SamMobile is looking for writers, come be a part of the team!

Here at SamMobile, we are dedicated to bringing our readers the latest scoop on everything related to Samsung’s mobile devices, and we are currently looking to hire a news writer that can contribute towards that end. If you’re a fan/user of Samsung devices and have the writing skills to, well, write about them, then this could be your chance to get in on the internet’s largest (and most accurate) source of Samsung news, leaks and rumors.

We are looking for two to three new writers, one in the US/Canada, one in Europe, and one from a country that falls under the GMT +11 or later time zone. The news writer position is paid, and a news writer must meet the following requirements:

  • First and foremost, you must have a good command of the English language. We cannot emphasize this enough – occasional errors are acceptable, but you must have the basic grammar skills that are expected from any writer/reporter (hint: if you have habits such as writing twitter instead of Twitter, it’s probably best not to apply.)
  • passion for Samsung devices and news. You don’t need to own a Samsung device, but you should have an idea of what has been going on in the world of Samsung’s many different mobile products.
  • Free time to contribute 1-3 articles each day. There is no set time for when you can write, but if you think you won’t be available for, let’s say, two or three days in the week, it’s probably best to not apply in the first place. Weekends are not mandatory, but we pay extra if you can afford the time.
  • Prior experience writing for any technology website, preferably mobile-related. This isn’t a requirement, but would be a plus point.
  • WordPress knowledge.

Think you meet the above requirements? If yes, then send in an email to am@sammobile.com and dd@sammobile.com with News Writer as the subject and the following details:

  • An article on the Galaxy S7 that talks about all the specs and rumors that have leaked until now. It should be a news article instead of a feature-length article, so keep it short and to the point while including all the details.
  • A regular news article based on this source: Samsung might launch a phone upgrade program with the Galaxy S7
  • The device you’re currently using (again, doesn’t need to be a Samsung.)
  • Your location, and the time frame you will be available in.
  • Links to articles you may have written on other websites, if any.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge surfaces in leaked Geekbench documents

We’ve already reported that Samsung is gearing up to announce the Galaxy S7 edge alongside its flagship Galaxy S7 at its Unpacked 2016 event on February 21, which incidentally is intentionally the day before Mobile World Congress kicks off in Barcelona. Fortunately, the rumor mill has been spinning at a rate of knots, and we’ve seen quite a bit of both devices already. Just to add to the hordes of leaks, the S7 edge has today appeared in Geekbench’s online database bearing the model number SM-G935.

Unfortunately, the handset didn’t score as high as we’d hoped in the benchmark. It only pulled in a single-core score of 1363, and a multi-core rating of 4951, which doesn’t match the results obtained for the Snapdragon 820-powered Galaxy S7 that appeared on Geekbench last month with an astonishing score of 2456 in the single-core test and an eye-watering outcome of 5423 in the multi-core test. However, it’s perfectly feasible that the stunted numbers are the result of a prototype unit operating at a slower clock speed for testing purposes.

If the recent AnTuTu benchmark is anything to go by, it looks like the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will bundle matching specifications. The regular model will sport a 5.1-inch display, while the curved variant will feature a 5.5-inch panel. All other internals appear to remain the same, meaning that both units will pack the brand new Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel camera instead of a 16-megapixel sensor, a 5-megapixel front-facing shooter and 64GB of internal storage.

Both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will ship running Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the latest version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface plastered over the top. This is great news for diehard fans of the open-source operating system who prefer a more stock-like experience as the South Korean company has been working on toning down the latest iteration of its front-end skin in order to make it smoother and more compliant with Google’s Material Design guidelines.

Are you excited for the launch of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge? What features are you hoping to see on board? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Gear S2 Rose Gold and Platinum available for pre-order in the United Kingdom

Earlier this week Samsung announced that it is launching the Gear S2 Classic New Edition globally. The new edition features two new models of the Samsung smartwatch that were initially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 earlier this month. There is nothing different about the new models except that one comes in 18K Rose Gold and the other in Platinum. Both models are now available for pre-order in the United Kingdom.

Online retailer MobileFun has both the Gear S2 Classic Rose Gold and Platinum available for pre-order right now for £399.99. The only thing that’s new about both models is the color scheme otherwise it’s the same exact smartwatch that has been available for several months now. Interested customers can place their pre-orders starting today with shipments expected to begin in the near future.

Samsung Galaxy A9 detailed screen analysis

A new year, and a new Galaxy series. This year, Samsung released the Galaxy A 2016 edition of devices, and we recently went through the Galaxy A9′s display to see how it measures up. The Galaxy A9 is the largest phone in the A series, so let’s find out what its screen brings to the table. We have measured the screen in the mode that is comes with out of the box, which is Adaptive display. We have also measured Basic mode, which is supposed to be the most accurate, and also the mode that we liked best: AMOLED Photo. If you want to know what the graphs in this measurement mean, please refer to this post. First, some basic stuff. The Galaxy A8 sports a 6-inch Super AMOLED display with Full HD (1920×1080 pixels) resolution and a pixel density of around 367 PPI. It rocks the infamous Diamond PenTile pixel layout, which you can see in the close-up picture below. A9 Close up Brightness Levels First things first, the screen has a maximum brightness of around 466.61 cd/m2 (nits) in manual brightness setting, and 700.99 cd/m2 in auto brightness. At the most dim setting, the screen can go as low as 2.20 cd/m2 in auto brightness mode, and as low as 2.20 cd/m2 in manual brightness.

Screenshot_2016-01-27-14-11-49 Screenshot_2016-01-27-14-12-15 Screenshot_2016-01-27-14-13-35 Screenshot_2016-01-27-14-12-56

What this means is that this is an excellent screen for this type of phone, and you can read the display easily in bright sunlight and not strain your eyes in dark conditions. What really surprised me is the amount of brightness it produces in auto brightness mode – 700 cd/m2 is really a lot! Adaptive Display Adaptive Color Gamut When we look at its color gamut and the colors in the sRGB color space, we can conclude that every color misses its target point and the screen is thus oversaturated (a common theme on AMOLED displays). The white point is pretty much off target which you can see in the graph on the right side below. The margin of the displayed primary and secondary colors isn’t that good, with a Delta E error of 7.2 being too high, which is something we see all the time in this screen mode.  Adaptive Grayscale

The error of the Grayscale color is not too great at 5.4 and the whites are blueish here as well; that is something manufacturers do to make the whites look more white, especially on AMOLED displays. The contrast ratio, however, is unmeasurable so that is extremely good. Blacks are really black, yet when we get to the lighter colors we see that blueish tint popping out. This is something you can see at the color temperature as well, with a temperature of 7459 being too cold (and 6509 is the sweet spot).

Basic Mode

Basic Color Gamut

As we have said in the past, we aren’t a fan of Adaptive mode (though some of us don’t exactly mind using it), but we have the option of changing it to Basic mode. The basic mode is the closest you can get to a nicely calibrated screen, though the display can look a little dull when you first lay your eyes on this screen mode. In the sRGB color space it scores great as it hits most of the targets, with the margin of the displayed primary and secondary colors having a Delta E error of 2.3 which is good. The white point is just a little off center, but nothing to make you worry about. Basic Grayscale

It’s a similar story in grayscale, although it boosts red a little too much which results in a warmer feeling screen and that is something you can see at the color temperature as well. With a color temperature of 6361 it is a lot closer to 6509, which would be the best score.  The margin of color error in Grayscale of Delte E 3.0 is good but not better than other Basic Modes we measured; for example the Galaxy A8 had a Delta E of 1.5 in the Grayscale color error.

AMOLED Photo

Amoled Photo Color Gamut

Amoled Photo Grayscale

The mode I always set my screen to is AMOLED Photo, this gives you the punchiness of the Adaptive Display mode without making it feel to much. Funny detail here is that the Grayscale color error is just a tad better than the basic mode. A first timer for any of the screens that we have measured until now! Color temperature is almost the same as basic mode, and contrast ratio is just as good as the others.

Conclusion

The Galaxy A9 surprised me with its brightness levels in automatic mode, hitting 700 cd/m2, which is insanely bright. The screen is very good and we hope Samsung continues to lead the pack with their screens, especially on non-flagship phones.

Only, the screen isn’t calibrated as good as the Galaxy A8, this is something I find very odd. Usually the newer screens get better and better calibrated but that wasn’t the case here. It is still an awesome screen, don’t get me wrong, yet I had hoped for a notable improvement over last year’s displays.

All in all though, I really love this screen and it makes this phone an awesome media consuming device, which is the whole point of a 6-inch display!

Themes Thursday: All the themes released this week are free

As a part of Themes Thursday, we showcase some of best themes released each week in Samsung’s Theme Store. Unlike the week earlier, the South Korean smartphone giant has released just fifteen themes release this week. On a brighter note, all these themes are free!

The [WoOS_Design] Baby Blue theme is quite easy on the eyes, while the Doong-E For Chicken (that’s a funny name), Fashion Robot, and Uniko themes seem interesting to us. Last week, 23 themes were released, but we didn’t like any of them. Did you like any of the new themes from this week?
