Samsung stops rolling out the Galaxy M31 update that bricked phones

Samsung started rolling out a new firmware update for the Galaxy M31 in India yesterday. The firmware brought the April 2020 security patch but this didn’t turn out to be a routine affair. Soon after the update was released, many Galaxy M31 owners complained on social media and the Samsung Members app that this firmware had bricked their phones while they were installing the update.

The issue doesn’t appear to be too widespread since the reports about devices bricking are still low. We were able to update our Galaxy M31 without running into any problems. However, it appears that Samsung has taken notice because the company is no longer sending out this firmware update over-the-air.

Galaxy M31 update that was bricking phones has been pulled

The firmware version M315FXXU1ATD1 that Samsung rolled out over-the-air for the Galaxy M31 in India yesterday has been pulled. It’s no longer being sent out and as such, it’s no longer possible to download it over-the-air, until Samsung resumes the roll out.

It’s not clear what’s causing this issue on the Galaxy M31 but it appears to be quite similar to the problem some Galaxy A70 owners have faced after installing the Android 10 update. The update caused a hardware mismatch on the Galaxy A70 which led to the devices being bricked but it’s not known for sure if that’s what’s also the problem on the Galaxy M31.

We do have the Galaxy M31 April 2020 patch firmware available in our database so downloading and flashing it manually through a Windows PC is currently the safest way to update your device. However, since there are no details on what’s causing this issue, we’d advise being very cautious and mindful of the risks should you choose to manually flash the firmware on your device.

This isn’t really the time to end up with a bricked phone, particularly because getting it fixed would require a trip to the Samsung service center, all of which happen to be closed in India right now because of the coronavirus lockdown.

Bixby is coming to the Gear S3 and Gear Sport in the near future

We reported yesterday that Samsung has decided to discontinue its old S Voice assistant. It wasn’t really Bixby’s predecessor as S Voice wasn’t a conversational assistant, however, it could get stuff done in response to voice commands. Ever since Bixby was launched in 2018, Samsung stopped shipping S Voice with new devices.

The company has now made the decision to discontinue S Voice. It won’t work on devices that have it from June 1, 2020. Samsung has decided to replace S Voice with Bixby on two smartwatches, though, the Gear S3 and Gear Sport to be precise.

Gear S3 and Gear Sport to get Bixby in next software update

Launched back in 2016, both the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier came with S Voice. The feature could be used to receive answers to questions, manage schedule, set reminders, alarms and more with just voice commands. 2017’s Gear Sport had S Voice as well.

Both of these smartwatches are on the list of devices that will lose support for S Voice on June 1, 2020. While the smartphones and tablets won’t receive Bixby, we’re told that the upcoming software update for the Gear S3 and Gear Sport will replace S Voice with Bixby.

Those who own the smartwatches that came after these need not worry. Bixby is already available on the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active while all of Samsung’s more recent smartwatches come with Bixby out of the box.

It’s unclear precisely when Samsung will release this software update for the Gear S3 and Gear Sport. At least those who own these smartwatches can rest assured that they will be able to use Bixby before S Voice is discontinued later this year.
