Galaxy S21 Ultra gets Pro Mode support for telephoto cameras via Expert RAW app

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is arguably the best smartphone camera of 2021, and it even trumps the iPhone 13 Pro Max in most cases, thanks to its flexible camera setup. However, the stock camera app only supports the primary and ultrawide cameras in the Pro mode. Today, Samsung has announced Pro Mode support for the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s telephoto cameras, but with a separate app.

The South Korean firm has released the Expert RAW camera app on the Galaxy Store in South Korea. This new app allows Galaxy S21 Ultra’s primary, ultrawide, 3x telephoto, and 10x telephoto cameras to be used in Pro mode. You can adjust the exposure value (EV), focus, ISO, shutter speed, and white balance while shooting images and videos. Contrast, highlights, shadows, saturation, and tint can also be adjusted, similar to the Pro mode in the stock camera app. You can even view the histogram to check if specific areas in the frame are overexposed or underexposed.

The Expert RAW camera app also supports HDR and can save images in Lossless JPEG and 16-bit Linear DNG RAW formats. You can directly open DNG RAW files in the Adobe Lightroom app (via a dedicated button on the image viewer screen) to edit them as per your liking. The app can capture images with lower noise, increased sharpness, greater details, and a wider dynamic range.

Samsung has mentioned that the Expert RAW app can only be used on the Galaxy S21 Ultra running Android 12-based One UI 4.0. The app is currently in beta, and Samsung says that it will soon launch a stable version. It will also be released to the Galaxy S21+ and the Galaxy Tab S5e. We also hope that the app’s compatibility will be expanded to other high-end smartphones in Samsung’s lineup.

Samsung doesn’t need to worry since Apple has given up on innovation

Samsung and Apple are the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers. Both are in an envious position. Samsung ships the most units while Apple’s margins on its smartphones are the best in the business. They’re so far ahead of the pack that catching them has been difficult.

Both also compete with each other in the premium segment. Apple doesn’t make mid-range and low-end devices so it doesn’t compete with Samsung there. The company’s iPhones do compete with the flagship series that Samsung launches every year.

Even as Samsung pushed the envelope on its flagship Galaxy S series every year, Apple has been taking a different approach with its iPhones. Every new model seems to be an exercise in refinement. Apple isn’t making any major new changes. Perhaps it has truly subscribed to the idea that you don’t need to fix something that’s not broken.

It’s true that Apple tends to take its time before it adopts new technologies. We saw how it waited to launch a 5G iPhone when most Android manufacturers were already on their second iterations. That’s also true for other improvements such as OLED panels for its iPhones. The company still hasn’t made an OLED iPad while Samsung has too many OLED-touting tablets to count.

Samsung also has an entirely new product line that Apple has no answer to. No iPhone can hold a candle to the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip series. Samsung has singlehandedly brought the foldable form factor to the mainstream. This year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 have proved to the world that foldable smartphones can be durable and that they’re more than capable of being your daily driver.

The Korean conglomerate has been fearlessly innovative in its pursuit to make foldable smartphones the norm. Its subsidiaries have achieved great advancement in display and battery technology to make foldable phones a reality. Samsung’s engineering and design teams have knocked it out of the park, especially with the latest models.

Truth be told, it often feels that Samsung is the only company that really cares about innovation in the smartphone market anymore. All other phones are either too similar or follow the same blueprint. There’s nothing “new” or exciting anymore. While Apple has delivered plenty of new innovations with iPhones in the past, it no longer seems to care about that.

If it weren’t for the changes made to the camera housing, all iPhones going back the past few years look quite similar. You can even buy third-party conversion kits to transform an iPhone 7 through iPhone 11 Max to an iPhone 12. At least Samsung has been quite bold when it comes to the design even for its Galaxy S series.

Apple’s lack of interest in innovation might also have to do with the shift in its business model that has been implemented over the past few years. It’s a fact that the high-end smartphone market is stagnating. Margins are getting slimmer and the competition continues to increase.

That’s why Apple has been increasingly relying on services to boost its revenues and profits. It offers users a variety of services such as the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Care, Apple TV+, Apple Fitness+, Apple Arcade and Apple Pay.

Its revenues from services continue to grow. In the third fiscal quarter of 2021 alone, Apple raked in $17.5 billion from its services, a 33% surge compared to the same period last year. The company now has over 700 million paid subscriptions.

The way Apple has built out its entire ecosystem has contributed to this surge in services revenue. This essentially acts as insulation for its device business. Even if it doesn’t push the bar or make any major innovations, customers who are tied to its ecosystem has little incentive to leave.

Samsung doesn’t have this services empire and competing with Apple on this front will be difficult. The fact that Samsung doesn’t own the underlying OS on its smartphones is also a factor.

Besides, Samsung is on a mission to revolutionize the smartphone market once again. It was monumental in pushing the industry to adopt larger display sizes. With foldable smartphones, Samsung is blazing a trail once again that will change the smartphone market as we know it.

There have been rumblings that perhaps Apple might consider a foldable smartphone of its own. No evidence has emerged as yet to substantiate those rumors. The company has previously shown that if it doesn’t believe in something, it won’t do what everyone else is doing.

Apple is making money hand over fist. Its customers are happy and its shareholders are very happy. Does it really need to upset the apple cart, pun intended, just so it could go back to its innovative ways? Right now it seems that the company doesn’t think this is necessary.

So Samsung may very well have nothing to worry about, at least as far as Apple is concerned, Apple fans might wish that their favorite company comes out with a response to Samsung’s foldables. They would want to see it be innovative. Ultimately, it’s a business decision, and it seems like Apple can’t be bothered enough about it right now.

Samsung is now offering the T7 Touch Portable SSD at a discount through Amazon in several markets. In the USA, customers can save up to 21% on the T7 Touch Portable SSD, while in Germany, Amazon is shaving a whopping 43% off the price of the 1TB model.

Customers in the USA can now buy the 500GB Samsung T7 Touch for only $89.99 instead of $109. The 1TB and 2TB models cost $149 and $299, respectively, down from $189 and $369.

The same Samsung T7 Touch SSD with 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage is now available for €89, €124, and €229, respectively. Similarly, Amazon UK is dropping the prices for the 500GB and 1TB models to £74 and £103.

The Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD is one of the most secure consumer external SSDs on the market. It’s shock-resistant to the point where it can withstand drops from ~6 feet (~2 meters), and data is secured with a fingerprint scanner, hence the moniker “T7 Touch”. Samsung is also selling a standard T7 without a fingerprint scanner.

The T7 Touch Portable SSD can top read speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000MB/s. It offers AES 256-bit hardware encryption and it’s compatible with a wide variety of devices and operating system. It’s available in two color options — black and silver. Samsung inaugurates its first premium sales space in Germany

Samsung announced the opening of its first premium store in Germany this week. The company’s new concept area is located in the KaDeWe department store in Berlin and promises to offer a unique shopping experience for a wide range of Samsung products categories.

The concept store has an area of 100 square meters, so it’s large enough to host demonstrations for products ranging from foldable phones to large home appliances and the company’s new microLED and Neo QLED 8K TVs. Of course, the retail space is set up in such a way that allows visitors to experience Samsung’s rich and interconnected product ecosystem. Most products are networked inside the store to allow visitors to experience Samsung’s IoT platform — SmartThings — in real-time, control devices remotely, and so on.

The Samsung saga continues

Samsung’s been launching new and redesigning existing Experience Stores for the past few months. The company relaunched its store in London to set a new benchmark a couple of months ago. Since then, Samsung launched new stores in Spain and Belgium and redesigned two existing retail spaces in Canada to reflect the modern era.

It does seem like Samsung is now focusing on enhancing its offline retail experience more than before. As it should, given that one of its biggest rivals — Xiaomi — said on record that it plans to establish an expansive network of 30,000 offline stores by 2024.

Galaxy Tab S8, Watch 5, Buds Live 2 production roadmap leaks, and more

Samsung’s alleged 2022 product manufacturing schedule for a handful of unreleased tablets, laptops, and wearables has leaked. According to this roadmap, Samsung has four Galaxy Tab S8 tablet models queued up for production, along with two lower-cost tablets, three laptop models, the Galaxy Watch 5, the Galaxy Buds Live 2, and the Buds Pro 2.

The Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S8+, and Tab S8 Ultra will reportedly enter mass production beginning with the first quarter of 2022. The Galaxy Tab S8 Lite, however, won’t hit the conveyor belts earlier than Q3 2022.

Samsung also appears to plan on manufacturing new Galaxy Tab A7 Lite and Tab A8 models for 2022, all throughout the year. As for laptops, the company seemingly wants to manufacture a new generation of Galaxy Book Pro and Pro 360 laptops beginning Q2.

Samsung to launch Galaxy Watch 5 and two earbud models next year

Assuming that the leaked roadmap is accurate (via The Elec / @FrontTron), Samsung wants to push the sequel to the Galaxy Watch 4 series, i.e., the Galaxy Watch 5, into mass production starting with the third quarter of 2022. There’s no mention of the Galaxy Watch 5 Classic or other models, but it’s fair to say that the roadmap is incomplete relative to Samsung’s entire product portfolio for 2022. There’s no mention of future foldable phones, for example, or other relevant Galaxy A devices.

The upcoming Galaxy Watch 5 could be accompanied by two pairs of wireless earbuds next year. The so-called Galaxy Buds Pro 2 should enter production in Q2, and Samsung reportedly plans to manufacture a sequel to the Galaxy Buds Live from Q3 onwards. If true, this means Samsung wants to continue developing and exploring both the conventional and the unconventional wireless earbud form factors concomitantly.

As for production figures, Samsung’s apparently planning to manufacture 33.6 million Galaxy tablets, 7.4 million Galaxy Book and Chromebook Go laptops, 19 million Galaxy Watch 5 units, and 23 million pairs of Buds Pro 2 and Buds Live 2 earbuds. Now, of course, this roadmap is not official, and even if it’s accurate, production schedules are subject to change, especially in this semiconductor shortage climate. Take it with a proverbial pinch of salt and all that.

New Galaxy Note 20 One UI 4.0 beta update for the UK fixes 120Hz bug

The Galaxy Note 20 series is getting another One UI 4.0 beta update in the UK. The Android 12 beta program kicked off for the S Pen flagship a couple of weeks ago, and the latest update fixes a handful of issues, including a bug related to the display’s adaptive refresh rate. The December 2021 security patch, which Samsung hasn’t detailed yet, accompanies the new firmware.

The changelog for the latest Galaxy Note 20 One UI 4.0 beta build mentions fixes related to Quick Share icons, the Clear View Display Cover, and the 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. We are aware of the screen refresh rate issues experienced by Galaxy S21 customers in the United States following the live One UI 4.0 update, although we haven’t heard similar stories from Galaxy Note 20 One UI 4.0 beta testers in the UK. It’s unclear if these 120Hz issues are related, but regardless, Samsung’s already addressing them for Galaxy Note 20 beta builds, and will release a fix for the Galaxy S21 soon.

New Galaxy Note 20 One UI 4.0 beta improves the frame rate

In addition to these fixes, the update should improve search results in messaging apps and claims to increase the phone’s overall performance with a smoother framerate. For reference, the latest One UI 4.0 beta update for the Galaxy Note 20 in the UK has firmware version “ZUKA.”

Check our Android 12 and One UI 4.0 hands-on video below for a closer look at the new update. We showcase it on the Galaxy S21 series, but it should be virtually identical to One UI 4.0 for the Galaxy Note 20 lineup once Samsung releases it to the public. And if you’re tempted to buy a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra — perhaps following the realization that there’s no new Galaxy Note flagship coming this year — then you might want to check our long-term review.

Thanks for the tip, Jim!

Deezer announces official app for Samsung Smart TVs

Although Deezer isn’t nearly as much a household name such as Spotify/Apple Music, the music streaming service has carved a niche for itself in the market. Back in 2018, Deezer’s lossless audio library was available for Samsung audio products. Now, there’s a dedicated Deezer app for Samsung Smart TVs.

A new blog post on Deezer’s official website has announced that the app will be available for Samsung Smart TV owners in over 120 countries. It includes all the features found on its mobile versions, such as curated mixes, suggestions and a customizable library. The app can also display lyrics on-screen in real-time.

Additionally, users with a Deezer Hi-Fi subscription can use their Samsung Smart TVs to listen to high-fidelity FLAC music. There’s a dedicated podcast category as well, which is divided into sub-genres to make finding content easier. Deezer has also made it easier for new users to sign up directly via their TVs.

Deezer is currently available in these countries. If yours isn’t on the list, chances are, you might not be able to install the Deezer app on your Samsung Smart TV and will have to wait for the service to be available in your region.

Qualcomm and Microsoft exclusivity deal ending soon, will open opportunities for Samsung

It was reported a few months ago that Samsung is working on more powerful Exynos processors for laptops and Chromebooks. While Chromebooks use a variety of ARM-based processors from multiple chipset vendors, ARM-based Windows laptops only feature Qualcomm chipsets, and there could be a reason for that.

According to a report from XDA DevelopersMicrosoft and Qualcomm had an exclusive deal that only allowed Qualcomm chipsets to run Windows on ARM. Apparently, that was because the two companies invested in making Windows on ARM possible. That exclusive deal is reportedly “set to expire soon,” and there could be an opportunity for other chipset manufacturers to enter the Windows on ARM segment.

MediaTek recently expressed interest in the Windows laptops segment but made it clear that they don’t have any immediate plans. Once Qualcomm’s exclusive deal ends, Samsung could use the opportunity to make higher-end Exynos chipsets for Windows laptops. Probably, it could even make its own Galaxy Book-series laptop with an Exynos processor, complete with 5G cellular connectivity.

After Apple launched MacBooks powered by M1 series ARM processors, consumers have had a lot of interest in ARM-powered laptops. Tests have shown that Apple’s M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max processors offer faster performance and higher power efficiency than most other x86/x64 laptop processors. Qualcomm is expected to launch similar ARM-based processors (with the Nuvia acquisition) sometime next year.

Why Android 12 is extra special for Samsung Galaxy smartphones

The release of a major new version of Android is an exciting occasion for many of us. It’s a yearly event that we all look forward to, as it breathes new life into our smartphones and brings with it many new features and improvements.

Android 12 is no different, but did you know that this year’s big Android release is extra special for users of Samsung Galaxy devices? It certainly is: This is the first time any of Samsung’s Galaxy phones or tablets will be receiving a third major OS upgrade.

Samsung announced last year that it would start providing three years of OS upgrades to all of its flagships and some of its mid-range smartphones. The new software update policy didn’t just apply to devices set to launch after the policy’s announcement, though. Samsung also included 2019 devices like the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Fold, and the Galaxy A51 in the list.

And Android 12 is when we will see the policy go into full effect: The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 lineups will be the first ever from Samsung to get a third major Android OS upgrade. And the update may not be far, either. Both devices (or at least their 5G variants) have already been spotted running Android 12, and Samsung is targeting a January rollout in many markets.

Whether or not Samsung manages to stick to its schedule notwithstanding, the point is that we will finally see Samsung’s industry-defining update promise in action with Android 12, and that’s got us excited. Here’s hoping we see Samsung give four major OS upgrades to some of its devices in the future, though, because the competition is slowly but surely catching up.

Your Samsung smartphone could soon display iMessage reactions properly

Despite being a feature-rich messaging app, Samsung Messages is no longer the default SMS app for many newly-released Galaxy smartphones (running One UI 3.1 or newer out of the box). Instead, these devices come with Google Messages as their default SMS client. The app is now finally getting a useful feature that isn’t available on Samsung Messages yet.

The folks over at 9t05Google have discovered that the latest beta version of Google Messages can properly display iMessage reactions when conversing with iPhone users. It shows the respective emojis towards the corner of the message, similar to how it appears on the Messages app on an iPhone. Earlier, these reactions would appear in the form of a text message saying “Liked [Your Message]” or “Laughed at [Your Message].

Since Apple’s iMessages are nothing but SMS messages with additional information, Google Message is able to finally translate that extra information into proper emojis. So, once you get this feature on your Samsung smartphone sometime in the future, you can chat with your friends who have an iPhone without the chat thread containing additional texts for iMessage reactions.

This feature was leaked a few days ago, and Google has now started rolling it out to some beta users. Have you received this update yet? Let us know in the comments section below.

Latest Galaxy Z Flip 3, Z Fold 3 One UI 4.0 beta update includes December 2021 security patch

Two days ago, Samsung released the third beta version of One UI 4.0 to the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The update fixed multiple bugs, including the one that caused the screen to stutter and the one that caused brightness issues. It has now been revealed that the update also includes the latest security patch.

The latest One UI 4.0 beta build, which comes with a firmware version ending ZUKG, brings along the December 2021 security patch. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 running One UI 4.0 Beta are the first smartphones to receive the December 2021 security update. Samsung hasn’t revealed which vulnerabilities it has fixed with the new security patch, but we expect that to be revealed in the first half of next month.

The Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update brings a revamped UI design, smoother animations and transitions, Material You-inspired Color Palette feature, and improved privacy and security. The update also includes new widget styles, additional widgets, and a new widget picker UI. Samsung has also improved all of its stock apps, including Samsung Internet and Samsung Keyboard.

The stable version of One UI 4.0 has already been released to the Galaxy S21 series in various markets, and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 could get a stable update sometime next month.
