Galaxy S20 will get these bug fixes with next major software update

Samsung went all out this year with the Galaxy S20 series, equipping the phones with the best hardware, be it the screen, camera, processor, connectivity, or the battery. However, not everything is performing as well as it should, and some reviewers have been complaining of autofocus issues and battery management. The company will reportedly fix these issues with the next major software update.

Max Weinbach, who has been pretty accurate with Galaxy S20 series leaks in the past, has mentioned it on Twitter that the Galaxy S20 phones will get multiple bug fixes with a software update. Some people were experiencing overheating during wireless charging. The camera app was freezing on some units, and the Wi-Fi performance was unstable. Even the battery management wasn’t as good as it should be.

With the next major software update for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra, Samsung will reportedly fix all these issues. However, we still don’t have a timeline for the rollout of the said software update. The autofocus related issue on the Galaxy S20 Ultra was meant to be fixed with the software update that was rolled out recently.

If you are a Galaxy S20 user, have you been facing problems related to battery life, camera app freezing, heat management during wireless charging, and unstable Wi-Fi? Let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung starts mass production of 512GB eUFS 3.1 storage chips

Samsung, the world leader in memory and storage technologies, is frequently the first brand to release chips based on newer technologies. It was among the first brands to make UFS 2.0, UFS 2.1, and UFS 3.0 based storage chips. Now, the company has announced that it has started mass producing 512GB storage chips that are based on the new, eUFS 3.1 standard.

These 512GB eUFS 3.1 chips are already being used in the Galaxy S20 smartphone lineup, and we can expect them to show up in high-end smartphones from other brands. These eUFS 3.1 storage chips can reach sequential read and write speeds of up to 2100MB/s and 1200MB/s, respectively. The sequential write speed is now three times more than it was on eUFS 3.0 chips.

Random read and write IOPS have seen improvements as well, at 100,000 IOPS and 70,000 IOPS, respectively. Samsung says that these chips could be used to save 8K videos recorded on modern flagship smartphones without any buffering. Around 100GB of data can be transferred from old phones to eUFS 3.1 storage equipped phones within 1.5 minutes.

Cheol Choi, Executive Vice President of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics, said, “With our introduction of the fastest mobile storage, smartphone users will no longer have to worry about the bottleneck they face with conventional storage cards. The new eUFS 3.1 reflects our continuing commitment to supporting the rapidly increasing demands from global smartphone makers this year.

Samsung will offer eUFS 3.1 storage chips in 128GB and 256GB capacities as well. The South Korean chip giant started the mass production of fifth-generation V-NAND storage chips at its X2 line in Xi’an, China. The company is also planning to shift its P1 line in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, from mass-producing fifth-generation chips to sixth-generation chips to keep up with the demand.

Rumor: Samsung developing new 150MP Nonacell sensor for Q4 2019

Samsung may be developing a new 150-megapixel sensor for flagship phones, according to a fresh rumor passed along via Twitter. It claims that the sensor has a footprint of around 1 inch and that it uses the same Nonacell technology that was employed by the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor.

The rumor further suggests that Xiaomi will be the first third-party company to utilize the 150MP shooter in one of its flagship phones scheduled to be unveiled in Q4 2020. Other companies including Oppo and Vivo will supposedly employ the module in the first quarter of 2021. They’ll pair the sensor with the unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 chipset which will presumably beat at the heart of their premium models.

Nonacell is seemingly reviving the race for more pixels

Now, since the sensor is said to rely on Nonacell technology, it should combine nine pixels into one to achieve higher light absorption. And because the sensor is said to have a resolution of 150-megapixels, the final shots should technically have a pixel count of around 16MP, as opposed to the ISOCELL Bright HM1 sensor which delivers 12MP shots.

It’s interesting to see how this camera technology is giving Samsung a real incentive to aim for a higher pixel count for its sensors. For the most part, the race for more pixels had slowly died off in recent years, but the introduction of Nonacell is seemingly reviving that philosophy, even though it may be doing so for different technical reasons.

Samsung could be creating this sensor specifically for its clients in China; in other words, there’s no way to be certain that the Korean giant will use the same exact sensor in one of its future flagship phones such as the Galaxy Note 20 or Galaxy S21. But a variation of it, at least, is likely to be developed for Samsung’s own purposes.

Galaxy S10, A20, A30 help Samsung to secure a podium finish in Japan

Samsung Electronics is back on the podium in Japan after it managed to outperform Sony in terms of smartphone market share and climb up the ranks to secure third place in 2019. Samsung’s market share last year stood at 8.0%, up from 7.4% a year before, according to iNews24 citing market research firm IDC.

Meanwhile, Sony lost the third spot to Samsung and fell to fifth place, while Apple (1st) and Sharp (2nd) continue to outperform the Korean tech giant with a market share of 46.2% and 13.6%, respectively.

Samsung maintains shipment figures despite Japan’s market shrinking

Although Samsung was able to increase its market share in Japan, it didn’t ship more smartphones in 2019 compared to a year before. The company shipped similar figures, but it still performed very well given that the overall Japanese smartphone market has decreased throughout the year.

In contrast, while Samsung maintained its shipment figures, Apple, Sharp, and Sony have shipped ‘significantly’ fewer smartphones in Japan compared to 2018.

The Galaxy S10, A20, and A30 were the driving force behind Samsung’s success

The Galaxy S10 series was one of the reasons why Samsung found success in Japan last year, according to the new report. And it’s not all that surprising given that Samsung topped a six-year high market share in Japan more than two quarters ago thanks largely to the success of the S10 in the country.

As for the low/mid-range market, the report states that the Galaxy A20 and Galaxy A30 were the most sought-after smartphones in Japan throughout 2019.

Exclusive: Galaxy M01 in development with 32GB storage, Qualcomm SoC

We have exclusive news on a brand new budget Galaxy M smartphone that’s currently in development, called the Galaxy M01. Essentially, it’s the ‘M’ equivalent of to the Galaxy A01, and we have it on good authority that it’s being developed for India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Russia.

Our sources have also revealed that the Galaxy M01 base model will have 32GB of storage, which will presumably be expandable via microSD. In markets where the device will go on sale, buyers will be able to choose between three color options including black, blue, and red.

The Galaxy M01 will be powered by a Qualcomm SoC

For the time being, we don’t have any specific details on the chipset, but it will be made by Qualcomm, according to a Geekbench entry from earlier today. The smartphone has model number SM-M015G in the benchmark database and it’s being referred to as having a ‘QC_Reference_Phone’ motherboard, proving that the device is deep in development.

However, it’s unclear exactly what Qualcomm chipset the Galaxy M01 will have. The benchmark claims that the silicon has a total of eight ARM CPU cores with a base frequency of 2.02GHz, but it doesn’t explain if those eight cores are identical or if they follow a heterogeneous architecture. Either way, keep in mind that synthetic benchmark scores are not very revealing at this point in the phone’s development.

The same benchmark also reveals that the Galaxy M01 has 3GB of RAM and runs Android 10. No outdated firmware for this little bad boy, figuratively speaking. We don’t have any details on the size of the screen, but it will likely hover around the 6.4-inch mark given its DNA, i.e., the Galaxy M10 and M10s.

This is all the information we have about the Galaxy M01 for the time being, but stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated as soon as we find out more.

March 2020 security update out now for Galaxy Note 8 and S8 series

Samsung’s flurry of security updates continues as the March 2020 security patch is now rolling out to two more smartphone models, the Galaxy S8 series and the Galaxy Note 8. Unsurprising given the age of these models, the update doesn’t add any new software features but ensures that the security of these devices remains up to the current standards.

After the Galaxy S9 and Note 9, the Galaxy Z Flip, and numerous other mid-range and ex-flagship devices, Samsung is now rolling out the March 2020 security patch for the Galaxy S8 and Note 8 in countless regions. As usual, the update addresses various security issues found in both Android OS and Samsung’s own software, and you can read more about them in our monthly report.

In regions where the firmware is presently available, eligible smartphone owners should be greeted by an update notification, but they can always access the Settings app, go to Software update, and tap Download and install to try to trigger the update process if the notification is running late. Another method to obtain the update is to simply visit our firmware archive for the Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8, download the firmware for your specific model and region, and install it on your phone using a Windows PC.

Samsung employees told to work from home due to coronavirus concerns

As coronavirus cases continue to rise across the globe, countries are implementing stringent measures in a bid to contain the virus. It has already caused significant disruption in global business and trade, with companies having to shut down offices and cancel public events.

It was impossible for a company with the kind of global footprint that Samsung has to not be affected by the outbreak. Following multiple confirmed coronavirus cases that led to the shut down of its smartphone factory in Gumi, South Korea, the company has now told employees to work from home “where possible.”

Samsung ramps up its response to the coronavirus pandemic

Samsung has escalated its response to the pandemic, sending a company-wide memo in which it “strongly advised” employees to work from home, reports Bloomberg News. The memo also details how Samsung is preventing the possibility of the virus being spread with minimal disruption to its business.

It has implemented mandatory health screening at the entrance to its facilities, limited international travel of employees to only “mission-critical journeys,” and has also established task forces across the globe which will follow and implement the latest advice from experts. Samsung has also sent care packages to some of its employees who are working from home or are in self-quarantine.

Samsung’s advice to work from home “where possible” applies to employees across its 52 global sales offices, 15 regional regional offices and several design, research and development centers. The company employees over 300,000 people across the globe. It won’t be possible for employees involved in its manufacturing operations to work from home, though, since they need to be physically present at the factories. The prevention steps that Samsung has highlighted in its memo will help address their concerns as the company doubles down on the disinfection of its facilities and mandatory health screenings.

Samsung Foundry, the company’s semiconductor manufacturing division, today announced that it’s postponing its annual foundry forum due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, Samsung is going ahead with its annual shareholders’ meeting despite concerns.

Does the Galaxy S20 come with a screen protector? Yes it does!

Screen protectors are normally one of the first accessories that people purchase when they pick up a new smartphone. With premium smartphones becoming more expensive than ever before, it’s always a good idea to spend a bit of extra money for added protection of the display, since display replacements tend to be very costly.

With Samsung’s new flagships hitting the market, many have been wondering if the Galaxy S20 comes with a screen protector. Samsung started shipping premium devices with protectors pre-installed last year and that policy has not been changed for the new lineup.

Galaxy S20 series comes with a screen protector pre-installed

Yes, the Galaxy S20 does come with the screen protector. All three models in the lineup – the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Utra – have a screen protector installed right out of the box. It’s basically a thin sheet of plastic so it’s not that obvious.

This causes some customers to believe that there’s no protector on the screen at all. If you turn off the display and examine it under lights at an angle, you can easily make out the edges of the protector, particularly around the corners of the display and the Infinity-O punch hole.

Samsung would often pre-install protectors on mid-range and entry-level devices before but that wasn’t the case with flagships. We saw that change last year with the introduction of the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy S10 lineup. It came with a protector installed, with the exception of the Galaxy S10e, which didn’t have a fingerprint sensor embedded in the display.

Some third-party screen protectors don’t function properly with in-display fingerprint sensors. So it’s better for Samsung to provide a basic protector out of the box instead of having customers go through the hassle of finding the right one. It starting shipping flagships with a pre-installed protector with the Galaxy Note 10 series last year.

This is now the case for the Galaxy S20 series as well. Regardless of where in the world you buy your Galaxy S20 handset from, it’s going to have a screen protector on it. While it doesn’t offer the same kind of protection that you can get from a tempered glass protector, it does a great job of shielding your display from dings and scratches. After six months, the protector on my Galaxy Note 10+ is visibly scratched, which just shows that it has done its job well. So you can expect the one on your Galaxy S20 to hold up nicely too.

Galaxy A40 Android 10 update reportedly starts rolling out

Samsung is on a roll with Android 10 updates over the past three months. It has released the One UI 2.0 update to a bunch of smartphones in the Galaxy M series, Galaxy A series, Galaxy S series, and the Galaxy Note series. Today, the company has reportedly rolled out the Android 10 update to the Galaxy A40 in Italy.

The Android 10 update, with firmware version A405FNXXU3BTB8 and file size of 1698.94MB, brings One UI 2.0 to the Galaxy A40. It also comes with the March 2020 Android security patch. It is being reported that the update is only available on Vodafone’s network as of now. We had reported three months ago that Samsung had started Android 10 development for the Galaxy A40 and the Galaxy A50.

The update brings the usual bells and whistles that we’ve seen with One UI 2.0 on other Samsung smartphones in the past. There’s a new Dark Mode with darkened wallpapers and text. There are new UI navigation gestures, smoother animations, new emojis, a refreshed UI and tweaked icons, a more refined permissions manager, Digital Wellbeing, and more.

If you are a Galaxy A40 user in Italy, you can check for the Android 10 OTA (over the air) software update for your smartphone by heading to Settings » Software Update and then tapping Download and install. Since this is a major update, we recommend backing up important data on your phone and using a Wi-Fi network to download the update.
