Galaxy S9 Android Pie beta program now available in India

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ owners in India can now register for the One UI and Android Pie beta program. This follows a week after the Galaxy Note 9 beta program was launched in India and other beta-eligible markets and two weeks after the Galaxy S9 beta’s second phase kicked off.

Galaxy S9 Pie beta for India a little behind schedule

The Galaxy S9 beta now available in India is the same one that was pushed out as the third version of the Android Pie in the US. That means Indian users are getting a newer version from day one that should have fewer bugs. The beta comes with software version G960FXXU2ZRL5 and G965FXXU2ZRL5 for the S9 and S9+ respectively and includes the December 2018 security patch. The update is a nearly 1800 MB download with all the bells and whistles of Android Pie and Samsung One UI.

To register for the beta program, open the Samsung Members app on your phone, then tap on the notice that says Registrations Open for One UI Beta Program. Tap the image on the next screen, then hit the Registration button at the bottom and agree to the terms and conditions to finish registration. Once registered, you can download the Pie beta by going into the Software update menu of the phone’s settings and tapping Download updates manually.

If the phone says the latest update is already installed, just try a couple of times until the beta update starts downloading. Don’t forget to backup all your data while the download is in progress, as moving back to Oreo will require a hard reset. Also make sure to have at least 20-30 percent battery charge. Once you have Pie, do follow this one important step that can help Samsung increase the stability of the beta.

One way you can help Samsung improve the Android Pie beta

Samsung’s software team is no doubt working long hours right now to get Android Pie and One UI ready for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9. The Android Pie beta program has been live for the Galaxy S9 for nearly a month and Samsung has already made it quite stable and bug-free compared to betas for previous Android versions. And the company says you can further help it collect feedback by turning on a setting in the Samsung Members app.

Could help Samsung avoid Oreo’s random reboot issues

This setting is called Lock up/Restarting reports, and it does exactly what the name suggests. Basically, if your phone freezes or reboots when it’s sitting locked and unused, the necessary error logs will be collected. Then, when you open the Samsung Members app the next time, you will be asked to send these logs to Samsung. The company believes this is an important option as far as stabilization of the beta is concerned. It will hopefully allow Samsung to ensure the reboot issues that plagued the Android Oreo update for many Galaxy devices don’t affect Android Pie.

Running the Android Pie beta on your Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, or Galaxy Note 9? You can enable this option in the Samsung Members app’s settings. Just open the app, and you will be greeted by the Galaxy Beta program welcome screen. Tap the Settings button at the top, then tap Send error logs. Here, enable the Lock up/Restarting reports option. Folks in the US should be able to find the same option in the settings for the Samsung+ app.

New Galaxy S9 Android Pie beta update rolling out in the US

Samsung’s Android Pie beta program for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ is making some progress today. A new beta update is currently rolling out in the US. This update is a bit smaller than the previous beta update that was released a week ago, but it’s still bringing a number of bug fixes and improvements. It also includes the December 2018 security patch. The December patch was also released for Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ units running Android Oreo earlier today.

A laundry list of bugs have been fixed

Quite a few bugs have been squashed, such as the lift-to-wake function not working at times, an update error in Galaxy Apps or Google Play (which also affects the Note 9), crashes of the dialer and Phone app, autofill not working with Samsung Pass, alarms not going off, and a missing ‘Close all’ option in the recent apps screen. We can expect some performance improvements as well. Hopefully, the third beta update will not introduce any new bugs or issues. The last one did, but Samsung was released a hotfix update the next day, which should be the case this time around as well.

The third Android Pie beta should soon be making its way to other markets where the beta program is available. Whether the Galaxy Note 9 will also get another beta release remains to be seen. If you running the Android 9 beta on your Galaxy S9 or S9+, you can grab this update by tapping Download and install in the Software update menu of the Settings app.

Have you received the new beta update on your Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9 in the US or another country?

Samsung announces collaboration with a fake Supreme

The Galaxy A8s launch event in China had a little surprise in store. No, it’s not the A8s missing a headphone jack, neither is its LCD display. Samsung, in fact, surprised the fashion-conscious locals by announcing a collaboration with the clothing brand Supreme. Things were still fine until Samsung China’s Feng En invited executives from the popular American brand.

Following Feng En’s call, two gentlemen claiming to be the CEOs of Supreme made their way to the stage. But they were not, at least not of the real Supreme. Instead, they were from a counterfeit Supreme, and Samsung was all aware of it.

Samsung partners up with fake Supreme

We all know Supreme as a New York-based fashion brand that sells a variety of clothing products. But because of an oversight by the company, it’s now having to deal with a counterfeit that carries the same name and logo.

Supreme never registered the brand in some markets, like Italy and Spain, giving birth to another Supreme brand. Based in the town of Barletta in Italy, Supreme Italia has registered the domestic trademark for itself and is selling “legal fake” goods in those markets. And now, Samsung is starting to do business directly with this brand in China.

“The brand we are collaborating with is Supreme Italia, not Supreme US. Supreme US doesn’t have the authorization to sell and market in China. Whereas the Italian brand got the Asia-Pacific (except Japan) product retail and marketing authorization,” said Leo Lau, Samsung China’s digital marketing manager, responding to criticism on his Weibo.

Supreme is extremely popular in this part of the world so it’s not surprising to see Samsung inking a partnership with it, even if it’s not the real one.

Galaxy A8s is Samsung’s first Galaxy A smartphone with an LCD display

Well, it looks like the Galaxy A8s, Samsung’s first phone with an Infinity-O display, isn’t as good of an overall package as Samsung fans would like. That hole in the display for the camera is already a big point of contention, and then we learned that the phone doesn’t have a 3.5mm headphone jack. And after one of our readers pointed it out, we realized Samsung hasn’t said the Galaxy A8s display is a Super AMOLED panel.

All screen and no AMOLED makes the A8s a dull phone

Yes, that’s right. Samsung’s foray into the market of smartphones with display cutouts has begun with a phone that gets neither an AMOLED screen nor a headphone jack. And while the latter has been a special feature of Galaxy phones only because the competition had stopped offering a headphone jack, an AMOLED display has long been a major draw of Samsung’s Android phones. A recent rumor had revealed that Samsung would be using LCD displays for some of its A series phones in 2019, but it looks like the company has already kicked things off with the Galaxy A8s.

And while the Galaxy A8s could be limited to the Chinese market, it doesn’t excuse the fact that Samsung isn’t at least giving consumers an AMOLED display to make up for that glaringly big hole in the screen. Of course, it’s possible the company’s notched AMOLED panels aren’t yet ready for commercial smartphones or it’s waiting until the Galaxy S10 to bring them to market. As a result, one can hope that LCD displays on Galaxy A smartphones will be the exception rather than the norm, although nothing can be said for certain right now.

Good thing there’s at least something interesting about the Galaxy A8s, a list of which you can find here.

Samsung starts testing Android Pie update for Galaxy A series phones!

Samsung has now started testing Android Pie for one of its Galaxy A series smartphones. A Galaxy A7 (2018) running Android 9 has been spotted on Geekbench, and with a little bit of digging, we have learned that the test firmware carries software version A750FNXXU1BRL1. Samsung had started testing Pie for its flagship devices earlier than usual, so it seems the company is moving quickly for cheaper devices as well.

Galaxy A7 (2018) Pie update is in development

This isn’t the first signal that the Korean giant is taking updates more seriously. Samsung has been releasing regular security updates for many devices in recent months, and while not every market has seen the same frequency of updates, the overall pace has quickened considerably. And that may extend to the Android Pie update as well. In fact, the Android Pie beta on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 is already quite stable despite being in its infancy, so it certainly seems possible that the company has cracked the code to faster software development (or somehow managed to make Project Treble work in their favor).

Of course, this is just wishful thinking until Samsung officially gives us reason for celebrating. Testing for other existing Galaxy A smartphones, like the Galaxy A6, Galaxy A8 (2018), or Galaxy A9 (2018), hasn’t begun yet, so it may just be the Galaxy A7 (2018) that is getting an early start. With the Galaxy S9 and Note 9 Android Pie update slated for January, owners of other Galaxy smartphones still have to wait a couple of months before they get to enjoy the beautiful new Samsung One UI.

Samsung Galaxy A8s’ camera hole is just one of its notable features

Samsung has finally unveiled the Galaxy A8s, its first smartphone that has some kind of an obstruction in the display. Samsung’s alternative to a notch involves making a hole in the display to accommodate the front-facing camera. It’s not something only Samsung is doing, though. Huawei has a phone with a similar design in the works, so it seems the Korean giant only chose to wait out the notch fad instead of exclusively developing its camera-in-a-hole solution as an industry first.

Sadly, the Galaxy A8s doesn’t get a3.5 mm headphone jack, so this is the start of a new era for Samsung that is going to turn a lot of heads. But the Galaxy A8s does get some interesting features, and we take a look at some of the notable ones here.

Snapdragon 710 with 6GB/8GB of RAM

The Galaxy A8s is Samsung’s first phone to be powered by the Snapdragon 710 chipset. Compared to the Snapdragon 660, the Snapdragon 710 brings a number of improvements. It’s based on a 10nm process instead of a 14nm process, which means it is considerably more efficient and should heat up less in resource-intensive tasks like high-end games. It gets newer ARM Cortex cores as well – two Cortex-A75 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores.

The Snapdragon 710 also comes with the Adreno 616 GPU, which is 35 percent faster than the Adreno 512 GPU found on the 660. Of course, these are theoretical figures, but at the end of the day, the Galaxy A8s is Samsung’s most powerful mid-range smartphone at the moment. There’s even a variant with 8GB of RAM like the Galaxy A9 (2018), but the base model with 6GB of RAM should be more than capable at multitasking.

Ultra-wide camera on the back

The Galaxy A8s gets three rear cameras like the A7 (2018) and not four sensors, which does make it somewhat less interesting than it could have been. But you still get an ultra-wide lens that allows you to fit more of a scene in a picture. The ultra-wide sensor doesn’t get autofocus and maxes out at 10-megapixel resolution, but with none of the competition offering ultra-wide cameras, the A8s gets a brownie point. Again, having a zoom lens would have further sweetened the deal, but we’re guessing Samsung had to make a compromise to keep the price tag under check. Sadly, the pricing is yet to be revealed.

Gradient colors with an extra aesthetic touch

Now, this is one feature that is going to be common across Samsung’s smartphone lineups going forward, but it deserves a mention as one of the highlights of the Galaxy A8s. The grey variant is especially attractive. It makes for a classy look that is missing from the brighter color options Samsung has offered in the past. In fact, even the blue and green variants have a subdued look that exudes class.

The extra aesthetic touch here is the small ring around the middle rear camera. It looks quite nice, and the ring’s color is different for each of the phone’s color variants. It doesn’t seem to serve any purpose, though, so the few fans of Samsung’s Smart Glow ring may be disappointed.

128GB of storage on the base model

Samsung has already released two devices that have 128GB of storage on the base model (the Galaxy Note 9 and the new Galaxy A9), and the A8s is joining the party. And while some might think a microSD slot makes it unnecessary to have more than 64GB of internal storage, more internal storage is always a boon, especially for those who install many high-end games or store movies, music and other media locally. Let’s not forget that microSD cards still aren’t very affordable if you want the high-capacity options.

The Galaxy A8s does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack

The highly anticipated Galaxy A8s has been unveiled today by Samsung. It was anticipated because it’s the company’s first smartphone with an Infinity-O display. While that was what most people focused on when the device was launched, Samsung seems to have snuck in a notable change.

The Galaxy A8s does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s the first device in Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup to not feature the jack. The impact of this decision may not be limited if Samsung decides to release the Galaxy A8s in other markets.

Samsung ditches the 3.5mm headphone jack for the Galaxy A8s

Customers in other parts of the world have been isolated from Samsung’s move to ditch the headphone jack so far. It had only ever done this for the flagship flip phone that it releases in China. The SM-W2018 didn’t have it and neither does the new SM-W2019. That’s because the flip phone has always been limited to this part of the world.

The Galaxy A8s may not be, considering the fact that it’s a part of the much widely available Galaxy A series. It’s also the first smartphone from Samsung with the Infinity-O display. The company may very well want to introduce this technology in markets outside China as well before the Chinese do.

This handset is part of Samsung’s efforts to regain its lost customer base in China. It’s fighting an uphill battle in trying to make customers ditch local brands and their compelling products for its devices. Whether removing the headphone jack will deliver the intended result remains to be seen. One can argue that it may not.

There have already been whispers that Samsung is testing a prototype of the Galaxy S10 without a headphone jack. It would certainly elicit a much stronger response from its fan base if it decides to make this decision for its next flagship smartphone. It’s evident, though, that Samsung is no longer averse to ditching the jack even on devices that gain a lot more exposure overall.

Samsung installs the world’s largest Onyx Cinema LED screen in China

Samsung has been pitching the Onyx Cinema LED screens to replace the old projection screens in theatres around the world. First launched in South Korea in July 2017, these new generation theatre screens have already been installed in select theatres in the US, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Thailand, China, India, and others.

Continuing its push for the Onyx Cinema LEDs, Samsung unveiled the largest-ever Onyx screen at Capital Cinema in Beijing on December 7. At 14 meters wide (46.2 feet), the screen at Capital Cinema is 1.4 times wider and has twice the amount of surface area compared to the original model (which was 10 meters (33.6 feet) wide). Samsung says it made the bigger version to address the consumer demand for larger screens and business demand for more profits.

The new variant has all the bells and whistles you would expect from an Onyx screen. It boasts 4K resolution, HDR capabilities, highest brightness, more contrast, and is also 3D-ready. Paired with Onyx Sound solution from Harman’s JBL, the Onyx Cinema LED screen is a complete solution that offers an immersive viewing experience.

“Our new Onyx display reflects a momentous step for the industry, as we usher in the next generation of cinema around the globe. We’re excited to partner with Capital Cinema to help showcase the new industry standard for picture quality on the big screen,” said Seog-gi Kim, Executive Vice President, Visual Display Business, Samsung Electronics.

More Samsung Galaxy exclusive Fortnite items could be on the way

More exclusive Fortnite items may be on the way for the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy Tab S4 owners. A recent data mine hints at a “Galaxy” named weapon skin and llama spray. While Epic Games is yet to confirm either of those items, addition of new game files gives us a good reason to believe this may be happening.

Meanwhile, the Fortnite Season 7 itself is bringing in a host of new skins and gear to the game. So it would be interesting to see how more exclusive items fit in.

Exclusive Fortnite Galaxy items on the way

Fortnite news site FBR News recently tweeted that a weapon skin called “Galaxy” is on the way. “50/50 chances of happening: Yes there’s a weapon skin called ‘Galaxy’ but there’s no texture or images of how the weapon skin of ‘Galaxy’ looks. Is real is on the files, but there’s no way to confirm if it’s really happening or not happening. We will need to wait and see,” the tweet read.

The Fortnite llama spray, meanwhile, was snaffled out by ShiinaBR on Twitter. “New GalaxyLlama Spray! You get the Spray if you have the Galaxy Skin. I don’t know when it will be released,” the account which specializes in Fortnite leaks tweeted. The spray highlights the Fortnite llama wearing a Galaxy skin and matching the look of what is available in the cosmetics set; skin, pickaxe, back bling, and glider.

The Galaxy skin was an exclusive item for owners of the Galaxy Note 9 and Tab S4. Those players also received additional items from the Galaxy set in October. The set of Fortnite items exclusive to Samsung Galaxy owners include:

  • Galaxy outfit
  • Galactic Disc back bling
  • Stellar Axe pickaxe
  • Discovery glider

Samsung has been showing great interest in mobile gaming lately. The company is reportedly investing £31 million (~$40 million) for some Galaxy-exclusive games. Samsung may also have a gaming smartphone in the pipeline.

Samsung brings more artworks to the Frame TV

Focused on home-décor, Samsung’s Frame TV is designed to look like a work of art when not in use as a TV. First unveiled at CES 2017, the company launched a successor to the original Frame TV in July this year with design and feature improvements, including an expanded Art Store to access numerous iconic works from galleries and museums around the world.

Samsung’s Art Store, which the company claims to be “the largest, specially curated art content platform in the world”, already has more than 1,000 works of art and photography, which Frame TV customers can access either by purchasing them individually or through a monthly subscription. The Art Store is now set to receive another 62 works of art, thanks to Samsung’s new partnerships with the Uffizi Galleries from Italy, The Van Gogh Museum from the Netherlands, and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Artwork from Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and more now available

The new collaborations bring the works of Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Eugène Delacroix, Piero della Francesca, Lorenzo Monaco, Rosso Fiorentino and others from the Uffizi Galleries, works of Anthony Copley Fielding, Frank Edward Clarke, Johannes Keulemans, and others from the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and works of Vincent van Gogh such as “The Yellow House”, “The Bedroom”, “Sunflowers,” and others from The Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands.

Commenting on the partnership, Seline Han, Vice President, Samsung’s Visual Display Business said, “The Frame has gained global popularity, and we are thrilled to continue to provide consumers with new artworks to enjoy from the comfort of their homes. We strive to redefine how a product can provide value to consumers’ unique lifestyles, and we believe that The Frame does just that. Our latest partnerships and concession will allow users to access even more rare masterpieces to enhance their home décor.”

Galaxy Tab S4 update brings December 2018 security patch

Samsung is pushing out an update with the December 2018 security patch to yet another flagship device. The Galaxy Tab S4 is receiving a new update in France with the new security patch. Both the Wi-Fi and LTE models of the tablet are being updated, with software version T830XXU2ARK4 and T835XXU2ARK4 coming along for the ride.

The December 2018 security patch is an important one, as it fixes a serious vulnerability that made it possible to access gallery images outside Secure Folder without the need for authentication. 39 other vulnerabilities are also fixed, including one that “allows access to clipboard information via copy & paste” on the lockscreen. As expected, some of the vulnerabilities weren’t disclosed. The December patch also brings fixes for six critical vulnerabilities discovered in the Android operating system.

The Galaxy Tab S4 update only offers the new security patch and can be downloaded over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on the tablet. It may not be available for everyone instantly, so be sure to check a little later if it doesn’t start downloading right away. Alternatively, you can download the firmware for the new update from our firmware section and use a Windows PC to flash it on your Tab S4 manually.

Samsung launches the Galaxy A8s with Infinity-O camera hole display

Samsung had teased the Galaxy A8s a couple of months ago in China. The teaser suggested that this device would have an almost entirely bezel-less display. Samsung later revealed the Infinity-O display which punches out a camera hole in the actual display area for the front camera.

While the Galaxy S10 is expected to feature an Infinity-O display, it won’t be the first device to ship with it. Samsung today announced the Galaxy A8s. It’s the company’s first device with a display that has a hole for the front camera.

Galaxy A8s goes official with Infinity-O display

The Galaxy A8s is not a flagship device by any stretch of the imagination but the specs are respectable. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor with 6GB of RAM and 8GB RAM options. It ships with 128GB of storage and has the same 24-megapixel + 5-megapixel + 10-megapixel triple camera system as the Galaxy A7.

The display is without a doubt the most unique aspect of this smartphone. The 6.4-inch Full HD+ 19.5:9 aspect ratio Infinity-O display has a cutout in the panel itself for the front camera. The 24-megapixel selfie shooter is placed in this hole in the top left corner of the display.

It may have looked quite small in the renders that surfaced so far but it’s definitely noticeable. More so against light backgrounds which contrast against the black color of the camera lens. It should blend in nicely with the dark mode in One UI but this device actually ships with Android 8.1 Oreo, not Android 9 Pie.

The Galaxy A8s has the same DNA as some of Samsung’s recent premium mid-range devices. It has a metal and glass build with rounded corners for a comfortable grip. The triple camera is placed vertically much like it is on the Galaxy A7. There’s also a fingerprint sensor at the back and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Samsung has only announced the Galaxy A8s in China today where it will go on sale soon. It will be offered in blue, green, and silver colors. The price is yet to be announced. Samsung has not confirmed if the Galaxy A8s will be making its way to other markets.

Samsung trademarks possible new phone naming scheme: Rize10, 20 and 30

Last week, Samsung filed trademark applications in several countries for a possible new Galaxy Rize phone lineup. So, what are the Rize10, Rize20 and Rize30?

Possible Galaxy Rize series incoming

In, amongst other jurisdictions, the UK, Samsung filed paperwork for trademarks Rize10 (PDF), Rize20 (PDF) and Rize30 (PDF). The documents leave little doubt as to what the trademarks belong to: smartphones. That, of course, does not tell us any real details. But we can not ignore the similarities to the naming schemes Samsung is applying to two other series in 2019.

Samsung is known to be working on its new A series, with device names like Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50. Also, the new M series devices will carry a comparable naming scheme, with phones like Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20.

Judging by the numbers, it seems the Rize10, Rize20 and Rize30 are likely to be modestly spec’d devices. Perhaps later we will see a Rize50 or Rize70 too, but for now, the three filings are all we have to go on.

Of course, we have to keep an open mind to the possibility that these names are indeed smartphone-related but not device names. The lack of Galaxy in the branding could mean we are seeing the names of accessoires, for example. Let’s hope some more details will surface in the course of the next weeks. We’ll make sure to keep our own eyes and ears open as well.

Galaxy S9+ December 2018 security patch update rolling out

Samsung is rolling out a new software update for the Galaxy S9+ today, bringing the latest security patch to the flagship device. This update is for those who are on Oreo of course, and it is currently rolling out in the Nordic countries. The software version is getting bumped to G965FXXS2BRK3 and it’s unclear if the update brings more than just security fixes.

However, even if it’s just the December security patch, this is quite an important update. The December 2018 patch fixes a whopping 40 vulnerabilities that affect Samsung’s software, including vulnerabilities that could allow unauthenticated access to Secure Folder items and the Gallery app. It’s not often that so many vulnerabilities are discovered in either core Android or Samsung’s version of the OS, so we can expect Samsung to be rolling out the December patch to most of its recent devices as the days go by.

The Galaxy S9+ update is currently rolling out over Samsung Smart Switch, but it should soon be available over the air. The update should also come to the regular Galaxy S9 and expand to more countries in the next few days. You can update your device using the relevant firmware available in our database as an alternative to Smart Switch.
