Man unharmed thanks to “bullet-proof” Samsung Galaxy Mega

Forget the Galaxy S5 Active; the next variant Samsung may want to consider is a bullet-proof one following this news of a man in Taiwan surviving a gunshot to the chest thanks to his plastic Galaxy Mega 6.3. It seems that this is the result of a miscommunication between two parties regarding a lost wallet; the man who was shot seemed to find it and lay claim to it, while the owner wasn’t too happy and may have overreacted. As we can see, the phone was located in the breast pocket and absorbed the full force of the bullet.

The Galaxy Mega 6.3 phablet debuted approximately one year ago running Android 4.2.2 OS on a 1.7GHz dual-core processor with 1.5GB RAM, LTE support, an 8MP rear camera, a 1.9MP front camera, with microSD card support, and a 3200mAh battery.

Samsung is working on a phone with ‘new materials’

Samsung reported their Q2 2014 financials today and in the earnings call held shortly after the results, Samsung confirmed two new devices that will be revealed in the coming months. Kim Hyun-joon, senior vice president at Samsung Mobile confirmed a big screen phone will be unveiled along with a new device made from “new materials”.

It’s safe to say the large-screened device will be from the Galaxy Note range but the phone with the new materials could very well be the Galaxy Alpha.

We’ve been bringing exclusive info on the Galaxy Alpha and according to our source, the phone will have a metallic design. Few other things we know for certain is the 4.8-inch screen with 720p resolution support, 32GB of internal storage, fingerprint scanner and the launch slated for next month.

Milk Music Premium arrives, offers unlimited skips – and then some

Shortly following its launch in March of this year, Samsung’s music streaming app began attracting reports that a paid subscription would soon be integrated into the project. With its most recent update, this option is now available. For the $3.99 per month you’ll be paying, you get: unlimited song skips, the ability to play without a network connection, an automatically-pausing Sleep Timer feature, and a toggle for whether or not you hear the Station DJs.

The free version of the app will still be available, but will cap song skips to six per station and will also continue featuring occasional advertisements. As far as comparing this offer to some other popular music streaming services we can see that Samsung is striving to be the low cost alternative. Spotify, Google Play Music, and Beats Music all charge $9.99 per month and provide many of the same features, albeit with a slightly larger music library. Pandora One costs $4.99 per month but Milk Music Premium remains the least costly option for satisfying your streaming needs.

In order to upgrade, open the Milk Music app and access the menu tab. From there, tap on Settings (noted with the gear icon) and immediately under your Samsung Account details you should see the option to “Learn More” about upgrading to Premium for extra features. At the moment it does not appear that there is a free, trial period of the Premium version but we would love to hear what you all think of the new option.

Galaxy S5 mini gets a teardown, at par with Galaxy S5′s repairability score

Teardowns are always interesting and the fine folks at iFixit have got the new Samsung device under the knife. The site imported Galaxy S5 mini and reveals every component that powers the smaller sibling of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5 phone. As for the components, the Galaxy S5 mini boasts a Samsung K3QF5F50MM 1.5 GB DRAM, 1.4 GHz quad-core Exynos 3 Quad, Wolfson audio chip amongst other things.

The site also notes the display is “held in with a significant amount of adhesive and requires very careful and persistent prying” but it’s fairly easy to replace other components once you get past the display.

In short, the Galaxy S5 mini is same as the original Galaxy S5 when it comes to repairability.

Samsung’s smartphone market share takes a hit in Q2 2014

Samsung has already warned analysts about an impending decline in profits in the second quarter this year, and now market research firm IDC has revealed that Samsung’s smartphone shipments took a considerable hit during the same period. According to IDC’s data, Samsung’s Q2 market share saw a year-on-year decrease from 32.3 in Q2 last year to 25.2 percent – Samsung still leads other OEMs in shipment volume, but the reduced market share is a telling sign that the company’s phone sales are starting to suffer, mainly in the low and mid-range segment due to Chinese manufacturers offering better value at rock bottom prices.

Samsung is no doubt expecting to bounce back in the coming months with devices like the Galaxy Note 4 and the new Galaxy Alpha lineup, but it remains to be seen just how much change those will bring. As recent trends have shown, growth in the smartphone market is to be had mostly in the budget and mid-range segment, and unless Samsung can come up with more feature-packed devices at attractive prices, the next few quarters might see the company’s market share continue to decline.

You can now buy devices directly from Samsung.com in most European countries

It isn’t difficult to get access to Samsung’s smartphones and tablets, considering they are stocked by almost every retailer and carrier across the world. However, those wanting to buy it directly from Samsung’s official website in most European markets have been unable to do so till now, but that is changing today. Samsung has given its website a visual overhaul, and at the same time added the option to buy a device directly from the site in most European nations. Basically, instead of listing out all retailers selling a particular device in a region, Samsung is now taking orders directly, though its prices will probably be a tad higher than third-party retailers.

Check out Samsung.com and let us know if you’re getting the option to buy a particular phone or tablet.

Apple drops cross-appeal in first California case against Samsung

The patent spat between Apple and Samsung might have earned the top spot in the history of lawsuits as far as the drama is concerned, but it looks like the two giants are finally losing the will to keep going at each others’ throats. Last month, the two companies decided to drop their appeals against an ITC ruling that would have banned a few existing Samsung devices and given Apple the upper hand in yet another hardware patent, and today the iPhone manufacturer has decided to drop yet another appeal against Samsung, in its first case against the Korean manufacturer in California.

Apple and Samsung are still expected to go to court over the second California case ruling, a hearing for which took place a few weeks ago, with Apple looking at getting a permanent injunction against some of Samsung’s infringing devices. However, it looks like the days of heavy melodrama in the two companies’ lawsuits might soon be coming to an end, and hopefully both will realize how all of this has been nothing but a waste of time and resources.

No Samsung, delaying Tizen because of apps is not a good idea

Ever since Tizen was announced as being under development by Samsung (along with Intel and a slew of other partners), we have been waiting for that moment when the Korean manufacturer would launch the first Tizen-powered handset in the market and begin offering an alternative to its Android-based smartphones and tablets. However, numerous delays have resulted in the launch of the first Tizen phone getting postponed many times in the last couple of years, and Samsung has now revealed that the launch of the Samsung Z, the first officially announced Tizen handset, has been delayed in one of its main target markets, Russia, as the company hopes to build a stronger app ecosystem before offering the device to consumers.

Now, that might seem like the most sensible move to make – apps are the most important aspect of a smartphone these days, and the lack of a good app ecosystem has meant that newer operating systems like BlackBerry 10 and Sailfish are failing to pull consumers away from the more established Android and iOS. However, I’m not so sure it’s the right move.

See, the problem any new mobile OS faces is its lack of a solid app ecosystem, especially the lack of bigger names like Instagram, or Temple Run. However, unless you actually launch devices running your new OS in the market and people actually buy them, developers will have no incentive to focus their efforts on said new OS.

Samsung has courted developers to make apps for Tizen by offering them many incentives (cash prizes and the like), and is seemingly wanting to continue doing that before making a Tizen phone available in the market. However, at the end of the day, no matter how many incentives you may offer to developers, they will always go back to spending resources on established players. Samsung might be a huge force in the smartphone market, but even with all its financial might, it cannot keep developers interested in making apps for Tizen when no one is able to buy a device that actually runs the OS.

Basically, launching Tizen, or any new OS, is a double-edged sword – asking consumers to buy an OS in its early stages without a good number of solid apps is almost an evil thing to do, but delaying the launch of the OS and focusing on improving the ecosystem without any available devices is even worse. Samsung needs to launch a Tizen phone and make it available for purchase as soon as possible, or all the resources spent trying to get those developers writing apps for the OS would have been for naught, and I’m not sure that’s something even a huge company like Samsung can afford.

Samsung developer console confirms 720p screen resolution on Galaxy Alpha

We exclusively published quite a few details of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Alpha, recently, along with live photos of the device. Part of the information we revealed back then was that the Galaxy Alpha would sport a 720p display similar to the Galaxy S III, and we’ve now received further confirmation of the screen resolution of the device hiding in Samsung’s own developer console. The developer console, as can be seen in the picture below, confirms the 720p display, something that is also supported by the phone’s user agent profile on Samsung’s website. Furthermore, the developer console confirms that the phone will be launched as the Galaxy Alpha, instead of Galaxy S5 Alpha as some leaks have said.

As we said earlier, the Galaxy Alpha won’t be as high-end as standard flagships, and the 720p resolution on the 4.8-inch screen reaffirms that fact. Other known features of the Galaxy Alpha include 32GB of non-expandable storage, a fingerprint scanner, nano SIM slot, and a metallic construction that sports aluminium on the sides while keeping Samsung’s beloved dimpled faux leather material on the back. The Galaxy Alpha is expected to be unveiled sometime in August, a few weeks before the Galaxy Note 4 will be announced.

Samsung’s 5.9-inch Galaxy Mega 2 makes its way to the FCC

We’ve known that second-generation Galaxy Mega devices have been in the works for quite some time, and the smaller version of the upcoming Mega lineup has leaked quite a few times but has continued to remain somewhat elusive and still hasn’t been made official by Samsung. However, that could soon change, as the 5.9-inch variant of the Galaxy Mega 2 has been certified by the FCC as the SM-G750A, which is (most likely) the AT&T variant of the device.

According to the FCC, the SM-G750A measures 164.4 x 85 mm – that’s a tad larger than the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and considerably smaller than the Galaxy Mega 6.3, indicating that the device could indeed have a 5.9-inch display as previous leaks have implied. The FCC listing also confirms that the SM-G750A sports LTE, NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity – no other details are to be found, though previous rumors suggest the device could feature a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 chipset, a 720p display, 2 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage, and Android 4.4 KitKat.

If you haven’t made the conclusion yet, the Galaxy Mega 2 lineup will be rather similar to the original in its mid-range underpinnings, though it should still be a great option for those looking for a smartphone with a gigantic display without fully entering tablet territory. It’s still unknown what screen size the larger Galaxy Mega 2 variant will sport, but we should be getting all the details in due time.

Galaxy S5 Exynos model now getting recent performance enhancing update

Samsung started rolling out an update in Europe earlier this week to improve the performance on the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy S5, and now the same update is going out to the Exynos-powered variant. The update has gone live in countries like India, and like the Europe update, solely features performance enhancements while being around 200 MB in size and carrying build number XXU1AGN3. As always, you can grab it over the air once it becomes available in your region, or try to force it to show up immediately from the Settings » About phone » Software updates menu.

New ad highlights Samsung Experience Shops

In this age of online shopping, fewer and fewer people actually leave their house in order to buy things. Unsurprisingly, there is a large contingent of U.S. shoppers that are unaware that Samsung actually has a physical store presence, called Experience Shops. These shops – more than 1,400 of them – come as a result of a partnership with Best Buy dating back to April of last year. With this action, Samsung addressed a serious need of presenting its customers with a location to go for servicing, accessories, and upgrading; all within their local Best Buy store.

This 30-second ad follows a curious, young woman named Maggie whom only wants to get better acquainted with all of the fantastic Samsung products available today. Her quandaries finally lead her to a Best Buy Samsung Experience Shop where a friendly associate helps her with all of her questions and rings her up. Quick, convenient, hassle-free; the point of Samsung’s value proposition is well-made. Hopefully you or the “Maggie” in your life will find a trip to the Experience Shop just as pleasant and informative.

Making appearances in the ad are the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy Tab S 10.5, and the Gear Live. Also noteworthy is the inclusion of Samsung’s partnership with The Hunger Games, where there will be a Hunger Games Movie Pack App released on the 28th. Additionally, the Samsung exclusive Mockingjay trailer will be available in select Best Buy stores this weekend.

Samsung finally updating the Galaxy S4 LTE-A (GT-I9506) to Android 4.4.2 KitKat

Owners of the Galaxy S4 LTE (GT-I9506), the day you have all been waiting for has finally arrived. Samsung has started pushing out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to the international LTE-A-enabled and Snapdragon 800-powered variant of its 2013 flagship. The update is currently going out in the Nordic region (Sweden, Finland, etc.) according to some of our readers, and is available over the air. We expect it will have the same features that we’ve seen on every KitKat update – improved performance, redesigned status bar with white icons, enhanced lockscreen with a camera shortcut and full-screen album art, wireless printing support, newer versions of Samsung apps, and better battery life.

Samsung has ignored the international Galaxy S4 LTE-A for a long time, but it is good to see KitKat is finally arriving on the handset. Of course, you will still need to contend with the phased nature of the update’s rollout, but it shouldn’t be long before it comes knocking on every user’s device.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

A two-minute surfing narrative the way only Samsung can

Samsung’s latest commercial is an exciting departure from the usual examination of features and technical details. Rather than switching between scenarios that showcase a variety of devices, this ad – entitled “Every Day is Day One” – instead follows the lives of people on either end of the surfing skill spectrum. Perhaps an otherwise unnoticed community, surfers of all ages and backgrounds demonstrate the sense of freedom, triumph, and comradery that are innate parts of the sport.

And it is precisely these kinds of values that make up the pillars of Samsung’s design and marketing philosophies. Whenever the products do appear within the story, they do so in an especially natural way – lending the viewer to subtly appreciate how functional a Galaxy S5 can be. But again, the focus remains that Samsung is proud of their partnership with the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals). When you get out of the way and simply tell a story, you offer a refreshing change of pace as far as tech commercials go.

New Galaxy S5 ad asks iPhone users to stop waiting for big displays

After years of being adamant that the 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone was perfect, Apple made the move to a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5, which then became the best size for a smartphone in the company’s eyes. This year, no longer in a position to ignore the market trend of consumers of wanting bigger screens on their smartphones, Apple is rumored to be moving to a 4.7-inch display on the iPhone 6. Well, Samsung thinks iPhone users wanting a larger display need to stop waiting and go grab the next best thing, aka the Galaxy S5, and it has posted a new ad on its YouTube channel to poke some fun at its biggest competitor.

It’s quite the short ad, but manages to show off one of the biggest advantages Samsung’s latest flagship has over the Apple device that is a few months away from being launched. It gets the point across, though we’re not sure advertisements are needed to let people know what they’re missing out on with the small-screen iPhones, though it’s always good to put the message across while being able to make fun of the competition, and the ad does that without taking too much of your time.

Check it out below.

New Galaxy Tab S commercials tout the multitude of benefits that come with a Super AMOLED Display

The Galaxy Tab S is here and has quickly garnered traction as the first true iPad competitor – primarily for its premium build and jaw-dropping display. And even though Samsung isn’t one to shy away from going at Apple explicitly in its advertisements, a recent series of commercials for the tablet mainly compare the Galaxy Tab S and its Super AMOLED display to nameless tablets with LCD displays.

With its 2560×1600 resolution screen providing unrivaled clarity and color accuracy, words do not suffice in expressing the advantages. In these commercials we see how the color range of the Galaxy Tab S is greater than that of any LCD, how the adaptive display is able to process and adjust the viewing experience in order to simplify how you use your tablet, and how the immense contrast ratio can bring your media to life unlike any of its competitors. The message is clear, but like we said, the words don’t do it justice – have a look for yourself.

Galaxy S5 LTE-A Display shows improved color accuracy

A few weeks after its limited, South Korean release, the display of the Galaxy S5 LTE-A has finally received its first analysis – courtesy of AnandTech. When DisplayMate hailed the Galaxy S5 as having the “best performing smartphone display”, it was hard to imagine what even Samsung could do to build upon this. As it turns out, the 5.1 inch, WQHD Super AMOLED display does indeed improve the clarity – upping the pixel density to a whopping 577 ppi – but offers a more marked difference in color saturation.

Due to the construction of Samsung’s AMOLED displays and its use of the diamond pixel matrix, green subpixels outnumber blue and red subpixels in a 2:1:1 ratio. This has led to users noticing a green-ish tint to the screen and skews the color accuracy on the GS5. Now even though the Galaxy S5 LTE-A features the same kind of AMOLED display, the bump to the 2560×1440 resolution helps in addressing the green-ish tint. Notice below that there is a very real difference in color accuracy between the two handsets.

The Galaxy S5 LTE-A (on the right) offers whiter whites

The Galaxy S5 LTE-A (on the right) offers whiter whites

Aside from this, the increased power consumption of the screen appears to be marginal and with that makes a strong case for Samsung being the premiere display manufacturer. One gripe may be that the global Samsung market is on pins and needles awaiting the point when such a dazzling display will be available to all; here’s hoping that there’s not much more waiting.

Low-end Tizen phone (SM-Z130H) heads to India for testing

After the Samsung Z, the first commercial Tizen handset, it looks like the Korean manufacturer is now working on a low-end Tizen phone. Components for a Tizen handset with model number SM-Z130H (the Z denotes the device is powered by Tizen) have been shipped to India for testing, and the low prices of those components indicate that the phone could be targeted at the extreme budget end of the market. That’s not surprising, since Samsung had announced that Tizen could run on phones with as low as 256 MB of RAM, and a low-end handset would allow consumers to try out the OS without breaking the bank.

However, it remains to be seen if the SM-Z130H will launch in markets anytime soon, given the issues Samsung is continuing to face in its attempt to launch even the Samsung Z, despite an official announcement having taken place weeks ago. Guess we will see what the future holds for Samsung’s in-house OS, though it’s looking rather bleak at the moment.

Samsung working on Ultrasound-enabled S Pen for future Galaxy Note devices?

Since the first Galaxy Note came along (and created an entirely new category of phones), Samsung has offered its S Pen stylus, which works in conjunction with a digitizer built into the display to allow pen input. Now, Samsung might be looking to shift to an S Pen that uses Ultrasound technology, according to a patent application published by the company in South Korea. The patent describes the working of an S Pen using ultrasound waves, wherein the waves would be picked up by up to four sensors on either side of a phone. Using ultrasound technology will negate the need for a digitizer on the screen, resulting in lower costs and a thinner display assembly.

Ultrasound-based stylus aren’t new – Qualcomm showcased a tablet earlier this year using such a stylus, with technology built into the chip maker’s Snapdragon 805 SoC enabling support without any additional hardware. Considering the Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 805 on one of its variants, an ultrasound S Pen might just accompany Samsung’s next phablet flagship. Well, that is if Samsung actually is aiming to implement the technology in an upcoming device any time soon, since tech seen in patent applications is not always guaranteed to see the light of day.

Samsung to launch metal-clad Galaxy Alpha smartphone lineup next month?

Grab your pitchforks and salt containers folks, as the rumor mill has reawakened and is once again hinting at a Samsung phone with a metallic construction. According to industry sources quoted by ETNews, Samsung is planning to launch a new lineup of smartphones different than the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note series, tentatively called the Galaxy Alpha. The Galaxy Alpha, or the first one in the new lineup, will reportedly be a premium smartphone made out of metal, and will be one of Samsung’s weapons against the iPhone 6, which will go on sale in September.

According to ETNews, the Galaxy Alpha – specs of which are currently unknown – will go against Samsung’s tradition of launching a Galaxy S flagship in the first half of a year and a Galaxy Note flagship in the second, and could see a change in the company’s strategy. However, we’re guessing that even if the Galaxy Alpha does launch as a flagship product, it probably won’t be a big part of Samsung’s strategy but will instead be a limited offering like the Galaxy S5 LTE-A.

As with all previous rumors about a metallic Samsung smartphone, this one needs to be taken with the proverbial grain of salt, though for proponents of metal, this will likely rekindle hope that Samsung has been listening and will finally follow what other industry players are doing (but knowing the company, it will likely be a few steps ahead of the competition when it comes to ergonomics and usability.)
