Galaxy Watch 3 support pages go live on Samsung’s website, launch nears

Samsung is expected to launch a new Galaxy Watch alongside the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Fold 2 in August. After it recently received the necessary certification from Chinese authorities, the smartwatch seems to be getting ready for the official launch as it has appeared on Samsung’s website.

Support pages for the upcoming smartwatch’s variants have appeared on the company’s website for the South Korean market, confirming that the next-generation Galaxy Watch will launch soon. Four variants of the watch—SM-R840NZKAKOO, SM-R840NZSAKOO, SM-R850NZDAKOO, and SM-R850NZSAKOO—have been confirmed through support pages. The watch passed through China’s MIIT certification last month and FCC’s certification process last week.

Next-generation Galaxy Watch features

SM-R840 and SM-R850 are expected to be model numbers for two different sizes of the Galaxy Watch 3, and they’ll feature 41mm and 45mm sizes, respectively. We had earlier reported exclusively that Samsung’s upcoming smartwatches would feature 8GB storage, which is double the storage capacity of earlier Galaxy watches. SM-R845 and SM-R855 could be LTE variants of SM-R840 and SM-R850, respectively.

There’s a possibility of the smartwatch being called the Galaxy Watch or the Galaxy Watch 2. Samsung is expected to launch Stainless Steel and Titanium versions of the Galaxy Watch 3. The company is sticking to a physical rotating bezel for the upcoming smartwatch, similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch.

We expect the upcoming smartwatch to feature a newer processor, larger screens with Gorilla Glass DX protection, heart-rate monitor, sleep tracking, ECG, wireless charging, MIL-STD-810G design, and 5ATM water resistance. It could also come with a newer version of One UI for wearables.

Samsung VP Lee Jae-yong appears in court, awaits decision on whether he’ll go back to jail

Lee Jae-yong, Samsung Group’s Vice President, isn’t entirely out of the corruption scandal yet. He had issued a historic apology last month and vowed to end the royal family line in the business. A few days later, allegations against him cropped up, relating to his involvement in the controversial merger between Samsung C&T and Cheil Industries. Samsung Group had to step in to deny those allegations.

Today, Lee Jae-yong arrived at a court in South Korea and is awaiting the court’s decision in the case. The court will decide if he will go back to jail after more than two years of freedom. Prosecutors had asked the court last week to issue a warrant against Lee to culminate a probe into accounting fraud and the controversial 2015 merger of two Samsung affiliates. It is being alleged that the merger helped Lee Jae-yong plans to have greater control over Samsung Group.

Samsung Group denied Lee’s involvement in alleged stock manipulation. The company said that it is “beyond common sense” to think that Lee was involved in the decision-making process. Samsung Group mentioned in its statement over the weekend that the lengthy probe is weighing on the management during the COVID-19 crisis and the ongoing trade tensions between China and the US, adding to the uncertainties.

Samsung’s heir apparent appeared at a court in Seoul, South Korea, earlier today in a dark suit and wearing a face mask. He did not answer questions from the media and reporters. He is expected to head to a detention center after the court’s hearing. The judge’s decision is expected to arrive later today or early tomorrow.

Lee Jae-yong served one year in jail in a bribery scandal. He was accused of giving horses as gifts to win support from former President Park Geun-hye’s government for the merger of Cheil Industries and Samsung C&T. The merger increased Lee’s control over Samsung Group, which includes Samsung Electronics. The company’s chairman, Lee Kun-hee, has been ailing for a few years now, and it is a critical time for Samsung.

Buyer beware: Verizon’s Galaxy S20 5G doesn’t have a microSD slot

The 5G variant of the smallest Galaxy S20 model came a few months late to Verizon’s network, because its compact (by today’s standards) body didn’t have enough space for the antenna bands necessary for mmWave 5G support. Since Verizon is exclusively using mmWave 5G to offer higher data speeds, the carrier worked with Samsung to create a custom Galaxy S20 5G model that incorporates additional antenna bands, but it turns out the support for high-speed 5G comes at a considerable cost.

No expandable storage, ‘only’ 8GB of RAM

The Galaxy S20 5G that Verizon is selling — called Galaxy S20 5G UW — does not have a microSD slot. You read that right: If you buy this particular version of Samsung’s 2020 flagship, you will be unable to expand storage with a microSD card once the internal storage runs out. To make things worse, the device is only available in a 128GB configuration. Neither Samsung nor Verizon is being very clear about the lack of expandable storage, which means quite a few folks realized the fact after buying the phone.

And that’s not all. While all three Galaxy S20 models come with 12GB of RAM as standard on the 5G variants, the Galaxy S20 5G on Verizon comes with only 8GB of RAM. Granted, that shouldn’t be as much of an issue as the inability to add extra storage for most people, but it’s still a factor you should consider if you’ve been meaning to buy the smallest Galaxy S20 model from Verizon.

Have you purchased the Galaxy S20 5G from Verizon? Are you bothered by the lack of expandable storage, or is 128 gigs of storage enough for your needs? Let us know down in the comments!
