Purported Galaxy Note 6 model number list leaks, European model included

While the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge are busy getting the praise and attention they deserve, the rumor mill has been churning out tidbits about Samsung’s next flagship, the Galaxy Note 6. We have heard of a possible early launch with 6GB of RAM and Android N out of the box, and today a list with the model number of the Note 6 for various regions has made its way online.

The Galaxy Note 6 is codenamed Grace, which we have known for some time (the Note 5 was Noble, so you can see the line of thinking with the Note lineup’s codename). The list contains two interesting bits – a European variant is mentioned right at the very bottom, and it seems Samsung will now be using the same model number for all the major US carrier variants. With the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the company has already simplified things by keeping the same model number for all the unlocked variants, and it seems it will take things a step further with the Note 6 later this year.

Purported Galaxy Note 6 model number list leaks, European model included

For those unaware, having similar model numbers across different markets means Samsung can push out updates considerably faster than before instead of making consumers wait for weeks for their turn. We all know how messed up the Korean giant’s software policy is, but things are looking up this year. For example, the first major S7 and S7 edge update arrived in various regions around the world within a week, for both the single and dual-SIM versions.

If this list is accurate (it probably is, though we’re trying to confirm with our sources), the Galaxy Note 6 will also come in a dual-SIM variety in some markets. As we exclusively confirmed, the Note 6 will have IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. It could also feature an iris scanner, and could be powered by the Snapdragon 823 SoC. How much of all this turns out to be true remains to be seen, but with the excellent Note 5 as a base, the next Note flagship might just turn out to be mighty impressive.

Gear VR now has screenshot and video capture; we show you how to find them

We reported back several weeks ago that doing screenshots on Samsung’s Gear VR takes some workaround. At that time though, Samsung had yet to provide software capabilities for screenshots and video recording.

If you’ve been unsatisfied with the workaround, have no fear: Samsung has finally brought screenshot and video capture to the Gear VR within the last several weeks – and you need no longer download a single app or unlock any hidden features. To find the Gear VR screenshot and video capture settings, perform the following steps:

  • Once you arrive at your app screen in Gear VR, you need only long press the back button found on the right side of the headset. You can find it right above the navigation controls that appear as a “plus” sign (+) with a hole in the intersection.
  • You should hold the back button until you see a menu with the volume, brightness, battery percentage, and other settings appear. This is your Gear VR settings menu.
  • You won’t find the screenshot and video capabilities at the forefront of your Gear VR settings, though, so you’ll need to select the “utilities” icon, which you can find in a circle to the right of the settings screen. The utilities icon features a wrench and screwdriver that are on top of each other, just below the settings icon (which looks like the same settings icon you’ll find at the top of Samsung’s familiar TouchWiz layout.

I’ve attached two photos below, one of the original settings and the other of the screenshot and video recording capabilities that are buried beneath other settings such as the passthrough camera, Do Not Disturb, brightness, and so on. These screenshots are not clear or aesthetically appealing, but they’re provided to prove that these capabilities have now been added to Gear VR.

Gear VR settings screenshot video record

Before you celebrate and go off to screenshot everything in Gear VR, you should know that you still can’t screenshot settings, for example: I had to use the Galaxy S6 Active to capture Gear VR settings by placing the device against Gear VR in the same location that you’d place your nose and eyes when using the device. Next, you must visit your utility settings, then wait for eye detection to kick in before you screenshot a game scene. Finally, you can only screenshot and video record in certain apps, such as game apps. I tried to screenshot and video record in the Flickr VR app, but these capabilities were disabled within it.

After you take off the Gear VR headset, you can access your screenshots in a separate album from your screenshots taken on the phone. You may even see two “screenshots” sections in your albums if you’re a screenshooter who’s always capturing something on-screen.

We’d like to see Samsung provide voice commands (“capture,” for instance) for Gear VR, in the same way Samsung has provided voice commands (“capture, cheese, shoot,” etc.) for its Galaxy smartphones. But we’re excited Samsung has added these capabilities, and we hope to see Samsung continue to improve Gear VR.

Have you used screenshot and video capture in Gear VR? Are there any specific moments in which you’ve found them necessary? What capabilities would you like to see Samsung add to Gear VR?

Samsung releases Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 4 in India

Samsung has finally released the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the Galaxy Note 4 in India. It started rolling out the update internationally for this handset less than a week ago so it was only a matter of time before it went live in the country. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 4 comes in at just over 1.4GB so it will be wise to download it over a good Wi-Fi connection.

The update brings the new TouchWiz experience that provides enhanced usability and an updated visual design. All features that are part and parcel of Marshmallow are included in today’s update, which also comes bearing the March security patch. New features include Google Now on Tap, improved notifications experience, better app permissions and more. Galaxy Note 4 owners in India should soon see the update notification pop up on their handsets if they haven’t already received it.

Themes Thursday: Top 10 Galaxy Themes from this week!

Welcome back to Themes Thursday! Last week we featured six out of 82 themes that were released in the Theme Store. Samsung has released 50 themes this week, and we’ve selected the best ten of the lot.

Material UI design fans should consider the Blux and Britzer themes. If you want to use a black theme to save battery on your Galaxy smartphone, have a look at the Minimal theme. If you want a bit more color added to a black theme, consider Nix UI. We quite liked the Dot Notes theme, particularly because of its pastel colors and the sweet clock widget on its lock screen.

Sweet Honeycomb, San Francisco, and [FEIT] Peaceful Forest themes are quite good-looking as well. Which theme did you like the most?

Samsung engineers explain the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge cooling system

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge aren’t the first smartphones to feature a liquid-based cooling solution, but Samsung’s latest flagships do carry out the cooling procedure in the smallest such setup seen on a mobile device. That’s just one interesting nugget the company’s engineers have shared in Samsung’s latest post about what makes the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge so special.

Samsung highlighted the thermal cooling solution on the S7 lineup at the devices’ announcement, and it is now sharing what makes the solution stand out. The heat pipe on the S7 and S7 edge is only 0.4 mm in diameter, making it the smallest yet on a smartphone. The heat pipe – or the thermal spreader – “uses changes in the phases of water to radiate heat.” The water inside the solution absorbs the heat produced by the device and turns into steam, which is then dissipated via the heat pipe.

This steam then turns back into water, and in turns fuels the constant heat dissipation process. As the post explains, the physical cooling system works hand in hand with software algorithms to keep the S7 and S7 edge running cool. It is rather interesting to see how it all goes down inside devices that are so small and compact. The source link has the full rundown, so go ahead and find out how those powerful chipsets inside the S7 and S7 edge are kept in check.

Gear Manager for iOS leaked online

It was back in December last year that we exclusively revealed that Samsung was working on Gear Manager for iOS. This app will allow the Gear S2 smartwatch to work with an iPhone. Samsung confirmed in January this year that the Gear S2 will soon get support for iOS but it didn’t provide a confirmed date. A few weeks ago it was reported that support will arrive by the end of March but that didn’t happen. Now there’s a big indication that the Gear S2 iOS support just might arrive in the near future.

We’re received what appears to be the leaked Gear Manager for iOS app. The leaked .ipa app file is a big indication that the app will soon be officially available from the App Store. In case you’ve never used an iPhone before it’s not possible to sideload an app as easily as you can on Android so you’re pretty much out of luck if you don’t have a jailbroken iPhone. Even if you do have a jailbroken iPhone it’s not recommended to sideload apps that come from unofficial sources, so bear in mind that should you decide to tinker with it you do so at your own risk. Just keep your fingers crossed if you can’t wait to use your Gear S2 with an iPhone, it may not be long before this becomes official.

Samsung launches Milk Music in China

Samsung might be shutting down Milk Music in some markets but it doesn’t appear to be completely out of the game just yet. The company has actually launched Milk Music in China. It brings local content to the fore with over one million tracks and enhanced discovery features which help users find fresh new content to listen to.

Milk Music for China gets a concentric dial design complete with translucent background effects, even the background color of the player changes to match the album art. Aside from a library of tracks that can be streamed Milk Music also provides access to streaming radio stations. Much of the content is local right now but music from international stars could arrive later on. Milk Music has only been released for the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S7 edge and the A9 Pro in China right now but more devices will get the service soon.
