Samsung Experience (Oreo) vs One UI (Android Pie) in screenshots

Samsung’s main goals with One UI are to make sure users can see important information at a glance and easily access various actionable elements with one hand, and One UI also brings a number of visual changes as a result. It’s one of the biggest upgrades to Samsung’s proprietary Android user interface we have seen, with a number of new features and functionality added as well.

We’ve already covered many of those new features, and with the stable Galaxy S9 Android Pie update now available in a number of countries, Samsung pretty much has the final version of One UI ready for public use. And we thought this might be a good time to put some screenshots together to show our readers how One UI compares visually to the Samsung Experience UX on Android Oreo.

There are plenty of visual changes on One UI, from something as small as the placement of the clock in the status bar to major aspects such as the notification shade and app icons. Not everyone is going to like all these changes, which is fine, but some of you may change your mind seeing both Oreo and Android Pie screenshots side by side.

So go ahead and check out the screenshots below; the Android Pie/One UI version is on the right in each screenshot. Wondering if your Galaxy smartphone will be updated to Pie? Check out our dedicated Android 9 Pie page!

Samsung shakes up its monitor lineup with three stylish new models

Samsung today announced the launch of three new stylish monitors with each serving a distinctive purpose. The Space Monitor is modern and minimalist while the CRG9 is a massive curved gaming monitor. The 4K UHD curved UR69C offers incredible detail to content creators.

We have seen large gaming monitors from Samsung before so it’s just more of the same. However, the Space Monitor really does take the cake here. It has a minimal and flexible design that will help users focus on what’s on the screen instead of what’s around it.

Samsung shakes up its monitor lineup for 2019

The monitor has an integrated space-saving solution in the form of a fully-integrated arm that can clamp to the desk and free up space. It can simply be pushed back flat against the wall when not in use. It offers a discreet cable management system through the arm to maintain the minimal look and feel. Samsung Space Monitor will be available in 27-inch and 32-inch models with QHD and 4K UHD resolution respectively.

The CRG9 is a 49-inch high-resolution super ultra-wide gaming monitor with 32:9 aspect ratio with a 120GHz refresh rate and 4ms response time. There’s also support for AMD Radeon FreeSync 2 HDR for reducing screen tearing, stutter, and input latency. It boasts 5120×1440 “dual QHD resolution,” HDR10 and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits. Additional features include Picture-by-Picture which allows for two video sources to be viewed on the same screen.

Samsung describes the UR59C as the world’s first 32-inch curved 4K UHD monitor for content creators. It has a 2,500:1 contrast ratio and full 3840×2160 4K UHD resolution. It has a slim design as well with a depth of 6.7mm and a fabric-textured rear casing.

The company hasn’t confirmed the pricing for these new monitors. It will be showcasing them at its booth next week during the Consumer Electronics Show 2019 in Las Vegas.

Galaxy S10 has seemingly been caught in the wild

There has been no shortage of render and case leaks concerning the Galaxy S10. We have today what might be the first true image of the Galaxy S10 out in the wild. The device seen in this image does line up with the expectations that people have for the Galaxy S10. It has slim bezels and a camera cutout in the top right corner.

The source mentions that this is the device codenamed “Beyond 1,” or the Galaxy S10. We already know that there will be three models of the next flagship. A Galaxy S10 Lite, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+.

Galaxy S10 will be one of three models of the next flagship

It’s also known from earlier reports that the Galaxy S10 is going to feature a 6.1-inch display. The screen protectors that were recently shown in a video suggest that the display curves won’t be as pronounced as they’ve been on earlier Galaxy S flagships.

The Galaxy S10 will be Samsung’s first flagship device to feature the Infinity-O display. Samsung has already released one device with this display though, it’s the Galaxy A8s. However, that phone is only limited to China. The Galaxy S10 will obviously be making its way across the globe.

Samsung’s Infinity-O display does away with the notch by placing the front camera inside a hole in the active display area. It’s believed that this camera cutout may also be adorned with the same animations that we have already seen with the Galaxy A8s. It does allow for increased screen real estate but the chin does retain some heft to it.

It’s also claimed that this model has the ability to wirelessly charge another device. Samsung will be calling this feature PowerShare.

Do bear in mind that this image comes from an unofficial source and it could be of an early prototype. Nothing is set in stone until there’s official imagery to go on. That won’t arrive until the handset is actually announced. Samsung is likely going to unveil the Galaxy S10 at the Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona next month.

Samsung India registers a spike in revenue and a drop in profit

India is a price sensitive market, and that has helped the Chinese companies with inexpensive offerings to grow rapidly in the region. This has resulted in brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and others making a dent in Samsung India’s market share and profits in the last few years. To compete with them effectively, Samsung has revamped its budget smartphone lineup with feature-packed models at lower prices.

While the strategy seems to have worked for Samsung to maintain its revenue lead in the Indian market, it appears it resulted in a decline in profits for the Korean company. According to an Economic Times report, based on Samsung’s filings at the Registrar of Companies (RoC) in India, the company’s total revenue in the country increased by around 11% from ₹ 55,511.9 crores ($1 billion = ~ ₹ 7,000 crores) in FY17 to ₹ 61,065.6 crores in FY18. Though the revenue has gone up, the company has much to worry about as the net profit declined by 10.7% to ₹ 3,712.7 crores during the same period.

The most profitable consumer electronics and smartphone brand in India

On its own, Samsung India’s mobile business revenue also witnessed a healthy growth of 37% at ₹ 37,349 crores, but here again, the gross profit dropped from ₹ 3,474.1 crores in FY17 to ₹ 3,415.9 crores in the last year. The trend of a drop in profit even when revenue is up shows that while Samsung’s strategy to compete with the Chinese OEMs on price might have a positive bearing on its revenue and unit sales, it will hurt the company in terms of net profit. The numbers also show that the company operated on lower margins to counter the threat from Chinese OEMs.

The report also says that Samsung’s television business in the country saw its sales decline by around 3% to ₹ 4,512 crores, but the gross profit increased by an impressive 88% to around ₹ 222 crores in the last fiscal year. The contradiction shows that while Samsung might be doing poorly in unit sales of TVs, the company is doing well in the premium segment to improve its profitability.

Overall, Samsung is still the most profitable consumer electronics and smartphone brand in the country. It is also the largest television, frost-free, and side-by-side refrigerator brand in the country according to the regulatory filings. Though multiple reports have ranked Xiaomi as the largest smartphone vendor in the country, Samsung continues to be the revenue leader in the market.

One UI (Android 9) feature focus: Free up memory and storage automatically

Galaxy smartphones have all the tools one needs to keep their device running optimally, including the ability to clear the device memory by stopping background apps and freeing up storage by deleting unnecessary files. Howevers, users can’t be expected to actively keep an eye on these aspects of their device, so Samsung has introduced an option called Auto optimization with Android Pie and One UI.

Auto optimization can be considered an extension of the auto restart feature we already have on Galaxy smartphones. When enabled, it will clear background apps from memory and free up storage at a scheduled time each day. However, as noted in its description, the auto optimization feature lets recently used apps stay in memory and only clears those you haven’t used for some time but are still taking up device RAM. For freeing up storage, it will only delete unnecessary files such as cached and advertisement files and won’t affect your personal data.

How do I enable auto optimization?

The auto optimization option can be found in the Device care section of the Settings app on Android Pie. In the main Device care screen, tap the three-dot button at the top right and tap Auto optimization (see the animation below for a quick visual guide). Here, you can enable the feature and select a time for when the optimization should take place. The optimization won’t occur if you’re using the phone at the scheduled time, so be sure to select a time when you don’t usually use your phone on most days.

Don’t forget to check out more of what’s new with Android Pie and One UI in our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series.
