New update brings eSIM functionality to T-Mobile’s Galaxy Note 20

Samsung had started rolling out the March 2021 security patch to the unlocked variants of the Galaxy Note 20 last month. However, the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on T-Mobile’s network are now receiving the update. Apart from the new security patch, the phones have also received the eSIM functionality with the new software.

The latest software update for the Galaxy Note 20 on T-Mobile’s network has firmware version N981USQU2DUC8, while the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s update has firmware version N986USQU2DUC8. Apart from the March 2021 security patch, the new updates also bring the eSIM functionality to Galaxy Note 20 series smartphones. Thanks to the combination of eSIM and a physical SIM card slot, these smartphones now have the dual-SIM dual-standby (DSDS) functionality. The new updates also improve the stability of the phones and fix some known bugs.

If you are a Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy Note 20 Ultra user on T-Mobile’s network in the US, you might have already received a notification for the latest software update. If you haven’t received it by any chance, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install.

The Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra were launched last year with Android 10. In December 2020, the phones received the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 update that brought a new UI design and lots of new features and enhancements. Samsung then rolled out the One UI 3.1 update to these smartphones in February 2021.

Should Samsung stop releasing a new Galaxy S / Note flagship each year?

The Galaxy Note 21 might not see the light of day before the end of the year, and while fans of the series might be disappointed by this turn of events, this could also be an opportunity in disguise. An opportunity for Samsung to increase the perceived value of its flagships and literally change the way smartphone OEMs do business.

The smartphone market might be one of the most volatile and excessive tech segments. To be frank, sometimes it feels like OEMs are milking it for everything it’s got, and for whatever reason, everyone’s just going along with it. New flagship phones are being released every 12 months or even sooner, and they haven’t gotten any cheaper over time.

Samsung’s not excluded from this either. The company’s been releasing new flagship phones every 6 months for years now, all under the guise of two different flagship lineups — the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note. Now the company has a third and fourth flagship series in the mix, namely the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip.

Needless to say, Samsung’s portfolio never felt busier than it does now, so perhaps it’s time for some restructuring. The supposedly-delayed launch of the Galaxy Note 21 could mark the beginning of this, and we believe that Samsung might have an opportunity here to set an example, stand by its products, and show that it values the customer’s time and resources like no other OEM does.

How good is a $1,000+ flagship, really, if it’s superseded in 12 months?

This is — in my humble opinion — one of the biggest contradictions of the current mobile industry. Flagship phones are being hyped and praised by their creators at launch as these incredible pocket PCs and future-proof investments, but then again, OEMs never shy away from showing off their (sometimes minimal) advancements and draw performance parallels 6 or 12 months later down the line when a sequel is announced.

In other words, the mobile market almost looks as if it intentionally devalues its own self every 12 months or less just for the sake of a new model hitting the shelves and counting towards shipment figures.

So what’s the solution? Well, assuming that this is even considered a problem by OEMs and Samsung — it probably isn’t yet — the solution might be to stop releasing new Galaxy S and Galaxy Note models every year, and instead switch to an offset two-year launch schedule for the two series. The Galaxy Note 21 would hit the shelves next year; the Galaxy S22 would be scheduled for 2023; and the Galaxy Note 22 would then be released in 2024 and so on.

This way, Samsung would kill two (or more) birds with one stone. The company would still technically be able to release a new flagship every 12 months, just like its rivals — even if it’s not from the same series every time — while focusing on developing each Galaxy S and Note sequel for nearly two years instead of one.

This would — hopefully — lead to better designs, more ambitious and future-proof hardware, and an increased perceived value for every new model. Perhaps customers would be more inclined to buy a new Galaxy S / Note flagship rather than a product from a rival company, knowing that their latest purchase won’t be superseded for at least 24 months.

In closing, every SamMobile team member loves mobile technology and especially Samsung products. We’re very excited for every new announcement, and of course, every new announcement gives us an opportunity to interact with our community. With that in mind, you could say that we’re going against our own interest as a news website to claim that a 12-month launch cycle for flagships is too short, but we do believe that Samsung needs to set an example. The company would grow its image from an OEM capable of creating a great flagship every year to a mobile company that delivers unprecedented value in the mobile space without insulting the customer’s wallet.

Of course, there will always be a group of people who will want to upgrade to the latest and greatest technologies as soon as possible, and they might not agree with a 24-month launch schedule unless they’re willing to switch back and forth between the Galaxy S and Note lineups every year. The switch would be easier than before though, especially now that the S Pen has been added to the Galaxy S family of devices.

Do you agree with the idea that customers and Samsung’s image alike could benefit from slower flagship releases without the Galaxy S and Note lineups overlapping every year? Or perhaps you have a different take on the current mobile landscape and where it should be headed next? Feel free to leave a comment below.

Here’s more stunning Galaxy Book Pro 360 renders

In case you’ve missed this week’s sighting of the Galaxy Book Pro and Galaxy Book Pro 360, we have some more renders for you to enjoy. They’re said to depict not just those two devices, but also a brand-new Galaxy Book model. Plus, they’re as official-looking as computer-generated imagery gets.

That last part shouldn’t come as a surprise, given how the source of this scoop is known industry insider Evan Blass, better known by his online handle @evleaks.

Connectivity galore

Given what we’ve seen from previous leaks and certifications, there are several things of note here, starting with the connectivity features. Namely, Samsung appears to have improved those quite a bit and at least one Galaxy Book Pro 360 variant will ostensibly sport two USB-C ports, one USB-A slot, and an HDMI connector.

The Galaxy Book Pro, meanwhile, is only missing that USB-A option from the equation. And while it wasn’t included in today’s batch of leaked product renders, the Galaxy Book Go that’s also expected to arrive as part of this notebook series was previously rumored to feature dual USB-C ports.

That particular model is also said to be the only one to feature an Arm-based Snapdragon system-on-a-chip from Qualcomm, The rest of this year’s Galaxy Book lineup should instead utilize Intel’s 11th-gen CPUs.

Samsung’s been giving out a not-so-subtle hints about something big happening on the 28th, so it’s safe to assume that’s the day we’ll finally learn everything there is to know about its 2021 Windows laptops. Perhaps this move even signals a more serious commitment to the ultrabook segment from the Korean tech giant, but let’s not get our hopes up just yet. Especially given how neither the Galaxy Book Pro 360, nor the Galaxy Book Go are likely to go for anything below a four-digit premium, no matter the currency.

New Sony PS5 update adds support for 4K 120Hz HDR to Samsung TVs

Sony has finally released an update for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) console that fixes the compatibility issues with Samsung TVs. The PS5 was supposed to offer support for 4K gaming at 120 frames per second with HDR enabled, but up until now this mode was not possible on Samsung TVs due to a bug related to HDMI 2.1 and Sony’s firmware.

Samsung confirmed back in January that it is working together with Sony to address the issue. Sony said it will likely release the update in March but that obviously didn’t happen. Thankfully, the firmware update is apparently ready for the masses. Sony has yet to publish the update’s changelog on its official page but according to Forbes, the company is now rolling out the update to PS5 units worldwide.

Once updated, the PS5 will finally be capable of displaying 4K HDR content at 120fps, but that’s not all. Additional reports claim that the latest update finally allows PS5 owners to move games from the internal SSD to a USB drive, though this feature is meant only for storage purposes as USB drives aren’t fast enough to match the internal SSD. Unfortunately, support for M.2 storage is still missing but it should be added later this summer, potentially leading to increased SSD sales for Samsung’s memory business.

Samsung’s on the fence regarding Joe Biden’s chip infrastructure plans

Monday’s White House meeting between US President Joe Biden and the industry’s largest semiconductor companies — including Samsung — has concluded. The details of the summit remain behind closed curtains but the US President’s intentions have become clearer, as he highlighted the importance of having a strong semiconductor infrastructure.

‘These chips, these wafers […] batteries, broadband — it’s all infrastructure. We need to build the infrastructure of today and not repair the one of yesterday’ said Joe Biden while holding up a wafer. According to The Korea Herald, the President reportedly added that the plan he proposes “will protect our supply chain and revitalize American manufacturing.”

Now, as far as Samsung is concerned, it was the only South Korean company present at the summit. The details of the meeting remain unknown but some industry watchers believe that Samsung and the White House may have agreed upon building a new chip fab on US soil, though it’s unclear whether the chip fab would be located in Texas, Arizona, or New York.

Other analysts believe Samsung isn’t entirely convinced by the prospect

Although Samsung’s alleged plans to build a new $17 billion chip manufacturing plant in the USA have supposedly been exposed at the beginning of the year, some analysts now believe that Samsung isn’t necessarily convinced that building a new chip fab in the USA is the best way to move forward.

This is because Samsung is also feeling pressure from the South Korean government to establish a stronger local supply chain and contribute to an improved local semiconductor infrastructure. Market watchers believe that Samsung might be split between the USA and its home country. The company will have to carefully consider the costs of each potential investment and determine which location could offer strategic advantages for its clients.

All things considered, Joe Biden seemingly confirmed that the White House wants to build a strong chip fab infrastructure in the USA, though only time will tell if Samsung will or won’t be involved.

Samsung becomes the first company in nine years to win this award

Samsung has been focusing a lot on reducing its environmental footprint over the past decade. Thanks to its efforts, the company has become the first brand in nine years to win the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) prestigious and rare ENERGY STAR Corporate Commitment Award.

The South Korean firm has been working with EPA for a long time and has taken a multi-faceted approach to address the climate change crisis. Samsung has made various changes to its designing, manufacturing, distribution, repairing, and recycling processes over the years to reach this stage. This year, Samsung has 303 ENERGY STAR-rated devices, including all of its Galaxy tablets, front-load washers and dishwashers, 86% of its refrigerators, 78% of its top-load washers, and 54% of its dryers.

The company is no longer bundling chargers and earphones in the box of its flagship phones. Moreover, the chargers it sells are made using PCM (Post-Consumer Materials). Samsung’s lifestyle TV range—The Frame, The Serif, and The Sero—comes with eco-friendly packaging that can be upcycled and turned into creative pieces that can be used for home decoration and storage. The innovative packaging design recently helped the company win a few iF Design awards.

Samsung uses 100% renewable energy to power its plants in China, Europe, and the US. The company is now among the top in EPA’s Green Power Partnership program. Moreover, Samsung has partnered with EPA to improve the new ENERGY STAR Tenant Space program for energy management improvements by tenants in a leased building space. Samsung 837 (New York City), the Samsung Solutions Center (Washington DC), Samsung’s customer contact center in Simpsonville (South Carolina), and Samsung locations in Plano (Texas) are ENERGY STAR or Tenant Space certified.

The company has received eight Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence awards from EPA since 2013. The company says that winning these awards has made it realize that it needs to push forward in the future and set a benchmark for others in the industry.

KS Choi, President and CEO, Samsung Electronics North America, said, “Samsung is committed to helping mitigate climate change through our products, practices, and operations, especially in the area of energy efficiency. We are extremely honored to receive this rare and prestigious award and commit to continuing to raise the bar on energy efficiency as an important part of tackling climate change.

Rivian’s electric vehicles will use Samsung’s batteries

Samsung SDI is among the world’s biggest battery makers, and it supplies batteries for smartphones, laptops, wearables, and even electric vehicles. Now, the company has announced that it will supply batteries for Rivian’s electric pickup trucks. The company’s pickup trucks will be launched later this year.

Rivian and Samsung SDI have jointly announced that the companies have been working together for quite some time. The deliveries of Rivian’s R1T, which has a starting price of $75,000, are expected to begin in June 2021. Amazon and Ford back the American electric vehicle company, and it is expected to make a splash with its offroading-capable R1S and R1T. The company is expected to offer a tough fight to the recently-unveiled Hummer EV and Tesla’s Cybertruck.

Both electric pickup trucks from Rivian have one electric motor to power each tire. The R1T is a five-seater electric SUV with a loading bay, while the R1S is a seven-seater without a loading bay. Both pickup trucks come equipped with multiple touchscreen systems, 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, wireless charging, 6 USB ports for charging, and four 110V home-style power outlets and Alexa for voice commands.

Samsung SDI is quickly gaining more electric vehicle firms as its customers. The company already supplies batteries to BMW and Ford, and it recently partnered with Hyundai for its future electric cars. Samsung’s battery manufacturing arm had recently announced that it would invest $1 billion for an EV battery plant in Hungary.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 2 firmware development is now underway

The Galaxy Z Flip 2 is going to be one of the two foldable smartphones that Samsung launches this year. The company hasn’t confirmed as yet when it’s going to arrive. Its predecessor was launched alongside the Galaxy S20 last year but Samsung decided against launching it early this year.

There haven’t been many leaks concerning the device just yet. We do know what model number it will have and have an idea of the display changes that might be made. We also know now that firmware development for the Galaxy Z Flip 2 has begun.

Galaxy Z Flip 2 firmware development has begun

Samsung is working on the firmware for the Galaxy Z Flip 2. We’ve come to know this just days after finding out that firmware development has also begun for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This gives further weight to rumors that both new foldables might be unveiled at the same time.

There’s no official announcement yet regarding the launch of the new foldables. However, a new report has claimed that Samsung will unveil these devices in July this year. That’s going to be a bit earlier than what people would have expected.

Perhaps Samsung is moving up the launch in order to compensate for the lack of a new Galaxy Note flagship this year. Samsung has already confirmed that there won’t be a Galaxy Note 21. It’s now expected to bring support for the S Pen to the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

Bearing model number SM-F711, the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will come with 128 and 256GB storage options. It will also ship with Android 11 and One UI 3.5 out of the box.

Galaxy A60 is latest Samsung smartphone to get Android 11 update

Samsung has been pretty impressive over the past year in terms of software updates. The company has already released the Android 11 update to almost all its recent mid-range and high-end smartphones. Now, Samsung has started rolling out the latest version of Android to the Galaxy A60.

The Galaxy A60 (SM-A6060), which was launched in China in early 2019 with Android 9, has now started receiving the Android 11 update. The new software update bumps up the firmware version of the phone to A6060ZCU3CUD3 and brings the March 2021 security patch. Since this is a major software update, we advise you to use a Wi-Fi network to download it.

We are still unsure if the Galaxy A60 is receiving the One UI 3.0 or One UI 3.1 update. In any case, the new update should bring most of the Android 11-related features, including one-time permissions, auto permissions reset, chat bubbles, conversations section in the notifications area, a media player widget in the quick settings area, and easier access to smart home controls.

The update also brings refreshed UI design, improved stock apps, a better version of the Samsung Keyboard, more Dynamic Lockscreen and AoD widget options, more lock screen widgets, video backgrounds for voice calls, improved version of Digital Wellbeing and parental controls, and more options in Bixby Routines.

If you are a Galaxy A60 user in China and haven’t received the update yet, you can manually check for it by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. Alternatively, you can also download the entire firmware from our firmware section and flash it manually. The Galaxy A60 had received the Android 10 update exactly one year ago.

April 2021 Android security update reaches Galaxy Note 8

Samsung’s implementation of the April 2021 Android security update has just reached the Galaxy Note 8. The patch is already live across Latin America and is expected to keep expanding to more territories momentarily. The Galaxy Note 8 thus joined the dozen or so Samsung devices that already made the jump to the latest firmware.

The newly introduced patch is identified by PDA version number N950FXXSEDUC2. No other changes or additions are part of this release, as was to be expected from an update targeting a 2017 smartphone.

How long will the Galaxy Note 8 be supported?

In regards to Android security updates, the Galaxy Note 8 has been on a quarterly release cycle as of last year. Meaning there’s still only a couple of updates left in the pipeline before we enter the “no promises” territory. That’s hardly a surprise for a device that will be turning three this summer.

As per usual, you don’t have to sit idly in preparation for the April 2021 patch to arrive on your Galaxy Note 8. If you bring up the Settings app and go to Software update > Download and install, you’ll trigger a manual search for the latest OTA. Which will likely succeed if the rollout already reached your country. Failing that, you can also refer to our firmware pages and download the full system images for the Galaxy Note 8 containing this month’s security patch level. Just make sure to follow the flashing instructions to the letter, back up your smartphone data beforehand, and be aware that things can still go wrong afterward.
