T-Mobile’s Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra get 5G support in Hungary

The Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra recently picked up an important update on T-Mobile’s network in Hungary. After the recent software update, the two phones have started supporting 5G networks. Moreover, the update also brought along the May 2020 security patch to these Galaxy S20 series phones.

The latest software update for T-Mobile’s Galaxy S20+ carries firmware version G986BXXU2ATDD. The Galaxy S20 Ultra for the carrier now has firmware version G988BXXU2ATDD. The non-5G variant of the Galaxy S20 seems to have received a new software update (G980FXXU2ATDD) as well, carrying the May 2020 security patch, similar to the Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Magyar Telekom (T-Mobile’s subsidiary) rolled out its 5G network in Hungary on May 9 in partnership with Ericsson. This is the reason why the Galaxy S20+ 5G and the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G received support for 5G networks on the same day through the latest software updates.

The May 2020 security patch fixes nine critical vulnerabilities in Android and nineteen Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE), including the one that allowed remote code execution through Qmage (.qmg) files. If you are in Hungary and use the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, or the Galaxy S20 Ultra, you must’ve received the update notification over the weekend.

You can check for the update manually by going to Settings » Software update menu and tapping Download and install on your phone. You can also download the firmware files from our firmware database and flash them manually.

Samsung was Western Europe’s biggest smartphone brand in Q1 2020

Samsung has been the biggest smartphone brand in the world for almost a decade now, but the company is passing through turbulent times. Its position is being fiercely challenged by Chinese OEMs like Huawei and Xiaomi. In China and India, the South Korean firm’s sales have dropped quarter after quarter. Samsung is still going strong in a few markets like the US and Western Europe, though.

According to a report from market research firm Canalys, Samsung was the biggest smartphone brand in Western Europe during the first quarter of 2020. The company had a market share of 37 percent in the region, finishing above Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, and HMD Global. However, that was still a 21 percent drop compared to Q1 2019 numbers. It was revealed that the Galaxy A51 was the third best-selling smartphone in the world.

Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi, and HMD Global managed to capture 24 percent, 18 percent, 10 percent, and 2 percent shares of the market, respectively. While sales of most other OEMs dropped during Q1 2020, Xiaomi showcased a staggering 79 percent rise in its market share compared to Q1 2019. Moreover, in a few markets like Spain, Xiaomi managed to beat Samsung to become the biggest brand. This could be a sign that Samsung needs to do better.

Sales of the Galaxy S20 series has been disappointing so far, to say the least. Since the record-breaking sales (80 million) of the Galaxy S4 in 2013, sales of the Galaxy S series have been dropping with each passing year. There’s light at the end of the tunnel, though. Despite its $1,380 price tag, the Galaxy Z Flip has been a bigger hit than Samsung anticipated, and the company plans to launch more foldable phones in the future.

Galaxy A21s leaks confirm front design, additional specifications

We had first reported about the Galaxy A21s four months ago, revealing its colors, macro camera, model number, and storage variants. Over the past few weeks, the phone has been making appearances in various certifications and listings. Now, the phone’s front design and additional specifications have been confirmed through Android Enterprise and Google Play Console listings.

The Galaxy A21s (SM-A217F) features a 6.5-inch screen with HD+ resolution (1600×720 pixels) and a corner punch-hole for the selfie camera. Considering that the phone is expected to use an IPS LCD panel, it will have a rear-facing capacitive fingerprint reader. The upcoming mid-range smartphone from Samsung appears to be running Android 10, so it will most probably feature One UI 2.0.

It is equipped with the yet-unannounced Exynos 850 SoC, which has eight ARM Cortex-A55 CPU cores clocked at 2GHz and ARM Mali-G76 GPU clocked at 1GHz. It has 3GB RAM and 32GB/64GB internal storage. Similar to all other Galaxy M series smartphones, we expect the Galaxy A21s to feature a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion.

The Galaxy A21s is rumored to feature a triple or quad-camera setup, consisting of a 48MP primary sensor, an ultrawide camera, and a 2MP macro camera. At the front, the upcoming phone will feature a 13MP selfie camera. In a recently leaked marketing video, it was revealed that the phone would have AR Doodle and Live Video modes in its stock camera app.

Its connectivity features include a dual-SIM card slot, GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C port, and a headphone jack. A 5,000mAh battery acts as its power source. The Galaxy A21s will be launched in four colors: black, blue, red, and white. The phone has already passed through Bluetooth, FCC, NBTC, and Wi-Fi certification processes, so we expect it to launch soon.
