What’s New With Nougat Part 10: Calendar app gets new, improved interface

Samsung released a new beta for Android 7.0 Nougat on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and our latest part in our What’s New With Nougat puts the focus on Samsung’s calendar app. The company’s calendar app has received a major UI overhaul in Nougat – the calendar’s interface now matches the rest of Samsung’s new UX and looks much better than the version that runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and older versions of the OS.

We’re not sure what new features the calendar gets, although we will be sure to update this post once we find something. In the meanwhile, check out the screenshots below to see the new calendar app in action. Don’t forget to check out our previous coverage of Nougat on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in our What’s New With Nougat series!

My Money Transfer app released for the Samsung Z1 and Z3

Samsung’s third Tizen smartphone, the Z2, launched with many new features. One of these was a payment service for Indian folks called My Money Transfer, which lets users send money to others without the need for an internet connection, and Samsung is bringing the service to its other Tizen phones. My Money Transfer is now available for download on the Samsung Z1 and Z3 from the Tizen Store.

My Money Transfer is similar to other third-party banking apps that let users make bank transactions such as transferring money, checking account balance and monthly statements, with support for around 15 major Indian banks at the moment. It works over the USSD protocol found on all GSM handsets and doesn’t require the user to be connected to the internet, which is perhaps its biggest and primary advantage, especially in a country like India where not everyone has easy access to the internet at all times.

Grab My Money Transfer from the Tizen Store on your Z1 or Z3, and don’t forget to check out our review of the Samsung Z2.

Galaxy S7 edge has the lowest SAR value among the top 10 popular smartphones

The Galaxy Note 7 may have met with an untimely demise, but the Galaxy S7 edge is still holding its own and is one of the best smartphones out there. According to a new report, the Galaxy S7 edge has the lowest electromagnetic radiation amongst the ten most popular smartphones around the world.

The SAR (specific absorption rate) value of a cellular device indicates the amount of radiation absorbed into the human body. The lower the SAR value, the safer it is for humans. According to PhonAndroid, the Galaxy S7 edge’s SAR value was 0.264W/kg, the lowest among the ten most popular smartphones. It was followed by the Asus Zenfone 3 with 0.278W/kg, the Galaxy A5 (2016) with 0.290W/kg, and the Lenovo Moto Z with 0.304W/kg.

The Honor 8 and P9 smartphones by Huawei had the highest SAR value in the test with 1.5W/kg and 1.43W/kg, respectively. The Apple iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 7 had seventh and eighth with SAR values of 1.24W/kg and 1.38W/kg, respectively.

Samsung grabs a record market share in the mobile DRAM segment

Samsung is betting big on its semiconductor products, and the company has managed to grab a record high market share in the mobile DRAM market during Q3, 2016. According to the recent data by DRAM market tracker DRAMeXchange, Samsung’s share of the global mobile DRAM market rose to 64.5%, up from 61.5% during last quarter.

The South Korean semiconductor giant’s mobile DRAM sales increased by 22.4% from last quarter to US$2.96 billion. SK Hynix, Samsung’s main rival saw its market share decline from 25.1% in Q2, 2016 to 22.8% in Q3, 2016. Micron Technology’s market share dropped to 10.6%. Samsung and SK Hynix had a combined market share of 87.3% during last quarter.

Last month, Samsung unveiled its 10nm-based 8GB DRAM chipset for smartphones and tablets, which it claims can massively improve experiences on devices with large, high-resolution screens. The company is also manufacturing Qualcomm’s upcoming high-end SoC, the Snapdragon 835, based on its new 10nm FinFET fabrication technology.

Galaxy S8′s AI assistant can process payments, might come in male and female variants

In 2017, Samsung will launch the Galaxy S8 with its own AI assistant that can process payments. Also, new trademark applications point to male and female versions of this voice controlled assistant, named Bixby and Kestra.

A few weeks ago, after the news of Samsung’s acquisition of AI maker Viv Labs, it was discovered that the Galaxy S8 might come with its own artificial intelligence software, possibly called Bixby. Now, we have learned that Samsung is working on the technology to process payments through voice commands. Not coincidentally, this technology is being developed under the name Bixby Pay, confirming the name as well as its payment feature.

Furthermore, the guys over at GalaxyClub have uncovered new, AI-related trademark applications. In both South Korea and the European Union, Samsung has filed the paperwork for the trademark Kestra, as well as several variations of the name Bixby: Bix-bee, Bix:)bee, Bix:)by and Bix-by. All trademarks come with the same descriptions that leave nothing to the imagination, such as ‘Computer software for enabling hands-free use of a mobile phone through voice recognition’ and ‘Computer software used to process voice commands’. Though unconfirmed, Bixby and Kestra could well turn out to be the male and female variants of Samsung’s AI.

Fun detail: the names Bixby and Kestra are directly or indirectly associated with (drumroll, if you will) Star Trek, which makes for a neat connection to, you know, the Galaxy. Or, in this case: the Galaxy S8 and its larger sibling, possibly called Galaxy S8 Plus.

Samsung rolls out another Android 7.0 Nougat beta update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

Samsung is rolling out a new version of the Android 7.0 Nougat beta for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the UK today, making it the third update to hit the devices in the last three weeks. Samsung seems to be taking customer feedback to heart as it has implemented a few changes to how things worked in the previous Nougat firmware.

For example, the new beta brings the ability for us to choose the layout for the Quick Panel toggles, and you can also put the brightness slider at the top of the toggles and back into the main notification shade. Samsung has removed the Edge feeds feature, although we’re guessing this will come back later on. The new beta also has a few unresolved issues, such as the screen taking time to light up after one wakes up the phone, though Samsung says these issues only affect a small number of users. Naturally, regular stability improvements and bug fixes are also part of the update.

The firmware version of the update is G935FXXU1ZPKK; if you have the Nougat beta installed on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge, you should see the update hit your device sometime later today. If it doesn’t, simply search for Software update in the settings menu to download it manually (it’s sized at around 300 MB). Don’t forget to let us know about any changes you notice after installing the update!
