Samsung chief says Galaxy Note 7 is going to have upgraded ‘note’ features

It was rumored a few weeks ago that Samsung is likely going to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 at an event in New York City on August 2nd and the company confirmed just that a few hours ago. We’re all very excited to see what the company has in store for us. Samsung Electronics president and mobile chief Dongjin Koh has said that the Galaxy Note 7 is going to bring upgraded “note” features.

Speaking to reporters in Seoul, Koh said: “We have improved ‘note’ functions this time, upgrading software for user convenience.” This means that the flagship is going to have new software features and the S Pen is likely going to learn some new tricks as well. Koh will take the stage on August 2nd to unveil the Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung Pay consumer satisfaction is higher than Apple Pay

Samsung Pay and Apple Pay have been around for a year and both compete with each other in the United States. Samsung’s mobile payment service fares better because it can work with conventional credit card machines as well while Apple Pay can not. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why the Auriemma Consulting Group finds in its research that Samsung Pay consumer satisfaction is higher than Apple Pay.

The research was conducted using Mobile Pay Tracker which analyzed more than 2,000 customers in the United States. The research found that 92 percent of Samsung Pay users were satisfied with the payment service as opposed to 84 percent with Apple Pay. Apple Pay users were found to spend an average of $75 per week while Samsung Pay users spend around $82 per week on average. “Samsung Pay outscores Apple Pay on a number of metrics,” noted Marianne Berry, ACG’s Payment Insights’ managing director, adding that “Some of this may be due to its newness, with most Samsung users reporting three months of experience compared to a year for Apple Pay.” Looks like all of the promotions Samsung is running to get new people on Samsung Pay are paying off.

Make three purchases using Samsung Pay to receive a free $10 Amazon gift card

Samsung has kicked off a nifty promotion for all new and existing users of its mobile payment platform, Samsung Pay, in the United States where it’s offering a free $10 Amazon gift card to customers who make three qualifying purchases between today and August 1. That’s all there is to it. No catches. You can even make the payments in the same day, so if you head to Starbucks in the morning, McDonalds at lunchtime and Wendy’s in the evening, you’ll have the $10 card in no time!

It’s worth noting, however, that you will need a Galaxy S6Galaxy S6 edgeGalaxy S6 edge+Galaxy S6 ActiveGalaxy S7Galaxy S7 edgeGalaxy S7 Active or Galaxy Note 5 to take advantage of this offer. If you’re a new customer and haven’t configured Samsung Pay yet, you’re in luck as it’s an extremely easy process. All you have to do is open the application on your handset, then follow the step-by-step guide to registering your credit/debit card. Once that’s done, you’re good to go.

Samsung to announce the withdrawal of $6.60 million investment proposal in Saemangeum

According to a new report published by daily newspaper The Seoul Shinmun, Samsung is preparing to announce the official withdrawal of its $6.60 million investment proposal in Saemangeum. Back in 2011, Samsung signed a memorandum of understanding pledging to invest the aforementioned sum in the development of a new renewable energy industrial complex, which was scheduled to start being constructed in 2021.

However, the South Korean company has since sold off its wind power generation and solar power battery businesses following a major internal restructure, so it’s believed that it sees no reason to go ahead with the investment plan as it will no longer have a use for the facilities. A Samsung executive was caught speaking out on the matter, when he said: “In the longer term, if we have a big investment plan, we could consider Saemangeum first. But for now, we see no reason to do so.”

Samsung Galaxy Note7 launch event scheduled for August 2

The fact that the next Note flagship will be known as the Galaxy Note7 has been one of the worst-kept secrets by Samsung. In order to diffuse any further speculation about the release and the naming convention, the company has now scheduled an Unpacked event on August 2, which will officially mark the arrival of the handset. The event will be held at New York City, while there will be satellite events taking place in London and Rio de Janeiro respectively. It was speculated last month that the Galaxy Note7 will be revealed sometime around August 2, so there’s very little surprise in this regard.

While announcing the launch event, Samsung also explained the reasoning behind jumping from Note 5 to Note7. As predicted, the company wants to keep the Note flagship in line with the S series flagship. This is a logical move and could help avoid some confusion among fans and customers.

Here’s what the company had to say on the matter:

First and foremost though, you might be curious as to why it’s called Galaxy Note7 instead of Galaxy Note6. There are a couple reasons why. First, the Galaxy Note7 will complement our Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and unify our product portfolio. Second, the Galaxy Note7 will minimize confusion about the latest mobile technology from Samsung, and provide full alignment with Galaxy S smartphone.”

The Galaxy Note7 is rumored to be packing a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display. While renders have suggested that it might feature a curved edge screen like the Galaxy S7 edge, Samsung is yet to confirm this. Further, the flagship could be sporting 4GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, a 12-megapixel camera on the back and a massive 4,000 mAh battery. We also expect there to be a slew of S Pen related features bundled with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Updated Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 may soon be available from T-Mobile

Samsung quietly updated the Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 and Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 about three months ago. The updated tablets have the same name and design but do come with new software and improved performance. T-Mobile is already selling the original Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 and it appears that the carrier is gearing up to launch the updated model as well.

A Samsung device bearing model number SM-T818T has recently received Bluetooth certification, the second “T” denotes that this device is headed to T-Mobile in the United States. The unlocked version of this tablet bears model number SM-T819. The updated Galaxy Tab S2 runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and features a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, microSD card support, fingerprint sensor as well as an 8 megapixel rear and 2.1 megapixel front camera. The tablet’s 9.7-inch Super AMOLED display has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. It’s unclear when T-Mobile is going to officially announce the launch of this tablet on its network.

Samsung Pay has been launched in Puerto Rico

Samsung has announced that Samsung Pay has been launched in Puerto Rico today. It supports eligible credit cards from Banco Popular which is Puerto Rico’s largest bank. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Claro users will be able to use Samsung Pay with their Banco Popular cards. It goes without saying that Samsung Pay will get support for more financial institutions in Puerto Rico in the coming months.

Customers in Puerto Rico will be able to pay almost everywhere they can pay by card with Samsung Pay due to the fact that it has support for both NFC and MST. This enables merchants to accept Samsung Pay with their existing credit card machines so they don’t have to spend money on expensive mobile payment terminals. Samsung Pay’s Puerto Rico launch follows its recent launches in Spain, Singapore, and Australia. Samsung patents a color splitter to improve low light camera performance

Samsung has patented new technology that could go a long way in improving a camera’s low light performance. The idea is to improve color reproduction and reduce noise by adding a color splitter to improve the sensitivity of the image sensor. Conventional digital sensors make use of colored filters to transmit wavelengths that develop color inside an image, the patent says that this results in a significant loss of light energy because the filters only absorb light in all but one wavelength.

The patent details that by splitting the light into two separate beams that loss of light can be prevented as the sensor is not immediately hit with all wavelengths. This would help with color reproduction as the light will be separated into red and blue sub-pixels and the reds, greens, and blues of RGB will be treated separately. This could bring about a major improvement in camera performance as the color splitter will help the image sensor perform better in dim environments and reduce noise at higher ISOs. Samsung has only patented this technology right now and it’s unclear when it will make its way to the company’s smartphones and cameras. It could be a while before that happens.

Samsung engineers don’t seem to do real world testing of their budget phones

I wrote yesterday about how Samsung needs to stop making smartphones with 8GB of internal storage, and I’m back again today to complain about another annoyance in the company’s budget smartphones. We have often spoken about how the lack of an ambient light sensor/auto brightness on Samsung’s cheap phones is inexcusable. A light sensor is missing on the Galaxy J2 (2016) as well, and I’ve come to realize it might be partially because Samsung engineers don’t actually use the budget phones they make as their primary smartphone before the devices hit the market and get into the hands of consumers.

At the Galaxy J2 (2016) launch, a lot of folks pointed out to Samsung’s product head for the device that the company needs to start putting in an ambient light sensor on its devices no matter what the price point. To which they got the reply that these phones do provide an Outdoor mode for better screen legibility outdoors. If the people who developed the Galaxy J2 (2016) or any other affordable Samsung phone had actually used them as a primary device for testing, they would have realized that an outdoor screen mode is nowhere near as important as a screen that can automatically adjust its brightness levels.

For all the time I’ve been using the J2 (2016), my first order of business after picking up the phone as I wake up in the morning is blindly reaching out for the brightness slider in the status bar to make the screen readable. Why? Because at night I set the brightness levels all the way down to minimum so that my eyes don’t hurt when I’m using the phone in bed. If Samsung’s R&D folks used these phones like regular consumers, well, we wouldn’t have a slew of cheap Samsung phones without an ambient light sensor.

With the Galaxy J2 (2016), Samsung says they want websites and blogs to focus on what the company is offering to consumers instead of what is missing on the device. That’s well and good, especially with features like that Smart Glow notification ring, but how long will users have to do without basic features? Every few months Chinese manufacturers put in more and more features into their devices while keeping the low price points. Meanwhile, Samsung’s affordable phones come with screens that need to have their brightness manually adjusted, internal storage so high you can’t really install any apps, and underpowered processors that no one should be using in this day and age.

The worst of it is that Samsung seems to be extremely out of touch with what a smartphone user actually needs. Smart Glow, for example, is a nice feature for a low-cost phone but is useless for anyone who doesn’t keep their phone upside down (which is probably a majority of smartphone users). The lack of support for adoptable storage is another example of how the company isn’t looking at what someone with a limited budget would need on his/her smartphone.

I wouldn’t usually spend time writing on these things, but with the onslaught of affordable Samsung devices in the last month or so, they are becoming harder to ignore. One can only hope the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer will one day test its affordable handsets out in the real world and start making changes as necessary. It’s become increasingly difficult to not tell people that they are better off opting for a phone from a Chinese OEM, and Samsung is simply banking on its brand recognition to cater to the affordable smartphone segment at this point.

Secret Cinema’s Awakenings 2016 set captured in virtual reality

Jeroen Verheij, who has been a Dutch techno pioneer for over two decades, is commonly known on the circuit by his alias Secret Cinema. His set at the Awakenings Festival 2016 has been captured in virtual reality by Samsung, he was the only artist at this festival to get his set recorded in 360-degree virtual reality. A small snippet of this VR set has been published online by Samsung.

Secret Cinema was joined on stage by Egbert as he made the crowd move to his set. That was the first time that has performance was recorded in VR and he’s now excited to do this more often because he really sees a future for VR. A small portion of the VR set has been posted below and it can be viewed either as a 360-degree video on the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S7 or in virtual reality with the Gear VR. MSC Cruises teams up with Samsung to create plans for a ‘next-generation smart ship’

MSC Cruises has today announced that it has teamed up with Samsung to develop plans for a “next-generation smart ship.” The MSC Seaview will feature the same traditional exterior appearance as a cruise liner, but its interior will be decked out with a whole host of NFC-dependent technology that has been designed to improve the holiday experience for guests.

When boarding, guests will be awarded a unique identification number, which can be stored on either an NFC-enabled card, bracelet or smartphone, then while navigating around the ship they will be able to: geo-locate themselves or their children, access their cabin without the need to carry an additional keycard and make payments while on-board.

It has also been revealed that hundreds of beacons will be strategically placed in key areas of the ship. They will send customized, location-based notifications to guests smartphones as they stroll the decks. These alerts will not only consist of important information, such as event timings for the day, but unmissable deals available in on-board stores, too.

That’s all the information MSC Cruises has provided on the MSC Seaview now, other than that it is due to take service starting June 2018. However, we have a sneaky suspicion that we’ll be hearing a lot more about the ship over the course of the next two years.

Orange launches the Gear S2 Classic 3G in France

Mobile operator Orange has teamed up with International digital security firm Gemalto to launch the 3G variant of the Gear S2 Classic in France. The smartwatch is available to purchase for €349.99 outright, but a programmable eSIM is required to take advantage of its cellular capabilities, which enable users to place/accept calls, send/receive messages and respond to notifications when the device isn’t paired to a smartphone.

Orange is second carrier operating in Europe to introduce compatibility for the revolutionary GSMA-compliant eSIM, with the first being O2 over in the UK. It’s currently unclear if it will be charging customers any additional usage fees to switch over to the SIM, but we suspect there will be a small monthly charge in place that can be halted at any time — so they’re not locked into a contract and are free to cancel immediately should they stop using the watch.

Samsung share price surging to new record high

Samsung Electronics has struggled over the past couple of years and that was reflected in investor sentiment who just weren’t paying top dollar for the company’s stock. The company has been working hard to turn things around and the Galaxy S7 has made a significant contribution to those efforts, so much so that the company will post its best quarterly results in quite some time. This has renewed investor confidence in the company which is why Samsung’s share price is now rallying towards a new record.

Samsung’s share price hit the very important 1.5 million won ($1,303) psychological mark yesterday for the first time since March 2015. It ended up closing 2 percent higher at 1,489,000 won which is the highest close since April 10 last year. Samsung’s shares have been rallying since the company released its Q2 earnings guidance last week with 8.1 trillion won in operating profit for the previous quarter. Shares normally fall after a company releases better than expected earnings as investors lock in their profits but they remained bullish on Samsung Electronics, pushing the company’s stock towards a new record high. The market now waits to see if investors are willing to take the stock to new heights, the highest it has ever been was 1,576,000 won back on January 2, 2013.

Galaxy Note 7 leaked photos surface online again

Just yesterday we picked up on what might have been the first live photo of the Galaxy Note 7 and now more photos of the handset have been leaked online. It not that different from what we’ve already seen and is in line with what we’ve seen in the leaked renders of this handset. We’re likely to see more of these leaked photos as the official announcement nears.

As expected, the Galaxy Note 7 in these photos appears to have a 5.7-inch display with dual-edge curves which is a first for any Galaxy Note handset. New modules on the top of the front panel suggest that it may very well come with an iris scanner which will be the first for any Samsung smartphone. Do bear in mind that this could be a prototype which means the final version might have some slight differences but it’s more or less going to look the same. How the device feels in the hand can only be ascertained once we get our hands on it and that could happen soon given that Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2.

Samsung’s NAND flash memory sales hit an all-time high this year

A new report by market research firm IHS reveals that Samsung saw its NAND flash memory sales hit an all-time high during the January-March period in 2016. It brought in $2.62 billion in revenue in the first quarter which is a 3.1 percent increase from the fourth quarter last year. That brings up the company’s market share in the global NAND flash memory arena to 42.6 percent while Toshiba, the second largest NAND flash manufacturer in the world, stands at 28 percent.

Samsung has been a dominant force in the NAND flash memory market since 2002 and it was the first company to mass produce 3D NAND flash memory in 2013. It’s NAND flash memory products are preferred by its clients but that doesn’t mean its rivals aren’t trying to catch up. Intel, Micron and IBM are working on advanced memory chips that are faster than NAND while Western Digital and Toshiba will join forces to create new manufacturing facilities for 3D NAND chips.
