The Galaxy Note 5 is the most complete Samsung Galaxy flagship ever

I hated the Galaxy Note 4. Hate isn’t the word my colleagues here at SamMobile will use, but none of them were fans of the Note 4 either. The hardware was great, but the laggy software was what ruined the device when it launched, and Samsung’s abysmal software support further sealed the deal in making the Note 4 one of the most disappointing flagship smartphones from the Korean giant.

Great hardware has never been an issue with the Note lineup. The most top-notch hardware on the market has what has always separated the Note series from the rest, and this year, Samsung’s focus on a cleaner and optimized software experience has resulted in the Galaxy Note 5 being the most complete flagship Galaxy phone in my opinion.

Read MoreSamsung Galaxy Note 5 Review: The best phablet flagship your money can buy

There might not be a microSD card slot or a removable battery, but the Note 5 manages to do well in all the important aspects. The display is stunning, the camera is the best there is in the industry, the phone is screaming fast no matter what you throw at it, the design is as premium as it gets, the S Pen can let you be really productive, and battery life is pretty good as well (though not as good as it was on the Note II, or even the Note 3.) But as I mentioned earlier, it’s the software that really helps make the Note 5 be the complete package it is.

Why? Well, because in this day and age, everyone expects their smartphone to be smooth and fast, especially when they pay upwards of $800 for it. It’s not like people didn’t expect that last year, but at the time manufacturers were able to get away with laggy software rather easily, and Google also hadn’t done enough make Android as optimized as it is today (it’s not totally bug-free, but that’s another story.)

But the advent of low-cost smartphones like the Moto G or the OnePlus One, which offered a nice user experience despite their low price tags, has changed the landscape. Samsung knew this, and we saw its first step towards heavy optimization on the software front with the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. Things have gotten even better with the Note 5, which looks more and more like it will manage to stay smooth even after a few months of usage, something that wasn’t true for the S6 lineup for many users. Add to that the features of the S Pen, and the Note 5 delivers a software experience that’s worth all the praise it can get.

Once again, the lack of two important features – expandable storage and a removable battery – might have put off some Galaxy Note fans (and also the fact that the Note 5 isn’t available in many markets), but there’s no denying the fact that the Note 5 manages to do all the important things very well. Note devices have always had the best hardware upon launch, and Samsung’s improved TouchWiz UX combines with top-of-the-line specs to make the Note 5 the complete flagship the company has ever made.

Samsung reportedly spending $25 million on Rihanna’s new album and upcoming tour

In what appears to be one of the biggest music and marketing tie-ups in recent memory a report claims that Samsung will be sponsoring Rihanna’s new album and upcoming tour to the tune of $25 million. According to the report both camps have been negotiating on the deal for seven months which covers Rihanna’s upcoming album reportedly titled “Anti” and the subsequent world tour, her eighth studio album is expected to be released in the next few weeks.

It’s interesting to note that Rihanna is signed to Jay Z’s Roc Nation label, the rap mogul has had a long partnership with Samsung, and was recently spotted leaving Samsung’s offices in Silicon Valley. This led many to believe that perhaps he was trying to sell his music streaming service Tidal to Samsung but the New York Post suggests he was finalizing the Rihanna partnership. For $25 million Samsung will likely get Rihanna to promote its Galaxy smartphones and may even get exclusive content from the singer to promote its Milk Music service, the company is said to be integrally involved with Rihanna’s tour so concert attendees can expect to see a lot of Samsung branding when they head out to the shows.

Samsung continues to trim workforce as it looks to further cut costs

Over the past few months there have been multiple reports that Samsung is downsizing its workforce as it wants to cut down on costs, at one point such reports were rubbished by the company, only for one to surface from China claiming that the company was cutting 1,000 jobs in the People’s Republic. According to a new report out of Korea the company is firing managerial-level workers and executives to further cut down on costs. A Samsung official cited in the report says that the company’s top priority is to save costs, “Average workers with mediocre performance are being advised to leave the company with a sizable compensation,” the official says.

The official adds that this latest downsize corresponds to a plan to reduce workforce in countries where Samsung operates manufacturing plants, with human resource officials at those units said to be meeting with employees to persuade them to join the “voluntary retirement system.” It’s unclear how much of its workforce Samsung is going to trim, industry watchers are of the view that Samsung Electronics may let go up to 30 percent of its workforce concentrated in marketing, finance and human resource divisions. This move comes at a time when Samsung has posted its first quarterly operating profit growth after seven straight quarters of decline and the initiation of a massive $9.9 billion share buyback program. The scribe reached Samsung for an on-the-record comment on this matter but the company said it had no comment about layoff plans.

Activate Samsung Pay by November 8 and get a free wireless charger

Samsung Pay has been performing quite well in South Korea and the United States, the company recently announced that it will be adding support for even more banks and gift cards to the app, all while it tries to get even more people to start using its payments service. The company has announced a new promotion for folks who own the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5. All they have to do is activate Samsung Pay on their device by November 8 to receive a free wireless charger. All of these devices come with wireless charging built right in.

The company had launched a similar promotion for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ when Samsung Pay was originally launched a couple of months back, participants could choose between a wireless charger or a flip case, this time around the promotion is open to twice the number of compatible handsets but limited to just the wireless charger. Don’t expect the charger to be immediately shipped, the fine print says that this promotion is limited to 200,000 units and they won’t be shipped for at least 8-10 weeks. To take advantage of this promotion head over to Samsung’s website, enter your email and then follow the instructions to claim your free wireless charger.

Here’s what VLC looks like on a Tizen smartphone

VideoLAN’s VLC is undoubtedly one of the most popular media players available to the public and the fact that it’s open source and has support for almost every media format under the sun really shows why people love it so much. It’s already available on a wide variety of platforms across desktop and mobile so it was only a matter of time before VLC made its way to Tizen as well. Work on VLC for Tizen has been going on for some time and now we get our first look at what the versatile media player will look like on Samsung’s homegrown OS.

Ludovic Fauvet, a member of the team that’s developing this port, tweeted the images and revealed that work is progressing nicely and that the app should be available for download via the Tizen Store in the very near future. It’s going to be available as a free download, VLC has always been free, and comes with support for the Samsung Z1 and Samsung Z3 Tizen-powered smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy View hands-on pictures and first impression

SamMobile was at the BALR. Gear S2 launch yesterday in the Netherlands where we had a few minutes (20 minutes to be exact) with the Galaxy View. Samsung is describing it as a “Movable Display” and not a tablet. They told us that they are trying to set a new category once again, and we weren’t allowed to call it a tablet.

We had our hands-on time with a pre-production unit in lighting conditions far from ideal for a proper hands-on, so this is a first impression of the device. A detailed review will arrive once we get a proper review unit at our office.

Our actual first impression is something we can be very short about: this thing is humongous, monstrously big and heavy (2.65 kilos). It has an 18.4-inch Full HD display with a pixel density of around 119 ppi. Of course, the pixel density doesn’t matter in this case as the Galaxy View is being pitched as a movable TV. The display is unfortunately a TFT unit and not an AMOLED screen, and Samsung tells us this was a move made to reduce the cost.

The Galaxy View has a hinge on the back which can be used to carry it around; it works quite well, though the device is rather heavy. The stand at the back (the hinge is a part of this stand) can be used in two ways. One is to let the display stand up and the other is to let it lie down. The latter option isn’t that great as it can never lay flat on a table due to the speakers at the back (these speakers are quite loud as far as we could tell.)

We had very little time with the Galaxy View, but from what we saw the software was fluid and fast (lags and stutters are no longer a concern on Samsung’s software as long as the hardware isn’t too low-end, as the company optimized things starting with the Galaxy S6 earlier this year.) There is some kind of TV console built-in with all sorts of TV watching apps; there’s a gaming center present as well, with a nice feature that tells you which games are compatible with a gamepad.

The Galaxy View will soon be arriving in our office, so stay tuned for a detailed review of Samsung’s largest tablet first movable display.

Galaxy S5 is the police’s latest weapon in The Netherlands

Aside from carrying their usual slew of weapons which includes a baton, pepper spray and a firearm police in The Netherlands are getting a new weapon that’s not entirely as dangerous but will certainly go a long way in making their lives easier. Some 10,000 cops of the country’s National Police have received the Galaxy S5 which comes with custom software that allows them to tap into the police database to check personal data and also write digital fines. This makes it much easier for them to ascertain whether someone is telling the truth about their identity, they simply need to run a search in the app and find out if the person’s ID is genuine or fake.

Edwin Delwel of the National Police says that cops only have to enter a name and a birthdate in the system which then brings up additional information as well as a photograph within seconds thereby saving a lot of time and eliminating the possibility of being hoodwinked. From 2016 police will also be able to record declaration with the smartphone, for example if it’s a  burglary case the agent only needs to sign the ID card of the declarant, enter information about the incident, take photos and then have the declaration signed digitally which is then immediately sent to the victim via email.

Since the system will automatically pull in information from the database it means that the possibility of errors is reduced particularly when filing fines, officers will be able to hand out fines digitally by simply scanning the person’s ID card. The new system is being tested on a relatively small scale for now but by next year it will be expanded to cover some 33,000 police officers.

The Galaxy View costs $599 and arrives November 6

You might remember that we were the first ones to report earlier this year that Samsung had started developing an 18.4-inch Android tablet which the company later confirmed as the Galaxy View. It teased the tablet a couple of times and over the past month or so multiple reports came out and revealed much about the tablet. Yesterday Samsung formally announced the Galaxy View and confirmed its specifications, now we have the price and release date for this big tablet.

Customers in the United States will be able to purchase the Galaxy View from November 6 for $599, this is for the Wi-Fi only model, a LTE model is going to be sold through a carrier and if history has taught us anything it will most likely be AT&T. Pricing and availability for the LTE model will be confirmed by the carrier so there may be some wait involved. The Galaxy View is meant to be used purely for enjoying content on its large 18.4-inch full HD display, that’s what a major chuck of the $599 price tag buys, rest of the specifications aren’t really that spectacular since it has a 1.6GHz octacore processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage with external expansion via microSD card and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Samsung launches the Galaxy S6 edge+ Ant-Man Edition in China

Samsung partnered with Marvel to cross promote its movies through limited edition devices like the Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Edition that came with a special red-gold color scheme, an arc-reactor themed wireless charger, a custom theme, and an Avengers box. The company even released Avengers themed accessories for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge.

Now, the company has launched yet another limited edition superhero-themed variant of a Galaxy smartphone. Samsung has launched the Galaxy S6 edge+ Ant-Man edition in China today, and it was rumoured last week. However, there’s no special color scheme or a themed wireless charger that is being bundled with the device. It’s just a regular Galaxy S6 edge+, but it comes with an Ant-Man themed protective case, a box, and possibly an Ant-Man theme.

Also Read: A closer look at the Iron Man Galaxy S6 edge and its Iron Man theme

If you are in China, you can pick up the Galaxy S6 edge+ Ant-Man Edition by paying CNY 5,888 (~ $928). Bundling an Ant-Man themed case and a box is a nice touch, but it would have been much better if Samsung did a custom paint job for this ‘Limited Edition’ device, not to mention a custom-themed wireless charger. Hopefully, this device won’t be sold for as insane prices as the Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Edition did.

Samsung, the S Pen, and Steve Jobs: Intuitiveness Re-examined

How are we gonna communicate, ‘cause we don’t wanna carry around a mouse, right? So, what are we gonna do? Oh, a stylus, right? We’re gonna use a stylus. No. Who wants a stylus? You have to get ‘em and put ‘em away and you lose ‘em. Yuck! Nobody wants a stylus. So let’s not use a stylus. We’re gonna use the best pointing device in the world. We’re gonna use a pointing device that we’re all born with. We’re born with 10 of ‘em. We’re gonna use our fingers. We’re gonna touch this with our fingers. And we have invented a new technology called multitouch… – Steve Jobs, first iPhone announcement, 2007

It’s been said that you can’t put a price tag on intuitiveness. If a device is intuitive, if using it is as natural as opening a door, flicking a light switch on and off, pressing a button, etc., people will line up for it and buy it. That seems to be the magic that graced Steve Jobs’s career at Apple. As Apple’s former CEO, Steve Jobs left a legacy for a company that couldn’t have witnessed his rise at a better time. He was the true “Apple Genius,” and he passed away on Monday, October 5th, 2011 (four years ago). He changed the face of technology as we know it, and left the world of tech (and the world itself) a better place with his insight, knowledge, and his daring innovation.

When Steve Jobs announced the very first iPhone, Apple had a chance to incorporate a stylus. Yet, Steve Jobs refused to take this path. His reason? No one wants a stylus because you 1) have to take it out, 2) put it back when you’re finished, and 3) you can lose it. And, above these three reasons, we can’t forget the first from the quote: the stylus 4) serves as a communicator, like the mouse does to a computer. The stylus was inadequate because he believed that its slight inconveniences made it a terrible writing instrument with a smartphone. To Steve Jobs, then, the stylus wasn’t intuitive. It wasn’t natural. It was just an inconvenience. For him, the iPhone would never have a stylus. To this day, Steve Jobs’s legacy lives on – at least in Apple’s smartphone collection, anyway.

In light of Steve Jobs’s disgust over the stylus, one wonders why Samsung ever announced the first Galaxy Note with its S Pen and created the Note category. Sure, companies disagree with sound reasoning all the time, but was Samsung wrong in disagreeing with Steve Jobs? Is it the case that the only intuitive action on a smartphone is to use our fingers?

Call it a matter of having been in his particular context, but Steve Jobs was not entirely wrong. Even today, with the Galaxy Note5, we don’t use the S Pen to navigate the display. We don’t use the S Pen all the time to open apps, or type an email, set the alarm for the next morning, and so on. We don’t use the S Pen to open or use the camera, and we don’t need to use it when we’re simply catching up on news for the day. At the same time, however, the S Pen does have a place, a significance, in the smartphone experience that makes using only our fingers at times incomplete.

The S Pen does play the role of a mouse in the smartphone experience: Samsung’s own Smart Select, formerly called “S Pen as Mouse” in the Galaxy Note 4, allows users to copy and paste words and images simultaneously. This is the same function that the mouse performs with a computer. And yet, the S Pen, coupled with Samsung’s own unique software, accomplishes this wonderfully. The S Pen does exactly what a mouse does for a PC: it lets you copy and paste without having to copy words with one action and images with another. Smart Select lets you do two things at once.

And this doesn’t take into consideration the need to sign digital forms and documents. No one signs PDF forms with his or her fingers only; from an early age, it’s cute to paint with our fingers, but we’re taught to color in images with crayons and color pencils, to sign our names with a pencil or pen. Even in a technologically progressive age as ours, writing instruments are still useful and relevant. We still provide a physical signature to buy a home, testify to our sibling’s marriage on his or her marriage license, agree to a two-year contract with a carrier, and so on. And Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5, as has been the case with the Note line prior, continues the tradition of combining multitouch (the progressive) with the reality that the “old-school” notion of handwritten signatures is still valid and thriving. Keyboard strokes will never replace handwritten signatures; like fingerprints, no two of them are alike.

On the fourth anniversary of Steve Jobs’s death, we stop to ask the question: was Steve Jobs’s response to the stylus (and subsequently, Samsung’s S Pen) correct? Is the S Pen unintuitive and inconvenient? Not at all. The S Pen isn’t any more irrelevant than signing handwritten signatures in certain cases is irrelevant. Signing our names is an intuitive gesture that we learn from early on in life, and the Galaxy Note 5 continues Samsung’s tradition of merging the new digital age with reminiscences of the old one. Life is all about building bridges between the past and the future, and, as Apple may be learning with the Apple Pencil, new questions about intuitiveness require old answers.

Upcoming Galaxy A5 sequel (SM-A510F) gets Bluetooth SIG certification

Earlier this week, successors to the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A7 had their specifications revealed thanks to their appearance on the GFXBench benchmark. The Galaxy A5 is also set to get an upgrade along with the A3 and A7; it’s not listed on GFXBench yet, but it has just passed certification from Bluetooth SIG, clearing an important step every new smartphone has to take before making an official appearance.

The Bluetooh SIG has certified the SM-A510F only two days ago, but unfortunately we don’t get any information on the A5′s hardware. A listing on the import tracking site Zauba had mentioned a 5.2-inch display, which is slightly larger than the 5-inch display on the original A5 (the new A3 also has a larger screen than the previous A3, and also a higher display resolution.) Other specs are unknown at this point, but it shouldn’t be long before the fog lifts and we get all the juicy details.

Samsung beats Apple in smartphone sales during Q3 2015

Apple seems to be slacking behind Samsung in terms of smartphones sales according to a new report. During the quarter of July-September, Samsung sold 83.8 million smartphones, which accounts for 23.7 percent of the global smartphone market. These are truly impressive numbers when you compare it to Apple’s 48 million units sold during the same period, accounting for 13.6 percent of the global smartphone market.

These smartphone sales for Samsung are the highest they’ve ever been since Q1 2014, and it seems that a lot of sales come from mid-tier models like the Galaxy A8 and the Galaxy J5. It’s important to mention that the global smartphone market is also bigger than last year, having expanded 9.5 percent with 354.2 million units as of late-September.

While Samsung is dominating the smartphone market, they are slacking behind Apple in terms of smartwatch sales. The South Korean-based company has recently announced the first profit growth in two years time, so the future is rather bright for them. Samsung is going to begin the next year in full force with a possible flagship release in January.

Samsung to launch an exclusive BALR edition of the Gear S2 in The Netherlands

Just one day before the Gear S2 smartwatch lands on shelves in The Netherlands, Samsung has announced a collaboration with fashion brand BALR, they’ve joined forces to create an exclusive BALR edition of the Gear S2 which will only be sold in The Netherlands. This special edition of the Gear S2 comes with a specifically designed watch strap and watch face.

BALR’s fashion collections are inspired by the determination for perfection and the taxing demands of football on the human body, it aims to best combine football culture with contemporary fashion. Samsung teams up with designers and brands from time to time to give its products a unique appearance so this is certainly not a new exercise for the company.

Themes Thursday: 52 themes released this week with a bunch focused on Halloween

We showcase some of the best themes released every week as a part of Themes Thursday, and Samsung has released 52 themes in its Theme Store in the past seven days. A bunch of those themes are feature spooky or scary wallpapers as well as icons to help you prepare your compatible Samsung smartphone for the upcoming Halloween celebration.

The Skeleton theme that is showcased below event wishes you “Happy Halloween”. I quite liked the GRAY theme as it has very minimalistic icons. The Darker theme would be appreciated by people who like translucent wallpapers. A theme developer has released twelve themes this week that portray zodiac signs. The KitKat Edge Purple and the KitKat Edge Pink themes are good-looking as well.

It was reported yesterday that Samsung will release paid themes to nine additional countries – the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Switzerland, Australia, Thailand, and Hong Kong – starting today. If you are someone from one of those countries, did see an option to purchase paid themes in the Theme Store?

Samsung trails Apple in global smartwatch sales

This week both Apple and Samsung announced their earnings for the third quarter, they broke down the numbers and highlighted spectacular performance of their smartphones, but we didn’t hear too much about smartwatches. Apple didn’t reveal how many Apple Watch units it sold in the previous quarter and Samsung didn’t expand on the performance of its wearable devices as well, but data from research firm Strategy Analytics shows that Apple currently leads smartwatch sales with Samsung trailing behind in second place.

Strategy Analytics estimates that 4.5 million Apple Watch units were sold between July-September 2015, Samsung comes in second place with 600,000 sales of its wearable device. The report only mentions “wearable device” so it’s a bit unclear whether only the sales of the first-generation Gear were being tracked or if this figure includes sales of the Gear 2 and the Gear Fit as well.  Keep in mind that the figures don’t reflect sales of the Gear S2, which only became available earlier this month, the new smartwatch has already proven to be a hit in South Korea and Strategy Analytics itself is of the view that the Gear S2 could very well challenge Apple’s lead in the wearable device market. Total smartwatch sales in Q3 2015 were tracked at 6.1 million units, a 6x improvement year-over-year, with Apple accounting for 73% and Samsung for 10% of all sales. Other manufacturers like Asus, Sony, LG and Huawei sold close to one million units combined to split 16% of the market share between themselves.

$9.9 billion share buyback announced as Samsung reports first profit growth in two years

Samsung today announced its third quarter results, the company is back to operating profit growth after seven straight quarters of decline, it also announced a share buyback program today worth $9.9 billion or 11.3 trillion Korean won. This announcement, coupled with Samsung’s first operating profit growth in two years, has had an immediate effect with shares of the company rising sharply. This buyback will be implemented in 3 to 4 stages and will be completed in one year, the company’s board has already approved 4.2 trillion won for the first phase which begins October 30 and lasts for about three months. Samsung will be cancelling all shares purchased in the buyback which is its biggest to date and plans to dole out 30% to 50% of its free cash flow to over the next three years primarily by issuing dividends.

Many Samsung shareholders have been calling on the company to increase its payouts, the share buyback will certainly be welcome news for them coupled with the promise of increased dividends down the line. Over the next three years the annual shareholder return will mainly focus on dividends with the remaining allocated capital being used for further buybacks with any and all repurchased shares being cancelled. Samsung is going to announce 2015 year-end dividend in January 2016 when the board will sit to make a decision.

Samsung confirms first operating profit growth after seven straight quarters of decline

Samsung’s operating profit has declined for seven straight quarters but that changes with Samsung announcing its earnings for the third quarter today, as expected the company has achieved operating profit growth, its first since the Galaxy S4. Samsung’s consolidated revenue for the third quarter came in at 51.68 trillion won ($45.6 billion), that’s net profit and sales combined, posting 7.49 trillion won ($6.42 billion) in operating profit. These figures show a significant improvement over Q3 2014 when Samsung posted a disappointing operating profit of 4.22 trillion won ($3.7 billion) on consolidated revenue of 47.45 trillion won ($41.7 billion).

Overall the company’s revenue has increased by approximately 6% on a quarter-on-quarter basis with much of the improvement being driven by its semiconductor and display panel business. A 500 billion won ($440 million) improvement in operating profits has also been accounted to a favorable exchange rate brought on by a weaker Korean Won against major currencies. Samsung’s mobile business hasn’t significantly contributed to this improvement as it only posted 2.4 trillion won ($2.1 billion) in operating profit for the quarter. That’s a robust growth over Q3 2014′s profit of 1.75 trillion won ($1.54 billion) but a decline from Q2 2015′s 2.76 trillion won ($2.4 billion). The company does say that it saw a “significant increase” in sales of smartphones in this quarter as opposed to the second quarter with increased shipments of premium handsets like the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+ as well as the Galaxy A and the Galaxy J series. It does point out that price adjustment of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge and increased shipments of mid-to-low end smartphones caused revenues to increase slightly while operating profit declined quarter-over-quarter.

Samsung says that the markets are responding positively to the large screen smartphones released this quarter and it expects their shipments to pick up further. The company expects smartphone sales to improve in the fourth quarter due to higher market demand as the year-end holiday season rolls in but acknowledges that the competition is expected to get stronger. Samsung will focus on maintaining a profit level similar to the previous quarter for smartphones and it will expand product sales for each price segment that were introduced in the third quarter. A proper earnings guidance will come later but Samsung cautions investors that it expects earnings to decline in the fourth quarter primarily due to unfavorable foreign exchange rates.

Samsung Electronics to report first profit growth in two years

Samsung Electronics has been reporting low profits for quite a while now but a new report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that Samsung is about to report the first profit growth in two years, which was to be expected. The report forecasts an earning report of $5.3 billion, the equivalent of 6 trillion won which is a 42 percent increase in a single year. It’s all very surprising especially considering that Samsung has been reporting constant losses for multiple quarters but what’s truly surprising is that it wasn’t Samsung’s flagship that brought forth the profit but rather Samsung’s business strategy, like reduced intervals between its high-profile smartphone releases which increased sales.

The outlook seems positive if we take a look at the facts. First of all the tech company could announce its next flagship, the Galaxy S7, in January and the Tizen ecosystem is also growing at a very fast pace, with Samsung attracting developers to this platform by offering them 100% of the app revenue. Samsung Pay is growing faster than any of its competitors, having surpassed 1 million users in South Korea and bringing in $30 million in accumulated transaction volume in the first month alone.

Samsung’s chip manufacturing business is also growing at a very fast pace, raking in billions of dollars and bringing forth interesting partnerships, like the one between Apple and Samsung. From an investor’s perspective, Samsung’s stocks have also recovered from the big August dip where one share was 1,067,000 won ($940) to 1,308,000.00 won (~$1,157) which basically means investors are once again willing to put their money into one of the biggest companies on the planet.

Samsung finally unveils the Galaxy View

We exclusively reported earlier this year that Samsung is working on an 18.4-inch Android-powered tablet, a few months back the company teased this tablet that it has named the Galaxy View, and over the past couple of weeks there has been a steady stream of information about this new tablet. Today Samsung has finally unveiled the Galaxy View, the biggest selling point is its huge display and Samsung promises a video-optimized user interface as well a “long-lasting” battery life. There’s no mistaking the fact that this device has been created with content consumption in media and the display size is just perfect for that.

The Galaxy View has an 18.4-inch full HD display, Samsung says that it has been designed with a video-centric interface in mind, there’s a dedicated home screen for videos which showcases all of the different content sources in one place making it much easier for users to discover content they’d want to watch. Weighing in at a chunky 2.65kg the Galaxy View measures 275.8mm x 11.9mm x 451.8 mm, it even has an integrated kickstand which effortlessly props up the device when users want to watch content from a distance. It’s powered by a 1.6Ghz octa-core processor with 2GB RAM and 32/64GB internal storage, runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, has a 2.1-megapixel front camera and supports LTE. There’s support for microSD cards and the 5,700mAh battery promises eight hours of video playback.

Tizen gets native Facebook app, available on the Samsung Z3

Samsung’s Tizen phones come with a Facebook app out of the box, but this app simply loads the web version of the social network. The web version of Facebook is rather limited, so it hasn’t been a good experience for Tizen smartphone users. Well, until now that is, as an update to the Facebook app for Tizen turns it into a proper native app designed for the operating system.

The native app looks and feels similar to the Android version of Facebook, but it seems there is still some work to do as not everything seems to have been implemented. For example, things like our SamMobile page (and pages in general) and the settings menu still open in a browser, though future updates should bring in the necessary changes to make this a truly native app.

Still, a native version of one of the most important smartphone apps is a good step forward for Samsung’s young mobile operating system. Download the update from the Tizen store; the app is available only on the Samsung Z3 for now, but we’re sure the update will also make it to the Z1 in the next few days.

What’s on my Samsung smartphone: October, 2015

The sort of questions I continually get asked are: “What’s your favourite application at the moment? What launcher are you currently using? What wallpaper has caught your attention this week?” I’d be lying if I said that it hasn’t got a little laborious answering the same questions over and over again, so I’ve put together this roundup of the current configuration of my smartphone.

For the past few months, my go-to handset of choice has been the International variant of the Galaxy S6 Edge, which launched back in April. I love its premium build quality, its incredibly gorgeous 5.1-inch curved QHD display, its 16-megapixel rear-facing camera which works a treat in low-light conditions and its 2,600mAh non-removable battery.

Here’s what I have installed on the device and how I have it set up.

Launcher – Google Now

I’m presently using the extremely fluid official Google Now Launcher which is super easy to install. I’m a huge fan of the Nexus lineup and have owned a Nexus 4, 5 and 6 – so having the same overlay on my S6 Edge makes me feel right at home. It also gives me one-swipe access to Google Now from the home screen, which is great as I am a frequent user of the service.

Wallpaper – Ocean Delight by Sheno C

Truth be told, I’m not a huge fan of stock Android wallpapers. For this reason, my background is a minimalistic ocean-centric Material Design render that was created and uploaded to Google+ by Sheno C. The image itself is a very simple abstract sketch that looks stunning on my S6 Edge. The gradient from the sky to the ocean is clear and smooth, and the blue hue is really crisp.

Third-Party Applications – Daily Mail Online, Fenix for Twitter, Relay for Reddit, Spotify Music and WhatsApp Messenger.

  • Daily Mail Online / Free – The Daily Mail Newspaper has been my primary source of world news for as long as I can remember, so it makes perfect sense that I should have its mobile client installed on my smartphone. The application automatically downloads the top stories for offline reading, which is great for when I’m on the Underground or anywhere with no signal.
  • Fenix for Twitter / $5.49 – Fenix is by far my favourite third-party Twitter client. It’s jam-packed with all the latest and greatest functionality, including the ability to: view conversations in an easy to read layout, preview images on your timeline and open links using an internal browser. Not a day goes by when I don’t use this app. It really is awesome.
  • Relay for Reddit / Free Relay has been my preferred Reddit client for over a year now. It’s cleaner and smoother than most of the competition out there. Whatsmore, its baked-in animations, quick image previews and themes present an exceptionally fluid and personal browsing experience. It even has a comprehensive set of Moderator features, which are ideal for keeping spam out of the subreddits you manage.
  • Spotify Music / Free – Music consumes a large part of my day and Spotify enables me to access albums from my favourite artists for a fixed monthly fee. There’s even offline playback, which is splendid for my daily commute to work, and the recently-implemented Chromecast compatibility makes it the ultimate party companion.
  • WhatsApp Messenger / Free – This is the very first application  I install on all of my smartphones. I can’t stress how amazing WhatsApp is. I use it on a daily basis to stay in contact with family, friends and colleagues. Furthermore, WhatsApp Web enables me to respond to messages from my laptop without having to take my handset out of my pocket.

Accessories – dBrand Skin

As with any smartphone, protection is key. No matter how rugged and durable the manufacturer claims the unit is, it’s always better to have an extra layer of protection. Sometimes they can even improve the appearance of the device. Since I got my hands on the Galaxy S6 Edge, I have had the Matte Black dBrand skin applied, and it has done a great job of keeping the handset clean.

So there you have it, folks. That’s how I’ve had my smartphone setup for a while now. What launcher and wallpaper are you using on your phone? What are some of your must-have applications and accessories? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below.

Samsung to mass produce Exynos 8890 for Galaxy S7 from December

There has been a lot of buzz around Samsung’s upcoming mobile processor, the Exynos 8890. Starting Q1 2016, it will go head-to-head with the best SoCs in the industry including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 and Apple’s A9X. In the previous weeks, we reported that Samsung is in the process of optimising its chipset for better performance as well as efficiency.

Now, it is being reported by Business Korea that the South Korean electronics chip giant will start mass producing the Exynos 8890 for the Galaxy S7 starting from December 2015 in its Giheung plant. The Exynos 8890 is an important milestone for the company as it will feature a custom CPU core for the first time in its processor lineup. Samsung will launch multiple variants of the Galaxy S7 with some of them featuring Exynos 8890, while others using the Snapdragon 820 chipsets.

With this introduction, Samsung will become the third brand after Qualcomm and Apple to introduce its own custom CPU cores, and that will improve the company’s position in the SoC segment. This is because it takes a lot of effort and experience in all forms of chip design including the manufacturing process. Till now, Samsung used generic ARM CPU cores in the Exynos chipsets, but starting with Exynos 8890, it will use homegrown M1 (a.k.a Mongoose) cores.

Samsung also has plans to introduce its own GPU in Exynos chipsets, but that will come at a later stage. The company is reportedly optimising Snapdragon 820 to fix its heating issues as the chipset will be manufactured by Samsung using its 14nm FinFET process. This is help the company in rising above other SoC players like MediaTek, Spreadtrum, and Huawei. Moreover, the company has reportedly hired AMD’s legendary CPU architect Jim Keller to design its next-generation Exynos chipsets.

Samsung will bring paid themes to nine countries tomorrow

Samsung released support for third-party themes on some of its new smartphones that were launched this year, but the availability of paid themes was limited to only a few markets around the world. Paid themes were available in the Theme Store in markets like India and South Korea, but were not available to users in the European countries.

Now, a well-known theme developer Samer Zayer has announced through a post on his Google+ account that paid themes are coming to nine countries around the world starting tomorrow. If this information is to be believed, Samsung will release paid themes to users in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Switzerland, Australia, Thailand, and Hong Kong.

Moreover, an update to the Theme Store has been released today. The new version of the Theme Store (v 1.01.38) has brought a new ‘My Themes’ tab on the top bar as well as a lot of categories for themes, which you can see when you scroll down to the bottom of the app.

Galaxy View user manual appears on Samsung’s website

The Galaxy View has been fully detailed ahead of its launch thanks to a plethora of leaks, and the 18.4-inch tablet’s user manual has now popped up online on Samsung’s website, suggesting an official announcement could take place soon. The user manual details various features of the Galaxy View, including the detachable arching handle at its back that acts as a dock and also doubles up as a way of carrying the tablet.

The Galaxy View comes with stereo loudspeakers at the back, and it also sports a DC jack. The tablet does have a battery inside but it’s said to be only a 6,700 mAh unit, so Samsung has likely put in a DC jack to enable constant usage when users are at home and can connect the tablet to a power outlet instead of using the inbuilt battery. The manual also confirms a cellular variant, with the tablet to support LTE connectivity as we had exclusively revealed.

galaxy-view-manual-1

On the software front, the manual mentions a dedicated TV page and also reveals that the tablet will connect to Samsung Smart TVs from 2015 and beyond via Bluetooth. The manual also talks of a feature called Family Square. This is a way to share content with family members, and while Samsung doesn’t detail how the content will be shared, it’s likely a Bluetooth or a Wi-Fi connection will be used to connect to other Samsung devices.

The Galaxy View seems like an interesting device, and it’s clear that Samsung will be pitching it as something that can slot right in between a tablet and a full-fledged television. Samsung Pay will support more banks and work with gift cards in the United States

Samsung today confirmed that its payment service will soon work with even more banks in the United States, and that by the end of this year users will be able to pay at participating merchants using gift cards stored within the Samsung Pay app. The mobile payment service was launched in the country last month, US is one of the two launch markets for Samsung Pay and now work is underway to bring the payment service to more markets across the globe.

The company says that it’s seeing repeat usage with an average of eight transactions per user in the United States, adding that three out of the four transactions were made possible by MST. Magnetic Secure Transmission is crucial to the success of Samsung Pay, it enables merchants to accept Samsung Pay using existing card terminals, thus Samsung Pay can essentially be used anywhere a customer can pay by card. That’s something that rival services like Apple Pay don’t have.

In the coming months cards issued by Chase, PNC Bank, TD Bank, SunTrust, Fifth Third Bank, First Hawaiian, Key Bank, Silicon Valley Bank, Security Service Federal Credit Union, Navy Federal Credit Union, Virginia Credit Union, Associated Bank, Randolph Brooks Federal Credit Union and People’s United Bank will work on Samsung Pay. The company has also confirmed today that its mobile payment service will work with Discover starting next year. Support for gift cards arrives before the end of this year, enabling users to pay at retailers across grocery, dining, fashion and entertainment industries using gift cards stored in the Samsung Pay app.

“Restless Innovation”: Why Samsung experiments on its high-end “Galaxies”

Samsung is the top Android OEM worldwide, and, like all important companies, receives its share of ridicule from critics. In years past, critics have labeled the Korean manufacturer one who “throws something against the wall to see what sticks,” referring to Samsung’s constant experimentation with its products.

Take the Note Edge, for example: some critics chide Samsung because the company emerged with a Note Edge last year, only to forgo a Note Edge 2 this year. “Why does Samsung do one thing this year and do something new the following year?” some say. To some consumers, the only way to behave as a tech company is to make a product, tweak it here and there (but not too much), and release a new one each year. Some in the tech field chided Samsung for its Galaxy S5; then, Samsung turns around and releases a Galaxy S6 edge – only to receive more criticism: “What’s the purpose of an edge on a smartphone?”

So, let’s put the question out there: “Why does Samsung experiment on its high-end ‘Galaxies’?” Why does Samsung experiment at all, when all consumers want is a great device, slightly tweaked, that looks good and runs good, has vanilla Android, and gives fast updates? Why even experiment with TouchWiz when Samsung should just “take cues from Motorola and leave the software experience to Google”?

The answer is simple: because, should Samsung fail to experiment, the Korean manufacturer would abrogate its role as a tech company. Tech is ever changing, and innovation only comes through change. Tech companies embrace the change and create breakthroughs in innovation with experimentation.

Think of the scientist: what does the scientist do? He experiments. Scientists adhere to what is known as the scientific method, by which they 1) make a hypothesis or assume a theory, and then 2) experiment and test out their working theory. No scientist finds himself or herself with a working theory in the first experiment.

What do chefs do? They cook. They are often known for their famous recipes, but those recipes don’t arrive without experimentation. Chefs often stumble onto an award-winning recipe through trial and error. The famous statement “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again” assumes that making mistakes and continuing forward in the face of them is the key to success.

Cooking is a science of its own, as are art, music, and sports. Artists don’t learn how to draw or paint without making mistakes. Great musicians don’t rise to prominence without having missed a piano note in a recital once or twice in their careers. Sports athletes often endure a missed free throw in a college basketball game or the NBA before winning a championship ring three years down the line. Mistakes are the stepping stones by which we learn how to proceed in the things we do. Mistakes are how we grow as human beings. Those who never make mistakes never grow.

And the same can be said for tech companies. Those that focus on “getting it right” the first time never grow. Sure, they may make great smartphones and wearable tech. Sure, their tech may be well-designed, and may even net them billions of dollars. Sure, lots of consumers may even prefer the products of such a company over its competitors – but the company will never live up to its responsibility as a tech company. And any company that loses its reputation in innovation forfeits its respect as a tech company. If experimentation is key to innovation, and a company never experiments, it will never innovate.

So, when critics attack Samsung’s experimentation with its smartwatches, for example, they forget the circular Gear S2 exists because of Samsung’s other smartwatches (Galaxy Gear, Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear S) and the lessons learned from those former ones. When they attack Samsung’s Note Edge, they do so, forgetting that it took the Note Edge to produce the stunning Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge+ with Samsung’s Apps Edge (and the Galaxy Note 5 with its borrowed “edge” design on the device’s backside) that will provide additional functionality down the line.

When critics knock Samsung’s experimentation, they knock Samsung’s innovation. And to knock Samsung’s innovation is to take away the best products on the market – those we would never have experienced if Samsung wasn’t the “quirky” tech company we all know and love. Additionally, to knock Samsung’s innovation is to take away the progress of the market, since Samsung’s achievements have, in many ways, lifted the smartphone industry as we know it.

Don’t take my word for it, listen to Samsung:

Back in 2011, Samsung had found success with the first Galaxy S, so we were excited about the potential of the S2. But, we also felt that there were so many consumers out there that wanted a product that just didn’t exist. We were missing something big. And that’s what led to the first Galaxy Note. It was a breakthrough, not just for us, but for the entire industry. We faced some doubt and market skepticism (and that’s kind of an understatement); at the time, 3.5 and 4-inch phones dominated the market, but we summoned the courage. We believed in the Note. We knew there was demand for a bigger display, a larger canvas that made more possible. It turns out we were right. – Justin Dennison, Galaxy Unpacked 2015, 43:08-44:03

Just two years ago, at CES, we revealed a new concept: flexible display technology. We believed in that concept, so we bet big on an immersive screen that was beautiful and useful. And we have been so happy with the response from customers; they love the dual-edge experience. That’s how we stay ahead of the curve: we listen, we learn, and we take a risk. We push ourselves to be first and others join us. The technologies make life better; that’s true with the big breakthroughs, but it’s also true with steady worker progress. When we develop better cameras, higher-resolution screens, batteries that charge faster and last longer, that not only lifts Samsung; it propels the industry. –J.K. Shin, Galaxy Unpacked 2015, 37:11-38:22

I believe that Samsung has an important role to play in advancing technology in our daily lives. We push ourselves hard; we take a step forward and then another. And if we get there first, others will follow. That’s how we transform society for the better. That’s how we make life easier, simpler, and more productive. That’s what relentless innovation means: offering what’s next now. –J.K. Shin, 10:42-11:22, Mobile World Congress 2015

Samsung reportedly supplying OLED displays for Apple Watch, paving the way for AMOLED on future iPhones

A report out of Korea today claims that Apple is diversifying the supply chain for its first smartwatch by sourcing OLED displays for the Apple Watch from Samsung. LG Display was previously said to be the only supplier for the Apple Watch’s display and it was said that Apple would stick with the company till the second-generation Apple Watch but if today’s report is to be believed Samsung is now in the mix as well.

Ever since the first iPhone was released in 2007 the smartphone has made use of LCD technology in all models but today’s report also claims that Samsung is providing OLED panel samples to Apple which might pave the way for AMOLED displays to arrive on future iPhones. Apple is said to be testing these OLED panels from Samsung and is expected to make a decision next month about whether or not it wants to stick with LCD for the next generation smartphone or move to OLED. Apple rarely comments on supply chain related matters so it’s unlikely that we’ll ever get a confirmation from the fruit company on this, Samsung has not yet commented on the matter as well.

Exclusive: Samsung’s Project Valley ‘foldable device’ (SM-G929F) will launch in these countries

Samsung’s first phone with a foldable display, dubbed Project Valley at the moment, is rumored to be launching in January next year, and we were the first to exclusively reveal the device’s existence. We have now been able to get more information on the device from our insiders, including its model number and a list of the countries where it might be released.

The Project Valley phone will carry model number SM-G929F. The Galaxy S6 edge+ has model number SM-G928, and the very small change in the foldable device’s model number suggests it could have specifications similar to the S6 edge+, with the foldable display being the highlight. As we noted in our initial report, the display will possibly form a V-like shape when it is closed, which is what gives it its codename and is a possibility that was backed by a Samsung patent we came across last month.

As for the device’s launch, our sources say it will be available in the following markets:

  • BTU – United Kingdom
  • CPW – United Kingdom (Carphone Warehouse)
  • DBT – Germany
  • ITV – Italy
  • KOR - South Korea
  • NEE – Nordic countries
  • XEF – France
  • XEO – Poland
  • XEU – United Kingdom / Ireland

For a device that will be considered quite experimental, that’s a pretty long list of countries. The US is notably absent from the list, but it’s possible Samsung will bring Project Valley to more regions later on. We will continue to hunt for all the details we can get on Project Valley, and share what we can with you guys as soon as possible.

Samsung is trying to fix Snapdragon 820 chipset

As we reported earlier, Samsung might release three processor variants of the Galaxy S7. After exclusively using the homegrown Exynos 7420 chipset in its high-end smartphones that were released in 2015, the South Korean smartphone giant might have made up its mind to bring back Snapdragon chipsets in its upcoming flagship smartphone for 2016.

According to a new report from Business Korea, Samsung is making every effort to fix heating issues in the Snapdragon 820 chipset and trying to optimize it. The company is trying to release a patch before the end of this month by modifying the microprocessor control program. If this step doesn’t solve the issue, the company is planning to use heat radiating pipes to improve heat dissipation, which means that Samsung is hell bent on using the Snapdragon 820 in the Galaxy S7 at all costs.

The company is trying to stabilize the chipset because the Snapdragon 820 is being manufactured using Samsung’s 14nm FinFET process. The better the performance of the Snapdragon 820, the higher the sales of the Galaxy S7 as well as Snapdragon 820 chips. This will in turn be advantageous to Samsung. The South Korean electronics giant is also working on its next-generation chipset, the Exynos 8890, which has custom 64-bit CPU cores.

After the poor performance of Qualcomm’s first high-end 64-bit mobile processor, the Snapdragon 810, the company has been under a lot of pressure from its investors. The mobile processor giant has decided to lay off 15 percent of its workforce in July. The company claims that the Snapdragon 820 offers upto 40 percent faster graphic performance while being 40 percent power efficient than the Snapdragon 810.

Specifications of Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A7 successors leak

We broke the exclusive news about Samsung working on successors to the Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 a month ago, and also revealed a list of accessories that will be launched alongside the devices. Our insiders weren’t able to give us any information on the hardware of these upcoming devices, but the GFXBench benchmark database has now revealed the specifications of the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A7.

The two phones have shown up with model numbers SM-A310 and SM-A710X and are listed as the Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A7, though these are unlikely to be the final names. The SM-A310 has a 4.7-inch HD display, a quad-core Exynos 7580 chipset clocked at 1.5GHz (the Exynos 7580 is actually an octa-core chip, so this might be an error or a quad-core variant of the SoC), 1.5GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera.

The SM-A710X has a 5.5-inch Full HD display, an octa-core Snapdragon 615 chipset and 3GB of RAM, with the rest of the specs the same as the SM-A310′s. Both devices run Android 5.1.1, and they feature a few upgrades over the original Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A7, like the primary camera on the A3 and the increased RAM on the A7. Of course, GFXBench doesn’t give us any idea of when these new Galaxy A phones will be launched, but we should see more details leak as we inch closer to the official unveil.

Galaxy S6 edge+ gets first software update, battery improvements in tow

The unlocked Galaxy Note 5 got its first software update last week, and Samsung is now rolling out the exact same update to the Galaxy S6 edge+. The Galaxy S6 edge+ shares all of its hardware with the Galaxy Note 5; it’s interesting to see Samsung finally maintaining consistency in software updates despite the two devices being from a different lineup, and despite the Note 5′s software not exactly being 100 percent similar to the S6 edge+ thanks to its stylus-related features.

The update brings improvements to battery usage and call stability, in addition to enhanced security. It’s a 138.14 MB update (with build number G928GDDU2AOJ5) that is available on our S6 edge+ in India, and it seems the same update has already rolled out for the European variant of the device in recent days, something that went under our radar. We will be keeping an eye on the battery life of the phone over the next few days to see if it actually improves; the S6 edge+ can last considerably long out of the box, and increased endurance would certainly be very welcome.

Have you received this update on your Galaxy S6 edge+? Let us know in the comments, and if you’ve been on the latest version of the OS for a few days, do tell us if you have noticed any changes in battery life.
