Samsung to share results of the Galaxy Note 7 investigation later this month

Samsung has been looking into the cause of the Galaxy Note 7 fires for a few months now. It launched a proper investigation into the matter after deciding to discontinue the device when it became evident that merely switching battery suppliers was not going to be enough to stop the handset from catching fire unexpectedly. According to a new report out of South Korea, Samsung has ended its Galaxy Note 7 investigation and that it’s going to make the findings public later this month.

“The task of finding the cause of the explosion has been completed recently,” said a Samsung Electronics official mentioned in the JoongAng Ilbo report, adding that the “relevant departments have begun preparations to release the results later this month.” The official didn’t say anything about the cause of the explosions since apparently only a few people in the company are aware of the true cause.

Samsung has previously promised to make the findings of its Galaxy Note 7 investigation public so that the company’s fans and customers can also know where it went wrong with what might have been its most successful handset.

Samsung Galaxy A (2017) series goes official: IP68, 16 MP front cameras, USB Type-C, and more

We’ve been hearing about these devices for quite a long time and now Samsung has finally made them official. The company says that the new Galaxy A (2017) series is stylish, powerful and practical with features that will make users’ everyday lives a bit more easier. Samsung will be launching the 4.3-inch Galaxy A3 and the 5.2-inch Galaxy A5 (2017) in Europe, in Black Sky, Gold Sand, Blue Mist and Peach Cloud color options.

The new Galaxy A (2017) series handsets have a metal frame and 3D glass back that clearly takes inspiration from the design of Samsung’s more premium offerings like the Galaxy S7. This is combined with a sleek camera and home button to provide a seamless form factor that’s comfortable to hold and use. For the first time, the Galaxy A series now offers IP68 water and dust resistance as well. Additional features include a USB Type-C port, Fast Charging, and Always on Display.

Samsung has significantly improved the imaging capabilities of the new handsets, including putting a 16-megapixel sensor on the front. A floating shutter lets users easily take a selfie by tapping anywhere on the screen and they can also use the display as a front flash for bright pictures. The camera UX has been simplified to allow users to quickly change modes and instantly add filters.

The Galaxy A5 (2017) features a 5.2-inch full HD Super AMOLED display with a 1.9GHz octa-core processor under the hood. The handset has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, a 16-megapixel front and rear camera, 3,000mAh battery with Fast Charging support and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The Galaxy A7 (2017) will feature similar specs as the A5 (2017), except for a larger battery (3,600 mAh) and a bigger display (5.7 inches). The Galaxy A3 (2017) has a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, a 13-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera, a 2,350mAh battery, and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The new Galaxy A lineup will go on sale in Europe in early February, while a few Asian markets will be seeing a launch sometime in late January. The Galaxy A3 (2017) and Galaxy A5 (2017) cost 329 euro and 429 euro respectively. As confirmed by a leak, Samsung Malaysia will be taking pre-orders starting January 6th, and details on availability in other markets and the handsets’ official pricing should soon be revealed.

Samsung likely to bring Chromecast-like media streaming functionality to its smart TVs

Samsung has updated its Smart View app for iOS devices ahead of CES 2017, and the app will likely bring a Chromecast or AirPlay-like functionality to its Smart TVs shortly. The app has been offering a way to beam photos, videos, and music stored locally on smartphones to compatible TVs for quite some time now. However, version 2.0 of the app brings a major UI redesign and some new features.

As per the screenshots, the new version of the Smart View app now shows content from a variety of streaming content providers such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, YouTube, and others. Users can utilize the new app to beam streaming content to their compatible TV sets, offering a Chromecast-like functionality. There appears to be a universal search feature where users can search for popular content.

Samsung acquired Boxee in 2013 to completely revamp software on its smart TVs as it wanted to move away from apps to a more natural UI by merging electronic program guide and streaming content. However, the project was killed, and most of the employees were laid off. Now, it appears that some of the ideas managed to survive and are now being used by the company.
