2-19-2016 Firmware Updates: Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note 4, and more

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge point of sale banners arriving in stores

With the official announcement of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in less than two days, carriers and retailers around the world are no doubt working around the clock, making final preparations on putting the two devices up front and center to court consumers. We have received a tip that carriers in the UK are readying POS (point of sale) banners for the S7 and S7 edge – the image below comes from carrier Three in the UK, and we’re told EE has received the banner as well.

Our tipster says Samsung isn’t being as secretive as it usually is with phone launches, and that might just be in the company’s interests. After all, while the 2015 Galaxy S flagships brought many improvements, they also alienated quite a few die-hard Samsung smartphone users thanks to decisions some might call downright cruel. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are all about course correction, and a little word of mouth (alright, a lot of word of mouth) is only going to garner more attention towards the handsets.

Speaking of Three UK, it seems the carrier will be offering the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge “3 days early” for those who pre-order. That would be March 8, if the oft-cited March 11 release date for Europe (and the US) turns out to be accurate. Pre-orders should go live on the same day as the announcement, which is February 21.

Samsung copying Apple with a battery case? Check out Samsung’s history record

Samsung is always on the hook for something in the media spotlight. It’s the most well-known Android OEM, not to mention the most popular, and its smartphones sell like crazy. The same company that makes great hardware and software, however, is always placed in the shadow of its main rival, Apple. No matter what Samsung does, no matter how innovative, Apple will do it and get credit for it.

And now, the “Samsung copies Apple” circus has come back to town. The media continues to propagate the mantra that Samsung is, once again, copying Apple with Samsung soon to bring a new Galaxy S7 battery case to the market. Unfortunately, those who regurgitate this claim (I wish I knew the exact source of this unjustified claim) are forgetting Samsung’s history with battery cases. Let’s dive into it, shall we?

Samsung’s history with battery cases

Galaxy S battery case 2

Samsung emerged with a battery case for the Galaxy S that provided an additional 600mAh of juice, 500 additional hours of standby time, and 9 additional hours of talk time. Along came the Galaxy S2, and Samsung released a Galaxy S2 battery case that provided an additional 1300mAh of battery performance to the second-generation Galaxy S device. Both the Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 arrived far before 2015, as did their battery cases.

Samsung Galaxy S2 battery power pack

Samsung’s history with extended battery and extra battery kits

Galaxy S3 Extended Battery Kit

Samsung has also had a history of producing extra battery kits and extended battery kits for customers who’d rather not swap their current protection case for better battery life or prefer to carry their phone around in all its glory.

The Galaxy S3 proved to be the darling of the Android world, the star that put Samsung on the rise (the name “Samsung” means “rising star”), and the most popular Samsung smartphone to date had a battery case released by the Korean giant. It was called the Galaxy S3 Extended Battery Kit. The Galaxy S3 Extended Battery Kit had a 3,000mAh battery, which was larger than the Galaxy S3’s battery (2,100mAh).

There was also a Galaxy S5 Extended Battery Kit that contained a special back cover and a 3,500mAh battery. The Galaxy S5 Extended Battery was 7.21mm thick as opposed to the regular Galaxy S5 battery that was 5.35mm thick.

Now, let’s be clear: extended battery kits and extra battery kits are not the same as battery cases. Some extended battery kits come with back covers and batteries to replace the ones you get right out of the box, but the advantage to these extended batteries is that they’re always larger than the pre-installed ones – meaning that you can simply upgrade your battery life without having to buy a battery case altogether. Some favor removable batteries, and this option seems to have been a favorite of many a Samsung fan.

The mantra creators forget: the battery case for the Galaxy S7 is a wireless charging case

Galaxy S6 edge Plus Note 5 wireless charging battery pack

Apple has created a Smart Battery Case that adds an additional battery within a protector case to the battery life already within the internal battery of the iPhone itself, but Apple has done nothing with the iPhone in regard to wireless charging. Duracell, for example, had a Powermat wireless charging system designed for the iPhone 4s, for example, but a wireless-charging iPhone experience won’t have the fruit company at the helm (at least not yet, anyway).

In contrast, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 battery case is shown to have not only a 2,700mAh battery but also wireless charging – which has been a technology absent with the Korean giant’s rival. In other words, Samsung’s Galaxy S7 battery cases for the original S7 and the other models can’t be compared to Apple’s Smart Battery Case because wireless charging technology makes them different and places Samsung’s ahead of Apple’s own case. Samsung has been making battery accessories for a long time, and, though we’re glad to see Apple enter this realm for the sake of its own customers, the Korean giant should get the credit for the battery accessories between these two rivals, not Apple.

Samsung’s Galaxy S7 wireless charging battery case matches its new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 accessories

Galaxy S6 edge+ wireless charging battery case

Samsung’s preparing to bring its Galaxy S7 wireless charging case to market, but the Korean giant is preparing to bring Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 5 wireless battery packs to market as well.

These battery packs, seen here and here, match what Samsung is doing in the Galaxy S7 accessories that are soon to arrive. The battery packs are identical to what some would consider to be a case on the smartphone (it looks like a case, and wraps around the phone and protects the back of the device like a case), but it also wirelessly charges the device – in other words, it charges and protects your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy Note 5, simultaneously. It contains in-built wireless charging that differs from typical battery cases because Samsung can keep it thin, light, and chic while providing the battery life you need on the go.

If you’re wondering why Apple’s Smart Battery Case won’t win any fashion contests, just take a look at Samsung’s wireless charging battery packs in the links above.

Conclusion

Extended battery kits, extra battery kits, power packs, and battery cases, are just some of the accessories Samsung has made for its smartphones over the last few years. While we wish there were more battery cases both past and present, 2 battery cases establish the trend that Samsung isn’t bowing to Apple on this one. It’s an even bigger case (pun intended) the other way around.

More renders of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge emerge

Renowned leakster @OnLeaks has struck again, this time with more renders of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. This comes shortly after we came across a bunch of images of the Galaxy S7 edge, including a live shot showing the lock screen of the device. Another leak told us about the size difference between the two handsets. These renders are going to be extensively used in all marketing and promotional materials once the flagships have been unveiled. Some wallpapers of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge leaked on our forums a few days ago, which is consistent with what we’re seeing in the renders.

You can check out the two new renders below.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge to pack a 12MP camera with a 1/2.5 sensor and a powerful loudspeaker

With the launch of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge just around the corner, it’s pretty understandable that the rumor mill is spinning ten to the dozen. Earlier today we revealed that the Galaxy S7 edge would be slightly larger than its sibling, and now, if a listing on the Zauba import database is anything to go by, we have reason to believe that both devices will, in fact pack the brand new 12-megapixel camera module that we previously reported on.

That said, the component itself appears to be significantly larger than we initially thought. The table within the listing suggests that the 12MP shooter will feature a whopping 1/2.5-inch sensor with an individual pixel size of at least 1.4-microns, which is bigger than the standard 1.12-microns pixel size that most mobile phones with an 8-megapixel camera pack. This is rather exciting news as it means the camera will be able to collect more light which should allow for higher-quality images to be captured.

The entry also disclosed that the duo will both have a couple of powerful speakers on board. The first – which we believe to be the earpiece – will have a strength of 1.2W, while the loudspeaker will have a total output of 1.5W. Software optimizations will enable the handsets to playback audio using both speakers in unison for an even louder experience.

On a related note, a leaked Samsung Pay promotional poster has also surfaced online, courtesy of Spanish bank La Caixa, corroborating everything we’ve heard about both handsets so far. It states that the Galaxy S7 will sport a 5.1-inch Quad HD always-on display and a 3,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy S7 edge will boast a 5.5-inch identical panel coupled with a 3,600mAh cell. Both devices will have a Snapdragon 820 SoC, 4GB of RAM and IP67 water protection.

New leak reveals size difference between the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge

While it’s already established that the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge would have differing screen sizes, a new leak makes it more apparent. We have received a new image that shows the two flagships posing side-by-side, revealing well and truly that the Galaxy S7 edge will be significantly bigger than its sibling. This comes right after another leak gave us a good idea of the home screen and the display-to-bezel ratio of the Galaxy S7 edge.

c4365219jw1f14dnzysosj20k00b9jrl

There’s not much we can tell from this image apart from the obvious. We got a very good look of the Galaxy S7 edge in a silver avatar yesterday, while other leaks have so far confirmed the always-on display. Samsung partially confirmed that the Galaxy S7 would be water resistant, so there’s quite a lot that we’ve learnt about the two flagships so far.

Here are more pictures of the upcoming Galaxy Tab A 7.0

Samsung has been working on a new budget tablet for a release in the coming weeks. We have known that for some time, though there was confusion on whether the tablet will be a new Galaxy Tab A variant or a Galaxy Tab E. It’s possible the US will get it as the Galaxy Tab E while Europe goes with Tab A; we have managed to get a few more pictures of the device, which was called the Tab A by our sources.

The new Galaxy Tab A has a 7.0-inch display, with a 1.3GHz quad-core processor and 1.5GHz RAM expected under the hood. Other specs should include 8GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, a microSD slot, and a 4,000 mAh battery. It should be running Android 5.1 Lollipop, though it could also be Marshmallow considering the last set of leaked pictures showed the device with the new wallpaper from the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. A late March/early April release is rumored, along with a price of 169 Euro.

Take a look at the Tab A 7.0′s pictures down below, and let us know what you think!

Latest Galaxy S7 edge image reveals lockscreen and slim bezels

The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge will be officially unveiled this Sunday in Barcelona (in 360 degree from various angles). As we all know, it’s customary for leaks to prematurely reveal several crucial aspects of the device just as we inch closer towards the launch. Keeping up with that tradition, a new revelation from French source @stagueve a.k.a Steve Hemmerstoffer has given us a glimpse of the Galaxy S7 with the display turned on.

gs7edge-leak

While we have seen leaks of the handset before, this is the first time we’re getting to check out the device with the display on. From this image, we can ascertain that the bezel space has been kept to a minimum, thus ensuring that the handset has a decent screen-to-body ratio, something that we saw on the Galaxy S6 edge+ as well.

This image follows a leaked video that showed the regular Galaxy S7′s software in action. The home screen wallpaper shown in the image was leaked on the SamMobile forums sometime ago, so there’s enough evidence to confirm this is in fact the real deal.

Samsung’s history with battery cases

Samsung emerged with a battery case for the Galaxy S that provided an additional 600mAh of juice, 500 additional hours of standby time, and 9 additional hours of talk time. Along came the Galaxy S2, and Samsung released a Galaxy S2 battery case that provided an additional 1300mAh of battery performance to the second-generation Galaxy S device. Both the Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 arrived far before 2015, as did their battery cases.

Samsung’s history with extended battery and extra battery kits

Samsung has also had a history of producing extra battery kits and extended battery kits for customers who’d rather not swap their current protection case for better battery life or prefer to carry their phone around in all its glory.

galaxy-s-battery-case

The Galaxy S III proved to be the darling of the Android world, the star that put Samsung on the rise (the name “Samsung” means “rising star”), and the most popular Samsung smartphone to date had a battery case released by the Korean giant. It was called the Galaxy S III Extended Battery Kit. The Galaxy S III Extended Battery Kit had a 3,000mAh battery, which was larger than the Galaxy S III’s battery (2,100mAh).

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Unpacked event will be streamed live in 360 degree

Samsung has announced that the Unpacked event for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be “presented in 360 live streaming.” This is the first time the Unpacked event will be visible from multiple angles for viewers around the world, and naturally users of the Gear VR will be getting the best experience. We guess this is also a hint that the Gear 360 could be made official alongside the S7 duo. Of course, this could also indicate that all the rumors were simply talking of the event being streamed in 360 degree, but all the focus on virtual reality means the Gear 360 could get considerable attention this Sunday.

The entire thing will be recorded from four different angles, and you will be able to watch the proceedings from the auditorium, from stage left, from stage right or from center stage. Android and iOS users will need to grab the Unpacked 360 View app to view the event (here’s the Google Play link), while PC users will simply need to visit the Galaxy Unpacked website. For Gear VR users, the Unpacked 360 View app can be downloaded from the Oculus Store. The apps don’t do anything right now, but they should become active on February 21, at 7 p.m. (CET).
