Galaxy M42 5G could debut in India later this month

Samsung is expected to launch a lot of 5G smartphones in India this year, despite the country not having any 5G network. And it looks like the Galaxy M42 5G could be the company’s first mid-range 5G smartphone for the Indian market. The phone was leaked multiple times over the past six months, and it looks like the company is finally ready to launch it in India.

According to the latest information, Samsung could introduce the Galaxy M42 5G in India later this month. It is almost confirmed that the phone will use the Snapdragon 750G processor, similar to the Galaxy A42 5G. The phone is also expected to feature a large Super AMOLED display, a 64MP quad-camera setup, 128GB internal storage, and a 6,000mAh battery.

Galaxy M42 5G expected specs

Since the phone is expected to be a rebranded version of the Galaxy A42 5G, which was launched late last year, we expect the phone to feature a 6.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED display, 4GB/6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, a microSD card slot, and Android 11 out of the box. At the front, it could have a 20MP selfie camera. It could feature a quad-camera setup at the rear, including a 48MP wide-angle camera, an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP macro camera.

Other features of the phone could include an in-display fingerprint reader, GPS, Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, a USB Type-C port, and 15W fast charging. Since the Galaxy M12 already features a high-refresh-rate display, Samsung could throw in a high-refresh-rate display for the Galaxy M42 5G as well. The company is also expected to launch the Galaxy M62 5G in India later this year.

Samsung’s iTest web app shows iPhone users what they’re missing out on

A recently released report showed that nine out of ten teens in the US are iPhone users, and 90% of them plan to upgrade to a new iPhone. Samsung is trying to change that and turn at least some iPhone users into Galaxy owners. To that effect, Samsung has released a web app that simulates the Galaxy experience.

The South Korean firm’s iTest web app offers everyone a chance to experience how it feels to use a Galaxy device. When iPhone users visit this website, they are prompted to add the web app to their home screen. Opening the app greets users with the message “You’re about to get a little taste of Samsung, without changing phones. We can’t replicate every function, but you should quickly see that there’s nothing daunting about switching to the other side.

Samsung actually nailed the whole experience of replicating a Galaxy smartphone’s One UI interface via a web app. It lets you browse the home screen, the app launcher, the messaging and calling apps, changing the theme, browsing the Galaxy Store, using the camera app, and more. Moreover, when you browse the Galaxy Store, its main banner promotes Fortnite, a massively popular online game that is banned on Apple’s App Store.

The app even emulates you receiving various text messages, notifications, and calls, highlighting the difference between using an iPhone and a Galaxy smartphone. The company also promotes the Galaxy Watch 3, Galaxy Buds Pro, and Galaxy Buds Live, because why not? However, a lot of apps only show the splash screen, because iTest is a web app after all, and it has its limitations. However, it gets the job done of showing an iPhone user how it’s like to use a Galaxy smartphone.

Right now, the app is only being promoted in New Zealand, but the website is accessible from anywhere in the world. It may not be long before Samsung turns this into a massive ad campaign to turn some iPhone loyalists into Galaxy users.

This is why your Galaxy phone doesn’t have iMessage

An Android version of iMessage is never going to happen; this might seem obvious now but it wasn’t a given ten years ago. And thanks to the ongoing legal drama between Epic Games and the iPhone maker, we got to hear some pretty interesting insight on the matter from people directly involved into the decision not to port iMessage to Samsung Galaxy devices or any other part of the Android ecosystem.

The closest we’ve ever gotten to an Android port of iMessage was back in 2013, the year Apple decided not to entertain that idea any longer. If that outcome made you go “duh”, you might be surprised how much thought Apple has given to that possibility. At least according to its former employees interviewed and/or deposed by Epic legal counsel in preparation for the ongoing trial over App Store practices.

Can anyone force Apple to port iMessage to Android?

Eddy Cue, Apple SVP of Software and Services, is on record as stating that there are no technological barriers to porting iMessage to Android, having said as much in a recent deposition. Craig Federighi, the head of iOS, echoed that sentiment on a similar occasion, telling attorneys there are no long-term advantages to Android development from Apple’s point of view.

The lack of a unified messaging experience outside of Apple’s ecosystem is a significant “obstacle” to leaving it, Federighi acknowledged. And he wasted no breath pretending like that’s a problem Apple intends to even feign interest in, let alone solve it.

The more consolidated the smartphone industry gets, the more that stance makes sense. In that way, Epic is fighting a losing battle by trying to sue Apple into opening iOS to software vendors. Whether Samsung can learn something from the situation is debatable, but what’s not is that iMessage is never making its way to any Android device, Galaxy-branded or not.

Recycled Galaxy flagships are taking on blindness in Asia

Three and a half years in, the Galaxy Upcycling initiative is still going strong. In fact, it’s getting more fascinating by the day. Cue this week’s story from the Far East, where Samsung successfully repurposed a bunch of its old flagships with the express purpose of fighting blindness and other comparably severe ophthalmology diseases.

The resulting technology is called the EYELIKE Platform and has already been successfully tested in a variety of rural locales across Asia, from Papua New Guinea to Vietnam and India. Successful experiments have even been carried out in Morocco.

It’s all about accessibility

While the idea for the Galaxy Upcycling program has first been coined back in 2017, it wasn’t until last year that Samsung moved into the realization phase. The EYELIKE Platform is one of its first major achievements on this quest to improve the overall quality of life in the 21st century. It was pursued due to the fact that vision impairment is one today’s most omnipresent medical conditions. The majority of eye disease cases are also entirely preventable, making this problem a good fit for the Galaxy Upcycling effort to tackle.

According to WHO, there is a billion of visually impaired people today who could have avoided their conditions if they were diagnosed in time. On a global level, this makes eye disease a tech accessibility problem more so than a medical one. The EYELIKE Fundus handheld camera is the next step toward addressing that situation for good. It’s far from the only step toward a sustainable future that Samsung’s been taking lately.

Samsung isn’t shaking up its foldable lineup at all this year

With the Galaxy S21 launch out of the way, all eyes are now on Samsung to unveil its new foldable devices. Even though the Galaxy Z Flip was unveiled alongside the Galaxy S20 last year, Samsung decided unveiling it early on in 2021.

It’s now expected that both the Galaxy Z Flip 2 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be unveiled in the second half of this year. There have also been rumors that Samsung could shake up its foldable lineup this year with brand new models. That isn’t happening.

No brand new foldables from Samsung are coming

From what we hear, Samsung is only going to launch the successors to its existing foldable phones. The much-rumored Galaxy Z Fold Lite isn’t on the agenda for this year. Such a model would have lowered the price point for Samsung’s foldable. While the company may still be considering a future launch of a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold, it’s not going to do that in 2021.

A recent rumor also claimed that Samsung has been secretly working on a double-fold Galaxy foldable smartphone. It was even claimed that this new model would be released before the end of this year. While there’s plenty of circumstantial evidence to support the bi-fold phone theory, there’s little chance of Samsung actually launching the device this year.

We’re only going to get two foldables from Samsung in 2021. The Galaxy Z Flip 2 and the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It would have been nice to see the lineup expand further, especially in the absence of a new Galaxy Note device.

Perhaps the reasons for which the Galaxy Note 21 got killed off are preventing Samsung from launching as many as four foldable phones in 2021. That just gives us more to look forward to in the future.

Another affordable Galaxy tablet from Samsung moves closer to launch

There has been a huge rise in demand for laptops and tablets since the COVID-19 pandemic, and Samsung turned out to be the second-biggest tablet vendor globally in 2020. To capitalize on this rise in demand, the company is preparing two more affordable tablets—Galaxy Tab A7 Lite and Galaxy Tab S7 Lite—and is expected to launch them over the next couple of months.

The Galaxy Tab A7 Lite was first revealed two months ago. It received certification from the Bluetooth SIG last month and then its first image was leaked. Now, Samsung has confirmed the existence of the tablet by publishing a dedicated support webpage for the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (SM-T225) on its Russian website. It also means that the tablet will be launched in Russia very soon.

Going by previous leaks, the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite will feature an 8.4-inch IPS LCD screen with Full HD resolution and a metal body. It reportedly comes equipped with a MediaTek Helio P22T octa-core processor, 3GB RAM, and 32GB internal storage. We can expect it to feature a microSD card slot for storage space expansion. It also features Bluetooth 5.0, a USB Type-C port, and a 5,100mAh battery with 15W fast charging.

Samsung might officially unveil the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite alongside the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite, which has a 12.4-inch IPS LCD screen, a Snapdragon 750G processor, 4G RAM, and a 5G variant. Both tablets are expected to debut with Android 11 onboard and receive at least two major Android OS updates in the future.
