Galaxy Note 20 gets third One UI 4.0 beta update in the US, South Korea

Samsung had released the first One UI 4.0 beta update to the Galaxy Note 20 series three weeks ago. Last week, the company had released the second beta version of the update in the US. The South Korean firm has released the third One UI 4.0 beta update in its home country and the US today.

The latest One UI 4.0 beta update for the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra comes with the firmware version ending ZUL1. It fixes various bugs, including the one that disabled fingerprint authentication in some apps. The update also fixes bugs related to quick setting toggles, screen brightness while rebooting the device, battery drain, lockscreen, and crashes on the Galaxy Watch 4.

Samsung could release a couple of more One UI 4.0 beta updates to the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra before releasing the stable version of the software sometime in January 2022. The South Korean firm has also released One UI 4.0 beta updates to the Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Z Fold 3.

More high-end and mid-range Galaxy smartphones and tablets are expected to get the stable Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update early next year.

You can now watch TikToks on Samsung TVs in North America

The short-form video app TikTok has seen explosive growth over the past couple of years. The app actually claims to have over a billion users every month. That may very well be true since everyone and their dog seems to be using it now.

If you’ve ever wished for it to be possible to watch TikToks on TV, then your wish has finally come true. An official TikTok app has been released in North America for many smart TV platforms and Samsung TVs are on the list as well.

Did you know you can watch Tiktoks on your Samsung smart TV?

The TikTok TV app has been released for a variety of smart TV platforms. The app is also available for Samsung smart TVs in North America. It was initially released last year exclusively in a couple of markets.

The China-based company says that the decision behind launching a TV app was to provide families with a communal way of watching all of the great content on the app. As the holiday season brings families together and with TikTok no doubt being the social media platform to be on this year, the app has certainly been launched at the right time.

Users can log into their accounts on the TikTok TV app and watch content from their For You page and Following list. They can also use the Discover feature to find new content creators and browse additional categories on TikTok.

Samsung smart TV owners in North America can get the app right away on their televisions. The TikTok app was previously released for the company’s smart TVs in the United Kingdom and Europe last year.

New Android features let you get the most out of your Galaxy phone

Our Samsung Galaxy phones are an integral part of our lives. So it’s always good to get new features that help us get the most out of them. With the holiday season upon us, Google has now come out with some new Android features to make its mobile OS more helpful.

The holiday season is the busiest time of the year. As you’d expect, a lot of people rely on their mobile devices to stay in touch with their loved ones and keep track of their precious moments.

Google releases new Android features for the holidays

Take the Family Bell feature, for example, It lets you set custom bells that announce upcoming activities to the entire family. So if you want everyone to be there when the Christmas tree lights up, just schedule a Family Bell.

Google has also added three new widgets. The new Google Play Books widget makes it easier to keep track of holiday reasons. The new YouTube Music widget puts recently played tracks and playback controls on the home screen. Lastly, the new Google Photos People & Pets widget puts your closest people and your pets on the home screen.

New Memories in Google Photos are also being rolled out this week to celebrate highlights from the past. These Moments will be displayed in the photo grid and feature curated collections from holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Eve to milestones like birthdays. Memories can be personalized and renamed directly from the grid.

Google has made some changes to Android Auto as well since a lot of people will be driving home for the holidays. Android Auto will now launch automatically when the device is connected to a compatible car.

It will stay connected on every drive. Android Auto will soon get the smart reply option as well so that it’s easier for users to reply to text messages through Google Assistant. It will soon also be possible to use voice search for music in media apps on Android Auto.

In 2022, Samsung’s foldables will be water-resistant, but not its tablets

Water resistance is a feature that doesn’t make the headlines often enough. Yet the two big players in the mobile field, Samsung and Apple, make it a point to include water and dust resistance in all their flagship phones, and some other manufacturers do so, as well.

Samsung, of course, has been doing it a lot longer than many of the competition. Since 2016, all Galaxy flagships have featured IP68 certification, which makes them fully dust resistant and capable of surviving for up to 30 minutes in 1.5 meters of water and basically brush off random liquid spills or a trip in the rain (unless it’s a heavy downpour, in which case you shouldn’t really be using any phone, water resistant or not).

This year, Samsung even managed to make its foldable phones water resistant, which is a feat that impressed all of us here at SamMobile. But it’s also made us even more aware of the fact that half a decade since Samsung made water and dust resistance a standard feature on its flagships, the company still doesn’t have a tablet that sports an IP rating.

And it won’t have one next year, either: The Galaxy Tab S8 lineup will have plenty of exciting features, but an IP rating will not be one of them. None of the rumors have mentioned it, and our sources have also confirmed that water/dust resistance will not be available on the Galaxy Tab S8, S8+, or S8 Ultra. That means we can assume that another year will go by without Samsung adding elemental protection to its tablets.

There are plenty of situations where water resistance on a tablet would be handy. The most obvious one is when you’re taking a long, hot bath and using your tablet in there. Many people use their tablets in the kitchen to follow recipes or just pass the time as they cook or do the dishes. If you let your kids use your tablet, you are probably well aware how water resistance would be incredibly useful – heck, even many of us adults are guilty of spilling a drink on our tablet or laptop at some point in life!

There have been water resistant tablets on the market before. Sony made some, and it would be really awesome if Samsung could take a cue from the Japanese manufacturer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like 2022 will bring good news on this front, but maybe 2023 will? Guess we’ll wait and see.

Exclusive: Galaxy A33 will be water and dust resistant with an IP67 rating

Water and dust resistance has been a feature on Samsung’s flagship phones for a long time. Back in 2017, Samsung also brought water and dust resistance to its mid-range A series, but that was short-lived and we didn’t see any mid-range phones from the Korean giant with an IP rating all the way until this year.

We’re talking about the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72: Both phones feature an IP67 rating that sets them apart from the competition in the heavily congested mid-range segment. And rumor has it that next year, Samsung will be bringing water and dust resistance further down the ladder in the A series, a rumor that we can now confirm.

Galaxy A33 will handle the rain like a champ

According to our sources, the Galaxy A33 will be water and dust resistant. It will be IP67 certified like the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72, which means it will be able to survive submersion in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes and will be completely protected from dust. IP67 isn’t as good as the IP68 rating on Samsung’s flagships on paper, but practically, it’s all anyone needs.

Of course, whether or not an IP rating is something people will want over a headphone jack remains to be seen. Yes, the A33 is expected to lack a 3.5mm port, which could disappoint many potential buyers. Unfortunately, it seems the headphone jack will go missing on a lot of mid-range Galaxy phones next year, so the Galaxy A33 won’t stand alone in this regard.

BREAKING: Galaxy Note 10 series gets One UI 4.0 beta in South Korea!

Late last year, Samsung announced that several Galaxy A, Galaxy S and Galaxy Note devices would be eligible for a third major Android update. The company has held up its end of the bargain and has begun recruiting testers for the Galaxy Note 10 series’ One UI 4.0 beta program in South Korea.

As expected, both the vanilla Galaxy Note 10 and the larger Galaxy Note 10+ are eligible to participate in the beta. Users simply need to head over to the Samsung Members app and sign up for the program, following which they will be able to download the Android 12-based One UI 4.0 update over the air from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu.

It is far too early to speculate what One UI 4.0 features will make it to the Galaxy Note 10 series. We see no reason for Samsung to skimp on any One UI 4.0 features for the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+, as both phones are still competent in the current year. We did a deep dive into how the base Galaxy Note 10 holds up two years after launch and it passed with flying colors.

With the Galaxy S20 series supposedly a few days away from receiving the One UI 4.0 update in South Korea, it makes chronological sense for Samsung to focus on the next big devices that came before it. Open betas usually span between 4-6 weeks, so we can expect a stable One UI 4.0 build to hit the airwaves sometime in early January, in some markets, at least. A global rollout should ideally commence by February, at the latest.

Everything we know so far about the Galaxy S22 flagship lineup

The Galaxy S22 flagship series won’t be unveiled exactly one year after the Galaxy S21 lineup’s debut. According to the latest, the upcoming Samsung flagship trio will be announced in February and released later the same month.

Nothing has been officially confirmed thus far, but rumors keep coming in, and although some were proven wrong, others will very likely be proven right in a few months from now. So, without further ado, below you will find everything that was rumored, and everything we know — or think we know — about the Galaxy S22 series. Keep in mind that the list is not final and will be updated as more details surface.

Galaxy S22 series display specs

Earlier rumors indicate that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ will have slightly smaller displays than the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+, respectively. The same rumors suggest that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will retain a 6.8-inch display diagonal and be the only model from the trio to benefit from an LTPO backplane.

The Galaxy S22 display should measure 6.06-to-6.1 inches, while the Galaxy S22+ is said to have a panel that measures anywhere between 6.5 and 6.6 inches. Resolution and refresh rate details are unknown, but it’s almost a given that all three flagship models will boast 120Hz refresh rate capabilities.

Galaxy S22 series camera specs

The Galaxy S22 series might be Samsung’s first to adopt sensor-shift camera technology similar to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This technology stabilizes the camera’s sensor instead of the lens, which leads to improved image quality and better stabilization.

In addition to this, the Galaxy S22 could be the company’s first flagship series to feature cameras that were developed with the help of Japanese optics manufacturer Olympus, though the exact purpose of this alleged collaboration — if it exists in the firs place — is unclear.

Other reports suggest that the Galaxy S22 series won’t be equipped with a ToF sensor, as Samsung believes that this technology doesn’t have enough use cases yet. Furthermore, UDC (Under-Display Camera) technology debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in August, but it’s unlikely for the Galaxy S22 series to utilize it.

The base Galaxy S22 model and the Galaxy S22+ could feature a 10MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom and a 50MP main camera. And although the camera setup probably won’t see massive upgrades in some areas, it could boast one major improvement through continuous zoom capabilities. There are speculations that the Galaxy S22 Ultra model will feature a 200MP camera — possibly the ISOCELL HP1 unveiled in September.

Update 1: The Galaxy S22 Ultra was later rumored to feature a 108MP camera similar to its predecessor.

Update 2: Early unofficial renders indicate that the Galaxy S22 series will have a standard Infinity-O selfie camera cutout. In addition, Olympus reportedly denied its rumored involvement with the Galaxy S22 series.

Update 3: The Galaxy S22 and S22+ will have the same 10MP selfie camera as the previous models, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a 40MP selfie sensor.

Galaxy S22 series design

We’re not sure where Samsung will push the design of its Galaxy S lineup next, and this is in large part because it’s too early to tell. Samsung doesn’t seem to have decided on all the design aspects of the Galaxy S22 series, but more details are bound to leak eventually. Fan renders exist, though they are based largely on speculation.

For now, there’s one rumor suggesting that Samsung is thinking about employing polycarbonate for the back panels of both the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ while reserving Gorilla Glass for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This could lead to lower production costs and launch prices for the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+.

This is a developing story that will be updated with new bits of information, leaks, and rumors as they emerge, so make sure you bookmark it and check back regularly if you want to stay up to date with the Galaxy S22 series.

Update 1: The first unofficial renders based on leaked information emerged. They reveal a Galaxy S22 Ultra model with a dedicated S Pen slot, squarer corners, and an arguably outdated camera housing design.

Update 2: Similar renders depicting the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ have emerged as well. According to these images, they use the camera housing design language as the Galaxy S21 series.

Samsung Galaxy S22

Update 3: Photos of third-party cases for the Galaxy S22 series emerged, confirming many design details that were seen in the aforementioned renders.

Update 4: The Galaxy S22 Ultra’s design was revealed in real hands-on photos. It has an S Pen slot and a much more refined camera housing design.

Update 5: The Galaxy S22 and S22+ got rendered in high-quality images based on leaked information from an ex-Samsung employee.

Update 6: The Galaxy S22 and S22+ could be released in four base colors: black, green, pink gold, and white. The Galaxy S22 Ultra should be release in black, dark red, green, and white. According to a report from the CEO of DSCC, the Galaxy S22 series should enter production in the first week of December.

Galaxy S22 series hardware specs

Samsung’s upcoming flagships should be released with an Exynos chipset in some markets and a solution provided by Qualcomm in others.

On one hand, there’s the unannounced Snapdragon 898 chipset, which is said to feature a Cortex X2 CPU core, three Cortex A710 cores, and three Cortex A510 cores.

On the Exynos side of things, the upcoming Exynos 2200 SoC could become the first chipset developed by Samsung to boast AMD graphics, the latter of which would greatly improve graphics performance.

This chipset is built by Samsung Foundry on a 5nm process and is said to be fit for both smartphones and laptops.

In terms of batteries, there are clues hinting at the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra having 3,800mAh, 4,500mAh, and 5,000mAh batteries, respectively. And of course, all three phones should support fast charging and wireless charging.

Update 1: The Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S22 was benchmarked online and it didn’t perform as well as the Exynos model in preliminary tests.

Update 2: Separate reports indicate that the Galaxy S22 series will employ smaller batteries than the ongoing flagship models. The Galaxy S22 and S22+ will reportedly have 3,700mAh and 4,500mAh batteries, respectively.

Update 3: The Galaxy S22 Ultra is likely powered by a 5,000mAh battery, this time with 45W fast-charging.

Snapdragon 898 and Exynos 2200 variants will be available in these markets:

Interestingly enough, Samsung is rumored to bring Qualcomm to Exynos markets and vice versa for the first time in the Galaxy S history. The Galaxy S22 lineup could launch with the Snapdragon 898 in India, while Verizon Wireless may want to bring the Exynos 2200 model to the USA.

Update 1: Samsung is working on another model number besides the usual SM-S90xN, SM-S90xB, and SM-S90xU, for countries in Africa and Asia.

Update 2: The Galaxy S22 series in the USA and Africa-Asia should be equipped with the Snapdragon 898 chipset. The Exynos 2200 SoC will be used for South Korea and Europe.

Galaxy S22 Ultra series naming

Every bit of recent evidence indicates that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will have a dedicated S Pen slot just like a Galaxy Note flagship. Because of this, some reports said the phone will be renamed and hit the shelves as the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra. But according to more recent information, the flagship will go on sale bearing the “Galaxy S22 Ultra” moniker.

Galaxy A73 renders show up online, say bye bye to the headphone jack

Leaks have been aplenty for Samsung’s Galaxy A53, Galaxy A33 and even the Galaxy A13 (the 5G version of which went official yesterday). However, information about their elder sibling aka the Galaxy A73 has been scarce. We finally get to see what the smartphone will look like thanks to renders provided by @Onleaks and Zoutons.

At the back of the Galaxy A73, we see an immediately noticeable triple-camera layout reminiscent of the Galaxy A72. At the front, we get a hole-punch camera nestled at the top edge of the screen. Basically, nothing seems to be changing as far as the overall design is concerned, and frankly, we’re okay with that.

The power button and volume rocker sit on the left spine of the Galaxy A73’s chassis. Lastly, there’s a SIM card slot at the top and a USB Type-C port at the bottom. Unfortunately, there is no trace of a 3.5mm audio jack, which could drive off plenty of buyers. The Galaxy A53 is said to lack a headphone jack, as well, in case you haven’t been keeping up.

Previous reports told us that the Galaxy A73 would be the first Galaxy A series smartphone to pack a 108MP camera sensor. However, Samsung will probably cheap out on the display and use one made by BOE (or another Chinese OEM).

You could soon start gaming via Steam on your Samsung Chromebook

Steam is the biggest marketplace to download and play AAA and indie gaming titles on PCs and Macs. Chromebooks, however, do not have access to an official Steam client. However, that could soon change, at least going by new information that was revealed by the folks over at Android Police.

According to the report, two new flags present in Chrome OS’ latest dev channel build refer to Borealis, which is a codename for Steam’s project for Google’s operating system. Since the current developer version of Chrome OS will likely be released via the official channel soon, we could soon see official support for Steam on the platform.

Evidence suggests that it will also feature Steam’s Proton APIs, which means that one day you can play Windows games on Chrome OS. However, Chromebooks use relatively weak hardware, at least compared to Windows laptops, and multiple compatibility layers mean huge performance penalties. Still, an official Steam client could allow you to play light games on your Samsung Chromebook.

If Chromebooks get better hardware in the future, especially chipsets (maybe from Samsung itself?) with powerful GPUs, official Steam support will bring access to a lot of popular games, especially e-sports titles, and consumers might not have to use two separate machines for work and play.

Qualcomm confirms Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is made using Samsung’s 4nm process

Qualcomm unveiled its next-generation flagship smartphone chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, earlier this week. While the company had announced that the chipset is made using a 4nm process, it had not revealed which company is manufacturing it. Now, Qualcomm executives have confirmed that the chipset is being fabricated by Samsung Foundry.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon revealed yesterday during a Q&A session at the company’s annual summit that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is made by Samsung Foundry on its latest 4nm process. Meanwhile, Alex Katouzian, SVP and General Manager of Qualcomm’s Mobile, Compute, and Infrastructure business, said to reporters in South Korea that the new flagship Snapdragon chip isn’t made by TSMC.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will compete with Apple’s A15 Bionic, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000, and Samsung’s Exynos 2200 smartphone chipsets. Both A15 Bionic and Dimensity 9000 are made by TSMC, Samsung Foundry’s primary rival and the world’s biggest chip contract manufacturer. The Exynos 2200 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 are made by Samsung Foundry’s 4nm process. TSMC’s 4nm process is said to be more efficient than Samsung’s 4nm tech.

Apple uses a majority of TSMC’s semiconductor production capacity to make A15 Bionic, M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max chipsets for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The remaining capacity is used to manufacture the Dimensity 9000. Hence, Qualcomm may have had to use Samsung Foundry to manufacture the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

The Galaxy S22, which will be launched in February 2022, will use the Exynos 2200 in some countries and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in other regions. While the Exynos 2200 hasn’t been officially unveiled yet, it is expected to feature a CPU structure that’s similar to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Dimensity 9000. All three chipsets use ARM’s new CPU cores: Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710, and Cortex-A510.

Samsung is expecting the Galaxy S22 to sell like hot cakes

Samsung’s Galaxy S series hasn’t seen impressive sales over the past few years, and the company is hoping that it will change next year with the Galaxy S22 series. With increased sales, the South Korean firm is also hoping to increase its market share in 2022.

According to a new report from TheElec, Samsung is expecting its global smartphone market share to reach nearly 22% next year. The company reportedly expects global smartphone sales to increase to 1.52 billion units and hopes to sell 390 million of those devices. When it comes to the breakdown of those 390 million units, the South Korean firm expects the Galaxy S22 series to make up 33 million units.

Apparently, Samsung has targeted to sell 14 million Galaxy S22 units, 8 million Galaxy S22+ units, and 11 million Galaxy S22 Ultra units worldwide. In comparison, the company expects to sell 267 million Galaxy A23 and Galaxy A33 units and 92 million units of Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A73.

The company is reportedly planning to improve its marketing strategies and offer more colors and features at the same price to improve sales. Apparently, Samsung is also looking at cost optimizations when it comes to smartphone production. The South Korean firm could also bring IP67/IP68 rating to more devices next year, just as it did with the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 this year.
