Galaxy A51 5G and Galaxy A21s added to the mid-range lineup in France

After the Galaxy A41, Samsung is bringing two more Galaxy A (2020) smartphones to France, namely the Galaxy A51 5G and the more budget-conscious Galaxy A21s. The former will go on sale at the end of the month via Samsung’s online store and partner retailers across France, whereas the latter should pop up on the company’s e-shop at any moment, seeing how support pages are already live.

Samsung France hasn’t revealed any pricing details for the Galaxy A51 5G and Galaxy A21s, but the 5G model will hit the shelves in black, pink, and white. Galaxy A21s buyers will get to choose from the colors black, blue, and white. Both smartphones will ship alongside a two-month subscription to YouTube Premium for free.

Two mid-range phones that couldn’t be any different

Although both the Galaxy A51 5G and Galaxy A21s belong to the same smartphone lineup, they could hardly be any different in terms of specifications. They do share a similar 6.5-inch display diagonal, but the Galaxy A51 5G has a higher resolution and a Super AMOLED panel instead of a PLS TFT. It’s also 5G-enabled, while the Galaxy A21s is limited to LTE connectivity.

Likewise, both models have a 48MP wide-angle main camera, but the other sensors comprising the quad-camera system – as well as the selfie shooters – are very different from one model to the other. And while the Galaxy A21s is powered by an Exynos 850 SoC, the Galaxy A51 5G conceals an Exynos 980 chipset under the hood. All these differences combined should lead to a price gap of around $350-$400, at least judging by Samsung’s launch prices in other markets.

Samsung and Etopia to build 6,000 tech-filled eco houses of the future

Samsung Electronics’ efforts towards a sustainable green future have led to an unexpected partnership with UK’s Etopia, a company that leverages the latest technologies and environmental awareness to build durable and energy-efficient houses. Project Etopia CEO and Founder says the company pioneered technologies in energy, IoT, and construction industries to build eco houses, schools, commercial buildings etc. that have either no negative impact on the environment or actually provide more energy than they use.

Etopia constructs some of the most energy-efficient buildings in the world, capable of achieving an average EPC rating of 103/100 (A+). The company wants to expand across America and Asia, and the partnership with Samsung is going to accelerate Etopia’s climate change goals, all the while bringing Samsung itself more into the forefront of sustainability.

Phase one is underway with 6,000 houses planned for the UK

According to the recent announcement, phase one of the partnership between Samsung Electronics and Etopia is now underway. The first phase consists of building 6,000 new eco-friendly houses in the UK over the next five years.

These houses built by Etopia will employ various Samsung technologies. Energy-efficient hydro units that can be connected to solar panels will replace traditional combustion boilers, and the houses will rely on Samsung’s state-of-the-art heat pump technology for both air cooling as well as water cooling and heating.

Galaxy Note 9 One UI 2.1 update finally breaks German and Korean exclusivity

It was nearly two months ago that Samsung confirmed it would be bringing the One UI 2.1 update to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9, and the company finally released the update last week, kicking things off with the Galaxy Note 9. The wait for One UI 2.1 hasn’t yet ended for everyone, however. The Galaxy Note 9’s One UI 2.1 update was released in Germany and Korea initially, and Samsung hasn’t enabled a wider rollout for the update yet.

And it seems Samsung wants to take it slow, as it’s been a week since One UI 2.1 started making its way to Galaxy Note 9 owners in Germany and Korea and it’s only now that we’re seeing another country getting the coveted update.

Galaxy Note 9 One UI 2.1 update available in India

Samsung started rolling out the One UI 2.1 update for the Note 9 in India earlier today. Owners of the device can download it over the air by opening their phone’s Settings app, selecting Software update, and tapping Download and install. The One UI 2.1 firmware for India is also available in our firmware archive and can be used to manually update the phone with the help of a Windows PC.

As you would expect, the Indian release of One UI 2.1 includes the same new features that German and Korean users have been enjoying for a week. The update includes a number of new camera modes, including Single Take, Pro video mode (with shutter speed control), and My Filters. Other features include Quick Share and Music Share for sharing files and audio Bluetooth connections with other devices, an updated Samsung Keyboard with multilingual translation, improved AR Emoji, and auto-grouping of photos and albums in the Gallery app.

Have you received the One UI 2.1 update on your Galaxy Note 9, either in India or a different country (other than Germany or South Korea)? Let us know down in the comments!

Samsung was the biggest smartphone brand in Southeast Asian market in Q1 2020

Samsung is the number one smartphone brand globally in terms of units sold. However, it has been losing its edge in some Asian and Southeast Asian markets. After it lost to OPPO in the Southeast Asian market during Q4 2019, the South Korean firm regained its top spot during Q1 2020.

According to a new report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s market share in the Southeast Asian market reached 18.9 percent during the first quarter of this year. Chinese firm OPPO’s market share was 18.7 percent, losing to Samsung by just 0.2 percent. Xiaomi, Vivo, and Realme stood at third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively. Xiaomi’s market share was 14.8 percent, while Vivo and Realme captured 13.6 percent and 7.3 percent of the market, respectively.

Samsung has been the biggest smartphone brand in the Southeast Asian market for a few years, but it got beat by OPPO in the last quarter of 2019. It is being reported that improved sales of premium smartphones in the region is boding well for Samsung. Last year, 46 percent of the phones sold in the region were priced below $100, but that number has now dropped to 27 percent. Smartphones priced above $600 contributed to 10 percent of overall sales, up from 4 percent in the previous quarter.

In the global market, Huawei briefly overtook Samsung during April 2020, but the overall number for the quarter showed Samsung as the biggest brand with an 18.5 percent share of the market, while Huawei came in second with a market share of 14.2 percent. The South Korean smartphone giant also improved its ASP (average selling price) to the highest in six years.

Samsung to make most of its TVs in India for the local market

Samsung has reportedly decided to manufacture most of its TVs for the Indian market locally. This decision has been taken to take advantage of zero import duties on open cell TV panels. Local manufacturing will also reduce supply chain disruptions, something that the South Korean firm faced during the COVID-19 lockdown period over the past few months.

Under the new ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, the Indian government has been requesting consumer electronics firms to set up the required supply chain in India and locally manufacture their goods. Samsung, the largest TV brand in India, will now make 85 to 90 percent of all the TVs it sells in the country locally. The company also makes Galaxy phones locally in its biggest smartphone factory in Noida.

Samsung is working with two contract manufacturing firms in India

Samsung has partnered with the Chinese firm Skyworth to manufacture TVs in Hyderabad, India. The company has also extended its partnership with Indian firm Dixon Technologies for making TVs with screen sizes measuring from 43 inches and going up to 58 inches. Until recently, Dixon was making 32-inch and 43-inch TVs for Samsung, but the task has now been handed over to Skyworth.

After the Indian government started imposing import duty on open cell TV panels in 2018, Samsung had stopped making TVs in India. However, the import duty was removed last year, after which the South Korean firm started assembling TVs in India once again. Open cell TV panels make up for 70 percent of the TV’s price.

Other TV brands like LG, Panasonic, Sony, and Xiaomi have been making their TVs in India. OnePlus, on the other hand, which uses Samsung’s QLED panels in its TVs, has been importing TVs from China. However, it will now start assembling TVs locally through its contract manufacturing partner Skyworth.

The TV market has reportedly bounced back after the COVID-19 lockdown period ended, and most brands have been seeing 35-50% more sales compared to the same period last year. Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung have claimed that they are experiencing 1.5x to 2x more TV sales of their large-sized TVs.
