J.K. Shin takes a step back from running Samsung’s mobile business

The performance of Samsung’s mobile business over the past few quarters has not been stellar and it’s evident that Samsung needs to do more to preserve its dominant position in the market. J.K. Shin, who has long served as the chief of Samsung’s mobile division, is now handing over the day-to-day running to Dongjin Koh. This was confirmed today during Samsung Group’s annual personnel appointments, Shin will continue to head the overall mobile division and will now be focusing on the long-term strategy as well as on the development of new growth businesses.

Koh was previously the head of mobile research and development at Samsung and has played an important role in the development and launch of the company’s recent high-end devices like the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6. In a release Samsung Group said: “As Koh has a vision and knowledge on the development of solutions and services, such as KNOX and Samsung Pay, he is expected to lead the second leap of the mobile business.”

This change comes at a time when Samsung is working very hard to reverse its fortunes in the global smartphone market amid declining operating profit and market share. It continues to face tough competition from Apple in the high-end segment whereas Chinese and local OEMs are making things hard in emerging markets. It will certainly be interesting to see what changes Koh makes to the strategy of Samsung’s mobile business in a bid to bring up profits once again and increase market share, industry watchers, shareholders and fans of the company alike will be watching what he does very closely.

Samsung rumored to make major camera announcement at CES 2016

We have heard many rumors about the future of Samsung’s camera division, exacerbated by the company’s exit from one European market with the possibility of a similar move in other markets, some even believe that Samsung is going to shut down this entire division and transfer employees to other departments that work on camera technology for devices like smartphones and tablets.

However there a rumor now from “long time Samsung sources” claiming that the company is going to make a major camera related announcement at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2016 in Las Vegas. The convention takes place next month but it’s quite likely that we might get to hear what the company has in store for us, if anything, before Samsung’s press event.

Cheaper AMOLED panels from Samsung expected to deal major blow to LCD in 2016

Samsung already accounts for a significant chunk of AMOLED panel production for small and medium sized devices, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that Samsung has played a major part in making AMOLED more popular, and the step it’s rumored to take next year might deal a major blow to LCD. According to a report out of China Samsung is going to bring down the cost of AMOLED panels by as much as 20% to bring them more in line with the cost of LCD panels.

Cost has remained in issue for OEMs looking to adopt AMOLED panels instead of LCD, Samsung is rumored to be in discussions with several Chinese OEMs that primarily make low-to-mid-range handsets and it appears that to bring those manufacturers on board Samsung will bring down the prices of its AMOLED panels by around 20%. The panels are believed to cost about 30% more than LCD and if Samsung follows through with this in 2016 only a 10% difference will remain thus enabling many OEMs to consider making the jump to AMOLED. Lowering the costs may also prove to very beneficial for Samsung in the long run as Apple is rumored to be considering AMOLED panels for 2018 iPhone, reduced cost may encourage Apple to make the switch from LCD to AMOLED.

Amazon offering the Galaxy S6 for only $399.99

Undependable battery life and multitasking limitations aside, the Galaxy S6 is one of the best flagship Android phones to have come out this year. It doesn’t have the glamour of the curved edges seen on the Galaxy S6 edge, but even after all these months it is still an excellent device that can go head to head with newer phones. Today, Amazon has made the Galaxy S6 even more attractive for US consumers, by cutting its price down to $399.99 for the unlocked variant.

The Galaxy S6 is Amazon’s Deal of the Day today, and the discount is a huge one at $200 less than the regular price. It’s the 32GB variant so media hoarders might not find the deal too attractive; also, only the black version of the device is part of the offer, but then again you shouldn’t really be making too many demands for a deal that may or may not come along any time soon.

Head to the source link to buy the Galaxy S6.

Samsung’s latest patents show scrollable devices, tab style smartphones and more

Samsung has been rumored to be working on a foldable display and a recent patent gives us a whole new concept which is the idea of a scrollable device. Such a device would have two states: a rolled state and an unrolled state. In the first state you would basically have a tube-like device which would give you the ability to pull using a small handle, thus revealing a large display. This would definitely prove pretty useful because you could easily carry the scroll around in your pocket and only pull the screen out when you need it.

An interesting feature of this design is the handle that you use to pull the screen out, which is called a tab. The tab is a mobile part of the scroll and it can either be put up or down on the tube, the latter unveiling your notifications in an elegant manner.

Another way of opening this gadget would be to press a certain icon on the side then when you pull the display out, it would open that exact app.

Another notable patent that Samsung submitted recently is the tab style smartphone which is a device resembling a book. This gadget would basically fold in half with a tab attached on the side with various apps so you would quickly open apps similar to what the previous scroll concept used.

Second-gen Samsung Galaxy A7 to have a 3,300 mAh battery

Until the Galaxy A8 came along, great battery life wasn’t one of the strong suits of Samsung’s Galaxy A lineup. The Galaxy A7, which had a large Full HD display, had to make do with a 2,600 mAh battery that did the job well enough but wasn’t able to offer impressive endurance, but it seems Samsung is looking to rectify that with the sequel to the A7.

We already know most of the specs of the Galaxy A7 2016, and the FCC has now revealed that the handset will feature a 3,300 mAh battery. That’s a giant leap in battery capacity; given how good the 3,000 mAh unit on the Galaxy A8 can be, one can only wonder how long the A7 2016 will be able to last on a single charge. What makes the large battery more impressive is the fact that the second-generation A7 is expected to be only 6.9 mm thick; that’s not as low as the 6.3 mm profile of the original Galaxy A7, but there’s little chance of anyone complaining about the added heft.

The Galaxy A7 2016 will come with a Galaxy S6-like metal and glass design, a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 615 processor, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD slot, 3GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera, and a 5-megapixel front camera. It will run Android 5.1.1 out of the box.

Themes Thursday: 48 themes released in the Theme Store this week

We are back again this week with Themes Thursday! Samsung has released 48 themes this week for its recently released smartphones in the Theme Store. We’ve liked only seven of those themes, and most of these themes are paid.

The Aire series of themes are pretty good, thanks to its neatly designed modern icons and good fonts. A couple of themes from the MINU collection are quite decent as well. There are a bunch of Christmas related themes, and two of them are really good. Which themes did you like?

Attention: The Gear VR could burn a hole into your smartphone display

The consumer-ready version of the Gear VR went on sale recently in some important markets around the world, and the device was sold out online and in Korea. If you have purchased the virtual reality headset from Samsung, here are a few safety related warnings  that you should take into account.

The folks over at RoadToVR have noticed that you should never leave the Gear VR out in the sun with the smartphone inside it. You should know that the lenses can focus sun rays (working similar to a magnifying glass) onto the smartphone’s display, damaging it permanently.

Moreover, you should not use the Gear VR without the phone docked inside it. If you use it that way, you could lose your vision when you watch a powerful light source (like the Sun). Moreover, you should not let kids below the age of 13 use the Gear VR for an extended period of time, because the user manual states that it can limit the visual development of the children.

The Gear VR is one of the best virtual reality headsets out there, and consuming content through it is quite immersive, but you should never use it under direct sunlight as it can damage your eyes or your smartphone’s display. So, you should be very careful about how you use the it and where you use it.

ZeroLemon releases 3500mAh battery case for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+

Samsung has taken a lot of flak for not including a removable battery in its 2015 flagship handsets and users do find themselves struggling to get more than a full day’s usage out of devices like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. The company did try to make amends with support for Fast Charging and built-in wireless charging but that’s not enough, which is why many users are investing in battery cases like the ones from Mophie. ZeroLemon is another company which makes such cases and it has now released 3500mAh battery cases for both the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+.

The ZeroLemon case features a 3500mAh battery built-in which means that it’s capable of fully charging the Galaxy Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 edge+ from 0% to full and then some. It’s housed in a black TPU case that also protects against drops and heavy shocks, but adds a bit of bulk and weight to the device, that’s a compromise that you have to make just to get more juice for your handset. The ZeroLemon battery case for the Galaxy Note 5 and for the Galaxy S6 edge+ are both available for purchase right now via Amazon, they’re priced at $39.99.

Verizon and AT&T also start selling the Galaxy Note 5 in Gold Platinum

Carriers in the United States didn’t offer the Galaxy Note 5 in Gold Platinum when the handset first came out a couple of months ago so customers who wanted one either had to purchase an unlocked version from independent retailers or wait on their carrier to bring this color option. T-Mobile started selling the Galaxy Note 5 in Gold Platinum a fortnight back and now both Verizon and AT&T are selling the handset is this color as well.

It’s only the color that’s different otherwise it’s the exact same handset that Verizon and AT&T have been selling for months now. Pricing is the same as well, AT&T will sell you the 64GB Galaxy Note 5 in Gold Platinum for $839.99 upfront or with $0 down and $28 per month for 30 months. It’s also selling the device with a conventional two year service contract for $349.99. Verizon has the 32GB Galaxy Note 5 in Gold Platinum for $696 upfront or $0 down and equal monthly installments of $29 for 24 months.

Gear VR sells out in Korea on day one

The Gear VR headset is off to a great start, Samsung released the consumer version of its virtual reality headset over a week ago and already you might find it hard to get your hands on one. A report out of Korea says that a similar response from customers was seen on Samsung’s home turf, the Gear VR sold out in South Korea on day one.

Samsung released the Gear VR in South Korea earlier this week and it sold out on day one, though it merits mentioning here that only 2,000 units were made available for purchase initially. Nevertheless it goes to show that consumers are taking an interest in this product and the trend is likely to continue, in South Korea the Gear VR is being sold for 129,800 won which is equal to about $110. The Gear VR is compatible with the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S6 edge, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5, with a significant amount of VR content already available for the headset.

Samsung starts mass production of first 128GB DDR4 modules for enterprise servers

Samsung today announced that it has started mass production of the industry’s first “through silicon via” (TSV) 128GB DDR4 memory modules for data centers and enterprise servers, it follows the introduction of the world’s-first 64GB 3D TSV DDR4 DRAM last year. The company’s latest TSV DRAM module brings the largest capacity and highest efficiency of any DRAM modules available today, claims Samsung, while promising superior performance and excellent reliability.

128GB TSV DDR4 memory module is made up of a total of 144 DDR chips that are arranged in 36 4GB DRAM packages, each package contains four 20nm 8GB chips that are assembled with TSV packaging technology. Instead of using wire bonding TSV packages have chip dies that are ground down to a few dozen micrometers and then pierced with fine holes to be vertically connected by electrodes passing through the holes as this allows for a major increase in signal transmission. This is what enables the new memory module to provide a low-power solution for next-generation servers and data centers reaching peak speeds of up to 2,400Mbps, that’s nearly twice the performance with power usage being cut down by about 50%. Samsung will also introduce TSV DRAM modules that bring data transfer speeds of up to 2,667Mbps and 3,200Mbps to meet enterprise server needs.

Samsung Knox adopted by four million users

Samsung has announced that just two years after its launch its Knox security solution has been adopted by four million users across the globe, this according to Samsung’s vice president of B2B development IT and mobile communications Young-Jip Kim, who wrote in a blog post that Knox adoption is gradually increasing in the enterprise market.

The last update on Knox usage numbers came back in May 2014 when Samsung said that the security solution had more than 1.8 million active users, it has taken Samsung over a year and a half to effectively double the number of active users. Since then Knox has been updated to Knox 2.0 and a separate Knox store for enterprise apps was also introduced. Samsung and BlackBerry also announced earlier this year that they were going to integrate the Knox secure platform with WorkLife by SecuSuite and BlackBerry, further paving the way for Knox to make its mark in the enterprise sector.

Samsung is working on a Bluetooth gamepad for the Gear VR

Samsung is doing everything it can to make the Gear VR a success, knowing fully that virtual reality would become a huge market in the future. The company has already released a few compelling games for its virtual reality headset like the Land’s End, and now the South Korean smartphone giant is working on a wireless gamepad for the Gear VR.

We have stumbled upon a patent application from Samsung Electronics that showcases the design for a Bluetooth gamepad that is designed to be used with a “head mounted apparatus”, which points towards a virtual reality headset. The application for a design patent was filed in February 2015, and it the registration was granted by the authority earlier this month.

As you can see in the images, it closely resembles to the gamepad that Samsung released with the Galaxy S4. It consists of two D-Pads, a thumbstick, four action buttons, two shoulder buttons, a power button, and a microUSB port for charging. This new gamepad from Samsung appears to be slimmer than the earlier version, and will work with smartphones and tablets as well.
