Samsung Internet bug is hijacking default browser in custom tabs

Samsung Internet is one of the best web browsers for Android smartphones and tablets. People often use Samsung’s internet browser on devices from other manufacturers and applaud it for being comparatively fast, light on resources, and featuring add-on extensions. However, the app now seems to have a bug on some Galaxy phones.

The web browser from Samsung seems to be suffering a bug that forces it to hijack custom tabs (browser windows inside apps like Twitter). Even when an app other than Samsung Internet is set as the default web browser of the device, Samsung’s web browser seems to be taking over while opening links inside third-party apps. For example, even if Google Chrome is set as the default web browser on a Galaxy device, clicking on a link inside an app opens Samsung Internet.

The same issue seems to be happening when a link is highlighted or when the ‘open in’ option is selected from the long-press menu. This problem is appearing on some Galaxy S20 units, and we are not sure if it appears on other Galaxy phones. The exact reason behind this problem isn’t known right now, but Samsung’s implementation of custom tabs on some of its phones may be buggy.

The South Korean smartphone giant recently updated its web browser to add more privacy-related features, and it placed more commonly used action shortcuts on the bottom bar. Samsung Internet, which has over 1 billion installs, also comes with a lot of other useful features, including Dark Mode, customizable menu, extensions, ad blocking, video assistant, and smart anti-tracking.

Samsung planning to launch 600MP camera sensors that exceed human eye capabilities

Samsung has been making great strides towards larger camera sensors with ultra-high resolutions. Last year, the company announced 64MP image sensor modules for smartphones and then unveiled its flagship 108MP camera sensor, which is used int he recently-launched Galaxy S20 Ultra. Now, the company says that it has bigger plans in the field of image sensors.

Yongin Park, EVP, Head of Sensor Business Team, System LSI Business, said in an article published on the company’s website that human eyes are said to match a resolution of around 500MP. In comparison, most modern DSLR cameras and smartphones offer 40MP and 12MP sensors, respectively, and that the industry has a long way to go before it can match the capabilities of human eyes. To that end, the company is planning to develop camera sensors that have resolutions of as high as 600MP.

While it is tricky to create a balance between resolution and pixel size, as smaller pixels can reduce image quality, the company has been developing advances pixel binning technologies. Its 64MP sensors use 2×2 pixel binning, while its 108MP sensors use 3×3 pixel binning to increase light absorption and mitigate issues related to low-light conditions. Similar technologies will be used in the company’s upcoming ultra-high-resolution camera sensors.

Samsung is also developing camera sensors for autonomous vehicles and drones

Park said that most cameras available today can only take images that are visible to the human eye (wavelengths between 450nm and 750nm), and sensors that can detect light wavelengths outside of that range are hard to come by. Image sensors that can perceive ultraviolet light and infrared waves can be used to benefit a wide range of areas, including agricultural and medical fields.

Image sensors with ultraviolet light perception can be used for diagnosing skin cancer, while infrared camera sensors could help in quality control in industrial use cases. Samsung’s Systems LSI business, which develops image sensors, is also looking to create sensors that can register smells and tastes.

While the most popular use case of high-resolution sensors has recently been the field of smartphones, Samsung says that it is looking to provide camera sensors for autonomous vehicles, drones, and other IoT (Internet of Things) devices. The company’s aim to develop 600MP camera sensors might not be for smartphones, but other devices such as smart cars. It is being rumored that Samsung is planning to launch a 150MP Nonacell camera sensor for smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 to get blood pressure monitoring feature soon

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 is Samsung’s most feature-packed smartwatch yet. It features activity tracking, ECG, female health tracking, heart rate monitoring, mindfulness, and sleep tracking. Now, the company’s latest smartwatch is receiving one more critical feature—blood pressure monitoring—via a new app.

The South Korean electronics giant has announced that the Samsung Health Monitor app has been cleared by South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) as a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) to measure blood pressure. It will become a cuffless, government-cleared, and over-the-counter blood pressure monitoring app.

Blood pressure monitoring will be available on Galaxy Watch Active 2 in Q3 2020

The Galaxy Watch Active 2 needs to be calibrated with a traditional handcuff, as shown in the video below before it can start measuring your blood pressure. The advanced heart rate sensors on the smartwatch measure blood pressure through pulse wave analysis. The smartwatch measures the relationship between the calibrated values and the blood pressure change to determine blood pressure.

The Samsung Health Monitor app is designed to give users greater insight into their health and helps them in making informed decisions based on credible blood pressure data. The app will be available on the Galaxy Watch Active 2 in Q3 2020, and then it will be rolled out to older smartwatches, including the Galaxy Watch.

High blood pressure is a medical condition that is known to significantly increase risk to the brain, heart, and kidney. It can cause coronary heart diseases and stroke when not managed properly. Since the Galaxy Watch Active 2 has just received approval in South Korea, it could take months before it is available in other countries since the company needs approval from local government health agencies and authorities.

Taejong Jay Yang, Corporate SVP and Head of Health Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “The Samsung Health Monitor app has the potential to help millions of people around the world who are affected by high blood pressure. This is one of many examples of how Samsung is integrating its best-in-class hardware with the latest software innovations to innovate mobile experiences.”

I wish Samsung would enable this one feature on all Galaxy S20s

When the Galaxy S20 leaks and rumors first started last year, it had seemed like Samsung would be making only 5G-enabled variants of its new flagship. That was until we learned that LTE variants were in development for some markets, and that’s what happened: Samsung launched the non-5G Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra in many countries, while customers in other countries only have the option of buying the 5G variants.

I live in India, where 5G networks are still a distant dream, so I was perfectly fine with Samsung launching only the LTE variants of the Galaxy S20 series here. Well, that was until I learned that every Galaxy S20, whether it’s the LTE or the 5G variant, comes with an eSIM (embedded SIM) along with two physical SIM slots. And that in some markets, such as Germany, the eSIM and the two physical slots are available for use on the 5G variants.

That isn’t the case for the LTE variants, which come with their eSIM option hidden in most countries. And it’s a bummer in my opinion.

Every Galaxy S20 has an eSIM, but not everyone can use it

First off, the eSIM is a very convenient alternative to a physical SIM card. More importantly, with an eSIM, your phone can be connected to two different carriers and have a microSD card inside for storage expansion. This is impossible when the eSIM isn’t available, because one of the two slots on the physical tray is a hybrid slot that can either accommodate a SIM card or a microSD card.

That’s been true for every Galaxy flagship with dual SIM support, but it doesn’t have to be the case for the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra. But, for some reason, Samsung is keeping the eSIM option disabled on the LTE variants, and that’s an artificial limitation that the company could easily remove with a software update.

Some would argue that physical SIM cards are still much more common and accessible, but since every dual SIM iPhone has an eSIM, every carrier worth its salt already lets you convert your physical SIM into an eSIM. And with Samsung selling so many devices each year, the company could help make the eSIM even more mainstream by adopting it on more of its smartphones, or at least by enabling it for all on devices that already have one inside.

The question is: Will it?

Galaxy XCover Pro for frontline workers now available in the USA

The Galaxy XCover Pro designed for frontline workers is now available on the Verizon Wireless network in the USA. The smartphone originally unveiled in January is equipped with a push-to-talk button and comes pre-loaded with Verizon Push To Talk Plus. The device also integrates with Microsoft tools including Shifts, Tasks, and Praise, and later this year, the dedicated PTT button will allow users to communicate through Microsoft Teams.

The smartphone has NFC capabilities and features from TEEgris, allowing it to double as a mobile point of sale (mPOS) terminal. It also integrates software and hardware solutions from various partners including Infinite Peripherals, KOAMTAC, ProGlove, and Scandit.

User-replaceable battery with 15W fast charging

Unlike the company’s consumer-grade Galaxy smartphones released in recent years, the XCover Pro has a user-removable battery. It has a capacity of 4,050mAh and benefits from 15W fast charging.

Other features include a 6.3-inch FHD+ display, an Exynos 9611 octa-core chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage expandable by up to 512GB via microSD.

The device has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, two programmable keys, NFC, Google AR Core support, Android 10, and is wrapped in an IP67 MIL-STD 816G-certified body.

In its latest announcement, Samsung reveals the Galaxy XCover Pro is dual-SIM ready as far as the hardware goes, however, dual-SIM capabilities will be made available in the USA through an MR (maintenance release) update scheduled for the second half of 2020.

The smartphone is available for purchase online for $499, while retail store distribution via Microsoft, Samsung, and Verizon ‘will begin at a later date.’

Massive Galaxy Fold 2 specs leak reveals S Pen, 120Hz foldable panel

A whole bunch of Galaxy Fold 2 specifications leaked via @DSCCRoss in a series of tweets, revealing quite a lot of details for the cover display, the foldable panel, and other technologies surrounding them. There’s a lot of info to digest, so strap yourselves in.

120Hz foldable display with UTG and no under-display camera

For the Galaxy Fold 2, Samsung is reportedly going to use a similar UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) technology to what was employed by the Galaxy Z Flip. This gives the panel more rigidity and a better, less plasticky feel to the touch. The foldable panel will have a 7.59-inch diagonal, a resolution of 2213 by 1689, and a 120Hz refresh rate like the Galaxy S20 lineup.

While Samsung originally wanted the Galaxy Fold 2 to boast an under-display camera, the recent leak claims the technology isn’t ready yet, so the company will instead go the punch-hole route. It’s still going to be a step up from the notch design marring the original Galaxy Fold’s inner panel.

The source adds that the foldable display will use LTPO backplane technology.

S Pen support included

The Galaxy Fold 2 will have S Pen support, according to the leak, but the source doesn’t exactly specify whether this will be true for the cover or foldable display (or both). It apparently enhances the tablet experience, so the source does suggest that pen input will be available particularly for the interior display.

The issue with foldable panels is that they are a lot less resilient to pressure from pointy objects, and that’s what the tip of an S Pen is. Perhaps Samsung made great strides in UTG technology and the Galaxy Fold 2’s foldable panel will support the S Pen.

A lot of prospective Galaxy Fold customers ultimately skipped the first model but claim to want to buy a Fold as soon as it offers S Pen support. The S Pen seems to be one of the most highly-anticipated additions to this series, so if the Galaxy Fold 2 will indeed offer this feature mentioned in the leak, it will undeniably attract a lot of attention and will push the foldable phone-tablet formula to new heights, distancing Samsung from its competitors even further.

A considerably larger cover display

The original Galaxy Fold’s cover display had a 4.6-inch diagonal but according to leaks, the sequel’s exterior panel will measure 6.23 inches. It will have a resolution of 2267 by 819, LTPS backplane technology, a punch-hole design for the selfie camera, and a 60Hz refresh rate.

The relatively-small cover display was one of the main gripes users had with the Galaxy Fold. It didn’t provide enough functionality to truly be its own thing, but Samsung is reportedly looking to change this with the sequel, which is great! A larger cover display will allow users to perform the usual smartphone tasks without having to unfold the device, reserving the foldable panel for tablet-like experiences.

Exclusive: Samsung TV Plus streaming service is coming to mobile

We have learned through our sources that Samsung intends to bring its TV Plus free streaming service to mobile devices. The company is developing the mobile app to deliver the same functionality available on compatible Smart TVs.

Samsung TV Plus was introduced last year as the company’s free-of-charge streaming service. It is available exclusively through its Smart TVs released in 2016 and later. So far, the company made no mention of a mobile release; however, our sources tell us that the mobile app is now in development.

It may be a Galaxy device exclusive

While any additional information regarding compatibility and availability is not yet known, we suspect the Samsung TV Plus mobile app will be available exclusively for Galaxy devices. After all, Samsung TV Plus is only compatible with the company’s range of Smart TVs and can’t be accessed on TV models from other brands. It’s one of the company’s exclusive features that give it a leg up on the competition.

Similarly, Samsung TV Plus for mobile is likely intended exclusively for Galaxy smartphones (and possibly tablets), but this is just an educated guess based on the company’s handling of the platform thus far. Its more recent tablets including the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite have a slight focus on multimedia experiences, and the addition of TV Plus would seem fitting for the format. Likewise, Samsung’s new flagship smartphones – particularly the Galaxy S20 Ultra – have generous displays fit for a mobile movie-watching experience.

Samsung TV Plus for mobile will offer the same functionality as the service does on Samsung Smart TVs. Users will be able to watch Live channels immediately upon launching the app and they will also be able to access VOD content.

As yet, we don’t have any concrete details regarding a potential release date, but we’ll keep you updated as soon as we learn more.

Samsung may launch the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus 5G in more markets

New information regarding the Galaxy Tab S7 series materialized earlier today, suggesting Samsung is doubling down on its 5G bet and developing another variant of the tablet besides the ones already reported last month. What’s more, while the recent change to the company’s product naming practices prompted speculation that the new flagship tablet may be called the Galaxy Tab S20, akin to the rebranding Samsung’s latest Galaxy S smartphones went through, the Galaxy Tab S20 name is far from confirmed. On the contrary, all of the upcoming model are said to be internally referred to as the Galaxy Tab S7.

The 12.4-inch models SamMobile exclusively discovered last month were dubbed the “Galaxy Tab S7 Plus” subseries as per the same report. With that said, nothing is set in stone and it remains to be seen how exactly will the new tablets be marketed as.

The “Galaxy Tab S20” may still launch as the “Galaxy Tab S7”

Assuming Samsung makes that name official, one particular variant’s moniker will be quite a mouthful, with sources now also reporting the existence of the SM-T976B, aka the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus 5G. Samsung already made the jump to this wireless technology with the Galaxy Tab S6 range, but the 5G-ready version of that slate was released exclusively in South Korea earlier this year. The newly reported product designation, on the other hand, indicates international availability, with the aforementioned model likely being on its way to Europe.

Other variants of the series include the Wi-Fi (SM-T970) and 4G (SM-T975) iterations of the 12.4-inch Galaxy Tab S7 Plus, as well as their Galaxy Tab S7 counterparts (SM-T870 and SM-T875) with 11-inch displays. According to the same source, all of the Galaxy Tab S7 devices will unsurprisingly ship with an S Pen, as has been the case with Samsung’s high-end tablets for years now.

The electronics juggernaut is expected to launch the Galaxy Tab S7 this summer, with recent speculation pointing to a debut either alongside the Galaxy Note 20 or in close proximity to it.

Samsung TV Plus gets four new movie channels in France for free

Samsung Smart TV owners in France now have access to four additional channels for free through the Samsung TV Plus platform. The new channels delivered by Rakuten TV are focused on diversifying the viewer’s cinema experience with comedies, action movies, dramas, and a new Spotlight channel showcasing weekly popular content and exclusive film selections.

Samsung TV Plus has hundreds of thousands of viewers in France

Samsung’s free-of-charge TV Plus platform was released in France in November 2019. According to the company, it has become one of the most popular OTT (over-the-top) services in the country among hundreds of thousands of Samsung Smart TV owners. Including the four new stations, the service now offers a total of 26 channels.

Samsung TV Plus is available on every Smart TV model made by the company since 2016. The service is free; it doesn’t require any additional downloads, credit card information, or external devices to work on eligible devices.

Other popular channels available on Samsung TV Plus in France include Euronews, L’atelier des Chefs, Luxe.tv, Motorsport.tv, and many others. As access to content grows, the best televisions will be defined by their ability to offer an experience more in line with the taste of viewers. Samsung TVs are at the forefront of this change, said Guillaume Rault, Vice President of Consumer Electronics at Samsung France.

Samsung Smart TV owners have also had access to shows like Star Wars since April 7. Not via the TV Plus platform but through The Walt Disney Company’s new subscription-based streaming service Disney Plus.

Key Samsung TV plant in Mexico prolongs coronavirus shutdown

Mere days after Samsung announced a short-term suspension of operations at a key TV factory in Mexico, the company extended the measure by a significant degree. The Tijuana assembly plant was closed in response to the coronavirus outbreak in the country and today’s shutdown extension is unlikely to be its last.

Samsung appears to be monitoring the situation on a daily basis, which illustrates the factory’s importance to its overall television strategy in North America. Its annual output amounts to around 19 million TVs sold across the continent, which is a billion-dollar business for Samsung.

Samsung keen to resume TV operations in Mexico

More specifically, last week’s suspension was only meant to last until today but Samsung has now prolonged plans to reopen the facility until May 3rd. Given how the COVID-19 pandemic is still going strong and Mexico’s northern neighbors have the highest number of reported cases out of any country in the world, this cessation is expected to continue being pushed back. For reference, the Mexican government recently extended the country’s social distancing measures meant to slow down the spread of the pandemic until May 30th, so it’s unlikely non-essential businesses will be opened beforehand.

The closure of the Tijuana plant is the first major curb this facility hit since the turn of the century, when Samsung halted its expansion operations in reaction to the East Asian crisis of 1997. The company’s international rival, LG, announced similar measures for its Mexican TV factory in Reynosa, and has also mimicked Samsung’s extension.

The COVID-19 pandemic already forced Samsung to suspend operations at factories across the world, including the United States, Hungary, India, China, and Brazil.

Samsung accepts the Galaxy S20 Ultra green tint issue, fix coming ASAP

We reported last week that the April 2020 security update for the Galaxy S20 Ultra had brought with it a rather annoying bug. Users had quickly noticed a green tint appear on the display of their device after installing the latest update.

Sources had revealed to us that Samsung had started work on a software fix for the problem and that it would be released soon. In a statement provided to SamMobile, Samsung has acknowledged the issue and confirms that a fix is incoming. It has already removed the update that was causing this problem, it’s no longer available over-the-air or through Samsung’s Smart Switch software.

Samsung to fix the Galaxy S20 Ultra green tint issue soon

“Samsung is aware of the reported issue, which appears in a very limited number of Galaxy S20 Ultra devices. We plan to provide a software update to fix this issue as soon as possible,” the company said in a statement provided to SamMobile. It didn’t say precisely when this update will arrive.

This issue causes a green tint to cover the display in apps when the refresh rate is higher than 60Hz and the brightness was lowered below 30 percent. The majority of the reports about this issue from users came from those who own the Exynos 990 variant of the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

It’s great to have a confirmation from Samsung that it has indeed taken notice of the problem and is working on a fix to address it. Though the number of reports we have seen suggests that it’s more than a “very limited number” of Galaxy S20 Ultra users who have been annoyed by the green tint.

There’s only a temporary fix for this problem until the software update is released. If you don’t want to be annoyed by the green tint on your Galaxy S20 Ultra, just keep the refresh rate at 60Hz. It’s far from an ideal solution but it’s the only solution right now. We’ll let you know when Samsung starts rolling out this software fix for the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Galaxy S20 Ultra exceeding initial sales expectations

Although the cumulative sales figure of the Galaxy S20 series did not match the company’s expectations due to COVID-19 and other issues, the Galaxy S20 Ultra seems to be doing quite well. The highest-end model in the Galaxy S20 series, which is priced at $1,400 for the base variant, is reportedly beating market estimates.

According to a new report from South Korea, it is being estimated that Samsung will sell around 20 million units of the Galaxy S20 series by the end of 2020, which is 40 percent less than the company’s initial expectations. Sales of the Galaxy S20 Ultra were initially expected to be anywhere between 3.5 million and 5.25 million units. However, it is now being estimated that the smartphone will cross 6 million units in sales, which is at least 15 percent more than initial expectations.

Of the revised sales figure of 20 million units, the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and the Galaxy S20 Ultra are expected to sell 6 million, 8 million, and 6 million units, respectively. This is a pleasant surprise for the company as it is managing to sell so many units of such a premium phone. As a downside, suppliers of Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ components are disappointed, while Galaxy S20 Ultra component suppliers are seeing an unexpected upturn in their business.

Despite various issues that have been plaguing the Galaxy S20 Ultra, consumers are investing money in the highest-priced Galaxy S series smartphone ever. Even the Galaxy Z Flip, which is priced similar to the Galaxy S20 Ultra, has received a really good response from experts and users alike.

Samsung Display employees get special permissions to enter Vietnam amid lockdown

Amid COVID-19 restrictions and lockdowns, companies all around the world are facing supply chain-related issues. However, Samsung employees are being given special permission to visit Vietnam. Last month, 700 workers from Samsung Display were allowed to enter Vietnam, and now, some more employees have been granted permission to travel to the country.

According to a new report, nearly 300 workers from Samsung Display have been allowed to travel from South Korea to Vietnam after receiving special entry permissions from the Vietnamese government. Last Friday, a chartered flight carrying 294 employees of the company reached the Van Don International Airport in Quang Ninh Province in the northern part of Vietnam. Two more batches of Samsung Display employees will reportedly arrive in Vietnam in the coming weeks.

Vietnam has prohibited the entry of foreign nationals into the country since March 22 to fight the spread of COVID-19, and the ban will continue until the end of this month. However, it granted special permission to Samsung employees as a significant part of the country’s exports come from the South Korean firm. The company has also pledged to invest $220 million to build an R&D center in Vietnam and offer hundreds of jobs to the locals.

A few days ago, the Vietnamese government had ordered Samsung Display workers to be under quarantine after one of the workers at the factory was tested positive for COVID-19. All 221 workers who were in contact with the virus-infected person tested negative for the deadly virus. The company had shut down parts of the factory, but the production has resumed now.
