Samsung and LG smartwatches aren’t really keeping your data secure

Researchers based at the University of New Haven have demonstrated how a user’s personal information can be extracted from the Gear 2 Neo by Samsung and LG’s G Watch. From the Gear 2 Neo the researchers were able to extract email, messages, health and contacts data, none of which was encrypted on the smartwatch.

Director of the university’s Cyber Forensics Research and Education Group Ibrahim Baggili said that it wasn’t very difficult to obtain the data from these smartwatches, “but expertise and research was required.” Baggili plans to present the team’s findings along with co-authors Jeff Oduru, Frank Breitinger, Glenn McGee and Kyle Anthony at a digital forensics conference in August. They were able to extract data from the smartwatches by going through the watches’ files and locating traces of watch activity on the Android powered Samsung smartphone that they were linked to.

With smartwatches increasingly becoming popular one would think that the companies making them would take extra care to ensure that users’ data remained safe even if they were to lose their smartwatch. In a statement provided to CNET, Samsung said that it “takes consumer privacy and security very seriously and our products are designed with privacy in mind. If at any time we identify a potential vulnerability, we act promptly to investigate and resolve the issue.” Though Baggili has a few words of wisdom for people who wear smartwatches, he says don’t forget your smartwatch the next time you are taking a shower at the gym, your data is not as safe as you might think.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition could be in the works

The Galaxy Grand Prime has been a considerable hit in emerging markets despite going up against more feature-packed yet cheaper smartphones from Chinese manufacturers, and Samsung could soon launch a new variant of the device. Expected to be called Galaxy Grand Prime Value Edition, there is no information on the phone except for a live picture and possible certification in Taiwan with model number SM-G531Y, though it’s possible the Value Edition will feature most of the same specs but top things off by running Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box.

The original Galaxy Grand Prime is set to be updated to Android 5.0, and we exclusively previewed an early build on the device. In terms of specs, it featured a 5-inch qHD (960×540 pixels) display, a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor with four cores, an 8-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera, LTE connectivity, 8GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, and a 2,600 mAh battery. It ran Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box, and also featured NFC connectivity on some models.

You might soon get to see dual-rear camera setups on Samsung phones

HTC’s experiment with a dual rear camera setup on the M8 might not have proven as (commercially) beneficial to the company as its bossed may have expected, but the experiment opened doors to an all new arrangement of imaging sensors which was later adopted by many other companies. Quite a few phones ship with dual rear cameras, but to say that they can’t be done without would be going too far ahead of ourselves.

Samsung has been rather innovative in the recent years, especially with its edge screens. From what we’re hearing, Samsung, along with arch-rivals Apple might soon ship phones with dual rear cameras — that is, if the their tests which are said to be underway bear fruit.

Dual rear cameras allow for a new degree of sensing to be introduced to imaging. HTC, for example, used the second camera to calculate depth which allowed for a myriad of customization features on the M8, especially ones which dealt with depth-of-field.

Patent shows an advanced Samsung tablet with a huge foldable display

Samsung has been rather busy working on smartphone and tablet designs with foldable displays for a long time, and as we exclusively revealed recently, the most recent project that could make it to the market is Project Valley, a smartphone that might have dual screens and could also be foldable. But even generally, Samsung has applied for a ton of patents surrounding foldable displays and devices, and a one-and-a-half years old patent discovered by GalaxyClub shows an advanced foldable tablet display that could fold up to two times to form a single device.

According to the patent, this device could unfold into three parts, though it’s unclear how much of it wold be the display – would the entire front side act as a huge display, or would the bottom part act as a keyboard? Naturally, this design looks too advanced to be implemented on a considerable scale anytime soon, but it gives us a good insight at the various ideas and prototypes Samsung engineers keep working on behind closed doors.

What do you think about a three-part foldable tablet?

Android Auto updated with support for the Galaxy S4 and S5 on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint

The Android Auto app has received a new update which brings support for two of the most popular flagship handsets from Samsung in recent years. It adds support for the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S5 on Verizon, AT&T and Sprint, three of the largest mobile carriers in the United States. Millions of people who own these handsets in the United States can now use them with Android Auto in the car.

For those who are unaware, Android Auto is an extension of Google’s mobile operating system into the car. Users can plug in their devices and get turn-by-turn navigation, phone calls and messaging through the dashboard of their car. The Android Auto interface is optimized in a way that doesn’t require the driver to take their eyes off the road. It surfaces information about traffic, weather, messages and much more through cards that surface on the display. Over 35 car makers currently support Android Auto which some third party apps such as WhatsApp, Spotify and Skype have also confirmed support for the platform. Third party Android Auto systems are also available for installation in vehicles that don’t feature  it as a stock option.

Samsung Galaxy A7 available for purchase in the US through Amazon

Samsung has released the Galaxy A7 in multiple markets across the globe but it hasn’t officially released the handset in the United States. Customers who wish to pick one up can’t really head to their carrier’s local store and just walk out with a unit, the only option really available to them up till now was to import the device from a market where it’s available. Now though the Galaxy A7 is available for purchase in the country via Amazon.

The Galaxy A7 is Samsung’s thinnest smartphone yet, coming in at 151 x 76.2 x 6.3 mm. It features a 5.5-inch 1080×1920 pixel resolution display, an octa-core Exynos 5430 processor under the hood with 2GB RAM, 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as well as 16GB of internal storage and a 2,600mAh battery. Samsung Galaxy A7 can now be purchased through Amazon where it’s being sold by a third-party seller, potential customers should keep in mind that the units being sold have dual-SIM support and don’t feature LTE. Only HSDPA is available which will work with AT&T and T-Mobile in the US. It’s priced at $444 with free shipping.

Galaxy Note 5 will reportedly feature a USB Type-C port

Samsung is not due to launch the Galaxy Note 5 before September this year but already there are countless rumors and reports about what we can expect from the company’s next flagship device. A new report claims that the Galaxy Note 5 is going to have a USB Type-C port, a first for the company’s mobile devices, which will exponentially increase data transfer speeds to and from the Galaxy Note 5.

USB 3.1 Type-C offers a transfer rate of 10Gbps which is double that of the much more common USB 3.0 standard, Type-C cables also offer 20 volts and 5 amps of power as opposed to 5 volts and 1.8 amps of its predecessor. This means users won’t have to wait for as long as they previously did for data transfer and charging. Another major advantage of USB Type-C is the fact that there’s no “right” way to plug the cable into the port, it’s reversible, so users don’t have to fiddle around with the cable. They can plug it straight in and be on their way.

Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note 5 at IFA 2015 in Berlin this September. The handset may feature a 2K or 4K Super AMOLED display with S Pen, an octa-core Exynos 7422 processor and possibly a 4100mAh battery.
