Slapping an S Pen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be ridiculous

There are a lot of rumors floating around about the Galaxy S21 series these days. Unconfirmed information about the specs, design, features and price is not out of the ordinary. We see this happen every year. Something else is also being rumored this year and it has the potential of upsetting many Samsung fans.

It has consistently been rumored over the past few months that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will have S Pen support. One major leak that covered the entire Galaxy S21 series also reiterated this claim. So as it stands, there’s reason to believe that the Galaxy S21 Ultra may indeed be the first Galaxy S phone from Samsung with the stylus.

Now, you’d expect the implementation of that to be similar to the Galaxy Note. The S Pen is stored inside a silo carved out in the body of the phone. There’s no need to carry it separately. This has been the case since 2011 when the very first Galaxy Note handset was released.

That may not be the case for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Word on the street is that the device won’t even ship with the stylus in the box. This means that you’ll have to buy one separately. How will you carry it if it doesn’t fit inside the phone? Samsung is reportedly going to sell you a case that will both protect the device and store the S Pen externally. So that’s more money out of your pocket.

Any potential benefit that the rumored cut in prices for the Galaxy S21 series might provide will surely be exceeded by the out of pocket expenses for the stylus and cover. It’s also going to be incredibly restrictive for the customer.

There’s no option but to pay if you want the full S Pen experience on the phone. You could save some money and buy a cheaper third-party cover that stores the stylus but you can’t use a stylus that’s not made by Samsung.

This is likely to be a huge turnoff for Galaxy Note owners who have come to know the S Pen as an integral part of the smartphone experience for the better part of a decade. It almost feels like as if Samsung designs all Galaxy Note phones around the stylus. The S Pen is the non-negotiable part, everything else that can or can’t be done for a new Galaxy Note is up for debate.

That’s why the Galaxy Note provides a user experience unmatched by any phone on the market. Everything from its iconic boxy design to its feature suite is created with the express purpose of allowing users to get the most out of the S Pen. This is one of the reasons why the Galaxy Note series thrived in a market that has long given up on the stylus.

The S Pen doesn’t feel like an afterthought on the Galaxy Note series. It will on the Galaxy S21 Ultra, in my opinion. Merely slapping the S Pen on its top-of-the-line flagship won’t be enough to convince existing Galaxy Note owners to switch over, assuming that’s why Samsung is doing this. There have been rumors that the Galaxy Note series may be killed off next year.

For starters, many customers may prefer not using the S Pen at all instead of paying extra for it. A replacement S Pen for the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra costs $40 so we can expect one for the Galaxy S21 Ultra to cost about the same. Prices from Samsung’s official cases range from $40 to $65. Assuming you buy everything from Samsung, it may be an additional $100 on top of a phone that’s absolutely going to cost more than $1000.

Samsung could try to make this more palatable by offering a bundle as a pre-order incentive but that would be like placing a band-aid on a gaping wound. The millions of people who will buy the phone after the pre-order period won’t get to take advantage of the offer.

Let’s put cost aside for a moment and consider where the S Pen would fit in the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s user experience. Will features like Air command, Air actions, Anywhere Actions, etc all be ported? Will we get the same 9ms latency as the Note 20 Ultra? Would it even feel as natural to use the S Pen on the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s more curvy body compared to the Galaxy Note?

Samsung may also need to change the messaging around the Galaxy S21 Ultra a bit. There has been a clear distinction between the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series over the past decade. The latter was aimed at professionals. It was meant for people who wanted to get serious work done on the go. The S Pen was marketed as the solution to all of their remote work problems. Even customers who hadn’t owned a Galaxy Note before knew exactly what it was good for.

There will be a need to demonstrate that the S Pen hasn’t been slapped on the Galaxy S21 Ultra just for the heck of it. Or since there may not be a new Galaxy Note device in 2020, Samsung needs something to hold over Note loyalists until they decide to splurge for its S Pen-equipped foldable.

The S Pen absolutely makes sense for something like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It doesn’t quite fit into the equation for the Galaxy S21 Ultra. This should not be a stop-gap solution for Galaxy Note loyalists. That’s what makes this a ridiculous proposition, in my opinion.

Many fans continue to hope that it’s all just speculation about the Galaxy Note’s demise. I count myself among them. I’m not too thrilled by the idea of S Pen support on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. That being said, I’ll keep an open mind and see how Samsung tries to sell it to us.

We may have answers soon enough. As we’ve exclusively revealed, the Galaxy S21 announcement has been scheduled for early January 2021. We’ll know for sure then exactly how this is going to play out.

[Poll] If the Galaxy Note 21 doesn’t come, what will you buy instead?

Galaxy Note fans, and there are a lot of them, found themselves in a spot of bother. Rumors have started picking up that there may not be a Galaxy Note 21 next year. Now it’s not uncommon to hear outlandish rumors about Samsung devices long before they’re due.

However, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra now expected to feature S Pen support, many are taking that as an indication of Samsung shaking things up next year. A foldable phone with an S Pen has been rumoured about as well. While it’s not known if the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will have one, many would expect that it might possibly feature the stylus.

As disappointing as it may be, these changes might lead to the demise of the Galaxy Note series. Samsung’s high-end smartphone lineup is already pretty crowded. It has two foldable phones, three Galaxy S21 flagships plus a Fan Edition due next year. Many analysts are of the view that something’s got to give and it’s feared that the curtain will fall on the Galaxy Note.

Galaxy Note loyalists often find it difficult to use any other device. If this does happen and there’s no Galaxy Note 21, what will you buy instead? The S Pen is what binds a lot of customers to the Note lineup. Would switch to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 or the Galaxy S21 Ultra for the S Pen experience?

It’s important to note, pun unintended, that both of these devices may not store the S Pen internally like the Galaxy Note. Samsung is rumored to offer a separate case for the Galaxy S21 Ultra that will store the S Pen externally. Given the nature of foldable devices, this may also be the solution for the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra may not come with the S Pen in the box. Customers will have to buy one separately. That’s another problem they don’t face with the Galaxy Note. Evidently, none of these devices will replace the Note. Customers may just be backed into a corner. If they need the S Pen, they have to pay extra for the stylus and the cover to carry it.

This is all very early speculation so fans can still hold out hope that the Galaxy Note series isn’t dying. If you believe it to be the contrary, what Samsung device would you buy next year? Vote below and share your thoughts with us in the comments.

Samsung retains insane DRAM margin in spite of dwindling Q3 2020 sales

Samsung’s global leadership in the DRAM market survived the third quarter of the year, in spite of an all-around sales drop the company experienced, new industry data reveals. DRAM chip sales in Q3 2020 amounted to approximately $7.21 billion, a 3.1% decrease compared to the same period in 2019. The NAND flash market experienced a similar trend, with Samsung’s share of its global sales shrinking by 2.2% annually, but not enough to displace it from the number one spot.

That’s all according to a new Q3 2020 report authored by established market watcher TrendForce. The same data set indicates Samsung’s largest DRAM rival, SK Hynix, remained in second place overall, seizing some 28.2% of the market, 1.9% down year-over-year.

Samsung’s margin remains at unprecedented levels

The dynamic between Samsung and SK Hynix might become more intensive moving forward due to the latter’s acquisition of Intel’s NAND flash memory business – as mediocre as it is – in a $9 billion deal announced last month. Both companies experienced a decline most notably associated with an overall decrease to the average selling price of electronics using their tech, even as shipment volumes saw some marginal increases during the third quarter of the year, according to TrendForce’s interpretation of the data at hand.

At the same time, Samsung’s most notable quarterly achievement in the field has to be its ability to retain a 41% operating margin. For added reference, SK Hynix’s own margin dropped by six percentage points to 29% during the observed period, continuing to follow the correction prompted by server industry trends. Whether Samsung can maintain this performance level with even more optimization efforts remains to be seen but it’s certainly the best-positioned DRAM manufacturer to do so.

Galaxy A02 budget phone is powered by massive 5,000mAh battery

Another piece of the puzzle that is the Galaxy A02 was discovered recently in a certificate issued by the CPQD R&D center in Latin America. The documents reveal the model number pertaining to the battery powering the device, and the same HQ-50S model number was also spotted at TUV Rheinland where it was revealed that the unit in question has a capacity of 5,000mAh.

In other words, the Galaxy A02, and possibly the Galaxy M02, is going to be powered by a battery that has a typical capacity of 5,000mAh. The reason why the Galaxy M02 could also share this characteristic is because it already shares other key specs with the Galaxy A02 and early evidence shows that they might be one and the same device rebadged for different markets.

A whopping 2,000mAh increase over the previous generation

The Galaxy A02 is meant to succeed the ongoing Galaxy A01, which means that the sequel almost doubles the battery capacity of its predecessor. The Galaxy A01 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery. As yet, there’s no information regarding wireless charging capabilities.

Other Galaxy A02 specs that have been revealed previously include 32GB/64GB of built-in storage, and 2GB of RAM. The phone will run Android 10 out of the box and it might be powered by the Snapdragon 450 chipset.

The Galaxy A01 was released in January 2020 following a December 2019 unveiling so there is a chance that the Galaxy A02 will be unveiled before the end of the year. The phone is expected to carry a price of under $200.

Samsung optimistic about wearable prospects after 2020 growth

Samsung has been seeing some rather decent growth in the wearable segment through the majority of 2020, a company executive revealed. In an interview held during this year’s East Tech West conference, Samsung Electronics SVP Taejong Jay Yang said that global wearable sales grew by at least 30% this year, adding that some periods were even much more explosive than that. This is all in spite of the fact that this year’s happenings resulted in people spending less time away from home.

On the other hand, the lingering health concerns that 2020 placed front and center made many people more conscientious about health analytics. Something modern wearables are well-versed in, as Taejong explained, pointing to that trend as a major factor driving the recent growth on a global scale. The executive refused to disclose any Samsung-specific figures.

Wearable sales and profits are wildly different things

While added sales momentum can hardly be a bad thing, it’s worth pointing out that a 30% growth isn’t necessarily a cause for celebration at Samsung. Because the market is already ultra-competitive, and things will only get worse for manufacturers should Google succeed in acquiring Fitbit. Meaning sustainable growth may require a bigger boost to both sales and profit margins.

Not to mention the fact that the cited figure is an industry-wide remark, so it’s possible that Samsung’s own business hasn’t been following the same trajectory. As suggested by the fact Taejong only reflected on it in passing. Moreover, Samsung has been giving away quite a lot of its wearables in recent months, usually to new buyers of its latest flagships such as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition. This, too, would suggest the firm overestimated global demand and its ability to compete, leaving it with a large stock of unsold inventory.

Samsung launches official leather covers for Galaxy Z Fold 2, Buds Live

Samsung today introduced a number of official leather covers for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable, as well as the Galaxy Buds Live wireless earbuds. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G Leather Flip Cover appears to be a direct follow-up on last year’s accessory which already leaked several months ago. Today’s launch only includes two of the previously sighted colors, however.

The Galaxy Buds Live Leather Cover, meanwhile, is a first for Samsung. Available in dark blue and gray, this accessory will add some style to your wireless audio setup. Assuming you’re in South Korea, that is. There’s still no word on when we might expect these gadgets to make their way to other markets around the world. A wider release does seem plausible, based on Samsung’s established track record with mobile accessories.

First-party Galaxys leather covers aren’t the only party in town

The Leather Flip Cover for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is available to buy in South Korea as of today, priced at the equivalent of $90. Whereas the Galaxy Buds Live Leather Cover is retailing at 22,000 won, or just under $20. As per usual, if and when these products release globally, their prices are likely to be somewhat higher. Which isn’t to say they are without meaningful alternatives.

New Galaxy Z Fold 2 owners interested in more serious protection can hence always look toward third-party case manufacturers, as well. For example, the latest big name in the accessory business to support Samsung’s latest foldable was Spigen, whose new cases debuted just earlier this week.

Google Assistant now rolling out to 2020 Samsung smart TVs in these countries

Samsung has announced that it has started rolling out Google Assistant to its 2020 smart TV lineup in France, Germany, Italy, and the UK. Its smart TVs in Brazil, India, South Korea, and Spain will get access to Google’s AI-powered digital voice assistant by the end of November 2020. Six more countries will get the Google Assistant functionality by the end of this year.

Google Assistant brings enhanced controls and discoverability to Samsung smart TVs, including 4K and 8K QLED TVs, Crystal UHD TVs, The Frame, The Serif, The Sero, and The Terrace. Using Google Assistant, users can browse channels, control compatible smart home devices, control volume, get answers to their questions, open apps, set the alarm, and much more.

Users can also get the latest sports scores, weather forecast, and access Google services, including Google Calendar, Google Maps, and Google Photos. Google Assistant and Google Home compatible smart home devices such as smart lights and thermostats can also be controlled using voice commands.

Seline Han, Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “The use of voice assistants on our Smart TVs has grown exponentially since Bixby’s launch in 2018. With Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa now supported, we are inviting our consumers to ask even more of their Smart TVs.

While Bixby has been a part of Samsung’s smart TVs experience for a couple of years, the South Korean tech giant started offering Amazon’s Alexa across its smart TVs earlier this year. Currently, Alexa is available on Samsung smart TVs in fourteen countries across the globe. Users can choose Alexa, Bixby, or Google Assistant to be their default voice assistant.
