Over 10 million Android users lose hundreds of millions of Euros to Trojan

A newfound Android Trojan has reportedly stolen millions of Euros from over 10 million Android smartphone users globally, reveals a new report by security research team Zimperium zLabs. The damage could be in the hundreds of millions of Euros.

GriftHorse — as named by Zimperium zLabs — is a Trojan attack that uses malicious Android OS apps to take advantage of user interactions and trick them into signing up for a hidden premium service.

Upon infecting an Android smartphone, the Trojan starts sending alert pop-ups about a fictional prize. These pop-ups reappear roughly five times an hour until the user taps the notification to accept the offer. The malware then redirects the victim to a geo-specific webpage where they’re asked to leave their phone number for verification.

In turn, the page uses that phone number to submit it to a premium SMS service that charges the owner over 30 Euros every month. GriftHorse has targeted users in over 70 countries.

How to avoid these malicious GriftHorse apps?

According to the research team, GriftHorse attacks began around November 2020 through malicious apps that were initially distributed through the Google Play Store as well as other third-party app stores.

The good news is that Google is aware of the problem and has already removed the malicious apps from the Play Store. The problem, however, is that malicious GriftHorse apps still exist on third-party websites and unsecured repositories. So if you are going to side-load an app, at least make sure you obtained it from a reputable source.

Now that the GriftHorse malware was publicly disclosed, it’s likely that Google and other store owners already took action against it, so you probably need not worry about your phone’s security when downloading apps from the Google Play Store or the Galaxy Store. But as always, you should be making sure that your Galaxy device has the latest security patch available.

Previously, Zimperium zLabs discovered one of the “most sophisticated” Android malware that was distributed through a malicious app called “System Update.”

Everything we know so far about the Galaxy S22 flagship lineup

The Galaxy S22 flagship series is likely to be announced in January 2022, one year after the Galaxy S21 lineup’s debut. Or perhaps it will go on sale this year, as some rumors claim. Regardless, the Galaxy S22 trio remains shrouded in mystery, at least for the time being, though various leaks and rumors in recent months may have already shed a bit of light on the upcoming series.

Nothing has been officially confirmed thus far, but rumors keep coming in and chances are at least some of them are correct. So without further ado, below you will find everything we know — or think we know — about the Galaxy S22 series. Keep in mind that the list is not final and will be updated as more details surface.

Galaxy S22 series display specs

Earlier rumors indicate that the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ will have slightly smaller displays than the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+, respectively. The same rumors suggest that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will retain a 6.8-inch display diagonal and be the only model from the trio to benefit from an LTPO backplane.

The Galaxy S22 display is rumored to measure 6.06-to-6.1 inches, while the Galaxy S22+ is said to have a panel that measures anywhere between 6.5 and 6.6 inches. Resolution and refresh rate details are unknown, but it’s almost a given that all three flagship models will boast 120Hz refresh rate capabilities.

Galaxy S22 series camera specs

The Galaxy S22 series might be Samsung’s first to adopt sensor-shift camera technology similar to the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This technology stabilizes the camera’s sensor instead of the lens, which leads to improved image quality and better stabilization.

In addition to this, the Galaxy S22 could be the company’s first flagship series to feature cameras that were developed with the help of Japanese optics manufacturer Olympus, though the exact purpose of this alleged collaboration — if it exists in the firs place — is unclear.

Other reports suggest that the Galaxy S22 series won’t be equipped with a ToF sensor, as Samsung believes that this technology doesn’t have enough use cases yet. Furthermore, UDC (Under-Display Camera) technology debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in August, but it’s unlikely for the Galaxy S22 series to utilize it.

The base Galaxy S22 model and the Galaxy S22+ are rumored to feature a 10MP telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom and a 50MP main camera. And although the camera setup probably won’t see massive upgrades in some areas, it could boast one major improvement through continuous zoom capabilities. There are speculations that the Galaxy S22 Ultra model will feature a 200MP camera — possibly the ISOCELL HP1 unveiled in September.

Update 1: The Galaxy S22 Ultra was later rumored to feature a 108MP camera similar to its predecessor.

Update 2: Early unofficial renders indicate that the Galaxy S22 series will have a standard Infinity-O selfie camera cutout. In addition, Olympus reportedly denied its rumored involvement with the Galaxy S22 series.

Galaxy S22 series hardware specs

Samsung’s upcoming flagship series is expected to be released with an Exynos chipset in some markets and a solution provided by Qualcomm in others.

On one hand there’s the unannounced Snapdragon 898 chipset, said to feature a Cortex X2 CPU core, three Cortex A710 cores, and three Cortex A510 cores.

On the Exynos side of things, the upcoming Exynos 2200 SoC could become the first chipset developed by Samsung to boast AMD graphics, the latter of which would greatly improve graphics performance.

This chipset is built by Samsung Foundry on a 5nm process and is said to be fit for both smartphones and laptops.

In terms of batteries, there are clues hinting at the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra having 3,800mAh, 4,500mAh, and 5,000mAh batteries, respectively. And of course, all three phones should support fast charging and wireless charging.

Update 1: The Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S22 was benchmarked online and it didn’t perform as well as the Exynos model in preliminary tests.

Update 2: Separate reports indicate that the Galaxy S22 series will employ smaller batteries than the ongoing flagship models. The Galaxy S22 and S22+ will reportedly have 3,700mAh and 4,500mAh batteries, respectively.

Update 3: The Galaxy S22 Ultra is likely powered by a 5,000mAh battery, this time with 45W fast-charging.

Samsung may reshuffle some Exynos and Qualcomm markets

Interestingly enough, Samsung is rumored to bring Qualcomm to Exynos markets and vice versa for the first time in the Galaxy S history. The Galaxy S22 lineup could launch with the Snapdragon 898 in India, while Verizon Wireless may want to bring the Exynos 2200 model to the USA.

Galaxy S22 series design

We’re not sure where Samsung will push the design of its Galaxy S lineup next, and this is in large part because it’s too early to tell. Samsung doesn’t seem to have decided on all the design aspects of the Galaxy S22 series, but more details are bound to leak eventually. Fan renders exist, though they are based largely on speculation.

For now, there’s one rumor suggesting that Samsung is thinking about employing polycarbonate for the back panels of both the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ while reserving Gorilla Glass for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This could lead to lower production costs and launch prices for the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+.

This is a developing story that will be updated with new bits of information, leaks, and rumors as they emerge, so make sure you bookmark it and check back regularly if you want to stay up to date with the Galaxy S22 series.

Update 1: The first unofficial renders based on leaked information emerged. They reveal a Galaxy S22 Ultra model with a dedicated S Pen slot, squarer corners, and an arguably outdated camera housing design.

Update 2: Similar renders depicting the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ have emerged as well. According to these images, they use the camera housing design language as the Galaxy S21 series.

Update 3: Photos of third-party cases for the Galaxy S22 series emerged, confirming many design details that were seen in the aforementioned renders.

Galaxy S22 Ultra series naming

Every bit of recent evidence indicates that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will have a dedicated S Pen slot just like a Galaxy Note flagship. Because of this, some reports said the phone will be renamed and hit the shelves as the Galaxy Note 22 Ultra. But according to new bits of information, this isn’t the case, and the flagship will go on sale bearing the “Galaxy S22 Ultra” moniker.

Banner ads in Samsung Pay and Samsung Health finally removed

Samsung has an annoying habit of promoting its own services across its entire smartphone lineup. While it is understandable on some low-cost devices, there is no legitimate reason for it to run ads on high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy S21 Ultra. The worst part is, there is no way to switch off said ads. Thankfully, Samsung has taken notice of it and is in the process of disabling ads in some of its apps.

Someone on the official Samsung community forums in South Korea noticed that the banner ads on the Samsung Pay app were gone. Similarly, Samsung Health will also be rid of ads starting on October 1.

Hopefully, Samsung will also rid other Stock apps of ads in the coming weeks. The decision is a tad overdue, given that fans, enthusiasts and influencers alike have lambasted Samsung for its egregious ads that often clog up the notification bar.

Do note that the above change only applies to the South Korean firmware. Users outside of the country may have to wait a bit longer before they can enjoy a completely ad-free experience. Nonetheless, it is a step in the right direction and we can only hope that Samsung gets around to it sooner rather than later.

Two good things about the iPhone Samsung needs to copy

The new iPhones are out, and one of my friends was able to pick up the iPhone 13 Pro Max on launch day before stocks ran out everywhere. The new iPhones are pretty exciting whether or not you’re an iPhone user, and I coaxed my friend into lending me his phone for a couple of days so I could check out how things are on the other side of the isle.

The last and only time I used an iPhone was back in 2016, and I found iOS incredibly restrictive and less conducive to getting things done quickly compared to Android. And while iOS is no longer as restrictive as it used to be, it’s still a little too different for long-time Android users and takes some time getting used to.

Of course, I’m not supposed to be getting used to it, as Android and Samsung are where my heart lies. Just two days into using the iPhone 13 Pro Max, I’m already itching to get back to the Galaxy S21 Ultra that I have sitting on my desk (partly because my brand new Galaxy Watch 4 doesn’t support the iPhone).

But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like some things about the iPhone, and there are two that I wish Samsung would copy as soon as it possibly can.

Louder, punchier stereo speakers

Samsung introduced stereo speakers to its flagships a couple of years after Apple, and all this time later, Samsung’s implementation of them isn’t as good. I mean, it’s great if you don’t have an iPhone to compare it to, but put them side by side and the iPhone’s advantage becomes clear.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max’s stereo speakers are louder, and there’s more bass, too. I watch a lot of videos on the phone without connecting earphones to it, and the iPhone is better suited for that. Again, Samsung’s speakers also sound great, but they aren’t as good as the iPhone’s, and I hope it’s something Samsung can address going forward.

Get rid of the camera lag Samsung, please!

The lag in the camera app on the Galaxy S21 series is well documented, with Samsung even attempting to fix it with a software update after we reported how bad things can get (especially when zooming in and out). But just a few minutes with the iPhone and you realize how far Samsung has to go to make its camera experience smooth as it should be.

From how quickly the iPhone responds when you long press the shutter button in Photo mode to start recording videos to how fast it switches between camera modes, it’s just all round better than on any Samsung flagship, including the Galaxy S21 Ultra. I think the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s camera quality is better (and its zoom prowess is unbeatable), but the speed and fluidity of the camera app leave a lot to be desired.

Is there anything about the iPhone that you wish you had on your Galaxy smartphone? Let me know down in the comments!

Best Samsung Phones in October 2021 – Picked by experts

Given the sheer number of devices that it releases every year, finding the best Samsung phones can often prove to be a challenge for most customers. It doesn’t matter if you want a flagship or a budget device. Samsung offers plenty of options for all price ranges.

To make it easier for you to find the one that best suits your needs, our expert reviewers have created this list of the best Samsung smartphones. We’ll explain precisely why a device has made it on to our list and provide you with links to their detailed reviews. This will help you cut through the noise and really find out what is the best Samsung phone.

Our Best Samsung Phone List For October 2021

Our list for October 2021 has a great mix of devices, helped by the launch of Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldable smartphones. We have also included some of the good Samsung phones in the mid-range and affordable categories that are currently available.

Best Samsung Phone – Spec monster: Galaxy S21 Ultra

The Galaxy S21 Ultra has big shoes to fill. It follows the Galaxy S20 Ultra which was Samsung’s everything and the kitchen sink phone. Last year’s flagship was packed to the gills with the best that Samsung had to offer. It’s a similar story for the Galaxy S21 Ultra as it remains the company’s undisputed spec monster.

Samsung’s latest high-end flagship features a 6.8-inch display with a 10Hz to 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is capable of hitting the 120Hz refresh rate at the highest WQHD+ resolution. Depending on the market, the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be available with an Exynos 2100 or Snapdragon 888 chipset. It’s paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage. No external expansion is possible as the device doesn’t have a microSD card slot.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra retains its predecessor’s 5,000mAh battery. It does get an updated camera setup which includes two telephoto (zoom) cameras capable of achieving 100x Space Zoom. It also gets a whole host of new software features that take full advantage of the camera setup’s capabilities.

There’s even support for the S Pen. The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the first non-Note Galaxy device to get the S Pen. However, one doesn’t ship with the device. You’ll need to buy it separately in addition to a case that lets you carry the S Pen because it doesn’t slide inside the smartphone.

Samsung has once again set the benchmark for the rest of the Android manufacturers. This handset will remain the best Galaxy phone to be released this year. No other Samsung handset due in 2021 will have the kind of specs that this does. Looking beyond what’s under the hood, the Galaxy S21 Ultra also has exceptional build quality and a great design.

Reasons to buy: Powerful cameras, great battery life, exceptional display and top-notch performance.

Who should buy: Loyal Samsung fans, mobile gaming enthusiasts, mobile photographers and vloggers.

Best Samsung Phone – Productivity: Galaxy Note 20 Ultra

There’s no question about it, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra tops our list as the best Samsung phone for productivity. Samsung has made a number of meaningful improvements to its latest flagship smartphone, particularly the S Pen upgrades. The S Pen latency has been dropped to 9ms in order to provide a more fluid and natural experience with the stylus.

The 6.9-inch Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also comes with the latest in smartphone technology as well as 5G support. It happens to be the first Samsung smartphone to feature a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate display.

This is actually the first time that a Samsung phone has had a variable refresh rate. The Galaxy Note 20’s display switches between 10Hz, 30Hz, 60Hz and 120Hz. It depends on whatever’s being shown on the screen. This is done to save power by not using the maximum refresh rate in circumstances where it’s not necessary. Pretty neat.

Samsung has also significantly improved the camera setup compared to its predecessor. There are several new software features and new camera modes that enable customers to get the most out of this $1,299 flagship. All of this makes the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra stand out as one of the top Samsung phones of 2021.

Reasons to buy: Best display on a smartphone, wireless DeX, gorgeous design, enhanced camera functionality and great battery life.

Who should buy: Customers who want the latest Samsung phones, power users, mobile gamers, vloggers and content creators.

Best Samsung Phone – Compact: Galaxy S20 FE

Samsung is out with a new Fan Edition model this year. The Galaxy S20 FE packs many of the best features of the Galaxy S20 series into a more compact package. It uses the same flagship-level chipsets, a 120Hz refresh rate display and a respectable 4,500mAh battery. Samsung has replaced the glass back with plastic and that’s actually a good thing.

The 6.5-inch flat display is great for those who don’t particularly like curved displays. The two 12-megapixel cameras offers similar results as the Galaxy S20+ and it even comes with an 8-megapixel telephoto camera that provides 3x lossless optical zoom. Samsung has also confirmed that it will receive three years of Android OS upgrades. For all of the amazing tech that it offers, the $699 price tag for the 5G variant of the Galaxy S20 FE makes it one of the best value Samsung phones to buy this year.

It’s a good move by the company to offer the Galaxy S20 FE. This enables it to compete against rivals that offer premium, near-flagship like devices for far less than what a traditional flagship would cost. The Galaxy S20 FE allows Samsung to go after those customers as well. That’s what makes it worthy of a place among the top rated Samsung phones of the year.

Reasons to buy: Great design, well-built, great performance, flat AMOLED display and three years of OS upgrades.

Who should buy: Customers who want a flagship-level phone for less, those who don’t want to be worried about breaking the glass back.

Best Samsung Phone – Foldable: Galaxy Z Fold 3

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the latest and greatest foldable smartphone from Samsung. While it appears to be similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, there’s a lot in this new device to be excited about.

Both the 6.2-inch cover and 7.6-inch Infinity Flex display have a 120Hz refresh rate. They’re also 29% brighter than the previous model. The foldable display is now 80% stronger than before. This is Samsung’s first foldable smartphone to support the S Pen on its internal display.

The hinge has added durability and Flex Mode which allows the hinge to free stand at different angles so that the phone can effectively become its own tripod. You can even wirelessly charge it like that!

Samsung has used its toughest aluminium yet for the device’s body. This is also the world’s first foldable smartphone that’s water-resistant. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

The Snapdragon 888 powers this flagship Samsung phone with 12GB of RAM as standard. It’s available with 256GB and 512GB of non-expandable storage options. This is Samsung’s most feature-packed and powerful foldable smartphone yet. Granted, the cameras could have been better, but the Galaxy Z Fold 3 more than makes up for that in other departments.

It goes without saying that the Galaxy Z Fold 3 deserves a place on this list. It’s truly shaping up to be one of the best Samsung phones ever made.

Reasons to buy: Water resistance, S Pen support, great performance and useful features.

Who should buy: Power users, loyal Samsung fans, hype beasts and influencers.

Best Samsung Phone – Mid-range: Galaxy A52

Samsung has revolutionized its mid-range offerings with the Galaxy A52. The successor to the very successful Galaxy A51 brings several notable improvements. The Galaxy A52 undoubtedly stands out as one of the best Samsung mid-range smartphones in 2021. It features a brand new design while the 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display has a 90Hz refresh rate. The 5G variant of the Galaxy A52 features a 120Hz refresh rate.

Best Samsung Phone – Budget: Galaxy A32

The Galaxy A32 is a solid budget smartphone from Samsung. It features a 6.40inch Super AMOLED display with a MediaTek Helio G80 chipset with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. The chipset is a bit slow for heavy tasks but that’s to be expected from a device in this price range.

It’s a great budget smartphone nonetheless. The AMOLED display is great and the camera setup is actually decent. The 5,000mAh battery is also a big plus point.

Reasons to buy: AMOLED display, refreshed design, 5,000mAh battery, good camera performance.

Who should buy: Budget smartphone buyers and those who need great battery life.

Why These Are The Best Samsung Phones This Month

Samsung’s strategy has long been to offer something for everyone. We now have one of Samsung’s most diverse smartphone lineups. You have an absolute spec king in the Galaxy S21 Ultra to the extent of being over the top. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is certainly one of the best Note devices yet from Samsung as it builds on the feedback from Note loyalists and provides them with improvements they have long been asking for.

The Galaxy Z Flip is in a league of its own when it comes to foldable smartphones. There’s really no true successor for it on the market yet. The Galaxy S20 FE may have been out for almost a year now but it’s still a great value for the kind of specs it offers.

Samsung has capitalized on the Galaxy A50’s popularity for the Galaxy A51 and made it a worthy successor. Now, the Galaxy A52 is one of the best mid-range smartphones on the market. The Galaxy A52 does everything that you’d expect a device of its caliber to do without breaking a sweat. Lastly, customers won’t have much to complain about with the Galaxy A32.
