Samsung confirms the Galaxy Fold has sold over a million units

Much has been said about the Galaxy Fold’s $2,000 price when the handset was first unveiled. Then the whole delay debacle happened and Samsung relaunched the phone with fixes at the same price tag. Many of the company’s detractors thought that Samsung was being delusional.

However, the market responded positively. The Galaxy Fold would quickly sell out whenever it launched in a new market. Earlier estimates had suggested that more than 500,000 units had been sold. Samsung has officially confirmed now that it has in fact sold more than one million units of the Galaxy Fold. That’s an impressive achievement for a first-generation device that requires special care.

One million people bought a $2,000 phone

Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt Berlin, Samsung Electronic’s President Young Sohn confirmed that Samsung has sold more than one million Galaxy Fold smartphones across the globe. “There’s a million people that want to use this product at $2,000,” he added.

Sohn made this revelation during a conversation about pursuing growth through innovation. He was explaining the company’s process of releasing products to gain feedback. It goes without saying that the Galaxy Fold’s launch has provided Samsung with valuable input which will help it develop its foldable smartphone strategy for the future.

His comments clearly indicate the experimental nature of the Galaxy Fold and the response from the market is evidence that people are looking for innovation in the smartphone market. It also gives confidence to Samsung as it now knows that customers will be more receptive to a foldable smartphone that’s even cheaper.

Samsung is aiming to sell 6 million foldable smartphones next year. It could very well achieve that if the price was brought down so that it became attainable for more people. Samsung now has a clamshell Galaxy Fold in the pipeline.

It’s expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S11 in February 2020. Reports suggest that it’s going to cost $850. Samsung may very well find a couple of million customers for the new Galaxy Fold at that price point if sales of the first-gen Galaxy Fold are any indication.

Galaxy Fold / W20 5G sells out in China in mere minutes, surprising no one

The Galaxy Fold has taken another small victory, this time in China, where the so-called Samsung W20 5G sold out in a flash. Unveiled last month as a slightly modified version of the Galaxy Fold, the W20 5G went on sale in China today via Samsung’s online store and partner retailer JD, but it didn’t take long before stocks depleted.

China’s exclusive Galaxy Fold boasting a white back panel and slight design changes to the metal frame went on sale for CNY 19,999 ($2,850), or roughly $700 more compared to most other markets. This didn’t stop buyers from picking up the device like it was going out of style.

Samsung W20 5G stocks will replenish next week

Although it is impressive to see how well the Galaxy Fold / W20 5G seemingly performs on the market, it’s important to keep in mind that the device was sold in China in limited quantities just like everywhere else. Whether it’s because Samsung has issues manufacturing the Galaxy Fold in larger numbers or if it’s part of the company’s marketing strategy, its premium foldable device followed pretty much the same pattern in every market in which it was introduced.

As a result, it should come as no surprise that Samsung intends on replenishing W20 5G stocks relatively soon. Those who have missed their opportunity to buy the device will have another shot on December 20. And with many prospective buyers probably fearing on missing out again, the W20 5G will likely sell out the second time around as well.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics shuts down HDI operations in China

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is going to shut down its HDI (high-density interconnected) printed circuit board manufacturing unit in Jiangsu, China, due to low profitability, reveals a report by The Korea Herald.

Its HDI unit in China will stop producing and selling products, and the company will begin selling its assets instead. Unsurprisingly, the main reason behind Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ low profitability in China lies with strong competition from local suppliers who can afford to undercut Samsung.

Samsung keeps losing ground to Chinese rivals

HDI printed circuit boards are used by various products, ranging from laptops to smartphones. The company’s HDI unit in Jiangsu has been bleeding cash, and news of its shutdown comes just a couple of months after Samsung decided to pull the plug on its smartphone manufacturing operations in China. This only shows just how competitive local companies can be, and further accentuates Samsung’s lack of influence in the Chinese mobile space.

However, sources suggest that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been looking to shelve its HDI business as a whole, not only in China but in other markets as well. This doesn’t seem to be entirely the case, or at least not for the time being. As opposed to closing its HDI operations in Busan, South Korea, Samsung Electro-Mechanics has been moving its production line to Vietnam.

HDI technology is not as good as SLP

While it may seem like Samsung Electro-Mechanics is taking a big hit by shutting down its HDI operations in Jiangsu, China (and it very well might), there still is the matter of SLP technology to consider. SLP is a more advanced printed circuit board manufacturing method and it was first employed by the Galaxy S9. SLP packages are more compact and allow for larger batteries and/or better internal components for smartphones.

With that in mind, Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ decision to shut down its HDI operations in China doesn’t look as doomy and gloomy. The overall demand for HDI PCBs may have slowed down because of the advancements brought forth by SLP, and Samsung Electro-Mechanics is one of the companies that are able to manufacture SLP boards. In other words – and while this wasn’t officially confirmed – the company might feel like it needs to focus less on HDI and more on other, more modern solutions. Should this be the case, Samsung Electro-Mechanics might be cooking a longer-term plan to bolster its revenues by focusing less on HDI and more on SLP manufacturing.

Samsung annual exec reshuffle seemingly on hold ahead of major reform

Samsung Electronics has yet to make any announcements regarding its annual organizational reshuffle, but the company’s leadership could go through a major reform in the near future. Sources cited by The Korea Herald claim that Samsung Electronics has remained silent on the matter because of the ongoing legal issues involving de facto leader Lee Jae-yong and over 30 executives.

Industry watchers are uncertain of how the company’s leadership will look like next year, but also believe that some executives, including DJ Koh, will retain their current responsibilities. Samsung usually announces its annual organizational reshuffle in early December but the company is now running late.

Samsung Electronics could go through a major organizational reform

Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong and dozens of executives are embroiled in a legal battle involving bribery, and their case wasn’t made easier when three executive vice presidents were recently found to attempt to destroy evidence supporting the claim of fraud.

An industry official cited by The Korea Times claims that Lee will need to show he is at least making efforts to renew the organization somehow to avoid imprisonment. A judge already ordered Lee Jae-yong to strengthen Samsung’s compliance unit to ensure that the company is capable of adhering to external rules and meet regulatory demands.

Given the current situation, some industry watchers believe that Samsung Electronics could go through a major organizational reform, which is why the annual reshuffling appears to have been put on hold. Then again, this isn’t the first time when the annual reshuffle has been delayed because of (the same) legal disputes. Either way, even if a major reform will take place, industry watchers believe that Samsung’s Device Solutions, Mobile Communications, and Consumer Electronics divisions will likely continue to be led by Kim Ki-nam, DJ Koh, and Kim Hyun-suk, respectively.

Samsung Galaxy Book Flex and Ion pre-orders go live in Korea tomorrow

The wait for the world’s first QLED-equipped laptops is nearly over, as Samsung’s Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion are set to become available for pre-order this Friday – December 13 – at least in South Korea.

Both laptop models were unveiled in late October at SDC 2019, and they were both developed as part of Intel’s Project Athena program to ensure good performance, battery life, and the inclusion of various premium features such as Wi-Fi 6 and Thunderbolt 3.

Wireless PowerShare make these laptops a great fit for Galaxy smartphone owners

As we’ve mentioned in our Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion hands-on, both of these brand new products incorporate Wireless PowerShare for the first time in the history of laptops. Essentially, both laptops are equipped with a trackpad that doubles as a wireless charging pad for Qi-compatible devices.

The Galaxy Book Flex and Galaxy Book Ion have common DNA and share a lot of features and specifications including QLED display technology, but they are also quite different in some areas such as design. The Galaxy Book Flex is a 2-in-1 laptop featuring a 360-degree hinge, whereas the Book Ion retains a conventional laptop form factor. Likewise, the Book Flex comes with the same kind of S Pen that you would find on the Galaxy Note 10 smartphone series, while the Book Ion lacks this feature altogether.

As per a report by The Korea Herald, the 2-in-1 model will launch in South Korea for the starting price of 1.75 million won ($1,470) and can go as high as 2.92 million won ($2,457). Its sibling will be priced between 1.47 and 2.59 million won ($1,240 – $2,180).

Galaxy Book Flex and Book Ion pre-orders will commence tomorrow and Samsung will begin shipping the products on December 20. Other markets should follow a similar launch schedule and start selling the two QLED laptops before the end of the year.

Galaxy Store update brings dark mode and One UI design

Samsung has released a new v4.5.10.5 app update for the Galaxy Store in select markets. The update finally brings dark mode and One UI design to the company’s app store. Most of Samsung’s apps have already received these features in the last year or so. With the new update, Galaxy Store is also now joining that list, at least in some markets.

You can check for the app update under About Galaxy Store in the app store settings. In some cases, Samsung also tends to prompt users to install the update when they open the app. If none of that works, you can download the latest Galaxy Store APK from our database and manually install it. Do note that the APK may not work in select regions like India where the company has a different version of Galaxy Store.

Google Play Store may the most popular and default app store on Android, but it is still missing a few apps that are available in the Galaxy Store. For apps and games like Fortnite, Good Lock, Theme Park, and more, Galaxy customers have to rely on Samsung’s app store that comes pre-installed on their devices. Many of the company’s pre-installed apps are also updated through Galaxy Store. It is good to see Samsung finally bring its new design language to this somewhat regularly used app as well.

Galaxy A51 preview: Quad camera and Android 10 on a budget

Earlier today, Samsung launched the Galaxy A51 in Vietnam, the first of its 2020 A series smartphones and the sequel to the Galaxy A50, which is probably the most popular of Samsung’s 2019 A series phones. With the Galaxy A51, Samsung is focusing on the camera experience, with the A51 sporting four rear cameras, one of which is a macro camera for close-up shots.

The A51 also has an Infinity-O display like the one on the Galaxy Note 10, and it runs Android 10 out of the box, becoming the first Galaxy phone to be launching with the latest version of Android out of the box before the next Galaxy S flagship comes around. I had the chance to play with the phone at its launch in Vietnam today, and here are my initial impressions.

Galaxy A51 hands-on

The A51’s macro camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels, and, frankly, the results aren’t bad. I took three close-up shots of props Samsung had put up at the event, and the macro camera lets you get considerably close. However, you do have to get really close to the subject to get it into focus, so many will wish Samsung had just put in a telephoto lens instead. Telephoto lenses let you get close without physically moving closer to the subject, and cost considerations are no doubt the reason Samsung opted to equip the A51 with a macro camera.

At 12 megapixels, the ultra-wide camera on the Galaxy A51 has a higher megapixel count than ultra-wide cameras we’ve seen on other non-flagship Galaxy smartphones (which have a 5MP or 8MP ultra-wide camera depending on the phone’s cost), but I couldn’t test it enough to say if the bump in resolution makes a big difference. I couldn’t test the 48MP main camera or 32MP front camera, either, but you can check our Galaxy A70 review for a few samples, as the A51 has the same sensors.

I was also unable to test the on-screen fingerprint reader, but Samsung has hopefully improved its performance, as the one on the Galaxy A50 was rather mediocre. I did manage to browse through the general software a bit, and it’s great to see that the A51 isn’t going to be outdated at launch. It runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 and felt pretty snappy and responsive. I saw features like Bixby Routines and Edge screen on the device, although the built-in screen recorder from One UI 2.0 was missing.

Samsung is making the Galaxy Note 10’s Infinity-O display the standard across its smartphone range next year, and the A51 is the first of those devices to be coming to market. Being a Super AMOLED panel, the colors and overall quality looked excellent, and the bezels are pretty small and make the 6.5-inch screen feel compact to use. As for the design, the phone has a crisscross pattern in the upper half of the back and a ridged pattern in the lower half, and it all shines beautifully when light hits the back at different angles.

I can see the Galaxy A51 becoming another blockbuster hit for Samsung seeing how well the Galaxy A50 has done worldwide. The macro camera, Infinity-O display, and Android 10 out of the box are meaningful upgrades that make the $350 price tag pretty compelling, although Samsung will have to make sure it doesn’t wait too long to launch the Galaxy A51 outside Vietnam given how quickly the competition in the budget and mid-range is moving these days.

Samsung Galaxy A51 vs Galaxy A71 specs comparison

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy A51 and A71 mid-range smartphones today. As the model names suggest, these are successors to the Galaxy A50 and A70, respectively. Though the Galaxy A71 is the better device of the two in the specs department, it also comes at a higher price. This makes the choice between the two models tricky for potential buyers.

As you can see from the specs comparison below, the Galaxy A71 has a bigger display, more RAM, higher base storage, higher-resolution primary camera, larger battery, and faster wired charging than the A51. Although Samsung is yet to specify the chipset used in the A71, it will probably be faster than the one powering its cheaper sibling. For the A70, Samsung opted for a Snapdragon chipset, which made it a better performer than the Exynos-powered A50. The same may be the case with their successors as well.

Other than these differences, both the new devices are very similar. They even sport a similar design language and build quality. This makes the price the most important factor in determining which of the two models offer a better value for money. The Galaxy A51 is priced at around $350 in Vietnam, while the company is yet to reveal how much the A71 costs.

We will be reviewing both the devices in the coming weeks. Hopefully, by then will have the pricing details for the A71, which will make the comparison between the two a lot more helpful.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 are in development

Samsung has launched the first of its new 2020 Galaxy A handsets today. Many are now looking forward to the refresh of the Galaxy M lineup, the online-only series that did perform very well in the Indian market. As you’d expect, new Galaxy M models are now in development.

We hear from our sources that Samsung is working on the Galaxy M11 (SM-M115F) and the Galaxy M31 (SM-M315F). It appears that the new naming convention that Samsung is using for the 2020 Galaxy A series will be used for the Galaxy M series as well.

Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 have entered development

There’s not a lot of information available about the new Galaxy M handsets so far as they’re in an early stage of development. However, we do know that the Galaxy M11 and the Galaxy M31 will be offered with 32GB and 64GB of internal storage, respectively.

Given that this series also includes models like the Galaxy M40 and M20, it’s safe to assume that Samsung will eventually release the Galaxy M41 and the Galaxy M21 as well. It remains to be seen just what improvements Samsung makes to the lineup.

The 2020 Galaxy A series has picked up the Infinity-O display which places a punch hole in the center of the display for the front camera. It’s unclear if that’s going to be the case for the upcoming Galaxy M series as well. What we can expect are minor improvements in the power package and possibly significant upgrades for the camera.

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 in January this year so it’s likely that we’ll see the new devices around the same time in 2020. The Galaxy M is an important component of Samsung’s smartphone strategy as it allows the company to effectively compete against the Chinese in the lucrative Indian market.

No wonder Samsung released Android 10 for the Galaxy M20 and M30 out of the blue in India today. It goes without saying that many will be looking forward to what the Galaxy M11 and Galaxy M31 have to offer.

Samsung Galaxy A51 vs Galaxy A50 specs comparison

Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy A51 at a special event in Vietnam today. It is a successor to the Galaxy A50 launched in February last year. However, it’s not a major upgrade as it brings only modest design and spec updates. Nevertheless, these improvements still make it an attractive package given that the Galaxy A50 is already a compelling device.

Compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy A51 sports a slightly bigger display and a new macro camera on the back. It also bumps the resolution of the primary, ultrawide, and selfie cameras. The device runs Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box, making it the first Galaxy device to launch with the latest software. The processor and other internals, however, remain unchanged, which many potential buyers might find disappointing.

Apart from the internals, the Galaxy A51 also sports a different design from its predecessor, as you can see in the images. On the front, the bezels are smaller with a punch-hole camera, making the A51 look a bit more modern and premium. On the back, it sports a large rectangular quad-camera module and a new gradient effect. The body of the device, however, is still made out of glossy plastic that Samsung refers to as ‘3D Glasstic’.

Whether all of these changes add up to make the Galaxy A51 a worthy successor to the A50 remains to be seen. We hope to answer this question in our review of the device that will be published soon.

Samsung Galaxy A71 vs Galaxy A70 specs comparison

Nine months after launching the Galaxy A70, Samsung today unveiled the Galaxy A71. This is the second new phone from Samsung’s 2020 Galaxy A lineup to be unveiled so far, the first being the Galaxy A51. Samsung has made some design improvements to the device and upgraded some of the specs. However, it has more than a few similarities with the Galaxy A70.

For starters, the display size is exactly the same on both devices, even though the Galaxy A71 uses an Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole for the selfie camera. Both devices are made of the same Glasstic material but Samsung has added a bit of splash to it with the new prism pattern and colors.

The Galaxy A71 offers significant improvements in the camera department even though some of its other specs remain the same as the Galaxy A70. Samsung has neither added a bigger battery nor ramped up the charging speed on the new model.

Let’s do a deeper dive into the specs of both devices to see how they stack up against each other.

Samsung Galaxy A71 unveiled with Android 10 and Macro camera

While today’s event in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is only about the Galaxy A51, Samsung has quietly unveiled the Galaxy A71 as well. There were rumors that suggested this device was going to be made official soon. That’s precisely what has happened today.

The successor to the Galaxy A70 has the same design signature that Samsung is pushing with the new Galaxy A series. This includes an Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole for the camera and the new L-shaped camera setup at the back.

Galaxy A71 also comes with a Macro camera

The Galaxy A71 features a 6.7-inch 1080×2400 pixel resolution Super AMOLED display, that’s exactly the same as the Galaxy A70, except that the latter had an Infinity-U notch. Made from Samsung’s Glasstic material, it measures in at 164.6 x 76.0 x 7.7 mm and weighs 179g. There’s an in-display fingerprint sensor as well.

It gets a slight bump in performance with the dual 2.2 GHz + hexa 1.8GHz octa-core chip, likely the Snapdragon 730, and will be offered with 6/8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It has the same 4,500mAh battery as its predecessor with support for 25W fast charging.

Much like the Galaxy A51, the real star here is the camera. The Galaxy A71 has a 64-megapixel f/1.8 primary sensor compared to the Galaxy A70’s 32-megapixel shooter. It also gets a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide and a 5-megapixel f/2.2 depth sensor. The 5-megapixel f/2.4 Macro camera is an entirely new addition to the series. It will allow for improved close-up photography. There’s also a 32-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed when it’s going to make the Galaxy A71 available to the public. Pricing information is not yet known. It will be offered in Prism Crush Black, Silver, Blue and Pink colors. Since the Galaxy A51 is coming with Android 10, it goes without saying that the Galaxy A71 will too.

It’s pretty much the same story as the Galaxy A50. Some slight design changes, a minor bump in the specs and major improvements for the camera. Would that be enough to compel people to purchase the Galaxy A71? Only time will tell.

Galaxy A51 official with macro camera, Infinity-O display, Android 10

Samsung has finally announced the Galaxy A51, the first smartphone from the company’s 2020 Galaxy A series to go official. Thanks to all the leaks and rumors, it was already pretty clear what the Galaxy A51 will bring to the table, and Samsung has now confirmed everything that was already known.

Quad rear camera, Android 10, and more

A quad rear camera setup is the star of the show on the Galaxy A51. The A51 is the first Galaxy phone to feature a macro camera (a 5MP lens), making it possible to get close to a subject and capture details such as the subject’s texture. The ultra-wide camera is also getting a bump from an 8-megapixel sensor to a 12-megapixel sensor 123-degree field of view), while the primary rear camera is a 48MP lens like the one seen on the Galaxy A50s. The fourth camera is a 5MP depth sensor for enabling bokeh shots.

The other notable upgrade the Galaxy A51 brings over its predecessor is the Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole for the 32MP front camera. This Infinity-O display was first seen on the Galaxy Note 10 earlier this year – thanks to the smaller bezels, the A51 has a 6.5-inch screen despite being as tall as and slightly narrower than the Galaxy A50, which has a 6.4-inch panel. The Galaxy A51 also runs Android 10 out of the box with One UI 2.0, despite coming out months before the Galaxy S11.

Other specs on the Galaxy A51 are the same as they were on the Galaxy A50. There’s 4 or 6GB of RAM paired with 64GB or 128GB of storage, a 4,000 mAh battery with 15W fast charging, an optical on-screen fingerprint reader, and an Exynos 9611 SoC. The A50 is powered by the Exynos 9610, but the two chips have the same technical specs. As far as the design is concerned, the A51 has a “3D Glasstic” body like the A50 with a prism-like crisscross pattern and a gradient effect that changes depending on how the light hits it.

Priced at $350, goes on sale on December 27

The Galaxy A51 will go on sale in Vietnam on December 27 for 7,990,000 Vietnamese Dong, which translates to around $350, an excellent price for the hardware on offer. It will be available in Prism Crush Black, Prism Crush White, Prism Crush Pink, and Prism Crush Blue colors worldwide, but no pricing or release dates for other markets has currently been revealed.

Breaking: Galaxy M20 and M30 receiving Android 10 update in India

In a major surprise, Samsung has started rolling out the Android 10 update for the Galaxy M20 and M30 in India. Both these devices were supposed to receive the update in January, but, as is often the case, the update is rolling out earlier than promised. So far, the company has released the Android 10 stable update only for the Galaxy S10 lineup, making the M20 and the M30 the first set of budget devices to receive the latest Android version.

While some Galaxy flagship users — especially Note 10 owners — might feel disappointed that their devices are yet to receive the same update, it’s encouraging to see Samsung release Android version updates to its budget devices so quickly. Currently, the update appears to be available only in India, but you can expect that to change soon. The release for the Galaxy M20 and M30 comes the version number M205FDDU3CSL4 and M305FDDU3CSL4, respectively. The update also brings the December 2019 security patch to both these devices.

Android 10 and One UI 2.0 are relatively minor updates, but there is still enough here to get excited. We will soon publish a post detailing the Android 10 experience on Galaxy budget and mid-range devices, so do remember to come back later. For now, you can read our One UI 2.0 Feature Focus series to learn about some of the new features and improvements included in the latest update

If you own either a Galaxy M20 or M30 in India, you should be receiving the OTA update notification soon. You can also manually check for the update by going into Settings and tapping the Download and install option under the Software Update menu. If you are impatient to wait for the update, you can download the latest firmware for these devices from our database and manually flash it. If you decide to go that route, you can get the Android 10 firmware for the Galaxy M20 here and the M30 here.
