspeaker grill. Although the phone isn’t rated for dust and water resistance, it was revealed that Samsung has coated the PCBs with a water-resistant layer, which should stop the phone from getting damaged from water splashes.

The video clearly mentions that the test with purple dust might not be indicative of general day-to-day usage. Samsung might have designed the hinge brushes to keep pocket lint and thicker particles of dust away from the hinge rather than the fine dust that was used in the test.

It is evident that Samsung did some marvelous engineering for both the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Flip, becoming the only brand in the world to be able to launch two foldable phones within a span of a year. While there is scope for improvement, hundreds of thousands of users are pretty happy with their foldable Samsung phones.

Galaxy A71 and Galaxy M31 Indian pricing leaked

Just a few days ahead of the launch of two mid-range Samsung smartphones in the Indian market, their possible prices have been leaked. If a new report from 91Mobiles is to be believed, the Galaxy A71 could carry a price tag of Rs 29,999 in India for the 8GB RAM variant. A separate report from news agency IANS claims that the Galaxy M31 will be launched with a starting price for Rs 15,999.

The Galaxy M31 is due to be launched on the 25th of February, and it could come in two variants: 6GB RAM + 64GB storage and 6GB RAM + 128GB storage. The Galaxy A71, on the other hand, will come in 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM variants in India. Samsung had initially unveiled the Galaxy A71 in the first week of January alongside the Galaxy A51. The pricing should be taken with a grain of salt as 91Mobiles has not always been accurate in the past.

The Galaxy M31 is tipped to feature a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen with Full HD+ resolution and a U-shaped notch for the selfie camera. It will come with a quad-camera setup consisting of a 64MP primary sensor, an ultrawide-angle camera, a macro camera, and a depth sensor. The phone will run Android 10 with One UI 2.0 and come powered by a 6000mAh battery. It will be launched in three colors: black, blue, and red.

The Galaxy A71 is a higher mid-range smartphone featuring a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, an under-display fingerprint reader, a 64MP quad-camera on the rear, and a 32MP selfie camera. It is equipped with the Snapdragon 730 SoC, 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB storage, and a microSD card slot. It is powered by a 4500mAh battery, which supports 25W charging.

Samsung Display commercializes Ultra Thin Glass for foldable devices

Samsung Display has commercialized its Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) technology for foldable smartphones. The glass cover has already been used in the Galaxy Z Flip that was released on February 11 alongside the Galaxy S20 series. The Ultra Thin Glass is used to protect foldable screens from scratches and scuffs.

The South Korean display manufacturing firm, an affiliate of Samsung Electronics, says that Ultra Thin Glass cover is just 30 micrometers thin and it can be mass-produced for various foldable devices and screen sizes. The company claims that it is more durable and scratch-resistant compared to plastic panels used in most other foldable phones. Moreover, it feels like glass on other smartphones, devoid of any bumps and lumps.

The Ultra Thin Glass cover can withstand at least 200,000 folds, which translates to at least four years of usage even if the device is folded and unfolded over a hundred times every day. The South Korean firm said that it has been working on this technology in partnership with glass substrate maker Dowoo Insys Co. since 2013. Samsung Display owns a 27.7 percent share in Dowoo Insys and is the biggest shareholder in the company.

Samsung Display has also released a logo for UTG with the tagline “Tough, yet Tender.” Registration for the ‘Samsung UTG’ trademark has been applied in 38 countries around the world. Sooner or later, the technology could be offered to other smartphone brands who are interested in making foldable devices.

Galaxy S20, Galaxy Z Flip support cross-platform copy and paste with Windows 10

Microsoft and Samsung’s collaborations are deepening with each passing day. Yesterday, it was announced that the companies had worked together to bring RCS messages to Windows 10 via the Your Phone app and the Galaxy S20. Now, the Redmond-based company has mentioned that Samsung’s new flagship smartphones support cross-platform copy and paste with Windows 10.

The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip now support cross-device copy and paste on computers running the Windows 10 operating system. The feature works when the Your Phone app is installed on the PC and is paired with any of the mentioned smartphones from Samsung. You’ll need to turn on the Cross-Device Copy and Paste feature from the Settings menu of the Your Phone app.

This functionality supports both text and images, and you can continue using the same copy and paste shortcuts that you currently use on the phone as well as the PC. However, larger-sized images will be downscaled to 1MB in size. Moreover, if you enable the Sync Over Mobile Data feature in the Your Phone app on your smartphone, copying and pasting images will consume a significant amount of your cellular data.

Over the past few years, Microsoft and Samsung have collaborated closely to bring a lot of features such as OneDrive integration in the Gallery app, S Pen support in the Outlook app, xCloud gaming on Samsung phones, and the recently announced Forza Street game for the South Korean brand’s smartphones.

These Samsung Galaxy phones now support Google Stadia

Smartphones aren’t capable of providing a console-level gaming experience but that’s something that cloud-based game streaming services are out to change. Google’s Stadia is one such service, promising to beam console games to mobile users at 4K resolution and 60 frames-per-second.

It was initially possible to access Google Stadia on the company’s Pixel smartphones only. Google today announced that it’s expanding support for the game streaming service to handsets from other manufacturers. Samsung is one of them and several of its Galaxy phones now have support for Google Stadia.

Samsung Galaxy phones that support Stadia

The idea behind Stadia is that players should be able to play console-quality games with the most basic equipment. So even a reasonably capable phone will be more than enough since none of the heavy lifting to run the game is done on the device itself. All of that is done on Google’s servers, and the megacorp has one of the biggest server networks in the entire world. So the player’s device is effectively streaming an online video and doing none of the work to power the game.

Starting February 20, Stadia will be available on a variety of different smartphones, including several models from Samsung, such as the new Galaxy S20 lineup. These are the Samsung Galaxy phones that have been confirmed for Stadia support. We can expect that at least all upcoming flagships will be a part of this list as well.

  • Galaxy S8/S8+/S8 Active
  • Galaxy S9/S9+
  • Galaxy S10e/S10/S10+
  • Galaxy S20/S20+/S20 Ultra
  • Galaxy Note 8
  • Galaxy Note 9
  • Galaxy Note 10/10+

All that’s needed to play Stadia games on these Samsung Galaxy phones is a fairly decent internet connection and the Stadia app for Android. Google recommends an internet connection of 10Mbps or more as the absolute minimum and a network speed of 35Mbps or more in order to play in 4K resolution. Do note that it’s not possible to stream games from Stadia on a cellular network connection.

Samsung Health gets Dark Mode and minor UI improvements via update

Samsung Health has received a new update that introduces Dark Mode to the app, among other minor UI changes. With Samsung Health version 6.9.0.051, some of the sections located inside the settings menu have been rearranged under different categories, therefore ‘Account and syncing’ has its own category now instead of residing under ‘General.’ Leaderboards and Challenges have also been added under a unified ‘Together’ tab.

All in all, the most notable change introduced by the latest Samsung Health update is the added support for Dark Mode. Both Samsung and Google have made a bigger push to enable Dark Mode for more applications with the launch of One UI 2.0 and Android 10, and Samsung Health now joins an expansive list of apps that support the mode.

As usual, updates to Samsung’s apps are being distributed gradually, meaning that version 6.9.0.051 might not yet be available for your Galaxy device. You can check your app’s version by launching Samsung Health, tapping the hamburger menu in the upper-left corner, then tapping the cogwheel icon to access the Settings screen. Your app’s version is shown under ‘About Samsung Health.’

If the latest version is not yet available in your region or if you don’t want to wait for the OTA release, you can choose to circumvent the usual procedure and, instead, download the latest Samsung Health APK from our archive to install it manually on your phone.

Galaxy M31 in black, blue, and exclusive red pops up in leaked renders

With just one week left before the Galaxy M31 launches in India, a handful of press renders depicting the device in all three color choices emerged via Twitter. The renders show the Galaxy M31 in black, blue, and the more exclusive red flavor, the latter of which we’ve known about for a couple of months now, albeit without having renders to share.

The smartphone’s overall design has already been unveiled by Amazon along with several key specifications. The Galaxy M31’s 6.4-inch display is of the Infinity-U variety and it has a thicker lower bezel that might work in your favor if you’re having issues with accidental touches on bezel-less devices.

Overall, the Galaxy M31 looks like a mixed bag of old and new design elements. To begin with, rear-mounted fingerprint scanners are no longer that popular, but the large rectangular camera cutout is definitely a new design element in Samsung’s book.

The camera bump highlights the fact that the Galaxy M31 is a 2020 smartphone, and lends credibility to the idea that Samsung is much more serious about the mobile camera game this year. The device sports a 64-megapixel main camera, the same as the Galaxy A71.

Much like the ‘value-for-money champion‘ Galaxy M30s before it, the upcoming Galaxy M31 packs a monstrous 6,000mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging. It will ship with Android 10 and the latest version of One UI out of the box, and it should become available for purchase on February 25, at least in India.

Are you planning on buying the Galaxy M31 in black, blue, or perhaps the more exclusive red flavor next week? Leave a comment below.

Exclusive: Galaxy Z Flip display has a shock absorption layer for protection

The Galaxy Z Flip may be Samsung’s second foldable smartphone, but it’s the world’s first device to feature foldable glass. It’s a completely different material than the one that Samsung used for the Galaxy Fold. Therefore, the clamshell foldable is more durable and that’s certainly a step in the right direction.

A glass panel wasn’t the only thing missing from the Galaxy Fold. We have found out that there’s actually a shock absorption layer between the Ultra Thin Glass and the display’s polarizer.

Galaxy Z Flip comes with serious durability improvements

There has been a lot of speculation recently in the media about whether the “Ultra Thin Glass” is really glass. Much of it has had an accusatory undertone, that perhaps Samsung was misleading customers. We have already explained the reality of this in considerable detail but the gist of it is that most of the coverage has a strong bias.

The simple fact is that Samsung has done something with the Galaxy Z Flip that no other manufacturer has been able to do so far. Its competitors will no doubt be tearing the device apart to study just what it has done to create a more durable foldable display. Samsung will only be improving the tech so one can’t even imagine the kind of foldable smartphones it may launch in the future.

Samsung went with Ultra Thin Glass for the Galaxy Z Flip as it’s a more durable material compared to the polyimide that was used for the Galaxy Fold. The internal documents that we have seen also highlight the addition of a shock absorption layer to further enhance the display’s durability. This layer provides impact resistance and is capable of suppressing defects such as cracks and bubbles. There should be no doubt that the Galaxy Z Flip’s display is much more durable than the Galaxy Fold.

Those who expect Gorilla Glass 6 level durability from a nascent technology are only setting themselves up for disappointment. We may just get there a few years down the road but right now, it’s nearly impossible to find a foldable smartphone that’s as robust as the Galaxy Z Flip.

Galaxy Buds+ pre-bookings open in India, here’s how much they cost

The Galaxy Buds+ are now up for pre-order in India. Samsung has opened pre-bookings for its new wireless earbuds in the country through its official website. Like the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+, the Galaxy Buds+ will start shipping to customers in India from March 6. The price has been set at Rs 11,990 ($167), Rs. 2000 more than the launch price for the Galaxy Buds last year. The earbuds are available in blue, black, and white.

The Galaxy Buds+ were announced alongside the Galaxy S20 series and the Galaxy Z Flip and offer a number of upgrades. The Buds+ offer double the battery life of the original Buds (11 hours on a single charge, 22 hours when combined with the case), improved call quality thanks to three microphones in each bud, and better sound quality thanks to dual drivers (each bud has a woofer and a tweeter). Those who had their fingers crossed for active noise cancellation will not be thrilled since Samsung decided not to offer that feature with its new earbuds.

That being said, the company has made some meaningful improvements to the earbuds. It has particularly addressed some of the pain points of the original Galaxy Buds, so it’s certainly going to be a welcome change. We are currently working on a review of the Galaxy Buds+ and will soon be able to tell you if all those upgrades are worth the asking price. The review is going to be up in the next few days, so do stick around for that.

Samsung wins contract to manufacture Qualcomm’s X60 5G modem

Qualcomm’s latest 5G modem was unveiled earlier today under the X60 moniker, and it didn’t take long for fresh reports to emerge and suggest that the new 5G solution will be manufactured by Samsung in its own facilities using a 5-nanometer process. Compared to the X55’s 7nm process, 5nm provides better energy efficiency and performance in a smaller footprint.

The other major supplier will be TSMC, according to the Reuters report, but none of these companies have made an official statement on the matter yet. For the time being, it’s not clear exactly how much of the X60 production will be covered by Samsung.

The X60 modem isn’t going to power any 5G smartphones scheduled for a 2020 release, but instead, Qualcomm plans to use it for the 2021 lineup. This should give Samsung plenty of time to prepare its facilities for mass production.

Samsung’s non-memory semiconductor business could win big

Spec-wise, the X60 is compatible with 2G and more modern infrastructures including 5G, and it supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave networks. It’s too early to know for sure, but an educated guess would be that Samsung’s Galaxy S21 series – or however the 2021 flagship will be called – is going to use this X60 modem, at least in markets where it won’t employ an in-house Exynos solution.

But perhaps more beneficial for Samsung will be the fact that the X60 modem will likely be used by the majority of 5G flagship smartphones in 2021, even those that don’t carry the Galaxy branding. The more 5G devices Qualcomm’s solution will power, the more Samsung’s logic chip business should strengthen.

Samsung already has big plans for the non-memory semiconductor segment and wants to make hefty investments to better-compete against TSMC and win additional clients. Samsung has been thinking ahead, and less than a year ago the company confirmed that it wants to invest roughly $115 billion in logic chip development by 2030. The recent reports indicate that Samsung’s decision might already be paying off.

Samsung Pay users in Spain can now make payments with Orange Bank

While Samsung is gearing up to introduce its mobile payment solution to more regions this year, the company is also working on constantly improving Samsung Pay in existing markets. Case in point, Samsung Spain and Orange Bank have now joined forces and, as of today, February 18, Orange Bank customers in the country can make online transactions using Samsung Pay.

Spain was one of the first countries in which Samsung Pay was released. The service debuted in South Korea and the USA in 2015, and Spain was the second country after China in which Samsung Pay became available in 2016.

Samsung Pay now supported by 24 financial institutions in Spain

Although the service was compatible with only a handful of banks early on, Samsung Pay customers in Spain now take advantage of compatibility with 24 financial institutions, including Orange Bank as the newest member. You can refer to the screenshot below or this link to see what other banks and entities support Samsung Pay in Spain. As usual, customers are advised to contact their banks to learn which of their cards may or may not be compatible with Samsung’s mobile payment solution.

Roughly 1 billion people around the world are likely to use mobile payments this year, according to Samsung citing a ‘Global Proximity Mobile Payment’ report. An increasing number of smartphone and smartwatch users prefer mobile payment solutions for convenience, and Samsung seemingly has big plans to both improve and expand the service this year.

Samsung was the only major DRAM supplier to make a turnaround in Q4

Samsung’s DRAM business in Q4 2019 saw a decline in revenue of 5% and a 1.6% drop in market share, yet the company managed to maintain its top spot in the segment and remains the only major DRAM supplier in the market to have made a turnaround in Q4 2019, according to The Korea Herald citing market research firm TrendForce.

Samsung was reportedly the only supplier in that position last quarter because the company managed to lower production costs by transitioning to 1Y-nm production. By doing so, Samsung increased its operating margin from 33% to 36%.

Samsung sat at the top of the DRAM foodchain in Q4 2019 with a 43.5% market share, down 1.6% from the previous quarter. In contrast, Samsung’s closest rival, SK Hynix managed to increase its market share by 1.2%, but profitability was negatively impacted by its transition to the 1Y-nm production which led to a low yield rate early on.

How is the future looking for Samsung’s DRAM business?

TrendForce estimates that DRAM chip suppliers including Samsung could improve profitability in the first quarter of 2020 by increasing their prices, but whether or not this will happen is another matter. Samsung’s server DRAM selling prices have already dropped quarter-on-quarter but its sales figures increased by only 2-3%.

TrendForce’s DRAMeXchange research division wrote a paper last month explaining that Samsung’s Hwaseong incident won’t affect DRAM prices in Q1 2020. That’s not to say prices can’t increase for other reasons, and only time will tell if Samsung will adopt this strategy this year.

As for production capacity, TrendForce predicts that Samsung will manufacture roughly the same amount of DRAM chips throughout 2020 as it did last year, so it’s likely that the company will maintain its top spot throughout the year but it might not see huge improvements in sales figures. As to how the company will tackle production, Samsung will reportedly allocate Line 13 to CMOS production instead of DRAM in the earlier part of 2020 but will offset this by mass-producing DRAM chips at its second memory plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea.

Samsung is launching the Galaxy A71 with quad cameras in Brazil

Following its European release late last month, the Galaxy A71 is headed for South America, and it’s now launching in Brazil for the price of 2,799 Real or the rough equivalent of $644. Customers can pick between three color options including Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush Silver, and Prism Crush Blue.

What you’ll get for $644 is a generous 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a pixel count of 2400 by 1080 and an embedded fingerprint scanner, a Snapdragon 730 octa-core chipset paired with 6GB of RAM, a 4,500mAh battery with 25W fast charging, and Android 10 with Samsung’s latest One UI version out of the box.

Get ready for quad cameras with a macro lens

Samsung is truly stepping up its mobile camera game this year and its efforts are showing across the board, from the beastly Galaxy S20 Ultra to more budget models like the Galaxy A01, whose rear-facing setup comprises two cameras.

The Galaxy A71 is one of Samsung’s latest smartphones to boast a dedicated macro camera for close-up photography enthusiasts. The sensor has a resolution of 5 megapixels and an f/2.4 aperture. The rest of the assembly includes a 64-megapixel f/1.8 wide shooter, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera, and a 5MP f/2.2 depth sensor, while selfie enthusiasts rely on a 32MP unit with a similar f/2.2 aperture.

At the time of writing this story, the Galaxy A71 is not yet listed online on Samsung’s website in Brazil, but product pages for Galaxy A71 silicon cases already exist and the smartphone itself should pop-up momentarily. Are you planning on buying it once it goes live?

Galaxy S20 will auto switch to 60 Hz refresh rate in some situations

A display with a high refresh rate is one of the best features of Samsung’s new flagship, the Galaxy S20. The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra have AMOLED displays with 120 Hz refresh rate, the highest possible on smartphone displays right now. However, some folks have been critical of the fact that the 120 Hz refresh rate cannot be used at the maximum screen resolution.

Samsung isn’t saying why it made the choice to allow the high refresh rate only at up to Full HD+ screen resolution. We’re assuming it has to do with the fact that pushing high refresh rates at high resolutions can be quite taxing on a device’s GPU and affect battery life. And we have now learned that even at Full HD+, the Galaxy S20 won’t always stick to 120 Hz refresh rate and will automatically switch to 60 Hz in certain situations.

High battery temps, some apps will bring refresh rate down to 60 Hz

These situations are mostly related to the battery, as expected: The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra will switch to 60 Hz refresh rate whenever the battery temperature goes above 42°C and when the battery level drops down to 5% or lower. The switch to 60 Hz will also happen when certain apps are launched, such as the camera or Google Maps. Such apps eat up a lot of battery power in general, so it’s not surprising that Samsung is making sure that the smooth and quick 120 Hz refresh rate won’t be active when those apps are being used.

Will Samsung ever offer customers the option to use both 120 Hz refresh rate and maximum screen resolution (WQHD+), perhaps by adding it via a software update? It’s certainly something plenty of people have been demanding ever since the Galaxy S20 series went official, but whether or not the Korean giant will listen and add such an option is not something we can say right now. However, we have reached out to Samsung for a comment and will let you know as soon as we hear back.

Samsung not planning to sell Galaxy Home Mini separately right now

The Galaxy Home and the Galaxy Home Mini are two of the most elusive products with the Galaxy branding. It’s been a year and a half since Samsung first showed off the Galaxy Home, its Bixby-powered smart speaker, but before it could go on sale, the company started focusing on the Galaxy Home Mini instead, with rumors claiming it would be officially announced at the same time as the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip.

However, that didn’t happen: Samsung decided to only offer it as a pre-order bonus for Galaxy S20 customers in South Korea. And it seems the company plans to keep it that way for some time. That’s what a Samsung representative told a curious customer in Korea, though no more details were offered other than the fact that the Galaxy Home Mini will not be available for purchase as a separate product.

How long will the Galaxy Home Mini (and the Galaxy Home) remain unreleased? That’s a question no one can answer. Samsung had told us back in October that it would be “sharing more details on the product availability soon,” but with Unpacked having come and gone, we’re still in the dark as far as a release date is concerned. And, at this point, we’re beginning to lose interest, and we’re assuming the same is true for many of those who had been looking forward to picking up the Galaxy Home or Galaxy Home Mini.
