Daily Deal: $35 off on the 16GB WiFi Galaxy Tab A 9.7

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A 9.7 is now available for just $264.90, which is a $35 saving on the regular asking price. The deal comes through Amazon and doesn’t include the S Pen stylus. The variant comes with 16GB of onboard storage, which can be further expanded with the help of a microSD card.

The Galaxy Tab A 9.7 comes with a 9.7-inch 1024 x 768 display, 1.5GB of RAM, a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, a 5-megapixel camera on the back, Android 5.0 Lollipop (upgradable to Marshmallow) and a 6,000 mAh battery. This might be a limited period deal, so we suggest you hurry on to the Amazon listing before stocks run out.

Samsung invests $10 million in SVACE security solution for Tizen apps

Samsung has reportedly invested $10 million in SVACE (Security Vulnerabilities and Critical Errors Detector) technology to improve security of Tizen apps. This technology detects potential vulnerabilities and errors that might exist in the source code of Tizen apps.

SVACE was developed by ISPRAS (Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences), which is based out of Russia. Samsung has entered into an agreement with the Institute, but ISPRAS will retain full rights to the intellectual property rights. However, Samsung can use the technology freely as its funder. According to Marat Guriev, general director for technology and information services at Samsung Electronics Russia, the company began using it as its only tool to analyze the source code of apps since 2015.

Samsung has included SVACE as a part of the Tizen Static Analyzer in the Tizen SDK and Studio. It can be used to perform a static security analysis of C/C++ source code in Tizen apps. However, it can also be used to find problems such as dereference of Null Pointers, Memory Leaks, Division by Zero, and Double Free in C, C++, C#, and Java code.

Upcoming Galaxy A handsets could come with curved displays

As per a new report coming out of South Korea, Samsung could be looking to expand its curved display flagship lineup to the Galaxy A series as well. We have recently heard about the Galaxy A7 (2017), which will probably feature a standard flat screen display. This venture could be official sometime next year as Samsung pushes to get the Galaxy A lineup into the mainstream fold.

The Galaxy A lineup is pretty diverse and includes budget offerings like the Galaxy A3, and slightly advanced models like the Galaxy A5, the A7 and the A9. There’s no confirmation from Samsung on this matter, so we suggest you take this report with a heavy dosage of salt. The upcoming Galaxy S8 is also expected to include a dual curved-edge display, so there’s plenty to look forward to for Samsung fans next year.

Although Samsung is currently leading the pack in several countries like the U.S. and China, its market share is slowly shrinking due to the rise of several manufacturers in Asia. The likes of Huawei, Oppo etc are breathing down Samsung’s necks in China, which means that the only way to remain competitive is to come up with low-priced mid-tier handsets with unique and attractive hardware specifications underneath.

Samsung might stick with a single rear camera for the Galaxy S8

Apple’s move to put dual cameras on the back of the iPhone 7 Plus was probably the final confirmation manufacturers needed that dual cameras are indeed a thing in the smartphone world, and Samsung is expected to follow suit next year with the Galaxy S8. Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong had said earlier that the Galaxy S8 would feature an “improved camera,” but there has been no concrete indication of Samsung actually shifting to a dual camera setup.

Our own Weibo source had suggested that the S8 could feature two cameras at the back but is now saying that Samsung might skip doing so and that it is a possibility a dual camera setup will be seen on one of the Galaxy S8 variants. Rumors have suggested Samsung will put edge displays on both variants of the S8, and we could see the company following in Apple’s footsteps and putting two rear cameras only on the larger variant. As with all rumors, nothing is certain – we have even heard that Samsung could remove the home button and launch the S8 in 5.7-inch and 6.2-inch variants, so it’s all speculation at this point.

The dual camera trend has seen significant uptake this year, even though the secondary rear camera is mostly used for taking ‘bokeh’ photos (or for optical zoom, as seen on the iPhone 7 Plus). Samsung’s decision to stick with a single camera setup would say a lot about the company’s confidence in its smartphone cameras, which wouldn’t be surprising considering the Galaxy S7′s camera continues to rank at the top even today. Again, all these rumors should be taken with the proverbial pinch of salt until we see something along the lines of actual photographs confirming things.

Samsung introduces paid themes in the Netherlands

Samsung introduced themes with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge last year, and then the feature was introduced to other high-end and mid-range smartphones from the company. However, paid third-party themes were limited to a few markets, but that is changing slowly.

Samsung has introduced paid themes in the Netherlands earlier today (paid themes have seemingly been available for a few days, but Samsung is only now making an official announcement.) Now you have more themes to choose from, including options that we often find to be better than the free ones.

New themes hit the Theme Store every week; follow our Themes Thursday series to see the best ones.

Galaxy A7 (2017) passes through the FCC

An unannounced smartphone with Galaxy branding has been spotted at the United States of America’s official certification authority, the FCC. Unfortunately, the documentation included in the filing doesn’t reveal anything about the handset, other than it carries the model number SM-A720F, which leads us to believe that we’re looking at the long-rumored Galaxy A7 (2017).

Recent benchmark listings point towards the handset packing a 5.7-inch Full HD display, a 1.8GHz Exynos 7880 System-on-Chip (SoC), 3GB of LP-DDR4 RAM, 32GB of expandable internal storage, a 16-megapixel front- and rear-facing camera and a 3,300mAh battery. It’s also expected to sport a fingerprint scanner, LTE connectivity and a USB Type-C port, though that’s all unconfirmed.

If you’ve been following SamMobile over the course of the past few of months, you’re probably aware that the handset has already been imported into India for testing and has been granted its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certification credentials — alongside the Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017) — which means that it’s now passed all of the tests required before it can launch on the open market.

Galaxy Note 5 running Android 7.0 Nougat spotted on GFXBench

If a recent benchmark test is anything to go by, it would appear that Samsung is in the final stages of testing the long-awaited Nougat update for the Galaxy Note 5. Usually, when a handset is benchmarked running a new version of Android, it indicates that a rollout is right around the corner.

We should note, however, that it’s relatively easy to modify a device’s model number to falsify benchmark results. However, seeing as a Galaxy S6 was spotted on GFXBench a little over a week ago running a build of the Nougat firmware, we’re pretty confident that this is a genuine sighting.

Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the firm is expected to start distributing the update. However, we do know that it will make its way to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge first (an early build has already reached some units participating in Samsung’s beta program), followed by the S6 lineup and the Galaxy Note 5.

Exclusive: Android 7.0 Nougat confirmed for the Samsung Galaxy A (2016) lineup

Samsung’s software support could see a milestone in the coming months, as we have received confirmation that the company will be updating the Galaxy A (2016) series smartphones to Android 7.0 Nougat. The Galaxy A (2016) lineup could mark the first time Samsung would be treating devices that aren’t flagships to a second major Android upgrade.

We don’t know when Nougat will hit the Galaxy A lineup; with quite a few flagship devices to be taken care of, Samsung is likely going to take its time with rolling out the update to its mid-range and budget devices. The 2016 Galaxy A lineup is huge itself – it consists of the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5, Galaxy A7, Galaxy A8, Galaxy A9 and Galaxy A9 Pro, so we could be waiting until the second quarter of 2017 before these phones are running Nougat in every region.

If you have been following the coverage here on SamMobile, you are probably aware that Samsung is currently working on Android 7. 0 for the Galaxy S6 devices, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the Galaxy Note 5, and the Galaxy Tab S2. Also in the works are 2017 iterations of the Galaxy A smartphones, which could be introduced sometime later this month. The 2017 editions are expected to ship running Android 6.0 out of the box, but we can hope to see them get Android 7.0 along with their 2016 brethren in the coming months.

Don’t forget to check out Samsung’s version of Android 7.0 Nougat in our What’s New With Nougat series. There’s no guarantee Samsung will include the same new features and user interface on devices other than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, but we are certainly hopeful given how the company has focused on software consistency since the Galaxy S6 launched early last year.
