Leaked images reportedly show refurbished Galaxy Note 7 with 3,200 mAh battery

We brought you one of the first solid pieces of information that suggested that Samsung is working on a refurbished Galaxy Note 7, and the company recently made it official that it would be doing its best to salvage usable components from the Note 7 and possibly launching a refurbished version depending on market viability. Today, pictures of what is supposedly the refurbished Note 7 have been leaked.

The handset in the images is running Android 7.0 Nougat and carries model number SM-N935, just like we said it would. The battery capacity is also listed as 3,200 mAh on the device; it had been rumored earlier that the refurbished Note 7 would feature a smaller battery than the original, and it certainly looks like that will be the case. Whether the reduced battery size will hold up well in real-life usage remains to be seen, and there’s even the question of whether the refurbished unit will actually go on sale.

The original rumor had suggested that the refurbished model would launch in India and Vietnam, and though a Samsung India employee had rubbished the rumor, the fact that today’s leaked pictures come from the SamsungVN website (a Vietnamese fansite not officially related to Samsung) suggest that it could go on sale in the latter. It wouldn’t be surprising, either, as Samsung currently assembles its smartphones in Vietnam, so relaunching the Note 7 in that market would be considerably easier than in other markets.

Again, there’s no telling if and where Samsung will get the necessary government permissions for selling the refurbished Galaxy Note 7. We’re just hoping that its availability isn’t restricted to only a few markets as there are likely a lot of folks who would put down their hard earned money to get their hands on the Note 7. It’s odd how the Note 7 suddenly looks so boring and generic in design now that the Infinity Display-toting Galaxy S8 is here, but it certainly still holds the crown for offering the most productivity on a Samsung phone (not counting the new DeX station for the S8).

Samsung posts first official Galaxy S8 TVC on YouTube

Since launching the Galaxy S8 officially, Samsung has posted its official introduction and hands-on videos online. Now that it has started taking pre-orders for its new flagship smartphone and will be releasing it in a couple of weeks, it’s time for the company to start its advertisement blitz.

Samsung today posted the first official Galaxy S8 TV commercial on YouTube. If you watched the Galaxy S8 announcement live stream on March 29 then you might remember this as the ad was played during the presentation.

It basically shows us how the display has been broken out of its shell by the Galaxy S8 which features an impressive dual edge curved panel that Samsung calls Infinity Display. The handset is near bezel-less with the display stretching even further up the top and bottom for an impressive screen-to-body ratio.

The display is certainly one of the major unique selling points of the Galaxy S8 so it’s not surprising to see Samsung highlight it in the first official TVC for its new flagship. The Galaxy S8 is going to be released on April 21.

Samsung Game Tuner updated with new features and Galaxy S8 support

It has been a year since Samsung launched the Game Tuner app which allows users to scale a game’s native resolution and even set its frame rate. The app is meant for mobile gaming enthusiasts so that they can tweak the experience as per their liking. They will be able to use the app to downscale the resolution or the frame rate in order to reduce the impact on the GPU which will subsequently help conserve battery life as well.

Samsung has now released a new update for the Game Tuner app which comes with a couple of new features as well as support for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The updated Game Tuner app lets users set the resolution ratio to 5 percent and also to further save battery with the Flip-over Screen-off feature. It’s also possible to set a custom thermal limit-level now.

Aside from these new features, the app comes with a new design and bug fixes. It’s live now and available as a free download from the Google Play Store.

Samsung is being very generous to Galaxy S8 pre-order customers in Malaysia

Samsung started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in select markets last week. As expected, it’s offering incentives to customers who get their pre-orders in before the handset is actually released later this month. Incentives vary by market and include the likes of a free Gear VR with Controller and a Bluetooth speaker.

However, it appears that Samsung is being quite generous to Galaxy S8 pre-order customers in Malaysia. The company is offering customers in Malaysia $200 worth of free stuff with every pre-order. They will receive a starter kit that contains a Clear Cover, screen protector, a USB Type-C cable and a stand. Customers get a 5,100mAh power bank as well as an extended warranty and 1-year screen crack protection.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ can be pre-ordered in Malaysia until April 13 for RM3299 or $747 and RM3699 or $834. The handset will be released in the country on May 5 while pre-order customers will receive it a day before the retail release.

Samsung heir was mostly quiet during his first court appearance in the corruption trial

Samsung Electronics vice chairman and the conglomerate’s heir apparent Lee Jae-yong has been behind bars for a couple of months now after he was arrested on charges of bribery, corruption, embezzlement and others. Today was his first appearance in court as the trial has now begun. Reports from the courtroom reveal that he was mostly quiet throughout the hearing today and his laywers did all of the talking.

Aside from confirming his personal details like his name and occupation, Lee remained silent when he was asked by the judge if he wanted to say anything in response to the charges he’s fighting. He’s being accused of paying bribes to South Korea’s impeached President Park Geun-hye through her close friend Choi Soon-sil.

Lee’s lawyer told the court that he didn’t even know that some financial contributions had been made because that wasn’t part of his job. His legal team also told the court that whatever payments that were made by Lee were in response to the requests made by President Park and that he didn’t seek any favors from her in return.

However, the special prosecution doesn’t feel the same way. “We have secured enough evidence proving that defendant Lee Jae-yong made improper requests to the president,” said Park Young-soo, who is the special prosecutor.

It’s going to be a while before the result of this trial comes out but it goes without saying that it’s going to have a deep impact on South Korea and if everything goes south, for Lee Jae-yong personally. He stands to face more than 20 years in jail if convicted on all charges.

Samsung gives up on digital cameras

Samsung has long been a player in the digital camera market but the company appears to have stopped production and sales of these products. The digital camera market itself is declining given that almost everyone prefers smartphone cameras for informal photography and smartphone cameras continue to get better with each generation.

It has been a while since Samsung last launched a new digital camera, the last time it did that was with the NX500 mirrorless camera that came out in March 2015.

An unnamed Samsung official revealed to a local news outlet in South Korea that Samsung is no longer producing and selling digital cameras but also pointed out that it will create a new camera product category to continue the business.

The new category is expected to include cameras for smartphones and other mobile devices. The Gear 360 camera is an example of one such product. It has already launched a new model of its virtual reality camera and it goes without saying that the company will continue to improve this product over the coming years.

Galaxy S8 pre-orders are now live in South Korea

Samsung has already started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and in other markets across the globe and it’s now doing the same in its home country of South Korea. Customers in the country can start placing their pre-orders for the new flagship from today. Samsung has also confirmed the pricing details.

The 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 can be pre-ordered for 935,000 won or $826 but mobile carriers are providing discounts which bring the price down a bit. The discounts are said to be of the same value that was applied to the Galaxy S7 last year. All pre-order customers will receive a Bluetooth speaker worth 99,000 won as a gift.

Samsung has previously confirmed that it’s going to release the Galaxy S8 on April 21, however, according to reports it’s looking to ship the units to pre-order customers by April 18. It’s accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 until April 17.

Samsung is also going to sell the much-rumored 6GB Galaxy S8+ in South Korea. It can be pre-ordered until April 17 as well. Available only in Midnight Black, this variant features 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It’s priced at 1,155,000 won or $1,032.

Samsung expects to post second-best operating profit ever in the first quarter of 2017

Samsung officially released its Q1 2017 earnings guidance today and it’s in line with market expectations. Analysts are of the view that Samsung’s operating profit this quarter will be close to the record high it hit back in the third quarter of 2013. The company predicts that its Q1 2017 revenue is going to be 50 trillion won or $44 billion with the operating profit coming out to be around 9.9 trillion won or $8.7 billion.

This is going to be the highest Q1 profit ever for Samsung and the second-best overall since that record was set back in Q3 2013. This figure also represents a 50 percent increase year-over-year compared to the first quarter of 2016.

Samsung’s display and semiconductor divisions are believed to be the primary drivers of this performance. The handset division was without a new flagship to sell for the past two quarters ever since the Galaxy Note 7 was discontinued.

The company is actually expected to beat its all-time high operating profit record in the second quarter this year and the Galaxy S8 may play a significant role in that.
