Exynos-powered Galaxy S7 appears to be faster than its Snapdragon 820 counterpart

As I’m sure you’re well aware, Samsung launched two variants of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge — one with a Snapdragon 820 CPU and the other with the South Korean manufacturer’s homegrown Exynos 8890 chipset. The former is only available in Asia while the latter can be found on shelves in Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

Early benchmarks revealed that the Snapdragon 820 model was, in fact, more powerful than the Exynos 8890-powered unit. Initially, it was believed that Qualcomm’s processor was quicker than Samsung’s in-house alternative pulling an incredibly impressive score of 5,423 in a Geekbench test, whilst the Exynos chip received a rating of 5,946.

Now that the handsets have reached us, the public, it looks like the tables have turned. If you take the two side-by-side comparisons uploaded to YouTube into account, it appears that the Exynos 8890 variant of the Galaxy S7 is actually significantly more powerful than the Snapdragon 820-driven Galaxy S7. Not only does this model boot and open applications faster but it also renders video at a significantly faster rate. The possibility exists that this substantial difference in performance might be specific to these units unless we see more videos pop up on YouTube with similar results. This could also be due to a Samsung fault with optimization since the Snapdragon 820 has returned higher benchmark scores in some tests.

Check out the comparisons below:

How to activate and customize the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge’s Always On display mode

One of the most talked about features Samsung’s flagship smartphones of 2016, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, are their Always On displays. For those unaware of this new functionality, it’s a low-energy software tweak that empowers a small part of the screen to stay on at all times in order to provide users with easy access to notifications, time, date and battery statistics without physically having to unlock their device.

Strangely, the Always On feature doesn’t come enabled straight out of the box, but thankfully, it’s super easy to activate. All you have to do is head into Settings, followed by Display, then tap Always On Display and slide the toggle from Off to On. The next time you lock your device, you will notice that the display will fade to a black background, but a small portion will remain illuminated exhibiting either a clock, calendar or image.

You do, of course, have the option to choose what’s displayed on the screen of your device. The choices are fairly restricted, though. You only have the resources to alter the clock style and background image. If you’d like to have a play around with the options, hit the button entitled Content to Show while in the Always On Display menu.

How to save photos to the microSD card on the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

If you didn’t buy any of Samsung’s flagships from last year because they didn’t have expandable storage, we don’t blame you. Having the option to add more storage to a phone is an extremely important feature, and thankfully the microSD slot has returned with the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. Saving photos is what a microSD slot is used most for, and we’re here to help you and nudge you in the right direction if you’re wondering how you can set the microSD card as the default storage for saving photos and videos.

It’s extremely simple, actually (as it should be). Once you’ve put in a microSD card on your Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, opening the camera app will get you a pop-up that asks you whether you want to save photos and videos to the SD card. Selecting okay here will set the SD card as the default storage. If you don’t get this notification, simply hit the settings button on the top left of the camera app, scroll down to find the Storage location option, and set it to SD card.

As the phone will notify you, burst shots will not be saved to the microSD card. The internal storage is a faster chip than any microSD card you will find, and is, therefore, preferable for saving burst shots as they are taken in extremely quick succession (burst shots are taken by holding down the shutter button in quick succession).

Grab the TouchWiz 6.0 theme if you haven’t received Android 6.0 on your Galaxy yet

The Android 6.0 updates have been going out to Samsung flagships from last year in various markets since the end of the February, but there are still a lot of regions where the update is yet to show up. If you’re among the many that are still using Android Lollipop on a Galaxy flagship that isn’t a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge and want the Android 6.0 version of the TouchWiz interface, there’s a nice little theme available on the Theme Store.

The theme is named TouchWiz 6.0, which you can search for in the Theme Store. We covered the theme in our Themes Thursday feature two weeks ago; it’s a nice little theme that mimics the user interface seen on Marshmallow, including the white and blue notification shade. It’s not exactly much to tide you over while you wait for the Android 6.0 update to arrive on your device, but hey, it is something, right?

Samsung devices running Marshmallow let you expand all quick toggles with a single swipe

On Samsung devices, you get a constantly visible row of quick toggles in the notifications shade, with the option to swipe to the left to access additional toggles. To see more than just the ten toggles that can be present in the quick toggles bar, you would need to press the Edit button to both see more options and to change what options you usually see. On Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Samsung has tweaked this a bit and you can now make all the toggles show up simply by swiping down on the screen after pulling the notification shade.

This is a small yet useful change, as you no longer need to reach the top of the screen to hit that Edit button or swipe left for more toggle options. It’s not something you might have noticed if you’re using a Samsung device running Marshmallow, so we thought we would point it out (not everyone here at SamMobile had noticed this either). Oh, and Marshmallow also brings back the shortcut that lets you swipe down on the status bar with two fingers to directly reveal all the quick toggles, which went missing in Android 5.0.

The rest of the functionality hasn’t changed, so quick toggles have simply become more convenient with the latest iteration of Android on Samsung devices. Here’s a visual example of what we’re talking about (if the image doesn’t animate for you, click on it to open it in a new window):

Samsung is now the third most valuable global brand

Samsung is a renown brand name, and one that is hard to not notice in the world (even in the US), but brands are also about money. Valuable brands are expected to make money (otherwise, what’s the point?), and the Korean giant is right up there with the very best worldwide brands. How valuable of a brand is Samsung? So valuable that it’s now the third most valuable brand in the world.

The results from Brand Finance show that Samsung is third only to Apple (who took the no. 1 spot) as well as Android owner and search engine giant Google (who took the no. 2 position). Samsung did place above brands such as Amazon (4th), Microsoft (5th), Verizon (6th), AT&T (7th), WalMart (8th), Chinese carrier China Mobile (9th), and Wells Fargo (10th). Samsung brought in an additional $1.5 billion in brand value in 2015 to bring its total brand value to $83.2 billion.

Samsung’s mobile division has been a big reason behind this feat with its top smartphone sales spot in India in 2015, but the company has had its share of trouble with smartphone sales in China after being the top-selling manufacturer in the country in 2013. The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge may just boost Samsung’s sales in the right direction, since Samsung’s going out of its way to woo Chinese customers with the removal of its company branding from the front of its latest smartphones in China (and in Korea, its native country) and give the edge, a signature design in high demand, to Chinese manufacturers. Perhaps it’s the case that consumers will see the edge as Samsung innovation and return the Korean giant to greatness there. Samsung Electronics’ mobile chief is positive about the turnaround. Removing its corporate branding from the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge in Japan didn’t help Samsung’s sales last year, but a new year could bring a better outcome.

Samsung was ranked by Interbrand as the seventh best global brand in 2015, with Samsung Electronics coming in first in Saudi Arabia in 2015 and first in Russia for its fifth year in a row last year. Samsung was the second most valuable global brand according to Brand Finance in 2015 with a brand value of $81.7 billion in sales.

Samsung SM-J210 gets imported to India for testing, could be the Galaxy J2 (2016)

The 2016 editions of the Galaxy J1 and Galaxy J3 have already gone official (though there never was a previous iteration of the J3), and the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 (2016) are in the pipeline as well. It looks like a Galaxy J2 (2016) is also in the works, as an SM-J210 was recently imported to India for testing. The original Galaxy J2 was far from an impressive budget smartphone, and it looks like Samsung is looking to offer an improved version this year.

Whether the SM-J210 will be called the Galaxy J2 (2016) remains to be seen, though it certainly looks probable given how the Korean giant has been naming its new handsets this year and how there is a 2016 edition of almost the entire Galaxy J lineup. The total price of all the components imported is around the same as the retail price of the Galaxy J2, and for now there is no telling what hardware the phone will carry. An AMOLED display should be on-board, but we will need to wait for more leaks and rumors to find out about the device’s other specs.
