Samsung launches the Galaxy S7 Asiana in South Korea

In a unique partnership, Samsung has teamed up with SK Telecom and Asiana Airlines to churn out a special edition of the Galaxy S7 in its home country. The company has unveiled the Galaxy S7 Asiana in South Korea. The new variant is exactly similar to the Galaxy S7 but comes with a special Asiana-themed UI, boot and shutdown animations, and a pre-loaded app that lets users search for Asiana flights and book tickets.

The company has also mentioned that Asiana customers can use their Asiana miles to discount the phone’s price even further. Those who buy the Galaxy S7 Asiana from the airline’s website would be eligible to receive a wireless charger and a 32GB microSD card for free. Samsung had launched an Iron Man-themed Galaxy S6 edge, Avengers-themed accessories for the Galaxy S6, and an Ant Man-themed Galaxy S6 edge+ last year.

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) reaching T-Mobile shelves soon

A new leaked internal document has revealed the imminent arrival of the Galaxy J7 (2016) on T-Mobile’s network later this month. The document reveals that the handset will arrive on the 18th of May, meaning that we’re still more than a week away from its release.

This document is sent out to the T-Mobile team in order to prepare for the launch of the device. We can see instructions on how to showcase the features of the handset and prepare for the launch. So clearly, this comes directly from an internal T-Mobile source, making this legitimate information.

But as is the case with leaks, we can never be 100%, so we suggest you treat this as a leak until the carrier makes things official. The Galaxy J7 comes with a 5.5-inch 720p display, an octa-core 1.6 GHz Exynos 7870 SoC, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage (expandable), a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front camera with an LED flash, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and a 3,300 mAh battery.

Samsung updates Good Lock, brings more customization control

Good Lock is one of those new projects by Samsung that you either love or hate, and its vanilla Android look and feel has some Samsung faithful uninstalling it. Others can’t get enough of Good Lock, but, either way, Samsung’s new project seems to produce polarizing thoughts about where Samsung is headed with it. Polarizing companies are loved when they’re hated and hated when they’re loved, and that seems to be the mark of good software and apps as well.

Samsung has updated Good Lock before, with the company bringing bug fixes to fix some earlier issues — even going so far as to add a card style recents menu (which was one of the sticky points of the app before the update). Now, just one month later, the Korean giant is back with a new Good Lock update that’s sure to give users even more customization over how they choose to rock Samsung’s new lock screen.

The latest update brings Good Lock to version 24.0.8 and lets you “delete all” in the card-style recents menu, enable or disable the app tray in recent apps, greater status icon visibility, adding Mobile Data in Quick Settings, and so on. Samsung has also fixed a number of problems pertaining to repeat low battery notifications, lock screen issues when in calls, Bluetooth battery performance, lock screen effect performance, and more. You can find the new update changelog below. Those who were wishing for a disable option so as to continue flirting with the new lock screen will be disappointed, however.

If you’re a huge fan of Good Lock and want to take the new update, head on over to the APK Download file below and get your taste of Samsung’s latest. Want to know what to expect before giving the new lock screen a spin? You can always read our Good Lock app review.

What do you think of the new changes? Love them or hate them? Have any ideas of your own?

The Samsung Slider gives sports spectators a view of the entire pitch in real-time

One of the most frustrating things about attending a rugby game is not being able to see what’s going on when all of the action is taking place at the other end of the pitch. Sure, you can look at one of the massive displays, but, understandably, it’s not as good as having the events unfold right in front of your eyes. However, Samsung’s hoping to make that an issue of the past with its new “Slider” seats, which will make their debut at the Rugby World Series matches in London later this month.

As can be seen in the image above, the Slider is essentially a carriage that consists of four luxurious race-like bucket seats, complete with seatbelts. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably asking yourself: “Why are harnesses required at a rugby game?” Well, it’s because the Slider’s mounted to a track on the side of the pitch; enabling the chairs to move up and down the field at speeds of up to 20mph — so spectators can quite literally follow the game as it’s in-play.

Sounds pretty awesome, huh? I think so, too. Unfortunately, the only way to experience the Slider is to win a competition that requires you to have purchased a qualifying Samsung TV, Wireless Audio 360 Speaker or Multiroom Soundbar between 1st January to 14th May 2016. If you meet this criterion, you’ll need to head over to Samsung’s website, complete the entry form and hope for the best.

Samsung Galaxy S5 mini and the Galaxy J3 (2016) getting Marshmallow soon

Samsung recently took the wraps off the Galaxy J3 (2016) [our review here] for international markets, the device was also launched in the U.S. via Verizon WirelessAT&T and a couple of prepaid carriers. While the American models featured Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, some regions had to make do with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Well, it seems like the company is on course to fix that with the Galaxy J3 (2016) said to be getting Marshmallow update very soon.

The handset is already sold with Marshmallow on board in some regions like South Korea (in addition to the U.S.), so a global update shouldn’t be far away. In what has come as a surprise to many, the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini is also about to receive an update to the latest version of Android. The update has already been spotted at the Wi-Fi Alliance, which is an indication that of things to come. The Galaxy S5 mini last saw the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update in 2015, so it’s been a long wait for the customers.

Samsung ties up with Paytm in India to open its online brand store

Samsung has been trying to find a right balance between online and offline sales of its devices in India. The company recently started localising e-commerce order delivery, installation, and collection of payment for cash-on-delivery orders through authorized distributors. Now, the company has tied up with Indian e-commerce marketplace Paytm to open its online brand store in the country.

After working with major online marketplaces Flipkart, Amazon, and Snapdeal, Samsung has now tied up with Paytm according to a report from The Economic Times. Samsung can now open an independent online brand store on Paytm where it can control the sellers, inventory, pricing, and promotions of its products. The South Korean electronics giant can also run promotional campaigns and tag its brick-and-mortar stores, which would enable the company in generating enough sales for their offline channel through this online store.

Wazir Advisors’ founder and managing director Harminder Sahni said: “Marketplaces are like stores. Brands are realising there is no reason to have another retailer in between for their online presence. The real benefit is when there is no one in between. Even from the regulatory point of view, with marketplaces not allowed to control prices, this move falls in line.”  Going hyperlocal would give Samsung greater control over online sales of its products and a chance to maintain a good relationship with conventional distributors, dealers, and store owners while having a good online presence at the same time.

Latest Verizon update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge adds a new service that installs bloatware

Verizon confirmed a couple of days ago that it’s releasing a new over-the-air update for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. The minor update was supposed to bring tweaks and improvements for the two flagship smartphones aside from the latest security patches. The changelog didn’t mention this but the update also adds a new service called DT Ignite that enables the carrier to quietly install bloatware on users’ handsets.

DT Ignite has made the news in the past as well. In December 2014, many T-Mobile and Verizon customers discovered that deleted carrier bloatware apps would reinstall as the service has been designed to download carrier apps once a device has been activated, reset, updated or has even been put through a factory reset. Many Verizon users would not like the fact that their carrier can quietly install bloatware on their phones even if the app installs don’t count against the mobile data cap. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to disable DT Ignite, users have to locate the service in the app list and disable it from there. They may have to enable the Show system apps option under the More option to see DT Ignite in the list.

Samsung’s next Tizen smartphone could have a 4-inch display

The Samsung Z1 was the company’s first commercial Tizen smartphone and it performed quite nicely in the market. Samsung followed up with the Z3 in under one year and we recently reported exclusively that Samsung is working on a slightly upgraded version of the Z1, and that an entirely new handset is being developed as well. The new handset is the Samsung Z2 bearing model number SM-Z200F.

Samsung is already working on the handset’s firmware, the phone is being made for the Indian market and even though not much is known about its specifications we do know that it’s going to support 4G LTE. An import tracker shows that the SM-Z200F units being tested by Samsung have a 4-inch display which seems quite plausible as Samsung hasn’t really started making Tizen smartphones with massive displays. The Samsung Z2 could arrive at some point this year, it may be launched in other developing markets after it’s introduced in India.

Import listing hints at 5.5-inch display for the Galaxy A4

We reported recently that the Galaxy A lineup could soon be expanded with a new model as Indian import database Zauba revealed that a handset with model number SM-A430 was imported into India for testing. The listing offered no details about the device itself so it’s unclear at this point in time whether it will have high-end or mid-range specs. However, it appears that this handset will come with a 5.5-inch display.

A new listing has been spotted on the import tracker and it mentions that the SM-A430 has a 5.5-inch display. The pixel resolution is not mentioned but one would expect it to at least be a Full HD display. We’re still waiting to hear more about the specifications of this handset, there aren’t a lot of details available about the Galaxy A4 at this point in time, but we’ll get them soon enough. It’s unclear when and in which markets Samsung is looking to launch the Galaxy A4 first.

Samsung takes fourth place in foundry market

In the latest foundry rankings compiled by market research firm IC Insights and Gartner, Samsung has taken the fourth position with American and Taiwanese companies occupying the top three positions. The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co or TSMC retained its first place on the list with US-based Globalfoundries coming in second place. Taiwan’s UMC is in third place.

The data shows that TSMC’s sales reached $19.9 billion as it accounted for 54.3 percent of the market, almost 5.8 times higher than Samsung’s total sales which came in at $3.4 billion and gave it a market share of just 5.3 percent. TSMC is a specialist foundry without its own design, the company also produces a significant amount of processors for Apple while Samsung only does that for its main rival on a consignment basis. Samsung’s position in the global foundry market could improve in the future as it brings in more clients, being the sole manufacturer of Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor will certainly reflect positively on its balance sheets.

Samsung accelerating partnerships to take leadership in VR market

Samsung is heavily invested in virtual reality and from the looks of it the company doesn’t really want to waste any time in establishing its leadership in the VR market. It’s accelerating partnerships with leading companies across the globe for this purpose, companies that are also interested in VR and are thus working with Samsung on this relatively new technology for consumers.

Samsung has inked partnerships with Facebook and Everland. It established a Gear VR Adventure room at Everland in Yongin on April 24. The 4D simulator room had 20 seats in which visitors could experience T Express and Horror Maze, two of the most popular rides at Everland, using images captured with Samsung’s Gear 360 Camera. The partnership with Facebook was announced earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress, Facebook-owned Oculus has worked with Samsung to develop the Gear VR headset, and Samsung provided several thousand Gear VR units to developers who attended Facebook’s F8 conference.

Galaxy C5 pictures leaked yet again

If you haven’t had enough of looking at the Galaxy C5 then you’re going to like the fact that pictures of this upcoming mid-range device from Samsung have been leaked yet again. The first batch was leaked about a week ago and confirmed that the Galaxy C5 does come with a metal body, and the second batch arrived the very next day.

These latest leaked pictures of the Galaxy C5 show off the device in all its glory. It’s a Samsung smartphone through and through with several design elements that attest to this at just a glance. Underneath the metal body, there will be a Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor with 4GB RAM, a 5.2-inch Full HD display and Android 6.0.1. Given the pace of these leaks, it appears that a formal announcement may not be that far off, Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy C5 in China initially.
