We go hands-on with the third Galaxy S21 One UI 4.0 beta update

The third Galaxy S21 One UI 4.0 beta update rolled out in all beta-participant countries earlier today. We went hands-on with the latest beta build, and we have a new hands-on video for you at SamMobile TV.

Although Samsung’s latest release doesn’t bring extensive changes compared to what we got before, it tightens up the UI in anticipation of the final release. A few bugs that came to light in the previous beta updates are supposed to be gone, and ads in first-party apps also seem to have disappeared for good.

New Samsung Weather app and unified system icon colors

Aside from the less obvious changes, One UI 4.0 beta 3 features a redesigned Weather app. It’s more animated, adorned with stylized graphics that change depending on the weather and the time of day. And most Samsung icons can now share a single color.

The changelog for the new Android 12-based beta update also seems to be hinting at the final One UI 4.0 update going live soon — hopefully by the end of November.

If you don’t feel like joining the beta program but want to have a quick look at the third update, or you want to keep busy while you’re updating your Galaxy S21 to the new beta build, check our One UI 4.0 hands-on video below, and feel free to join us on social media groups. T-Mobile will buy these Galaxy phones for you just for switching networks

T-Mobile announced a new limited-time campaign today, wherein it’s willing to pay off the Samsung smartphone you bought from another carrier if you decide to switch networks. T-Mobile will cover your current device payment plan with a virtual prepaid card worth up to $1,000 if you switch networks, and the offer is available for up to 5 lines.

Eligible Samsung devices include the Galaxy S8, S9, S10, and Galaxy S20 series. In addition, the offer applies to the Galaxy Note 8, Note 9, and Note 10 series. T-Mobile is trying to poach customers from seven US carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, Spectrum, Xfinity, US Cellular, Claro, and Boost Mobile.

You may or may not have to pay off your phone in advance

Depending on which network you’ll buy your way out of, T-Mobile may or may not require you to pay off your device before you submit for a rebate and sign up for your new T-Mobile ID.

If you’re switching from Verizon or US Cellular, T-Mobile is willing to pay off your current balance before you bring your Samsung phone to its network. If you’re switching from one of the other five carriers, you’ll be able to submit for a rebate and sign up with T-Mobile after you pay off your device and send a screenshot of your device payment plan balance.

You can check T-Mobile’s new offer for details on what exactly is required when switching networks from another carrier. As usual, terms and conditions apply.

All signs point at Samsung preparing One UI 4.0 for public release soon

As you likely heard by now, the third Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta update is now rolling out to beta testers in more countries. The latest release addresses some bugs and issues but isn’t as feature-rich as the first beta build. This might sound disappointing at first, but in reality, it suggests that Samsung’s beta firmware for the Galaxy S21 series is almost ready for a public release.

In fact, even though the latest changelog doesn’t seem very exciting, there’s one line, in particular, that seems to be hinting that the public One UI 4.0 beta build is almost ready for release. According to the new changelog, the third One UI 4.0 beta update is based on Google AOSP — the final Android 12 release.

This technically means that the underlying Android OS sitting under the latest One UI beta build is based on live Android 12 firmware. And if Samsung is done with that part, only certain issues related to One UI 4.0 stand between us and the first public build. In addition, the third One UI 4.0 beta build is accompanied by the November 2021 security patch, which will be included in the final release should it roll out next month.

Samsung previously said it wants to release Android 12 and One UI 4.0 before the end of 2021, and a community manager later hinted that a public release could happen as early as November. Given that the third One UI 4.0 beta update was based on the final Android 12 release, Samsung could soon close the beta program and launch One UI 4.0 for the masses. Time will tell, so stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted as soon as we find out more.

Galaxy Tab S8 design looks sleek from all angles in first high-res renders

We didn’t get any new phones or tablets at the latest Galaxy Unpacked 2 event, but even so, Samsung is working on a handful of new mobile devices that should be coming to the market in the following months. The Galaxy Tab S8 flagship tablet is one of them, and it was recently imagined in high-quality renders for the first time (via @OnLeaks / Zouton). Check out the gallery below for a closer look.

The renders aren’t officially from Samsung, so they might not be entirely accurate, but they seem to have been based on leaked dimensions and specifications. In other words, even if they might not be 100% accurate, this is probably as close as we’ll ever get to discovering the final design before the official unveiling, outside of looking at leaked official press renders.

Borrowing design cues from the Galaxy Tab S6 and Tab S7

According to these renders, the Galaxy Tab S8 looks almost identical to the Galaxy Tab S7. The bezels look similarly sized, though previous rumors claim that the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra — which has yet to be leaked in renders — could benefit from thinner bezels thanks to the use of BRS (Border Reduction Structure) technology.

As for the base Galaxy Tab S8 variant, it seems to have a dual-camera setup that looks a lot like the one you’ll find on the back of the Galaxy Tab S7. In fact, the main design detail differentiating the two tablets lies in the location of the magnetic S Pen holder. For the Galaxy Tab S8, the S Pen area no longer blends in with the camera housing, and in a way, it looks more similar to the Galaxy Tab S6.

The launch of the Galaxy Tab S8 series remains somewhat questionable due to the global semiconductor shortage, and rumor has it that the Ultra model might be very difficult to find. We should be finding out more in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

Third Galaxy S21 One UI 4.0 beta update is out now in more countries

Samsung began seeding the third One UI 4.0 beta update in South Korea earlier this week. Today, it looks like the company went ahead and released the same update in more markets where the Android 12 beta program is open to Galaxy S21 users.

This is the third Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta firmware Samsung has released this year, though, in some markets that have skipped the first One UI 4.0 beta, this counts as the second Android 12-based release.

Regardless, the new beta build is focused mainly on fixing bugs. You might find some new tweaks here and there, and certain 1st party apps — like Samsung Weather — seem to have gone through some UI changes. Overall, it’s more of the same as the previous beta build, only better. At least in theory, as there’s never a certainty when it comes to pre-release software.

The November 2021 security patch is part of One UI 4.0 beta 3

Aside from the various fixes, both under the hood and to the visible UI, Samsung has included the November 2021 security patch with the latest beta build. The latest security update has yet to be detailed by Google or Samsung, but the changelog will likely be revealed early next month.

The new One UI 4.0 beta update is now rolling out in countries where the beta program is open. If you haven’t applied to join the beta program yet and would like to change that, you can register by following our step-by-step guide.

Samsung Galaxy A53 color variants revealed by new leak

Given that the Galaxy A52s is still hot off the presses, it is a tad too early to talk about its successor, the Galaxy A53. A previous report told us that it would recycle the main camera module of its predecessor, but not much else. Now, the same source, Galaxyclub.nl, has shed some more light on what the Galaxy A53 could have in store for us.

It seems that the Galaxy A53 will be available in a total of four colour variants: black, white, light blue, and orange. The report adds that these colours are, for the most part, confirmed and that there could be new variants added once the smartphone is due to be launched sometime in Q1, 2022.

The Galaxy A53 could be more than just an incremental upgrade over the Galaxy A52s

Until now, most Galaxy A50 series smartphones have offered little in the way of upgrades over their immediate successors. Although the Galaxy A53 is slated to reuse the same primary camera module as the Galaxy A52s, it could bring forth significant improvements on other fronts, such as the SoC.

We learned earlier that Samsung was planning to use Exynos chips in more of its devices and that the Galaxy A53 and Galaxy A73 could be at the receiving end of the said hardware. Samsung could, in all likelihood, unveil new mid-range Exynos chipsets alongside the flagship Exynos 2200. Some of them could get an AMD Radeon GPU, too.

Samsung to build its first EV battery plant in the US

Following the rumors from earlier this week, Samsung has announced that it will enter the North American EV battery space by building its first battery plant in the US. The company has signed a joint venture with carmaker Stellantis for its upcoming battery plant. Samsung SDI will finally be able to better compete with its local rivals LG Energy and SK On in the US.

Samsung SDI and Stellantis will begin producing battery cells and modules for electric vehicles in the first half of 2025. The South Korean firm said in its press release that its annual production capacity would be around 23GWh, and in the future, that will increase to 40GWh. These batteries will be used in Stellantis’ plug-in hybrid and pure EV cars sold in Canada, Mexico, and the US.

While the company didn’t reveal the investment amount for its first EV battery plant in the US, experts claim that billions of dollars will be spent. The exact name and location of the joint venture are yet to be announced.

Jeon Young-hyun, president of Samsung SDI, said, “I am delighted to announce a joint venture with Stellantis, which is accelerating its electrification strategy in line with the eco-friendly era. We will do our best to provide the highest level of satisfaction to our customers in the electric vehicle market.

Stellantis is a great auto partner for Samsung SDI’s future in the electric vehicle space

Stellantis was created as a parent company of US-based Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and French automobile brand PSA Groupe which merged earlier this year. Hence, Stellantis is a strong partner for Samsung SDI as it owns various car brands, including Citroen, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, and Maserati. The South Korean battery maker, which is among the biggest globally, has already been supplying batteries for Fiat 500e and Jeep Wrangler 4xe.

Stellantis had already announced a mega plan with an investment of around $34.9 billion by 2025 for the electrification of its automobile lineup and software development.

Samsung SDI was the only battery firm that did not have a local battery factory in the US. Its rivals LG Energy and SK On had collaborated with General Motors and Ford, respectively, to build their battery plants in the US. Samsung has three other battery plants in China (Xi’an), Hungary, and South Korea (Ulsan).
