Galaxy S10 series getting update with Note 10 features in the US

More than a month after its European debut, the software update that introduced multiple Galaxy Note 10 features to the Galaxy S10 series is making its way to the US. Samsung has officially announced that stateside customers will soon begin to receive the update on their Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+, or Galaxy S10 5G. At least T-Mobile has already pushed out the update to its users. Unlocked models and other carrier variants should also be getting it soon.

If you have been keeping up with our coverage in recent weeks, you’ll know that the update in question is a substantial one. It brings over all of the new camera features that debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 – there’s AR Doodle, Live Focus video, Night mode for the front camera and the telephoto camera, a new effect called Glitch for Live Focus bokeh pictures, Hyperlapse mode for the front camera, and Super Steady recording in Hyperlapse mode. Also included is an enhanced video editor that lets you add subtitles to videos and easily stitch multiple clips together.

Those who use their phones for work (and those who want an edge over others while playing PUBG) will be glad to hear that the update enables the Galaxy S10 to be used with Samsung DeX on a Windows or Mac PC. It also adds Link to Windows integration, which allows you to connect to and view notifications, gallery images, and send and receive messages on your PC with Microsoft’s Your Phone Companion app with a single tap. Finally, the update brings the Dynamic Lock screen feature that changes the lock screen wallpaper every time you turn the screen on and off.

If you own a Galaxy S10 in the US, you can check if the update, which includes the October security patch, is available for you from the Software update menu of the phone’s Settings app. As mentioned above, the update may not be available for everyone right away; only T-Mobile is rolling it out as of now. Do let us know if you have received the update on your device by leaving a comment down below.

Galaxy Fold gets new update and October 2019 security patch in USA

Samsung is now rolling out a new software update for the unlocked Galaxy Fold in the United States. The update bearing firmware version F900U1UEU1ASJ4 follows the update that rolled out in France, the UAE, and other countries for the device last week. As you can tell from the screenshot below, the changelog is not as descriptive but the update launching in the US should include the same features, at least in theory.

You never know with Samsung given how many of its previous US-based releases differed from updates launched elsewhere. Nevertheless, the changelog looks similar and does mention improvements to the Camera and the inclusion of the October 2019 security patch.

Galaxy Note 10 camera features may or may have not been included

The update for the Galaxy Fold in the US weighs around 535MB or roughly 140MB less than the package launched in Europe last week did. Therefore the Galaxy Note 10 camera features like AR Doodle, Night mode for selfies, and/or Live focus video mode may or may have not all been included in the package. The October 2019 security patch, on the other hand, began rolling out on Galaxy devices roughly a month ago. It fixes 17 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposure (SVE) items along with other Android OS security issues.

You can grab the latest update for the Galaxy Fold in the US by opening the Settings app on the device, accessing Software update, and tapping Download and install. Feel free to leave a comment below if you’ve received the update stateside and you’ve noticed any other changes or new camera features pulled from the Note 10 series.

Galaxy S11 could be powered by Exynos 9830 SoC, hints One UI 2.0 beta

The Exynos 990 SoC might not end up powering the upcoming Galaxy S11 series. The flagship could employ the unannounced Exynos 9830 chipset instead. This is according to the latest One UI 2.0 beta release for the Galaxy S10 series. As passed along by @MaxWinebach via Twitter, the latest beta release mentions support for both the Exynos 9830 and the Snapdragon 865 chipsets, neither of which are official.

Galaxy S11 to be powered by Exynos 9830 or 990

Technically speaking, the Exynos 990 introduced by Samsung last week seems like the perfect fit for an upcoming flagship phone. It not only promises noticeable performance and power efficiency gains but also offers support for 120Hz displays and LPDDR5 memory.

Regardless of the chipset’s prowess, it looks like Samsung is still working on the Exynos 9830, or what could be the true successor to the ongoing Exynos 9825 silicon that beats at the heart of the Galaxy Note 10 lineup. Once again, the Galaxy S11 series is expected to adopt one of Qualcomm’s chipset solutions in some markets, i.e., the so-called Snapdragon 865.

It’s too early to confirm which Exynos silicon the Galaxy S11 will employ in other regions. The Exynos 9830 may have been mentioned in the latest One UI 2.0 beta, but as we’ve exclusively reported a few months ago, the Galaxy S11 lineup is expected to ship with One UI 2.1. If this will be the case, would support for the Exynos 9830 even be needed in One UI 2.0?

This sort of leaves us with two possibilities. On one hand, Samsung may have added support for the Exynos 9830 and Snapdragon 865 chipsets in One UI 2.0 beta preemptively, because the Galaxy S11 could be planned to enter the testing stages running One UI 2.0 (even though it will ship with One UI 2.1). On the other hand, Samsung could plan on using these unannounced chipsets for another upcoming high-end smartphone running One UI 2.0 out of the box. Time will tell how the situation evolves. We’ll keep you up to speed as we learn more.

Samsung Electronics was South Korea’s biggest R&D spender in 2018

South Korea’s largest companies have invested more money into R&D throughout 2018 compared to previous years. The figure is roughly 49.7 trillion won ($42.5 billion) combined, reveals a recent report by The Korea Herald citing the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology. More to the point at hand, out of all the South Korean companies that have contributed to this figure, it turns out that Samsung Electronics is the biggest spender.

Samsung Electronics was 2018’s biggest R&D spender in South Korea

The top eight largest South Korean companies have reportedly spent 30 trillion won ($25.6 billion) on R&D combined, out of the total of 49.7 trillion ($42.5 billion) invested throughout 2018 by no less than 1,000 Korean companies. Samsung Electronics’ $14.2 billion R&D investment overshadowed all of its peers and competitors last year, including Samsung’s own Display division, as well as LG Electronics, LG Display, and LG Chem. Its R&D budget even surpassed companies from other industries, including Kia Motors and Hyundai Motors.

Samsung Electronics has a lot of spending avenues across different industries, and it is the largest smartphone maker in the world, after all. Last year the company was reportedly interested in forming an R&D division for its foundry business, and half a year ago Samsung revealed its plans to invest $115 billion in logic chip development by 2030.

The tech giant continued to pour money into R&D in 2019 as well. It spent a record $8.4 billion on R&D in the first six months of the year alone. Assuming that the trend continues in the second half of 2019 then the company will likely remain Korea’s top R&D spender this year as well.

Samsung Space Selfie campaign concludes early but we get one selfie up

Samsung’s Space Selfie campaign came to an end just a little bit earlier than planned as the company decided to bring the high-altitude balloon back to Earth ahead of schedule. According to a spokesperson cited by The Independent, the balloon’s planned descent to Earth had already begun when unfavorable weather conditions forced Samsung to prematurely soft-land the unmanned vehicle in a selected rural area.

The Space Selfie balloon landed on Saturday morning on a field in Merrill, Michigan. It didn’t damage any properties or cause any injuries, and Samsung apologized for any inconvenience the minor incident may have created.

Samsung Space Selfie balloon returns safely to Earth

The idea behind the Space Selfie campaign was simple: send a selfie, group photo, or pet photo to Samsung and you’ll get a chance for the image to be sent into the Earth’s stratosphere along with a Galaxy S10 5G. The photo would then be recaptured on camera with planet Earth serving as the background. The promotional video below explains it all.

The campaign kicked off last week and the sign-up period was supposed to end on October 31. Evidently, with the high-altitude balloon having landed earlier than planned, the sign-up period concluded earlier as well.

Nevertheless, some Galaxy fans and celebrities got the chance to send their selfies into the Earth’s stratosphere. Our forum moderator, Henk, was one of the lucky winners to have received his Space Selfie before the vehicle was brought back down to Earth ahead of schedule. Check it out! Samsung even included a few details on temperature, heading, and the exact time when the Space Selfie was captured.

Did you get the chance to send your selfie into the stratosphere, or were you leaving it for the last minute and this earlier-than-planned landing has made impossible for you to participate? Have you received your Space Selfie or are you still waiting for it to land in your inbox? Join us in the comment section below.

Samsung releases November security patch for the Galaxy S10 5G

Samsung kickstarted the rollout of the November 2019 security patch before the end of October beginning with the Galaxy Tab S4 a couple of days back. It is, however, not the only Galaxy device to receive the latest patch as the Korean company is rolling out the same update to its flagship Galaxy S10 5G as well.

The update is currently out only in Nordic countries and carries the software version G977BXXU2ASJ5 there. Considering the Galaxy S10 5G is available in select markets, you can expect the rollout to be completed soon. Also, since the device shares many similarities with other S10 models, the same update for other variants should arrive soon.

Neither Google nor Samsung has released any information about what’s included in the November 2019 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) so far. Given that Samsung is already beta testing Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on the Galaxy S10 lineup, it’s doubtful the latest patch brings any new features.

It is worth pointing out the Galaxy devices are receiving the November security update even before the same is available for Google’s Pixel devices. It serves as an example that while Samsung may not be the quickest to roll out Android version updates, it does a much better than most other OEMs when it comes to monthly security updates.

If the update for the Galaxy S10 5G is available in your region, you should receive an OTA notification automatically. You can also manually check for the update by opening Settings and tapping the Download updates manually option under the Software Update menu. Alternatively, you can also download the latest firmware from our database and manually flash it if you are impatient to wait.

Samsung suppliers worry about losing business to Chinese ODMs

A few of Samsung’s component suppliers from South Korea are reportedly beginning to worry for their future as Samsung’s plans for outsourcing the production of some of its smartphones to Chinese ODMs could put a dent into their revenues.

According to The Korea Times citing market analyst Kim Joon-hwan, local component suppliers could lose 3.4 trillion Won ($2.9 billion) if Samsung goes with its alleged plan to outsource the production of more than 60 million Galaxy M (2020) and Galaxy A (2020) smartphones next year.

Chinese ODMs pose a threat to Samsung’s local part suppliers

This year Samsung launched a couple of ODM smartphone models that were manufactured in China without much of Samsung’s input, expertise, and supply channels. A few months ago the company was said to plan shipping between 30 to 40 million ODM phones by the end of 2019, and now fresh reports suggest that Samsung aims to ship 60-70 million ODM devices in 2020.

These smartphone models bearing the Samsung brand will be manufactured by Chinese ODMs using their own resources and suppliers while loosely following Samsung’s design guidelines. Samsung won’t have to put in much effort to ready these devices for the market, and so far the business practice seems to be working in Samsung’s favor as the lower production costs give the company a better fighting chance against its budget competitors from China.

The problem is that South Korean component suppliers are not in the same boat as Samsung. While the tech giant seems to benefit from its ODM partnerships, its domestic part suppliers are going to lose business to Chinese ODMs.

The ODM strategy is limited to low and mid-range devices at the moment, but part suppliers from South Korea are now worrying that outsourcing high-end and premium flagships to Chinese ODMs might become just as profitable for Samsung in the future. This could result in even lower profits for domestic businesses.

Local part suppliers are reportedly taking measures to try and mitigate potential losses. An association of Samsung partners has apparently been formed to try and address these problems. Some of these businesses even got in touch with Chinese ODMs to try and become their direct component supply channels.

All in all, we don’t think Samsung will allow its flagship phones to be manufactured by Chinese ODMs anytime soon, but things could change. It’s quite evident that the company does intend on releasing more budget-friendly ODM devices next year. Only time will tell how this business strategy will affect Samsung’s relationships with local component suppliers and who will come out on top at the end of it all.

One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note 10 is rolling out for good now

Samsung is once again rolling out the One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. The beta program was finally opened up to the devices last week. We were even able to get the beta on one of our devices in Germany.

However, the beta had actually been sent out by mistake. Samsung halted the rollout and we were told that it would be released next week. The company has stuck to its word and released the beta for the Galaxy Note 10 on the very first day of the week.

Samsung finally releases One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy Note 10

Samsung launched the One UI 2.0 beta a couple of weeks ago. The Galaxy S10 series was the first to get it. Samsung has released the beta firmware for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ in over half a dozen markets across the globe.

It had made no secret of the fact that the program would be opened up to the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ as well. It was only a matter of waiting for that to happen. The beta briefly became available this past Friday but the rollout was quickly halted. We did manage to get it on a device in Germany but many of our readers reported that they couldn’t make it past the registration stage.

We were later told that the beta had been sent out by mistake, not unlike what happened with the UK beta release for the Galaxy S10 a few days back. The company seems to have taken care of whatever caused it to pull the release last week.

There have been multiple confirmations from users in Germany that the One UI 2.0 beta for Galaxy Note 10 is now rolling out in the country. It’s the same firmware version that brings One UI 2.0, Android 10 and the November 2019 security patch. It’s only a matter of time now before the Galaxy Note 10 series gets the beta in other supported markets as well.

Samsung releases Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta in China

We reported a couple of weeks ago that Samsung will soon be expanding the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta to a few other markets. The beta is already out in South Korea, the United States, Germany, India and elsewhere.

China was on the list of markets where Samsung was going to release the beta. That’s precisely what the company has done today. It’s rolling out the Android 10 beta firmware for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ in the People’s Republic.

Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta is being rolled out in China

China is one of the few markets where Samsung releases the Snapdragon-powered variants of its flagship smartphones. The Galaxy S10 series runs on the Snapdragon 855 processor down there. Samsung is now rolling out the One UI 2.0 beta for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 and the Galaxy S10+ in China. It’s rolling out firmware version G97*0ZCU2ZSJI for the devices.

The beta firmware brings Android 10 to these devices along with One UI 2.0. The latest version of Samsung’s custom skin for Android comes with several new features and improvements. You can find out more about all that’s new by following our One UI 2.0 feature focus series.

The Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ have been included in the beta program as well. It goes without saying that the phablets will eventually receive the beta firmware in China as well. Samsung isn’t quite done with releasing the firmware for them in other markets right now.

November 2019 security patch rolling out for the Galaxy Tab S4

It’s not unusual for Samsung to release an upcoming security patch for a device even before the relevant month rolls around. It’s the Galaxy Tab S4’s turn this time around to receive such an update. The November 2019 security patch has been released for the tablet in several markets across Europe.

The update has been released for the Wi-Fi variant of the tablet so far. As one would expect from a security maintenance release, the update primarily brings fixes for vulnerabilities discovered in Android and Samsung’s custom software. The September 2019 security patch was released for the device a little over a month ago.

Galaxy Tab S4 gets November 2019 security patch

The details of the November 2019 security patch are not available at this point in time. Google hasn’t posted the latest Android Security Bulletin. Samsung hasn’t detailed the patch yet as well since it does that after the bulletin gets posted.

We’ve seen this happen for many devices in the past as well. It’s not unusual to see a security patch being rolled out ahead of time. Samsung has released this update, firmware version T830XXU4BSJ2 in markets across Europe. They include Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, Hungary, Switzerland, Spain, Netherlands and Nordic countries. The firmware is readily available for download from our database.

November is just around the corner anyway. It’s not going to be long before the details of this security maintenance release are made public.

Galaxy S10 (Pie) update brings front camera slow motion mode and more

The Galaxy S10 series is receiving a new software update in some countries today, and it brings a couple of new features. These features include the ability to take slow motion videos with the front camera, a function called Auto Hotspot that lets you share your phone’s internet connection with other devices logged into the same Samsung account, and Intelligent Wi-Fi 1.5. The update also adds Media and Devices buttons to the notification shade to allow users to control external devices (such as TVs and Bluetooth devices) from a central location.

Samsung keeps introducing new features for with every other Galaxy S10 update

It continues to impress us how Samsung has been pushing out updates packed with new features – some of which debuted on the Galaxy Note 10/10+ – to the Galaxy S10 lineup. The last major Galaxy S10 update, for example, brought multiple Galaxy Note 10 camera features, and now, the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ are receiving new functionality that we thought was supposed to be introduced with the Android 10/One UI 2.0 update – such as slow motion recording with the front camera. This is the kind of after-sales support people expect when they buy a flagship smartphone, and the Korean giant seems determined to deliver.

We’ll have to take a deeper look at some of the new features, like Auto Hotspot and Intelligent Wi-Fi 1.5, to see what they do (Intelligent Wi-Fi is an award-winning collection of Wi-Fi functions that are already present on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10). In the meantime, if you’re in Switzerland or Germany, you can download the latest update over the air from the Settings » Software update menu on your phone. The update, which bundles the October security patch, should roll out in other countries in the coming days, and we’ll be sure to let you know once that happens.
