Samsung to offer attractive discounts on Galaxy S8 and other devices in India

India’s largest online retailers, Flipkart and Amazon, have announced year’s biggest shopping events to capitalize on the festival season. While Flipkart will run ‘The Big Billion Days Sale’ from October 10 to October 14, its chief rival Amazon India will have ‘The Great Indian Shopping Festival’ during the same period. Samsung has teamed up with both the shopping portals to offer attractive discounts on a wide range of products, including its flagship smartphones from last year.

Flipkart will sell the Galaxy S8 64 GB variant for ₹29,990 (~$400) during the 5-day sale, while Amazon will offer the Galaxy Note 8 for ₹43,990 (~$590) during the same period. Both these prices are the lowest ever for these models in India and can be brought down even further with bank offers. Buyers can also avail No Cost EMI and Exchange offers to sweeten the deal even more.

Discounts on Galaxy On series phones as well

Samsung will also offer substantial discounts on many of its other products. Flipkart will have the Galaxy On6 64 GB for ₹11,990, Galaxy Tab A T335Y for ₹11,999, Gear Fit 2 Pro for ₹8,999, and more. Amazon India, on the other hand, will sell the Galaxy A8+ for ₹23,990 and Galaxy S9 for ₹42,990. It is also offering discounts on a wide range of online-exclusive Galaxy On series phones as well.

This isn’t the first time Samsung is trying to aggressively sell its last year’s flagship models at discounted prices. The company did something similar last year as well with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. Though the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 are more than a year old, both of them are still very capable devices and will easily best many of the newer midrange models priced similarly. Buying them at these discounted prices, particularly the Galaxy S8, is definitely not a bad idea for those on a tight budget.

Three Galaxy S10 models have now been certified in China

It has been reported multiple times that Samsung will launch three Galaxy S10 models next year. We confirmed their model numbers three weeks ago – SM-G970F, SM-G975F and SM-G973F. These three models have now received their certification from the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology or CMIIT.

This is the first certification for Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone. CMIIT received these devices for inspection on September 25.

Three Galaxy S10 models receive certification in China

CMIIT has certified the three Galaxy S10 models bearing model numbers – SM-G9700, SM-G9730 and SM-G9750. The “0” at the end denotes that these models are intended for the Chinese market. The certification doesn’t confirm much about the devices other than just reiterating their model numbers.

Reports suggest that the SM-G970 and SM-G973 models will both feature a 5.8-inch display with single and dual rear cameras respectively. The SM-G975 will most likely be the device with five cameras – three at the back and two up front. The rumored 6.44-inch display will also be present on this model. It’s unclear if there will be design differences between these handsets.

Samsung is also reportedly preparing a separate 5G variant of the largest Galaxy S10 model. It may only be offered in select markets like the United States and South Korea without a separate model number. That’s because there aren’t a lot of markets where commercial 5G networks will be operational by early next year.

We can expect to see additional certifications for these three Galaxy S10 models to come up in the next few weeks. Samsung won’t be confirming much about the Galaxy S10 in this period. It will properly unveil its upcoming flagship smartphone early next year.

Samsung has a neat solution for those who dislike software navigation keys

Here’s something interesting we discovered on the new Galaxy A7. Samsung has implemented a neat feature for those who don’t like the software navigation keys taking up screen space on their smartphones. On the Galaxy A7, you can permanently hide the navigation bar and use gestures for accessing the home, back, and recent apps actions. Confused? Allow us to explain.

Access software navigation keys without seeing them on-screen

On Samsung devices with Infinity displays, there’s an option to add a little dot in the navigation bar and then double tap this dot to hide or show the navigation bar. Hiding the bar allows for more usable screen estate, and one can simply swipe up from the bottom of the device to access the navigation bar when needed. On the Galaxy A7, though, you have a new option: Swiping up from the bottom of the screen while the navigation bar is hidden will instantly trigger the back, home, or recents key actions.

You will permanently see three small blobs at the bottom of the screen and you can swipe from each of these blobs for the respective actions. So, by default, a swipe up from the left blob will bring up the recent apps screen, while a swipe up from the rightmost blob will take you back. The middle blob, naturally, will take you to the home screen. These blobs can also be disabled if you wish (by toggling the ‘Gesture hints’ option). The only problem is that if you enable the key gestures and hide the navigation bar, the navigation bar can only be brought back by taking a trip into the display settings.

Again, if you don’t like the navigation bar taking up some part of the screen, these gestures are quite useful. Hopefully, Samsung will bring the same feature to existing devices via software updates. What do you think about the gestures functionality Samsung has implemented on the Galaxy A7?
