Import listing points towards the Galaxy Note 7 edge

The debate continues over whether the company’s next flagship phablet will be called Galaxy Note 6 as many expect or if Samsung is going to skip a number and call it the Galaxy Note 7 instead. The debate won’t end soon, and so won’t rumors about an “edge” variant of the next Galaxy Note flagship. It’s not surprising for Samsung to release multiple variants of one handset, and it has already released the Galaxy Note Edge before, so this possibility certainly exists.

Import tracker Zauba lists a metal mask for mobile phone production line of the SM-N935G. The model number itself is enough to assume that it points towards the Galaxy Note 7 edge. SM-N930 is the model number for the next Galaxy Note phablet and since edge variants are also differentiated with the digit “5,” it’s easy to see the possibility that this metal mask just might be for the Galaxy Note 7 edge. For example, the Galaxy S7 has model number SM-G930 while the Galaxy S7 edge has model number SM-G935. All of this will remain speculation until Samsung makes an official announcement, we’ll have to wait until August for that.

We should point out here that we find no firmware being developed for a handset bearing model number SM-N935G, so it’s still far from confirmed if Samsung will be launching an edge variant alongside its next Galaxy Note phablet.

Verizon pushing Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to the Galaxy S5

North America’s largest carrier is bringing Marshmallow to Samsung’s 2014 Galaxy S flagship today. Android 6.0.1 is making its way to the Galaxy S5 on Verizon, following the T-Mobile variant which received the major upgrade a week ago. The update carries firmware version G900VVRU2DPD1, with Wi-Fi calling, Ultra High-Quality Audio, new app icons and regular Marshmallow features (Doze, Google Now on Tap, better control over permissions for apps) a part of the package.

You should be seeing the update arrive on your Galaxy S5 sometime over the course of the week. Quite a few lucky folks should be getting Marshmallow today itself; those that can’t wait can try hitting the Check now button in the Settings » About device » Software update menu. Let us know what you think of the latest version of Android once you get it installed on your phone!

Gear VR provides virtual motivation to the worst football team in England

Samsung has ran campaigns in the past that have showcased how the Gear VR can help people get over their fears, but fears are not at the center of its latest campaign, failure is. Samsung conducted an experiment to see if the Galaxy S7 and the Gear VR could provide some virtual motivation to New Mills AFC which is considered as the worst football team in England.

The players walk into their dressing rooms one day and find that there’s a Gear VR for each one of them. Motivation comes in the form of a VR speech by an English football manager called Harry Redknapp. It sounds quite motivating indeed but unfortunately, it didn’t quite do the trick for New Mills AFC. Samsung itself points out that New Mills left the pitch still as the worst team in England, “but thanks to Galaxy S7 and Gear VR they entered it as champions.” New Mills AFC is yet to win their first game of the season.

Exclusive: Gear Fit 2 full specifications confirmed

Samsung launched the Gear Fit wearable fitness tracker in 2014. The product was well received and it’s about time that Samsung came out with an updated model. We first saw leaked images of the Gear Fit 2 about a month ago and renders of the device have leaked multiple times since then. Today, we can exclusively confirm the full specifications of the Gear Fit 2.

The Samsung Gear Fit 2 features a 1.55-inch 216 x 432 Curved Super AMOLED display with a Samsung 1GHz dual-core processor under the hood, it also has 512MB RAM, 2GB internal storage, and IP68 certification. For those who are unaware, IP68 certification guarantees that the device can be submerged in over 1.5-meters of water for half an hour, so the Gear Fit 2 will be a good fit for swimmers as well. The Gear Fit 2 has a 200mAh battery and runs Tizen 2.3. Aside from GPS and GLONASS it also features a heart rate sensor, gyroscope, barometer, and accelerometer.

No word as yet on the pricing or availability but Samsung is expected to launch the Gear Fit 2 in June.

New patent hints at ongoing development of Samsung’s foldable smartphone

We exclusively revealed back in May last year that Samsung is working on a dual screen, possibly foldable smartphone codenamed Project Valley. Since then there have been reports that Samsung will launch this device in the coming year. We’ve also seen patents which show that Samsung has been working on technology for its foldable smartphone. A fresh patent has popped up which shows that the company continues to work on technology for the foldable smartphone, thus adding fuel to the rumors that it will indeed release a foldable smartphone in 2017.

The patent details that this smartphone of the future will fold in half and reveal a port connector which will be used for charging when the device is folded. It also mentions that this smartphone design will feature either a fingerprint sensor or an iris scanner, Samsung is expected to introduce iris scanners to its smartphones with the Galaxy Note 6. Samsung filed for this patent in November last year though it merits mentioning here that it is the U.S. version of a similar Korean patent that the company filed for in 2014.

Samsung starts mass producing industry’s first 512GB NVMe SSD

Samsung, the world leader in the SSD market, has announced that it has started mass producing industry’s first 512GB NVMe SSD in a single BGA package. These SSDs would be used in next-generation ultra-slim laptops and PCs. These new SSDs weigh just one gram, and its surface area is approximately a hundredth of a 2.5-inch SSD.

Dubbed PM971-NVMe, the new SSD features an extremely compact package that comes with all the essential components including the controller, DRAM, and NAND flash memory. The new lineup of SSDs will be offered to laptop and PC markers in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage variants later this month. Sequential read and write speeds are said to be 1500MB/s and 900MB/s, respectively.

Jung-bae Lee, senior vice president of Memory Product Planning & Application Engineering Team at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung’s new BGA NVMe SSD triples the performance of a typical SATA SSD, in the smallest form factor available, with storage capacity reaching up to 512GB. The introduction of this small-scale SSD will help global PC companies to make timely launches of slimmer, more stylish computing devices, while offering consumers a more satisfactory computing environment.

Samsung plans to introduce more NVMe SSDs later this year to rapidly expand its market share in the next-generation premium laptops, tablets, and hybrid computing machines.

Express your love for Putin with a custom-made Galaxy S7 featuring his portrait

Russian president Vladimir Putin has made quite a reputation for himself as the undisputed leader of one of the most powerful countries on this planet. It goes without saying that there are many who are devoted followers of this man and perhaps when those people are out to buy a smartphone, they might pick one up that has Putin’s portrait on the back. Lucky for them there’s a company that sells custom-made Galaxy S7 complete with the president’s portrait.

There isn’t any shortage of companies that perform after-market customization on smartphones. We’ve seen countless companies dip smartphones in gold and bling them out with diamonds and what not. Caviar is one such company and it’s selling the Samsung Supremo Putin Rubino for $27,000, this handset has a portrait of the Russian president on the back and is adorned with 190 ruby stones. It’s only going to make three of these handsets so you can rest assured that $27,000 gets you some exclusivity as well.

If you’re not an oligarch but someone with moderate wealth and an affection for Putin, perhaps you might like Caviar’s Samsung Supremo Putin handsets which also feature his portrait and are available for $2,600 in yellow gold and $2,400 in white gold. This isn’t the most subtle of ways to declare your love for Putin, but as they say, different strokes for different folks.

Samsung to add ads to its Internet-connected TVs in Europe

Samsung released a lot of smart TVs in past few years, and almost all recently released TVs are smart ones. Most of the smart TVs released in the US by the South Korean TV giant are based on the open source Tizen platform. It is now being reported that the company has started showing more ads on its premium TVs in a bid to increase revenue.

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Samsung added new tile advertisements to the main menu bar of its premium Internet-connected TVs last year in the US to generate more revenue from its “struggling” TV business. Now, the company is also planning to expand the same ad program to Europe in the coming months.

Samsung is the biggest TV maker in the world, and it was recently awarded as the best TV brand in the UK. However, if the company starts showing ads in its premium TVs, it would certainly annoy a lot of users who have invested a good chunk of their money for a premium video experience. What do you think about it?

T-Mobile to launch Pink Gold Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in the Netherlands next month

Last month, Samsung took the wraps off a Pink Gold variant of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in South Korea. Unfortunately, the company failed to provide a launch date for the handsets. It simply branded them as “coming soon”. However, independent technology blog GSMinfo.nl has today published a report claiming that T-Mobile will start selling the devices in the Netherlands on Thursday, June 23.

Aside from being anodized in a new hue, the Pink Gold models of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge pack identical internals to their standard Gold, Silver, Black and White counterparts, meaning they will both continue to sport a Snapdragon 820/Exynos 8890 Octa CPU, an Adreno 530/Mali-T880 MP12 GPU, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP selfie shooter.

At this precise moment in time, it’s unclear whether the Pink Gold variants of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be sold exclusively through T-Mobile in the region, but we expect them to be available through a handful of different operators and third-party retailers seeing as this is intended to be more of a general release and not a limited one.

Samsung allegedly withdraws from the camera market in Australia

Back in November, Samsung revealed that it had to close down its digital camera division in Germany due to a lack of sales, then one month later it withdrew from the industry in the United Kingdom. However, despite pulling the plug in two main regions, sales still looked to be up in Australia. Up until now, that is. Earlier today, an independent retailer in the region published a statement claiming the South Korean company will not be sending any more inventory to the country and that it informed bricks-and-mortar stores to concentrate on selling old stock.

This doesn’t mean that the firm won’t be bringing its first 360-degree camera to the Australia, though. The Gear 360 will still launch according to schedule later this year in a handful of the region’s largest standalone retailers where it will carry a price tag of around AU$350-400. The device is also expected to be stocked in Samsung’s Experience Stores in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney where representatives will offer customers the opportunity to have some hands-on time with the device before they purchase it.

It’s worth noting, however, that the authenticity of this claim can’t be verified at this time, so we’ll have to take this revelation with a considerable pinch of salt until we have more information on the matter. It does seem fairly likely, though, seeing as the manufacturer has been struggling with sales of its NX1 DSLR camera for some time now, which was at one time its best selling shooter.

Samsung’s offering Galaxy owners in India 20% off their next Domino’s order when they install a software update

Many smartphone owners are hesitant to install the latest updates on their handsets. Unfortunately, it’s unclear what the cause for this unexplainable firmware upgrade anxiety is, but Samsung hopes to cure it starting in India by offering customers 20% off their next Domino’s order when they install an update on their device. So far, the promotion has been spotted by one Galaxy J7 user in the region who reported seeing a coupon in the My Galaxy application when they installed a Security Maintenance Release (SMR) on their phone.

It’s unclear if Samsung is planning to bring this upgrade incentive to other regions. However, we presume that it will remain exclusive to developing markets where smartphones have smaller amounts of storage and users have a more restricted amount of data, so it will, therefore, encourage them to install even the most minor non-user facing updates, such as bug fixes, stability improvements, and monthly security patches. If owners are struggling to install the latest firmware, the coupon reveals that they can head over to their local Samsung Experience Store where a representative will be available to help them.

Samsung’s fortunes in Q2 will be aided by semiconductors and the Galaxy S7

Samsung’s earnings in the second quarter of this year are expected to be helped by strong sales of the Galaxy S7 flagship as well as increased demand for the company’s semiconductors. Market analysts are of the view that Samsung is going to report second quarter profits above expectations due to lower smartphone inventory, improvements to its flash memory chip business as well as the stellar performance of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge.

Korean brokerage Shinhan Investment expects Samsung to bring in operating profits of 7 trillion won. If it does breach this level it will be the first time in nine months, Samsung last reported 7.39 trillion won in the third quarter of 2015. Samsung’s mobile business is expected to post a 12.4 percent year-over-year increase in operating profits primarily helped by the flagship duo. Most brokerages in Korea appear to agree that Samsung is going to have a solid second quarter, raising their guidance for profits from 5 trillion won to as much as 7.19 trillion won.

Samsung updates Game Tools and Game Launcher

Samsung has released an update to Game Tools and Game Launcher for the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. The new update (version 0.0.26) brings Help section in both the tools and the latest version of Game Tools allows recording of gameplay videos up to 4GB in file size.

The floating key of Game Tools can now be hidden even while recording the gameplay, and more apps will now be blocked from showing notifications when the “no alert mode” is enabled.

Samsung introduced Game Tools and Game Launcher with the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge as the company wanted to provide avid mobile gamers with an inbuilt tool to customize graphics settings and resolution as well as an easier way to record gameplays and share them with friends.

Samsung wins “best TV brand of the year” award in the UK

UK consumer choice magazine Which? has labelled Samsung’s television lineup as the “best TV brand of the year”. The publication managed to obtain all of the firm’s thirty-eight products and pit them against the competition in a series of rigorous in-house tests. The results were so impressive that the company was put at the top of the list of “Best Buy” products, which  is essentially a catalogue consisting of all the leading electronics brands.

Samsung also received the prestigious 10th Anniversary Award, which is given to the manufacturer with the most number of Brand-of-the-Year awards over the past ten years, for the seventh year running. Sung Il-kyung of Samsung Display was very happy with the result and went on to say: “Samsung TVs have been rated on top by many prestigious European magazines and other media outlets. The company will maintain its lead in the European TV market with its top-notch TV products.”

[Poll] Is Samsung slow with rolling out Samsung Pay to other countries?

Earlier this year Samsung confirmed that it’s going to expand Samsung Pay to seven new countries in 2016. The list of countries includes Australia, Canada, Brazil, Singapore, Spain and the United Kingdom, Samsung Pay has already gone live in China. The company has been gradually rolling out this service and some believe it’s not doing that as rapidly as it should be. What are your views on the matter, should Samsung be racing to cover as many markets as possible? The mobile payments space is already crowded and it would do well for Samsung to carve a niche out for itself sooner rather than later. Do you agree or disagree? Vote below and let us know what you think in the comments section.

Samsung teams up with Citibank for Samsung Pay in Singapore

It was only two weeks ago that Samsung launched a pre-registration page for customers in Singapore, enabling them to sign up for an opportunity to test Samsung Pay before it goes live in the country. The company today announced its partnership with Citibank Singapore Limited for Samsung Pay. This partnership will enable Citibank credit cardholders to make payments on the go using their compatible Samsung handsets.

“The partnership with Citibank, alongside our ecosystem of partners across payment networks, banks, retailers and merchants, assures customers that they will be able to enjoy the full benefits of using Samsung Pay almost anywhere in Singapore,” said Eugene Goh, Vice President, IT & Mobile, Samsung Electronics Singapore.

Those who have registered to be a part of the beta test will be among the first to preview Samsung Pay in Singapore ahead of its launch in Q2 2016. Samsung says that thousands have signed up for this opportunity and now that registration has been closed, it’s going to progressively notify those who have been selected for the Samsung Pay Beta Test Program. Samsung Pay compatible handsets for customers in Singapore include the Galaxy Note 5 4G+, the S6 edge+ 4G+, the Galaxy S7 4G+ and the S7 edge 4G+.

Global model of the Galaxy A9 Pro receives Wi-Fi certification

We recently spoke about the international variant of the Galaxy A9 Pro (A910F) hitting the markets soon. Back then, we encountered an import listing on Indian site Zauba, which has usually been accurate about device launches. A new revelation has now almost confirmed the arrival of this global Galaxy A9 Pro model with the device officially receiving Wi-Fi certification.

The Wi-Fi Alliance certification indicates that a launch is very near. It’s important to note that both the single-SIM and dual-SIM models of the smartphone have been certified by the authorities, which is suggestive of the fact that both models will be available at launch. Unfortunately, the certification doesn’t tell us when or which markets will get the handsets first but you can expect more information to follow in the days to come.

The Galaxy A9 Pro packs a 6-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage (expandable), the octa-core Snapdragon 652 chipset, a 16-megapixel f/1.9 rear camera, an 8-megapixel f/1.9 front-facing sensor, Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and a 5,000 mAh battery.

A Samsung 2016 Android Wear smartwatch could come – but don’t get your hopes up

Samsung is a formidable giant within Android, so it makes sense that Samsung would be at the heart of any discussion regarding Google’s world-dominating mobile OS. Once again, all eyes are on Samsung due to what has been perceived as the company’s interesting relationship with Android Wear.

This week’s issue concerns the Korean giant’s long-term, short-term, or no-term commitment to the wearables platform. What started as an off-the-record statement to Fast Company turned into a major piece of news that has now been reinterpreted by Samsung to say that the company is still committed to the platform.

Who’s telling the truth, who’s remaining neutral, and what should we make of it? These questions are worthy of a formidable response, which I provide below.

Samsung, Android Wear, and journalistic responses

For those who may not know the nature of the claim, Fast Company says that “Samsung executives told Fast Company today that no more Samsung Android Wear devices are in development or being planned.” The reasons pertain to Tizen’s battery efficiency and its use on the majority of Samsung devices. When pressed about this after the story went public, the Korean giant responded to tech site Digital Trends in an email, “Samsung has not made any announcement concerning Android Wear and we have not changed our commitment to any of our platforms.”

The first question that should be answered pertains to the company who published the news. Should we trust the source of the information? I believe we should for one reason: journalism is a field where you can’t get away with making statements and claims that aren’t true. Yes, there is room for speculation (analysts speculate about tech companies all the time), but there is no room for making false statements in the field. Get caught making claims of “X company said Y” when there is no evidence, and journalists could end up in a very serious lawsuit. So, it’s highly unlikely that FC falsified Samsung’s statement.

The email response Samsung gave to DT should be trusted for the same reason that we should trust FC: journalists and tech sites wouldn’t risk a lawsuit behind false statements.

Evidence suggests Samsung and Android Wear are “separated,” possibly “divorced”

Samsung said in its emailed response to DT that it 1) has made no announcement about Android Wear and that 2) it is committed to its “platforms” (plural here), but evidence suggests that Samsung and Android Wear are at least “separated,” if not entirely divorced, at this point. We’ve discussed what Samsung said, but now it’s time to take a look at the company’s actions.

Android Wear (used with “AW” in some portions of this piece) was “born” in 2014, and Samsung, as was the case with other OEMs like LG, Asus, Sony, and Motorola, decided to join in on Google’s wearables platform with its Gear Live smartwatch running AW. That was back in 2014; since then, there’s been neither smoke nor fire between Samsung and AW. Nothing. Nothing in 2015, and nothing yet in 2016 (and half the year is gone as of June).

This tells us that Samsung launched one AW device in 2014, with little incentive or motivation to do so since the platform’s inception. Asus and LG have launched second-generation AW timepieces, as has Motorola. AW isn’t making much money or profit, but that hasn’t stopped these companies from committing for 2015. Samsung didn’t commit in 2015, and there’s nothing to suggest the noncommittal trend will change in 2016.

If you see a guy who’s “committed” to his wife but spends his outings, dinners, and vacations with another woman, what would you think? Even if he says, “I’m still committed,” his flirtatious actions with the “woman on the side” will give you reason to suspect that he’s already divorced from his wife (even if the paperwork isn’t official yet). This leads me to think that, despite Samsung’s claim that it’s still “committed,” it and AW are already separated, with the company having divorced it in everything but the fine print.

The Odds of a 2016 Samsung Android Wear smartwatch

What are the odds that Samsung has a 2016 Android Wear smartwatch in store? Well, there’s little to suggest that the idea is nothing more than a myth.

Since 2014, when Samsung announced the Gear S, the company has gone on to make the Gear S2 in 2015, and a Gear S3 is on the way if we know Samsung. These smartwatches run Samsung’s homegrown Tizen OS, though, not Android Wear.

A look at one of the latest studies from Strategy Analytics shows that Samsung’s Gear smartwatch lineup is towering over Android Wear – who, by the way, doesn’t even get a mention in SA’s trend data: the company merely nods AW by placing it Iin the category of “others.”

You must understand the “others” is where most Android OEMs are when it comes to global smartphone shipments. Motorola, LG, HTC, etc., are often placed in the “others” category when it comes to smartphones; the same can be said here. Samsung, then, with its Gear smartwatches, is outselling all Android Wear OEMs, including Motorola with its 360 and LG with the Watch Urbane model. In Q1 2016, Samsung sold 600,000 smartwatches as compared to an undefined number of AW watches sold (a combined 1.4 million smartwatches sold).

The “others” sold a combined 1.4 million smartwatches in Q1 2016, but AW is but one platform or entity in “others”: there’s also other companies like Omate who produce full-fledged mobile Android smartwatches that don’t run AW, and companies such as Pebble with its Pebble Time and Pebble Time Round smartwatches (as well as the Pebble Steel lineup and the original Pebble Classic), as well as Fitbit with its Blaze smartwatch, not to mention AW manufacturers LG, Asus, Motorola, Sony, Casio (WSD-F10 smartwatch), and TAG Heuer (Connected Carrera). The “others” category must also take into account manufacturers who only make fitness bands, since analytical data doesn’t separate fitness band and smartwatch sales all that often.

If you consider that these 9 companies (and there are far more than this; just consider Xiaomi with its fitness bands, Jawbone, and Withings, just to name a few) sold 1.4 million smartwatches together, being benevolent and considering all things equal, the 6 AW manufacturers mentioned sold nothing over 250,000 smartwatches. Samsung’s 600,000 bests any AW manufacturer by nearly 2.5 times the sales. The average sales numbers for each “others” company gets extremely small as you add manufacturers to its list.

With these numbers, I ask this question: if you saw that your smartwatch was outselling Google’s entire platform, would you give up selling your platform to make a watch for Google’s?

Google bought and sold Motorola; the search engine giant also purchased and is now selling Boston Dynamics. Why? The key reason, as always, is financial profitability. With AW bringing in little income for Samsung, why should the Korean giant waste its financial profit on a platform that would bring smaller profitability than its own Tizen platform?

Conclusion

I could’ve written this piece to say that we shouldn’t discount Samsung’s fascination with Android Wear, but I wouldn’t be honest if I did. The truth is that Samsung, as the company said in its emailed response, hasn’t formally announced its divorce from AW – but the handwriting is on the wall. Samsung’s failure to launch a more current AW follow-up to the first-generation Gear Live, and the company’s launch of the Tizen-based Gear S2 in 2015 (and its claim that Tizen is “The OS of Everything”)  indicate that there’s very little affection left between Samsung and AW. Samsung could very well make another Android Wear smartwatch down the line, but the company will study market trends and potential profitability before diving in.

And yet, companies make last minute decisions all the time. So, with that said, Samsung could still make an Android Wear watch; if the company does, however, the decision will be made at the last minute. There’s still a glimmer of hope for a miracle, but Android Wear fans, don’t get your hopes up.

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge gets June security update in Spain

Samsung is rolling out an update to the Galaxy S7 edge with fixes for security vulnerabilities from the month of May. This is the second time the company is pushing out the Android security patch before the month is over, with the first time being the May update for the Galaxy Note 4, which arrived in April. Well, today’s rollout is a one-off case – the update is available for the S7 edge on carrier Orange over in Spain, but we’re sure it will make its way to the unlocked variants soon enough.

Got a Galaxy S7 edge? Make sure you check the notifications to see if the update has arrived for you; if not, head into the Settings » About device menu and hit the Download updates manually button to try your luck.

Samsung registered 5,000 patents in the US last year

Samsung has been involved in a series of patent lawsuits over the past few years. After its patent wars with Apple and Nvidia, the South Korean electronics giant has been accused by Huawei for patent infringement. Samsung has been registering a number of patents over the past few years to prepare for such patent lawsuits.

Samsung said earlier this week that the company owns over 11,145 patents, and the company filed 23,385 patents last year alone. The company has strategically filed most of its patents in the US, 38,809 to be exact. Samsung has also filed 30,741 patents in South Korea, 15,654 patents in Europe, 10,030 patents in China, 6,746 patents in Japan, and 8,165 patents in other countries.

The company spent over $13 billion in R&D last year alone and stood second only to IBM in terms of patents filed in the US. Samsung has been in the second spot for ten straight years starting from 2006. An end product like a smartphone needs tens of thousands of patents, and if the company gets sued for just one of those, it becomes quite hard to sell that product in the market.

Samsung said, “We own the largest number of patents in the US in terms of accumulation in order to respond effectively to patent disputes to be occurred in the US. Most of them are related to smartphones, smart TVs, memories, LSI system, and currently used or will be utilized for strategic projects in the future.

New Good Lock update showcases Samsung’s ability to learn and customize

Good Lock is Samsung’s latest experiment in mobile, and it has come a long way since its initial release. When we first reviewed the app, we thought it had some major problems such as a constant location settings popup, major battery drain, and bland pastel colors. Samsung then took to fixing the auto update bug, home button bug, SD card issues, and added charging recognition so that users would start to see it as they have the current TouchWiz touchscreen, while a later update added a card-style recents menu option for vanilla Android fans who longed for it. A new Good Lock update from the Korean giant goes beyond what we’ve seen so far to provide far more customization now that many software bugs have been squashed in previous versions.

In this new Good Lock update, bearing version number 24.0.9, Samsung has tackled some of the notification shade issues we had with Good Lock before by providing a dark notification shade (you’ll still need to tweak it to achieve it, but its presence is superior to its former absence). Samsung has enhanced Routine color settings, added a mobile hotspot option in the Quick Panel settings, now lets you change the Clock color on the lockscreen, and enabled an AOD Quick Setting for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge users, among other things. In the Good Lock changelog, as can be seen below, Samsung says that “feedbacks from customer are applied,” indicating that Good Lock is devoted to customer feedback. So yes, Samsung is listening to your grievances and trying to meet them.

We’d have to say that the new dark notification shade is probably the greatest addition to Good Lock since its inception. The lighter colors have some appeal with vanilla Android fans, but some TouchWiz users are not too keen on them and would like a little of the familiarity back into the experience.

Good Lock has only had an official release on the market for about a month and is compatible with the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 Active, and the Galaxy Note 5. For those willing to dive in, the APK is below.

If you haven’t given it a spin yet, go ahead. The water’s getting nicer all the time.

The Gear 360 is now up for pre-order in Germany for €349

Residents in Germany can now pre-order Samsung’s first 360-degree camera, the Gear 360. The unit is listed on the company’s online website with a relatively low price tag of €349 ($390) and is expected to start shipping to customers on Friday, June 10.

This news comes just two weeks after the Gear 360 went up for pre-order in the UK, and a month after it debuted in South Korea, so it certainly looks like Samsung is on target to have the device successfully launched in Europe by the end of Q2.

Samsung Pay Mini to launch for Android and iOS next month

According to a new report published by ET News, Samsung will launch a new version of its mobile payment platform next month that will be available for use on all Android-powered smartphones operating on Marshmallow and iPhones running iOS 8+. The service has been dubbed Samsung Pay Mini and will not take advantage of the Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology that put Samsung Pay ahead of the competition. Instead, it will be used exclusively to process online payments, which is an area that the standard build of Samsung Pay lacks use in as this type of transaction only accounts for around 20% of all payments.

The way that Samsung Pay Mini will work is extremely simple. Users will store their credit/debit card information within the secure application, then when they go to purchase a product on their smartphone from an online store or marketplace, the payment gateway will automatically input their details, pay for the goods, then store a copy of their receipt. However, users will first have to authenticate themselves by way of a fingerprint of 6-character password. If things go well, and the service picks up traction relatively quickly, the company has plans to bring a client to both Mac and PC later this year.
