Samsung’s Gear S2 transcends the luxury watch; here’s why

The Gear S2 is a popular smartwatch, as Best Buy and Amazon sales show us for Q4 2015, and the Korean giant behind “the next big thing” in the smartwatch market is thrilled. At CES 2016, Samsung pushed forward with the smartwatch that’s got everyone talking about the future of smartwatches, with 18K Rose Gold and Platinum Gear S2 models on their way in February.

With all the “bling” of the new smartwatches, though, an old question rises to the surface: Is the Gear S2 a luxury watch? Some believe it to be a luxury watch, while some of my fellow tech enthusiasts think that the Gear S2, whatever great heights it reaches, will never be a luxury watch. The reason behind the critical mindset is simple: luxury watches have a brand name, like “Rolex” or “TAG Heuer” and last longer than smartwatches will last. This doesn’t even take into account the price of those watches, which range in the $5000-$10000 and up price point. These same individuals don’t see smartwatches ever coming close to what luxury watches are. Even if TAG Heuer does have a Connected Carrera Android Wear smartwatch, it will never reach the fame that TAG Heuer’s luxury watches have reached. Its $1500 price point, a bit budget-friendly for TAG Heuer, doesn’t help the matter, some say.

The traditional view (that luxury watches are better) is understandable, though controversial, and Samsung has its own answer. Many have, in the last four months since the Korean giant’s Gear S2 announcement, stated that the Gear S2 is aiming to be a luxury watch. Many watched Samsung’s recent CES 2016 announcement regarding the Rose Gold and Platinum Gear S2 models and assume that Samsung is aiming to create a luxury watch: “the new build materials and bling say it all,” according to some. And yet, Samsung never said its Gear S2 was a luxury smartwatch. Here’s Samsung’s statement from Younghee Lee on the luxury watch/smartwatch debate from the company’s September 2015 Gear S2 announcement:

The Samsung philosophy is to push forward, embracing new adventures and exploring the farthest frontiers of technology. Two years ago, we introduced the first Gear and we wanted to create a new wearable movement. We learned a lot along the way. From the start, we’ve known that our goal wasn’t to replicate a luxury watch. We wanted to transcend that idea and bring you an advanced, smart wearable device that becomes a meaningful part of your life. (Younghee Lee, Samsung Gear S2 Showcase: Keynote, 1:34-2:20)

In other words, Samsung’s take on the luxury watch vs. smartwatch debate is that the luxury watch isn’t as grand as some assert, that the Gear S2 (and the smartwatch in general) “transcends the idea” of the luxury watch and is better.

Some could say that Samsung is only saying this to sell the Gear S2, but I happen to agree with the Korean giant. When I go out and meet friends who have luxury, “dumb” watches with $5,000+ price tags and can only look at their watch and tell time, I don’t feel threatened by their luxury watches – but my Gear S2 should threaten their luxury watches. After all, I have notifications, emails, calls, texts, and an array of capabilities I have with my circular smartwatch that their “luxury” watch will never have. And the best part is that I didn’t spend $15,000 and $20,000 to get that state-of-the-art tech feel that will become the trending wave of the future. Nope; for a fraction of the price, I’m already miles ahead of the luxury watch crowd.

Somewhere along the way, someone decided that smartwatches such as the Gear S2 are the “new kid on the block” that can’t hang with the “Big Boy” luxury watches. The only problem with this claim is that luxury watch advocates have yet to prove to me or anyone else why their luxury watches are better. The Gear S2 is to the luxury watch what the smart car is to the BMW, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz brands: the smart car is so advanced it doesn’t even need a brand to outperform the luxury, normal vehicles – but the brand name only adds to its distinctiveness. Normal is just normal, no matter if it has “luxury” in front of it or not. Ultimately, good looks aren’t everything and if that’s what luxury watches excel at, I pity the future of luxury watches.

The Gear S2 in 18k Rose Gold and Platinum goes on sale in the US tomorrow

Samsung launched two new editions of the Gear S2 Classic at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 last month. Two weeks ago Samsung announced that it was launching the Gear S2 Classic in 18k Rose Gold and Platinum globally and since then the new editions have gradually been released in multiple markets across the globe. Samsung has just confirmed that the Gear S2 Classic in 18k Rose Gold and Platinum will go on sale in the United States tomorrow.

Both editions will retail for $449.99 and will be available at Samsung.com, Amazon, Best Buy, Macy’s and other participating retailers in the United States. The 18k Rose Gold edition is paired with an Ivory leather band while the Platinum edition comes with a Black leather band. Everything else remains the same so if you aren’t interested in the new finishes you can get the same Gear S2 Classic in stainless steel for $349.99.

Samsung has a plethora of phones and tablets in its lineup, and regularly releases firmware updates for various devices. These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. Software updates for Samsung devices roll out in various regions every day, and you can find out which firmware updates were pushed out by the company over the last 24 hours through our firmware list.

As usual, you can download each of these firmware from our firmware section (simply enter your device’s model number to view all firmware for that device) in order to update to a new firmware manually, or as a means to return to your phone or tablet’s stock software.

Themes Thursday: Here are a few good themes released this week

Themes Thursday is back! Samsung has released no less than 27 themes in its Theme Store this week, and that’s more than double of what they released last week. Most of the themes released this week are paid, with only five of them being free to install.

We quite liked the Flix Black, the Shooting Dark Star, and the White Fairy _MINDON design themes. The Chalie Pub (Live) gives you an old-school vibe, while the Along The Romance, Cesky Krumlov shows the 17th century architecture from Czech Republic.

You can also have a look at a few Valentine’s Day themes in the Theme Store on your compatible Galaxy device. By the way, did you download those amazing abstract wallpapers which were featured in this week’s Wallpaper Wednesday?

Samsung Pay coming to the UK and Spain alongside the Galaxy S7

After Apple Pay was launched in the UK in July 2015, Samsung is trying to counter it by launching its own mobile payments solution in the country. At the company’s recently held European Forum 2016, an executive from the company mentioned a possible time frame for the launch of Samsung Pay in the UK and Spain.

Nathalie Oestmann, who heads Samsung Pay in Europe, announced on stage that the company’s mobile payments system will be “coming to the UK and Spain very soon this year“. The exact date? “More details [will follow] at MWC [Mobile World Congress] in a few weeks time“.

We might get to know the exact date for the launch of Samsung Pay in Spain and the UK during the unveiling of the Galaxy S7 duo on February 21. This falls in line with our exclusive report where we said these countries would get the service in the first quarter of 2016.

Samsung Pay works with the Galaxy Note 5, the Galaxy S6 edge+, the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy A5 (2016), the Galaxy A7 (2016), and the Galaxy A9. The South Korean smartphone giant’s mobile payment tech is already available in the US and South Korea. The service supports gift cards, and support for online shopping will be added soon.

The company will, no doubt, include Samsung Pay in the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. Unlike Apple Pay and Android Pay, which only work with NFC compatible point-of-sale equipments, Samsung Pay works anywhere a normal debit or credit card works. The technology will be introduced in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore later this year.

Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge pre-orders to go live on February 21, free Gear VR included

The folks over at Android World are reporting that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will go up for pre-order in the Netherlands right on launch day, February 21st. It’s not the first time pre-orders will begin on the day a Samsung flagship will go official – the same happened with the Note 5 and S6 edge+ in the US (well, it happened a day later for those two devices), and we have seen third-party retailers and even Samsung in the Netherlands start pre-orders soon after unveiling a device. The same will be the case for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge according to the site.

Samsung will also be giving away a free Gear VR to everyone who pre-orders either of the two phones between February 21 and March 10 and signs up on the company’s official site. That’s good news, though Android World also says only the 32GB model of the S7 and S7 edge will be available in the country. Perhaps that isn’t something we should be unhappy about, as the microSD slot is making a return and should allow users to extend their phone’s storage by up to 128GB. It’s always good to have as much internal storage as possible though, so maybe Samsung will consider launching the 64GB variant sometime down the line.

A March 11 availability date is also mentioned, which has already been rumored a couple of times in recent weeks. All in all, it doesn’t look like we will have to wait long before the Galaxy S7 and its larger curved sibling become available for sale after the Unpacked event.

Samsung catching up to Apple in the US smartphone market

Latest research from Parks Associates shows that Apple remains the dominant smartphone manufacturer in the United States but Samsung is catching up to it. The Cupertino-based company controls 40% of the country’s smartphone market while Samsung is in second place with 31%. The report shows that Android OEMs are gaining ground on Apple’s home turf and are likely to maintain this momentum going forward.

With its 31% share of the country’s smartphone market Samsung is currently the dominant Android OEM in the United States, followed by LG which commands a 10% market share. Other OEMs like Motorola and HTC account for about 5% of the market combined. Despite being the single largest smartphone vendor in the country Apple still loses out to Android in the platform wars as it accounts for almost 60% of the entire US smartphone market. As far as the global market is concerned Samsung remained the leader in global smartphone shipments last year with 324.8 million units shipped. Apple came in second place with 231.5 million units.
