Samsung details September 2018 security patch contents

Samsung today detailed the September 2018 security patch contents. It hasn’t rolled out the latest security maintenance release so far even though we have seen over the past couple of months that it releases the patch for a few devices before actually telling us what it brings to the table.

The company today confirmed the contents of the latest security maintenance release for supported devices. As expected, it brings patches for dozens of vulnerabilities discovered in the Android operating system.

September 2018 security patch

All of the patches that are part and parcel of the Android Security Bulletin – Sep 2018 package are included in this security maintenance release. The most severe vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to use a specially crafted file to run arbitrary code on the device within the context of an application.

There are fixes for nine critical vulnerabilities in this patch in addition to fixes for dozens of high and moderate-risk vulnerabilities. 18 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items or vulnerabilities discovered in Samsung’s own software have been addressed in this update as well.

Having detailed the latest security patch for the month of September 2018 now it’s only a matter of time before Samsung starts rolling out the patch to compatible devices. We can expect supported devices to start receiving firmware updates with the latest patch in the coming days.

Samsung Galaxy View 2 release may not be that far off now

It appears that the Samsung Galaxy View 2 release could take place in the coming months. It’s the successor to the original Galaxy View that Samsung launched in 2015. The Galaxy View was a 18.4-inch “movable display” that was neither a tablet nor a conventional display. It was something in between. According to a recent report, Samsung has a successor to the Galaxy View in the pipeline.

The company hasn’t said anything about the Samsung Galaxy View 2 release yet but the device has picked up two key certifications. This can be taken as an indication of an impending launch. The Galaxy View 2 bearing model number SM-T927A has received its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certifications.

Samsung Galaxy View 2 release

According to the previous report, the new Galaxy View will have a slightly smaller 17.5-inch display with an integrated book-like hinge that lets the device stand in two different configurations. The open configuration would make the screen stand upright like a notebook while the closed configuration will have it at a 30 degree angle similar to a drafting desk.

The original Galaxy View had a handle which allowed users to carry it around like they would a shopping bag. That has reportedly not made the cut for the successor. So it’s possible that the new device could be carried around like a laptop once the hinge is closed.

Details about the Galaxy View 2’s specs are slim but it’s said to feature an Exynos processor with 3GB of RAM and Full HD display resolution. It will be running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. The Bluetooth certification confirms that the device will have support for Bluetooth 5.0. It has also obtained the Wi-Fi certification which confirms support for 802.11 b/g/n ac with 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies.

As far as the launch is concerned, the Galaxy View 2 may be launched on AT&T in the United States first. Samsung hasn’t commented on any reports concerning the Galaxy View 2 at this point in time.

How to use Samsung Secure Folder on the Galaxy Note 9

Samsung introduced the Secure Folder a couple of years ago on the then-latest Galaxy Note flagship. It has since been rolled out to a wide variety of devices while the Galaxy Note 9 comes with it out of the box. If this is your first device from the Korean giant then this guide will teach you how to use Samsung Secure Folder on Galaxy Note 9.

How to use Samsung Secure Folder

Secure Folder refers to a private and encrypted space on your smartphone that’s created by the device based on the defense-grade Samsung Knox security platform. This secure space and be used to store and encrypt all private data and apps. You can have private files, images, videos, contacts and more in Secure Folder.

The data on commonly used native apps can be moved to the Secure Folder as well. All apps and data in Secure Folder are sandboxed separately on the device so they remain completely isolated from other data on the device. They can’t be accessed unless entry is authorized by the user through the personalized lock type.

Bixby third-party apps support will arrive this year

Samsung’s Bixby voice assistant can be used to perform any function on supported devices using voice commands that you can do by tapping on the screen. Want to lower the screen brightness or the volume? Just ask Bixby. That has largely been limited to system functions and native apps, though. It’s set to change later this year as Samsung has confirmed that Bixby third-party apps support will arrive in the coming months.

This isn’t the first time we are hearing that Samsung is going to open up Bixby to developers so that they can create their own apps for the assistant. Amazon has seen considerable success with this strategy for its Alexa assistant. It will be good for users as well since they will be able to do a lot more with Bixby.

Bixby third-party apps support

Samsung’s mobile division’s CEO DJ Koh confirmed today that the company will allow third-party developers to build apps for Bixby starting later this year. This will improve the assistant’s capabilities and make it more useful. It’s also unsurprising that this announcement comes a month after Samsung revealed the Galaxy Home, its first Bixby-powered smart speaker.

Koh confirmed that Samsung will release an SDK for Bixby third-party apps support in addition to an API. The former will let developers make apps with Bixby and the latter will allow Bixby to be integrated with other apps. This new software is going to be released in November at the company’s annual Samsung Developer Conference.

That’s not all that the company has in store for us at Samsung Developer Conference 2018. Koh also confirmed today that Samsung will be launching its much-awaited foldable smartphone later this year. The company will likely be unveiling the handset at SDC 2018, according to the CEO.

Possible successor to the Galaxy A8+ gets FCC clearance

Based on a Geekbench result, we reported about a new Galaxy A series device with model number SM-A750FN under development last month. The model number pointed to a successor to the current Galaxy A8+ (2018). We haven’t heard much about this device since then, but it has now been spotted on the FCC website securing regulatory approval.

As is common with FCC certifications, nothing substantial about the new device is revealed. The only information about its specifications comes from the earlier benchmark result. The Geekbench listing mentions an Exynos 7885 SoC, 4 GB of RAM, and Android 8.0 Oreo onboard. Since these specifications are not very different from the current Galaxy A8+, it is possible the benchmark result was from an early prototype even before the internals were finalized.

Too early for a Galaxy A8+ (2018) refresh?

Nothing else is known about this midrange model currently. The FCC certification, however, is a clear indication that the device may hit the market in the coming months. If it is indeed closer to launch, we can expect more leaks in the coming weeks. Almost all of Samsung’s recent smartphones have been leaked extensively before their official launch.

Despite all the guesswork and circumstantial evidence, it is not yet certain this device will be a successor to the current Galaxy A8+ (although the chances are high). Since the Galaxy A8+ (2018) was launched earlier this year, a successor before the end of the year may seem too soon and out of the yearly release schedule. However, Samsung’s mobile chief has been talking a lot about revamping the company’s strategy in the midrange smartphone segment, so an early refresh of the Galaxy A8+ to better compete in the market doesn’t seem too far-fetched.

Galaxy Note 9 touch sensitivity setting adjustment makes a huge difference

You may be looking to adjust the Galaxy Note 9 touch sensitivity setting if you feel that it could be a bit better on Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone. You’d be better off enabling it anyway if you’re using a screen protector with your device. You may find yourself having to press down harder than usual on the display to register touch input when the screen protector is installed.

This isn’t something that the Galaxy Note 9 touch sensitivity setting adjustment can’t fix. It only takes turning on a toggle to improve the touch sensitivity of the flagship’s display. The improvement is noticeable and makes life easier when you’re using a screen protector to safeguard that gorgeous Infinity Display of the Galaxy Note 9.

Galaxy Note 9 touch sensitivity setting adjustment

This isn’t a new feature by any stretch of the imagination. Manufacturers have allowed users to do this on smartphones for a very long time. It was previously known as the “Glove mode,” as it was meant to ensure that the display responded accurately even when users had gloves on.

The advancements in display technology have eliminated the need for a special mode for when you have gloves on. The Galaxy Note 9 touch sensitivity setting is more for improving the sensitivity so that there’s no lag in the input when the user has a screen protector on the device.

Step 1: Launch Settings and enter the Advanced features menu.

Step 2: Scroll down to find the Touch sensitivity option at the bottom of the list. Tap on it to turn the toggle ON.

There’s no slider that comes up to let you manually set the screen sensitivity. The device makes the adjustment on its own. If you do have a screen protector on your Galaxy Note 9, you’ll find that this little adjustment makes a world of a difference. Follow all of our Galaxy Note 9 tips to get the most out of your new Samsung flagship.
