First Galaxy A9 (2018) commercial touts the quad camera

The Galaxy A9 (2018) is the world’s first smartphone with a quad camera. Samsung is obviously going to tout this. It has become the only come to launch such a device. The new Galaxy A9 was unveiled at an event in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. With the launch out of the way, Samsung can now get down to the business of selling this device.

It has released the first Galaxy A9 TV commercial. As expected, the quad camera is the star of the show. The entire commercial is dedicated to the camera’s capabilities with no mention of any of the handset’s other abilities.

You’ll buy it for the camera after all

The device itself isn’t all that different from other mid-range Samsung handsets. It’s similar in more ways than one to the Galaxy A8 Star. The only thing that sets it apart is the quad camera system. The Galaxy A9 (2018) arrives not long after the new Galaxy A7, Samsung’s first smartphone with a triple camera.

The quad camera system is what this TV commercial focuses on. It starts off by highlighting the 8-megapixel Ultra-Wide lens that has a 120-degree FOV. The 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom gets its moment to shine as well. The 5-megapixel Depth lens allows for Live Focus photos, adding bokeh (blur) effect to images. The primary 24-megapixel lens is a solid shooter in its own right. Check out our samples from all four of the Galaxy A9’s cameras.

We mentioned in our Galaxy A9 hands-on that the quad camera system on this device works as advertised. There are some handy software features as well to enhance the imaging experience. Other than that, it’s a run of the mill mid-ranger from Samsung.

Samsung said yesterday that the Galaxy A9 will launch in mid-November. We have already told you how much the Galaxy A9 (2018) will cost.

Samsung boss says foldable device will double as a tablet and phone

Much has been said and written about Samsung’s foldable device. The company has been working on it for a couple of years. More information about this device will be provided at SDC 2018 next month. The device may not be out until next year.

DJ Koh, president and CEO of Samsung’s mobile division, dropped some hints about the foldable device on the sidelines of the Galaxy A9 launch event in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. He said that the device will double as a tablet and phone.

Samsung’s foldable device will be very versatile

Prior reports have suggested that the device will have a book-like form factor with a vertically foldable display. The in-folding design will hide the primary display entirely when folded. The phone will remain usable with the external display when the device is folded. It’s said to feature a 7.3-inch primary OLED display and a 4.6-inch external OLED display.

Koh didn’t confirm the specifics of the displays. He did mention that it would be possible to use the device as a tablet with multitasking capability before folding it up and using it as a phone. “When we deliver a foldable phone, it has to be really meaningful to our customer,” he said, adding that “If the user experience is not up to my standard, I don’t want to deliver those kind of products.”

This isn’t the first time that Koh is stressing that the user experience of this device has to be worth it for Samsung to launch it. He has previously said that the company’s foldable device won’t be a gimmick. He reiterated that yesterday. The device will be released globally.

Koh is upbeat on the prospects for the foldable device. “I’m positive that we do need a foldable phone,” he said, adding that “Possibly when we start selling the foldable phone, it may be a niche market, but definitely, it will expand.”

Samsung’s developers’ conference takes place early next month. The company is expected to provide a sneak peek of the device at the event in San Francisco.

Here’s one scene captured by each of the Galaxy A9’s four rear cameras

The Galaxy A9 is the world’s first smartphone with four rear cameras. You get a 24-megapixel lens for regular pictures, a 5-megapixel lens for bokeh (Live Focus) pictures, a telephoto lens for zooming in on a subject, and an ultra-wide lens for capturing, well, a wider scene than regular cameras. And if you’re wondering how each of these makes a difference to what you capture, we have a camera sample that we shot with each of the four rear cameras on the Galaxy A9 (2018).

Galaxy A9 camera samples: One from each of the quad rear cameras

The ultra-wide camera on the Galaxy A7 is reason alone for us to recommend that phone for potential buyers, and the Galaxy A9’s four rear cameras look quite useful as well. Separating the depth and zoom cameras is also a good step in our opinion. Having just a telephoto lens for zoom and Live Focus functionality, as is the case on Samsung flagships, means you have to move away from a subject whenever you want to take a bokeh shot. Samsung’s mid-range and budget phones that have standard secondary depth sensors for Live Focus pictures tend to work better in that regard.

Of course, our final verdict on how these cameras work will come in our Galaxy A9 review, but if you are wondering why Samsung had to put four cameras on a phone, we hope the Galaxy A9 camera samples below will give you a hint. The first one is taken by the 24MP primary camera and is followed by the ultra-wide, Live Focus, and 2x zoom shots respectively. Check them out and let us know what you think about the Galaxy A9 (2018)! Don’t forget to read our hands-on experience with the phone as well.

Best Galaxy A9 (2018) features: It’s all about the camera

The wait is finally over for those who were looking forward to Samsung’s first quad camera smartphone. It also happens to be the world’s first smartphone with four cameras at the back. It has quite a few features but here are some of the best Galaxy A9 (2018) features for which you may consider spending your money on this device. Most of them are camera-related and that was to be expected from this device. The camera is what people will really buy it for.

Best Galaxy A9 (2018) features

Scene Optimizer

The quad camera system is the biggest selling point of this device. Samsung has added innovative software features to this device to further improve the imaging experience. Scene Optimizer is one such feature. Powered by artificial intelligence, Scene Optimizer is capable of recognizing 19 different scenes and then adjusting the settings accordingly to get you the perfect shot.

Pro Lighting

This is yet another camera feature that makes the Galaxy A9 appealing. The feature is also present on the Galaxy A7 – Samsung’s first triple camera smartphone. It gives you several creative lighting effects to personalize and add that extra oomph to your selfies. Since the Galaxy A9 is meant for the Instagram generation, this feature will be very well received for sure.

Ultra Wide-Angle Photos

Ever find it difficult to get the entire subject in the frame without having to get into positions that make you wish you did yoga? The Ultra-Wide Angle feature of the Galaxy A9’s camera makes it much easier to do that. The handset has an 8-megapixel Ultra-Wide Angle lens with a 120-degree field of view. We loved it on the Galaxy A7 as well and the feeling remains on this device.

Bixby Voice

Love it or hate it, Samsung’s Bixby assistant is here to stay. The Galaxy A9 gets the full Bixby experience so you’ll be able to use Bixby Voice on it as well. That’s the reason why this handset has a dedicated key for the assistant. Samsung has done a good job of ensuring that the Bixby key isn’t as annoying on this device as it is on some of its other phones. Bixby Voice enables you to do almost anything that you can do by tapping on the screen with voice commands.

Automatic Watermarking

Best Galaxy A9 (2018) features

Want to tell people that you took that super-fly picture of you using the world’s first quad camera smartphone? The Galaxy A9 has a watermarking feature built-in. With it enabled, a “Samsung Quad camera” watermark will be applied automatically to all photos captured using the device. The feature can be enabled from the camera settings menu.

These are some of the best Galaxy A9 (2018) features. We’ll soon be reviewing the device so do check back for that as well. What do you think of the Galaxy A9 so far? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung’s new Galaxy A9 makes the dedicated Bixby key less annoying

Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy A9 today. Like many of its premium devices, it too has a dedicated Bixby key. The qualm that a lot of users have had with this key is that it doesn’t do much to prevent accidental presses. It’s even more irksome on the Galaxy Note 9 which has softer buttons. It doesn’t help that the handset doesn’t allow Bixby to be permanently disabled. However, Samsung has tried to find a middle ground by requiring two quick presses of the button for Bixby on the Note 9.

Galaxy A9’s dedicated Bixby key won’t be too much of an annoyance

The company appears to have looked at this problem from a hardware standpoint on the Galaxy A9. The volume and power buttons are on the right side so the Bixby key gets the left side to itself. The key is placed high up the frame as a result, thanks to the space left behind by the volume buttons. It’s higher than where a user would normally place their thumb when using the device.

I mentioned in my Galaxy A9 hands-on that this is a good design decision that Samsung has made. The dedicated Bixby key doesn’t get in the way and it would be difficult to accidentally press it during normal usage. It’s always there for those who really need it and there will be many who will rely on Bixby. The Galaxy A9 gets the full Bixby experience after all.

Hopefully, Samsung will stick with this going forward, for the sake of consistency and keeping its users sane. Fingers crossed.

Galaxy A9 (2018) hands-on: The world’s first quad-camera smartphone

Not long after Samsung launched its first smartphone with a triple-camera at the back, it’s following that up today with the Galaxy A9. It’s the world’s first quad-camera smartphone. That’s a fact that Samsung reminded us multiple times during today’s event in Kuala Lumpur. It’s quite the about-face for a company that not too long ago said it didn’t want to be the “world’s first” if it meant rushing things.

Let’s get one thing clear right off the bat. The Galaxy A9 is a mid-range smartphone through and through. It may boast four cameras that not even flagships from Samsung have had yet, but that’s where the USP ends. Everything else is certifiably mid-range Samsung, with much of its similar to the Galaxy A8 Star (read our A8 Star review here).

Galaxy A9 hands on

The Galaxy A9 isn’t all that different from the Galaxy A7 as far as the design is concerned. The A7 has three vertically placed cameras and the Galaxy A9 has four accompanied by the flash. One noticeable difference is the fingerprint sensor placement. The Galaxy A7 is Samsung’s first smartphone with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

That’s not the case here. The Galaxy A9 has its fingerprint sensor at the back. Those who complain that Samsung places its rear fingerprint sensors too high won’t be happy with the A9. In this instance, the fingerprint sensor on the Galaxy A9 seems like an afterthought. It would have been nice to see the side-mounted fingerprint sensor on this device as well, at least for the sake of continuity. The Galaxy A7 has plastic on the sides but metal sides have never been a hindrance for side-mounted fingerprint sensors. Just look at the many smartphones with side-mounted sensors that Sony has released over the years.

That being said, the Galaxy A9 does look and feel like a premium device. Samsung has been gunning for this look with its Galaxy A series for the past couple of years. The Galaxy A9 sticks to the script perfectly. It feels nice and light in the hand with the 3D curved glass allowing it to rest comfortably.

The volume and power buttons are on the right side while the Bixby key is placed high up on the left side. Those who don’t particularly like Samsung’s assistant will appreciate this change. It’s high up enough to prevent accidental presses. With the Galaxy A9 featuring Bixby Voice (a feature missing on the A7), this minor change will make a world of difference.

Let’s talk about the specs real quick because they’re nothing to write home about. The Galaxy A9 has a 6.3-inch Full HD+ 2220×1080 pixel resolution display. It will be available in 6/8GB RAM variants, both with 128GB internal storage. It supports microSD cards up to 500GB for a total of 600GB storage in your pocket. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660 processor and there’s a 3,800mAh battery keeping the lights on.

Quad rear camera is the star of the show

The quad camera is the biggest selling point of this device. The Galaxy A9 has 8-megapixel Ultra-Wide 120-degree FOV, 10-megapixel telephoto, 5-megapixel depth and 24-megapixel primary sensors. It has been developed with the Instagram generation in mind, which is why the camera was the only thing that Samsung really talked about during the event.

Just because a device has four cameras doesn’t mean it’s better than anything else on the market. What this system merely does is allow for a variety of use cases. The primary lens is a standard 24-megapixel f1.7 aperture camera. Then there’s the 10-megapixel telephoto lens which allows for 2x optical zoom. This is what sets the Galaxy A9 apart from the Galaxy A7. The 8-megapixel 120-degree Ultra-Wide and 5-megapixel Depth lens for Live Focus photos are already present on the Galaxy A7. There’s a 24-megapixel front camera for selfies.

Our initial impressions of this setup are that it works as advertised. We have already raved about the Ultra-Wide angle lens in our Galaxy A7 review, and you’ll reap the same benefits on the Galaxy A9. The telephoto lens allows you to get closer to a subject without compromising on the image quality and that’s a welcome feature to have. The camera software lets you switch between the primary, zoom and wide-angle cameras from the auto mode. There’s a small UI overlay in the viewfinder which lets you to do this with a single tap. Samsung’s Scene Optimizer is present on this device as well. It uses AI to recognize up to 19 different scenes and adjusts settings accordingly.

One has to dock points for some elements that are missing from the Galaxy A9. There’s no wireless charging, water resistance or even MST Samsung Pay. Samsung Pay only works over NFC, which feels like a step backward (the A8 Star already suffers from this limitation). The device will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo. Asking for Pie would have been stretching it a bit, but one would have reasonably expected there to be Android 8.1.

Gradient colors make a world of difference

Samsung has only flirted with gradient colors before and it’s embracing them with the Galaxy A9. Caviar Black is your boring old black color. The real stars are the Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink gradient colors. They’re eye-catching and the light plays off of them beautifully. But they are also fingerprint magnets, so you’ll be constantly wiping them to ensure that they look pristine. Full marks to Samsung for these colors and the design.

The company hasn’t confirmed precise availability details for the Galaxy A9. The handset will be out later next month. We’ve already told you that the base model with 6GB of RAM is going to cost €599 in Europe. The company’s local divisions will confirm pricing and availability in due course.

Galaxy A9 hands on

Stay tuned for our full review of the Galaxy A9 in the coming weeks. We’ll put the camera through its paces and let you know if it’s worth spending money on. Based on this Galaxy A9 hands on, what do you make of the world’s first quad camera smartphone so far? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung indirectly mocked the Google Pixel 3 XL notch on Twitter

Samsung has been known to make fun of Apple products on its social media channels and through proper made-for-television video commercials, even as it supplies many of the important iPhone components to its Cupertino rival in the background. Well, Samsung US decided the notch on the new Google Pixel flagship needs to be mocked as well and proceeded to do just that on Twitter during and after the Pixel 3 XL’s announcement.

Google Pixel 3 XL notch indirectly mocked by Samsung

However, the Samsung US Twitter account didn’t go after the Pixel 3 XL directly. Instead, it responded to a tweet from a Twitter user who tagged Samsung and asked the company to “save us” from the notch. “Time to botch the notch” was Samsung’s answer, but it didn’t end there. Another tweet had someone telling Google that they had copied a lot from the Korean giant for its new phone. Samsung’s sassy and scathing response was that “not everyone is born to lead.” Samsung also said one could “land a plane on it” in a third tweet. Since the user Samsung responded to in this instance has their account set to private, it’s unclear if the company was taking a jab at the size of the notch or the overall size of the Pixel 3 XL.

This is a good example of how Samsung (its US arm in particular) is always ready to poke fun at the competition, whether directly or indirectly, on social media. But it shouldn’t be taken as a guarantee that Samsung itself may never launch a phone with a notch, even though all evidence suggests it may not happen in the near future. Samsung was also upbeat about making fun of other manufacturers not offering user-removable batteries a few years ago, and we all know how things turned out later on.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) vs the original Galaxy A9

Samsung released the original Galaxy A9 back in January 2016. Nearly three years later, the company has now launched another Galaxy A9. Samsung’s smartphone lineup and naming pattern have always been a convoluted mess with too many models and less-than-representative names. So, it is difficult to say if the Galaxy A9 (2018) is a successor to the original Galaxy A9 in any way other than the name itself.

A quick comparison of the specifications of these models does show some interesting similarities. Both these devices are meant to be big phablets with large batteries and priced above other midrange options. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy A9 (2018) is better specced and more powerful than the three-year-old predecessor. The original Galaxy A9, however, has a bigger battery, which makes the combination of a bigger screen and a smaller battery on the new A9 a “theoretical” downgrade.

Galaxy A9 vs. Galaxy A9 (2016): Specs comparison

If you were a fan and/or owner of the Galaxy A9 (2016), the newer model with all its bells and whistles should come across as a worthy upgrade. Of course, if Samsung prices the new model too close to the flagships as the specs indicate, then the choice may not be so simple.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy A9 vs Galaxy A7 (2018)

To tackle the growing dominance of Chinese OEMs, DJ Koh, head of Samsung Mobile, announced a major change in strategy for the company’s midrange smartphone lineup a couple of months back. Instead of trickling down features from the Galaxy flagship models, Samsung decided to launch mid-range smartphones packed with new features that may be missing even from its top-of-the-line products.

Samsung Galaxy A9 vs Galaxy A7 (2018): Specs comparison

The Galaxy A7 (2018) with its rear triple-camera setup was the first device under this new strategy, and the company is now adding the Galaxy A9 (2018) to the list. We know the A9 has one extra rear camera, but how do these devices compare in other specs and features? Well, the new Galaxy A9 (2018) is bigger and better than the Galaxy A7 (2018) in almost aspect and will be priced accordingly. You can look at the specs comparison below to see how these two models fare against each other on paper. For more information, check out our devices page.

Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) price and release date

The Galaxy A9 (2018) is the world’s first smartphone with four cameras at the back. In addition to a 24MP primary camera and a 5MP depth sensor for Live Focus shots, the Galaxy A9 comes with a telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom capability and an ultra-wide lens for 120-degree photos. The A9 is also packed to the brim with other interesting features. Those include the Snapdragon 710 SoC, up to 8GB of RAM, and a 3,800 mAh battery.

Galaxy A9 price and release date

There’s no water resistance nor full Samsung Pay support, but you do get Bixby Voice and Dolby Atmos support (over wired and Bluetooth audio). There’s a 24-megapixel front camera up front for selfies and a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. The A9 also comes in striking new gradient colors. And all of those features come at a premium, as expected. The recommended retail Galaxy A9 price is set at €599 for the base model with 6GB of RAM in Europe.

As for a release date, the Galaxy A9 will be releasing in select markets sometime in November. Concrete dates and individual pricing information for various countries will be revealed by the local Samsung arm. If the Galaxy A7 (2018) is anything to go by, having access to an ultra-wide camera and a zoom lens on a single phone should make the Galaxy A9 quite attractive. Whether the phone’s other aspects match up to the imaging experience is something we will tell you in our Galaxy A9 review in the coming weeks.

Galaxy A9 (2018) with quad rear camera, 8GB RAM, Snapdragon 710 now official

It’s here, folks. Samsung only recently launched its first phone with three rear cameras, and it’s now taking things up a notch with the Galaxy A9 and its quad-camera setup. The Galaxy A9 (2018) is the first non-flagship Samsung phone with a dedicated telephoto camera lens for 2x optical zoom. It also gets an ultra-wide sensor (120-degree field of view, 8MP, F2.4) like the A7, a 5MP depth sensor for Live Focus bokeh pictures, and a 24-megapixel F1.7 primary camera. All four rear cameras are arranged vertically at the back, accompanied by a fingerprint sensor in the middle.

Galaxy A9 features include four rear cameras, Snapdragon 710, 8GB of RAM, and more

The Galaxy A9 is also packed with plenty of other impressive features. It’s Samsung’s first phone with a Snapdragon 7 series chipset, with a Snapdragon 710 octa-core chipset under the hood. It’s also the first mid-range Galaxy phone to come in a variant with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage; the base model gets 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Powering all that hardware is a nice big 3,800 mAh battery. The front camera on the Galaxy A9 is a 24-megapixel F2.0 sensor, and the rear camera has a dedicated Scene Optimizer mode and Flaw Detection like the Galaxy Note 9.

The new A9 gets a 6.3-inch Super AMOLED Full HD+ (2220×1080) display and has the same glass-heavy design as Samsung flagships. Samsung has introduced some new color options, or at least new names for existing colors. The Galaxy A9 color options include Caviar Black, Lemonade Blue and Bubblegum Pink. These colors have a gradient look – for example, the blue version is more like green at the top and a dark blue at the bottom, making for a striking design.

On the software front, the Galaxy A9 comes with Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box and features like App Pair. It’s yet another mid-range Samsung phone to come with Bixby Voice support and a dedicated Bixby button. Samsung Pay support is present as well, although it looks like Samsung has once again omitted an MST chip. That means Samsung Pay will only work over NFC, making it rather useless in many countries. The A9 isn’t water resistant, either.

Galaxy A9 (2018) goes on sale in November

The Galaxy A9 will go on sale in November in select markets. Pricing details will vary by country, but the price for the base model in Europe will be set at €599 (with possibly €50 more for the 8GB/512GB configuration). More information on price and release dates will come out in the coming weeks.
