Speedo On for Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro provides enhanced swim tracking features

Speedo is bringing its Speedo On swimming platform to Samsung’s wearable devices. The Speedo On app will be available on Samsung’s Gear Sport smartwatch and Gear Fit2 Pro wearable fitness tracker. Both wearable devices have been announced by Samsung today at its IFA 2017 press conference.

The Speed On app is capable of measuring key swim metrics such as lap count, lap time and the type of stroke. It helps users incorporate their swim workouts in their personal fitness goals.

All of the data that’s collected by Speedo On is compatible with Samsung’s S Health platform. It provides users with a broader picture of their overall health and wellness goals.

The app provides users with an analysis of their swims and tracks their progress against their fitness goals. It also provides training programs, tips and advice tailored to the user. Speedo On adds a social dimension to swimming.

It enables users to follow other swimmers, take part in challenges and share their achievements. The app enables Gear Fit2 Pro and Gear Sport users to complete time trials and get their SWOLF (a measure of swimming efficiency) score.

The Speedo On app is going to be pre-installed on both the new Gear Sport and Gear Fit2 Pro. Samsung’s new wearable devices will be released in the near future.

New Gear IconX earbuds are more comfortable, can launch Bixby

Samsung launched its Gear IconX activity tracking wireless earbuds last year. Samsung claimed that these cord-free lightweight earbuds provide a perfect fit with three different sizes of eartips and wingtips. We mentioned in our Gear IconX review that we love how they fit and feel in the ears, even though they weren’t fully ready for prime time.

Samsung today announced its new Gear IconX cord-free earbuds. Not much has changed. The design has been slightly updated to make the earbuds more ergonomic and lightweight. Samsung says that they’re more secure and comfortable to use.

The new Gear IconX measures 18.9 x 21.8 x 22.8 mm and weigh just 8 grams per earbud. There’s 4GB of internal storage. They connect via Bluetooth v4.2. The 82mAh battery promises a talk time of up to 4 hours and music playback time of up to 7 hours, quite a lot higher than the original IconX.

The bundled charging case has a 340mAh battery and it provides one extra charge on the go. The Gear IconX is compatible with any Android device running version 4.4 and up.

Like its predecessor, the new Gear IconX has an accelerometer and a heart-rate monitor for activity tracking. The data is synced with Samsung’s S Health platform. It’s capable of tracking distance, speed, duration, heart rate, and calories burned.

The Gear IconX turns on automatically when it’s placed in the ears. Users can control the music via the built-in capacitive touch controls. There’s also a Voice Guide feature on the Gear IconX which provides instant voice feedback on workout progress.

Unsurprisingly, they are also capable of launching Bixby when paired with a supported device like the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8. Samsung is going to start selling the new Gear IconX soon in black, gray and pink colors.

The new Gear IconX will cost 229.99 euro and will be released by November this year.

Minor Samsung Gear S3 frontier update rolling out

Samsung is rolling out a new software update to the Gear S3 frontier, with the update having a single new feature that should nevertheless be useful for a lot of users. The smartwatch now supports vibration notifications for third-party messaging apps, which means notifications in apps like WhatsApp should be even easier to notice. The latest Gear S3 frontier update (a small 7 MB download) is rolling out in the US and should be making its way to other regions in the near future.

The Gear S3 frontier has seen regular support from Samsung, although the Korean giant did take its time fixing an S Voice issue that had been introduced to the smartwatch with a prior update. The latest update comes just as Samsung is gearing up to launch the Gear Sport at IFA, something the company had confirmed at the launch of the Galaxy Note 8. Hopefully, this support will continue even after the Gear S3’s successor goes on sale.

Galaxy Note 8 China launch expected on September 13

Samsung’s market share in China has been decreasing over the past few quarters. It’s having to deal with intense competition from local manufacturers. The company will certainly be hoping to gain more ground with its new flagship smartphone.

Samsung is yet to confirm when the Galaxy Note 8 China launch is going to take place. It will certainly launch its latest and greatest phablet in the world’s most lucrative smartphone market. Precisely when it does that remains to be seen.

According to a new report, the Galaxy Note 8 China launch is going to take place on September 13. There’s no word on the pricing as yet. It’s likely going to cost the equivalent of almost $1,000 as it does in other markets.

There have been rumors recently that Samsung might launch a cheaper version of the Galaxy Note 8 in China. The only major difference will be that it will have 4GB of RAM. This variant was spotted at China’s TENAA certification agency recently.

The Galaxy Note 8 with 4GB of RAM is expected to cost $100 less than the 6GB variant. It’s unclear if Samsung will launch this variant in any other market. Previous reports have suggested that the Galaxy Note 8 China launch will take place on September 13.

The company is expected to release the handset in China on September 23.

Galaxy A5 and A7 (2018) specs to include Infinity Display and 6GB RAM

Samsung is likely going to unveil the Galaxy A (2018) series early next year. It was recently rumored that the Galaxy A series will receive Samsung’s Infinity Display. Samsung launched the Infinity Display with the Galaxy S8 earlier this year.

It has been very well received even though some customers don’t like that Samsung has repositioned the fingerprint sensor at the back to accommodate it. That’s precisely what it’s going to do with the Galaxy A (2018) series as well.

A new report out of China brings us purported specifications of the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 (2018). Both handsets are reportedly going to feature a 1080p resolution Infinity Display. They will also have a fingerprint sensor at the back.

The Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 (2018) will reportedly be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor coupled with 4GB and 6GB of RAM respectively. They’re also said to feature a dual selfie camera.

No word on the specs of the Galaxy A3 (2018) as yet. It’s likely that the Infinity Display may not be present on the entry-level model of this premium mid-range series. It’s also not clear at this point in time if the Galaxy A5 and Galaxy A7 (2018) prices will be increased as a result of these new changes.

Samsung is yet to confirm anything about the new Galaxy A series so until it does that, take this with a grain of salt.

New Verizon firmware update speeds up facial recognition on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+

Verizon is rolling out a new firmware update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. While these updates keep the core OS at version 7.0, they’re a bit heftier compared to the average monthly firmware update.

That’s because it bundles many of the tweaks that have been released for these handsets over the past few months. The firmware update speeds up facial recognition on the handsets. It adds a “Faster recognition” option for those who are using Face Recognition as a mode of securing their device.

Verizon recommends that users allow the device to take its time and thoroughly scan their face before turning on the new option if they’ve not yet configured facial recognition on their handset.

Verizon has also added the navigation bar “show and hide button” with this update. It’s a small dot on the left side of the navigation bar. Users just need to tap it in order to show, hide or lock the navigation bar in its place. This was first rolled out as part of a firmware update over two months ago.

The update also brings a variety of other fixes that have been detailed in the official changelog. Firmware version G950USQU1AQGL and G955USQU1AQGL is now being rolled out for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ respectively by Verizon.

Those who own these handsets on its network should expect to see an update notification very soon.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 8 units may ship earlier than expected

T-Mobile starting taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 on August 24. Like all of Samsung’s carrier and retail partners, it’s supposed to release the handset on September 15. However, it appears that T-Mobile is keeping up its tradition of shipping out pre-ordered units early.

Some customers who pre-ordered a Galaxy Note 8 from T-Mobile have now started receiving text messages from the carrier. The messages confirm that their Galaxy Note 8 order is being packed and that it will ship soon.

The messages are meant to serve as a reminder to customers that their payment cards will be charged once the units ship out. It’s quite possible that T-Mobile customers will receive their units well before September 15.

We’ve seen T-Mobile do this with previous Samsung flagships as well so it’s not surprising. The Galaxy S8 was shipped earlier than its official release date by T-Mobile.

This isn’t something that customers will complain about. No one ever complained about having to wait less for a new flagship smartphone to land at their doorstep.

Those who would rather purchase the handset from a T-Mobile retail store will have to wait until September 15. It’s highly unlikely that the carrier will release the new flagship in its stores across the country before then.

SamMobile Daily Recap: August 29, 2017 — Bixby Voice, Samsung Pay and more!

Samsung wants you to know it appreciates your continued support

There’s no denying the fact that the Galaxy Note 7 debacle turned a number of customers to the dark side (iOS), but the majority stuck with Samsung while it rebuilt its reputation—and now it wants you to know its grateful.

On Tuesday, the firm took to its YouTube channel to share a short “Thank You” video that’s filled to the brim with testimonials from Galaxy Note owners, explaining how the premium range of smartphones has changed their lives.

We’d be biased if we didn’t explore the possibility of Samsung using the Galaxy Note 7’s misfortune as a marketing ploy, but if that’s what it needs to do to restore confidence and drive sales, who can blame it?

For those who missed its unveiling, the stylus-toting Galaxy Note 8 sports a 6.3-inch Infinity Display, a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB of RAM, a 12MP dual-camera setup, an 8MP front-facing shooter and a 3,300mAh battery.

[Poll] Are you happy with the price of the Galaxy Note 8?

Whatever way you slice it, the Galaxy Note 8 is an expensive smartphone. In fact, it’s the priciest handset Samsung has ever released—and we’d be lying if we said that hasn’t scared off a fair few customers. However, the company is doing all it can—by offering former Galaxy Note 7 owners a discount, for example—to put the premium-priced device in the hands of more consumers.

It’s impossible to tell whether its efforts are paying off at this precise moment in time, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find out whether potential customers are happy with the price of the Galaxy Note 8. To find out, we’ve put together a poll, which you can cast a vote in below. You can also expand on your response in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

In addition, the upgrade addresses a relatively frustrating bug that resulted in the text size for labels beneath application logos on the home screen not adjusting according to the on-screen zoom settings, which will come as good news to those who take advantage of the firm’s Easy Mode layout.

Top Galaxy Note 8 features you should care about

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note 8 last week. It’s the company’s first new Note phablet in two years. Naturally, Note fans were very excited to see what Samsung had in store for them. The company has now started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 in some markets across the globe.

Those who have been thinking about getting one need to make a decision. In order to make that decision easier for them, we present a list of top Galaxy Note 8 features that customers should care about.

Display

Top Galaxy Note 8 features you should care about

It would be an oversimplification to suggest that the Galaxy Note 8 has a slightly larger version of the Galaxy S8’s display. The Galaxy Note 8’s 6.3-inch display recently won the highest ever grade from DisplayMate.

It won that grade because Samsung has made further advancements to the display technology. The Galaxy Note 8 truly has the best smartphone display available on the market today, and there’s nothing that can come close, other than Samsung’s own Galaxy S8 and S8+.

New S Pen

Note fans swear by the S Pen. The stylus enables them to be more productive on the move. Samsung makes improvements to the S Pen with each iteration of the Galaxy Note, and it’s crucial in ensuring that Galaxy Note customers keep coming back for more.

The new S Pen is water resistant so it can work on the Galaxy Note 8’s display even when it’s soaking wet. It has 4,096 levels of pressure sensitiveness, and it powers features like Live Message, PENUP, Screen Off Memo, and Translate. You can read all about the S Pen’s new features here.

Dual Camera + OIS

This is without a doubt one of the biggest features of the Galaxy Note 8. It’s Samsung’s first smartphone with a dual camera system. It also happens to be the first smartphone to offer optical image stabilization on both rear cameras.

Samsung has really pushed the envelope on mobile photography with its two 12-megapixel rear sensors. The main sensor has a f/1.7 aperture wide-angle lens while the second has a f/2.4 aperture telephoto lens. 2x optical zoom and 10x digital zoom are supported.

The Galaxy Note 8’s camera app also comes with a new feature called Live Focus. This enables users to add a depth-of-field Bokeh effect to their photos. Users can adjust the density of the blur before or after taking the photo. It also adds a portrait mode, similar to the one seen on the Apple iPhone 7 Plus.

App Pair

Samsung has long enabled users to take full advantage of their Galaxy Note’s large display by opening two apps side-by-side. It has now made the process of launching two apps together easier with the Galaxy Note 8. The new flagship comes with a feature called App Pair.

Users can create an App Pair in the Apps Edge panel. The two apps that they select will always launch side-by-side whenever they tap on the pairing in Apps Edge. For example, an app pairing for Google Maps and Spotify will launch both apps immediately in Multi-Window mode, reducing the steps one usually needs to perform to use two apps side by side.

6GB RAM

Many Samsung fans have long advocated the need for more RAM in its flagship smartphones. The Galaxy S8 variants released widely had 4GB of RAM. Samsung did release variants of the handset with 6GB of RAM but they were limited to select markets.

The Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung’s first flagship smartphone to ship globally with 6GB of RAM. This also helps differentiate the company’s Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups, and a productivity powerhouse like the Galaxy Note 8 should have more memory to handle everything that’s thrown at it. Good on Samsung for realizing that.

Are these top Galaxy Note 8 features enough to make you spend nearly $1,000 on the handset? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung partners with 20th Century Fox and Panasonic to create a metadata platform for HDR10+

Samsung has announced that it’s teamed up with 20th Century Fox and Panasonic to create a royalty-free dynamic metadata platform for High Dynamic Range (HDR) through an associated certification program called HDR10+. The entity will license the platform to content companies for a nominal administrative fee from 2018.

“As leaders in entertainment, the three companies are ideal partners for bringing HDR10+ into the homes of consumers everywhere,” said Jongsuk Chu, Senior VP of Visual Display at Samsung. “We are committed to making the latest technology available in our TVs and are confident that HDR10+ will deliver premium content.”

HDR10+ provides unprecedented picture quality on all displays with brightness, color, and contrast automatically optimized for each scene, according to Samsung. With HDR10+ dynamic tone mapping, every scene is individually enhanced to bring to life vibrant visuals and achieve unprecedented picture quality.

There are several benefits that come with adopting HDR10+. Using the metadata, for example, content creators, content distributors, TV manufacturers and device makers can improve the viewing experience for audiences in the coming years, though it will likely take a while to be adopted by industry leaders.

“Panasonic has a long history of working with industry leaders to develop lasting technical formats. We are delighted to work together with 20th Century Fox and Samsung to develop a new HDR format, which will bring consumers so many benefits,” said Yuki Kusumi, Executive Officer at Panasonic.

Samsung to build an open-connected IoT ecosystem

Samsung is attempting to build an open-connected ecosystem wherein all of its household appliances can be controlled using a universal application—or Bixby. The platform is still on the drawing board, reports Business Korea, noting the firm is hoping to start development in the not-too-distant future.

“Samsung Electronics’ Connected Vision has a philosophy that all innovation will be built on openness and partnership,” said Patrick Chomet, Executive VP of Product Strategy. “We are planning to build an open, connected ecosystem where the large volume of hardware, software and services are organically harmonized.”

It’s believed that the long-rumored Bixby Speaker will sit at the center of an ideal Connected Vision household, letting residents control their microwave, refrigerator, TV and oven using their voice. They’ll also be able to use the platform to place calls and send messages via their Galaxy-branded smartphone.

If Samsung decides to develop an API for third-party developers, the possibilities would be truly endless. You’d be able to, for example, use your Harmon Kardon-built Bixby Speaker to close the blinds in your bedroom, turn off the lights and even lock your property’s gate—all without having to step out of bed.

Don’t get too excited, though. Everything outlined in the report is pure speculation, but it all seems feasible, especially when you consider that the IoT market is expected to grow from 655.8 billion in 2014 to an eye-watering $1.7 trillion in 2020. That’s definitely something Samsung would want to be a part of.

A new 360-degree camera possibly being developed by Samsung

Samsung unveiled its new Gear 360 (2017) VR camera alongside the Galaxy S8 back in March this year. It’s capable of shooting true 4K video in 360-degrees. The camera’s predecessor could only shoot 360-degree video in “near-4K.” The Gear 360 (2017) became available for purchase just a few months ago. It’s now being offered as a pre-order incentive to Galaxy Note 8 customers.

It appears that Samsung has a new 360-degree camera in the pipeline. The company has filed for a new trademark for “360 Round.” This suggests that it’s readying another VR camera for launch. There aren’t a lot of details available about this product right now.

The trademark listing reveals that the 360 Round carries model number SM-R260. It could very much be related to Samsung’s Gear 360 lineup because the existing camera’s model number is SM-R210. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything about it as yet, though.

It’s unclear when the Gear Round might be unveiled by Samsung. It’s due to launch new products at its IFA 2017 event later this week. Perhaps we’ll hear more about its new 360-degree camera in Berlin.

What we do know is that Samsung is going to unveil a new Gear Sport smartwatch at IFA 2017. It will also talk about its updated fitness tracking wearable device, the Gear Fit2 Pro.

Samsung still hasn’t decided the Galaxy Note 8 price for South Korea

Samsung appears to be having a difficult time in deciding how much it’s going to charge for its new flagship smartphone in its home country of South Korea. The country’s government is pushing to cut down telecom costs and that initiative is making it difficult for Samsung to set local prices for the Galaxy Note 8.

Samsung hasn’t started taking pre-orders for the handset in South Korea as yet. Pre-orders are already live in North America and some markets in Europe. The handset costs around $950 with 64GB of onboard storage in the US. The Galaxy Note 8 will be similarly priced in other markets across the globe.

The company is expected to start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 from September 7. It will release the Galaxy Note 8 on September 15, the very same day its new flagship is released in major launch markets.

Industry watchers believe that Samsung is going to set the price tag slightly over 1 million won or $890. It would cost a bit more than the Galaxy Note 7’s 988,900 won or $870 starting price last year. It’s currently charging 990,000 won or $880 for the Galaxy S8+.

The Galaxy Note 8 will comparatively be cheaper in South Korea if Samsung opts for this price tag. Industry watchers fear that this nominal difference between the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8+ prices might end up cannibalizing the latter’s sales in favor of the Galaxy Note 8.

Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh has already said that the company will try to price the Galaxy Note 8 below the one million won mark as it doesn’t wish to make the new flagship too expensive for the average customer.

For those unaware, Android 7.0 bundles a slew of neat new features, including enhanced notifications, stricter application permissions, new emoji and refined battery saving tools, in addition to a plethora of much-needed bug fixes, stability improvements, and speed optimizations.

Related: Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy J7 (2016), and Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2015) could get Android 7.0 updates soon

From what we can tell, the release hasn’t reached all variants of the Galaxy J7 (2016) in Russia, which resulted in us drawing the conclusion that it’s making the rounds in stages—and if that turns out to be the case, it could take anywhere from two-to-four weeks to reach your handset.

If you’d like to see if the update is ready for your Galaxy J7 (2016), head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually. You don’t need to, though. You can always wait until you receive a push notification prompting you to download and install the over-the-air upgrade.

The next S Pen might include a microphone

Samsung wants to make the S Pen more than just a stylus that you use to jot down memos on your Galaxy Note handsets. It filed a patent application back in 2014 which detailed how a microphone and speaker can be integrated into the S Pen. This would enable users to use the S Pen to communicate in a phone call.

Samsung recently filed a patent which explained how the S Pen could be used to measure the amount of alcohol in a user’s breath. Samsung’s vision for the S Pen of the future includes microphones and digital signature capability.

Samsung’s head of technology strategy Chai Won-cheol has revealed that the company is working on a more sophisticated digital signature solution with several partners.

“When combined with Samsung’s authentication solutions such as Samsung Pay, Knox and iris and fingerprint recognition, S-Pen’s digital signature will create new demands in the B2B market,” he added.

The digital signature feature will eliminate the need for users to physically print and return documents that they need to sign. They will use the stylus to digitally sign documents.

It will be representative of their handwritten signature and will, at least in theory, provide more security to prevent tampering in mobile communications.

Chai Won-cheol also confirmed that Samsung is conducting studies to ascertain whether it would be useful to integrate a microphone in the S Pen. This is the first confirmation that we’ve seen from Samsung regarding this possibility.

It remains to be seen how soon Samsung can bring these ideas to market. Galaxy Note fans should certainly keep their fingers crossed for the Galaxy Note 9’s S pen.

Samsung Pay now supports MobiKwik in India

Samsung Pay has been updated with support for MobiKwik, following its introduction on Samsung Pay Mini earlier this year. Like PayPal, the platform allows customers to add money to a virtual wallet, which can then be used for payments both in-store and online.

Here’s the full changelog:

  • MobiKwik (Android 7.0 Nougat+)
  • UPI: Transfer money between your bank accounts
  • UPI: Send money directly from contacts
  • Import previously added CC/DC on sign-in
  • Usability improvements

This news comes less than a month after Samsung Pay added compatibility for debit cards issued by the State Bank of India (SBI), the largest bank and most widely-used bank in the region, and around two months after the payment service arrived on the Galaxy J7 (2016).

Samsung is hoping to bring the scaled-down version of its mobile payment platform, Samsung Pay mini, to smartphones from other manufacturers—like LG and Sony—in the coming months, according to recent reports. Whether it will happen though is a completely different story.

Bixby Voice India launch delayed till next month

It has hardly been over a week since Samsung rolled out Bixby Voice across the globe. The assistant only supports Korean and English languages currently. Despite that, Samsung has now rolled it out in over 200 countries across the globe. Galaxy S8 owners in India have got the short end of the stick, though.

The Bixby Voice rollout was halted in India shortly after it went live. It was later confirmed officially that the rollout had been halted due to a bug which had to be fixed. Samsung India didn’t confirm when Bixby Voice would go live for Galaxy S8 owners in the country.

Those who own the flagship handset aren’t feeling happy about this. They already had to wait for Bixby for a very long time. All Galaxy S8 users across the globe have it now and they still can’t use it.

Galaxy S8 owners have been reaching out to the company through the Samsung Members app. One such user has received a response which suggests that Bixby Voice won’t be out in India until the end of September.

Perhaps Galaxy S8 owners in India may not have to wait for an entire month as the schedule is subject to change. Samsung is yet to provide a confirmed release date for Bixby Voice in India.

Thanks, Ravi!

Samsung took to Twitter on Monday to tease an event it’s hosting in Berlin on Wednesday, August 30. While we don’t know exactly what the firm is planning to showcase, it did reveal that it’s some form of wearable, leading us to believe it’s the upcoming Gear Sport (SM-R600).

Rumored to be aimed at fitness fanatics, the Gear Sport is expected to ship with a host of precise health-monitoring features, including a dedicated swimming and rowing mode, in addition to a slew of the latest internals, like a dual-core Exynos processor and at least 1GB of RAM.

According to the unit’s certification documentation, the Gear Sport will be the firm’s first wearable to ship running its in-house Tizen 3.0 operating system out of the box. It also looks like it will support both standard Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) and Wi-Fi Direct for expedited data transfer.

We’ll be reporting live from the venue in Berlin, so be sure to check back on Wednesday to find out exactly what Samsung’s been working on. If you want to kill some time between now and then, why not check out our hands-on coverage of the recently-announced Galaxy Note 8?

Samsung investing $7 billion to increase flash memory production

Aiming to capture rising demand, Samsung has announced that it’s going to invest $7 billion in a Chinese semiconductor plant to increase flash memory production. Samsung already happens to be the world’s largest manufacturer of memory chips and it wants things to stay that way.

The money will be invested over a three-year period and will be poured into Samsung’s Xi’an semiconductor plant in China, the company confirmed in a statement today.

NAND flash memory chips are used in a variety of devices such as connected smart objects to smartphones. Samsung is the undisputed leader in this market. It accounted for 41 percent of the global NAND market in the second quarter of this year. That’s more than double the 18 percent market share of its closest rival Toshiba.

That’s not all. Samsung is also the biggest manufacturer of dynamic random access memory or DRAM as it accounts for 44 percent of the entire market. The company is now making timely investments to enhance capacity. It wants to ensure that rivals don’t chip away at its lead.

The increased production capacity for NAND flash memory chips made possible by this $7 billion investment will be used to meet the growing demand for chips destined for smartphones and other consumer electronic devices.

Star Pink Galaxy Note 8 launched in Taiwan

Samsung has a habit of offering exclusive color options for its flagship smartphones in select markets across the globe. Taiwan happens to be one of those markets. After launching the Pink Galaxy S8+ there earlier this year, Samsung has now launched a Star Pink color option for the Galaxy Note 8 in Taiwan.

The Galaxy Note 8 will be widely available in four color options – Midnight Black, Maple Gold, Orchid Gray and Deep Sea Blue. Star Pink appears to be exclusive to Taiwan. Samsung has a good reason for offering the handset in this color.

This is a particularly popular color with customers in Taiwan. According to a report, 30 percent of all smartphones sold in the country are touting some shade of pink. This is why it makes sense for Samsung to offer this color option in Taiwan.

The pink color isn’t just limited to the back panel. The metal frame is pink and so are all of the buttons. The same color has also been applied to the handset’s S Pen.

Everything else remains the same. It’s the same Galaxy Note 8 handset with its Exynos 8895 processor and exceptional 6.3-inch Super AMOLED Infinity Display.

The price remains the same as well. Customers in Taiwan can purchase the handset for TWD 34,200 or $1,075.

SamMobile Daily Recap: August 28, 2017 — Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 8 and more!

Galaxy S5 Neo Android 7.0 Nougat update rolling out now

The Galaxy S5 Neo has almost hit its two-year support window for major Android platform updates. Samsung is going to sneak in one last major Android update before the handset is relegated to the long list of devices that are no longer supported.

The Galaxy S5 Neo Android 7.0 Nougat update was spotted on a variant of the handset last month that surfaced at the Wi-Fi Alliance for certification. That’s when it became clear that it was going to receive the Nougat update, even though quite a lot of people thought it wouldn’t get the update.

It’s a bit surprising to see that the Galaxy S5 Neo is getting the Nougat update. Samsung has a habit of forgetting about the many spin-off variants that it releases not too long after they hit the market. I’m sure those who are still holding on to this device won’t complain about getting Nougat.

Samsung has started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Galaxy S5 Neo. Firmware version G903WVLU1CQH4 is rolling out now for the handset in Canada. It’s only a matter of time before it rolls out in other markets.

Galaxy S5 Neo owners will receive an over-the-air notification on their handset when the update goes live in their market. The firmware files are also available for download from our firmware section.

Galaxy Note 8 display wins the highest ever A+ grade from DisplayMate

DisplayMate, a specialist in display calibration and optimization, recently put the Galaxy Note 8’s OLED display through extensive testing. The Galaxy Note 8 holds up Samsung’s record of knocking it out of the park with its flagship displays. DisplayMate has awarded its highest ever A+ grade to the Galaxy Note 8’s display. “It is the most innovative and high performance Smartphone display that we have ever lab tested,” it added.

This seems like a repeat of five months ago when DisplayMate said that the Galaxy S8 had the best smartphone display on the market at that point in time. It’s fitting that it’s another Samsung flagship that has taken that crown from the Galaxy S8.

The Galaxy S8’s Super AMOLED Infinity Display reached close to 3K resolution (2960 x 1440 pixels at 570 ppi) with a peak brightness of over 1,000 nits. The Galaxy Note 8 hits similar figures, (2960 x 1440 pixels at 521 ppi), with a peak display brightness of over 1,200 nits. It sets a new record for smartphones.

The Galaxy Note 8’s Native Color Gamut is larger due to its new high saturation “Deep Red” OLED. It boasts a very impressive 112 percent of DCI-P3 and 141 percent of sRGB / Rec.709 Gamuts for enhanced color reproduction in high ambient light.

Its 6.3-inch display is 20 percent larger in screen area compared to the Galaxy S8 and 14 percent larger than its predecessors. The display itself is 22 percent brighter than the Galaxy S8. It’s certified by the UHD Alliance for Mobile HDR Premium so it can play 4K HDR content that’s produced for full-fledged 4K UHD TVs.

The Galaxy Note 8 has four user selectable screen modes and an option to adjust the white point. It has a Screen Reflectance of 4.6 percent which is close to the lowest that DisplayMate has ever measured for a smartphone. The Contrast Rating For High Ambient Light ranges from 88 to 128 which is the highest that it has ever measured for a smartphone.

DisplayMate’s in-depth review of the Galaxy Note 8 can be accessed by clicking on the source link below. It explains in great technical detail just what makes the Galaxy Note 8’s display the best smartphone display on the market right now.

Galaxy J7+ with dual cameras seen in the flesh in newly leaked photos

The Galaxy J7+ is confirmed to be the Galaxy J7 model that will introduce a dual camera setup to Samsung’s budget lineup, thanks to a leaked promotional image. We have already seen the J7+ in the flesh through leaked images, and new images of the device have now surfaced online, serving to prove that dual rear cameras are indeed going to be a thing on more than just Samsung’s latest flagship.

Rumors say the J7+ will have 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel sensors working in tandem at the back, with f/1.7 and f/1.9 aperture on each respectively. The dual cameras will sit flush with the body, unlike the ones seen on an Oppo phone with dual cameras in one of the pictures. The front shooter will be a 16-megapixel sensor, slightly higher in resolution than the front camera on the regular Galaxy J7 (2017). Other specs are expected to include a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, the Exynos 7870 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery (which would be considerably smaller than the 3,600 mAh battery on the standard J7). A Bixby button has been rumored as well, although it can’t be seen on the device in these images.

While there’s no word on when the Galaxy J7+ will be made official, it shouldn’t be too long. Samsung is probably waiting for the excitement around the Galaxy Note 8 to settle down a bit before unleashing its second smartphone with a dual rear camera. It also remains to be seen if the Galaxy J7+ will be launched outside China. As usual, we’ll let you know should any new information crop up before the phone’s official launch.

Samsung Internet Browser’s new features are out of beta

Samsung rolled out an updated beta of its Samsung Internet Browser three weeks ago. The beta brought several new features including a night mode. The company has now updated the stable version of the browser to version 6.0 and has made all of the new features available to everyone.

The night mode is one of the biggest features included in this latest version of Samsung Internet. It helps limit the amount of bright light that users are subjected to. The night mode can be activated from the main menu in Samsung Internet.

A “Sync with Samsung Cloud” option is onboard as well. It enables users to back up and restore their bookmarks and preferences in the cloud. Users will also see a new splash page which mentions all of the different ad blocking extensions that are available to users.

The latest version of the app also opens up compatibility for non-Galaxy smartphones. Samsung confirmed this when the beta was released. The beta could also be installed on any Android device. This means that Samsung Internet is no longer exclusive to Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung Internet Browser version 6.0 is now available for download from the Google Play Store. You can also grab it from our APK page.

Galaxy A (2018) series may tout the Infinity Display

The Infinity Display was introduced by Samsung with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ earlier this year. Samsung has now brought it to the Galaxy Note series as well with its latest flagship. It would make sense for the company to bring the Infinity Display to its premium mid-range smartphones too.

According to Twitter leakster @mmddj_china, the Infinity Display is coming to the Galaxy A series. Samsung already launched this year’s iteration of the series back in January. Therefore, it can reasonably be expected that the Galaxy A (2018) will feature the Infinity Display.

Whether or not Samsung will bump the resolution up to Quad HD for these handsets remains to be seen. What we can expect is for them to have dual-edge curved displays with minimal bezels. This would allow for an increased screen-to-body ratio on those handsets.

No further information is available at this point in time about the Galaxy A (2018) series. It will certainly come with upgraded internals and might possibly have a dual camera system as well.

Samsung has said nothing about the Galaxy A (2018) as yet so take this with a grain of salt. We still have a long way to go before the company is due to unveil the latest iteration of its Galaxy A series.

Samsung expects to sell more than 11 million Galaxy Note 8 units

The Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung’s first new Note phablet is almost two years. It did launch one last year but we all know what happened with the Galaxy Note 7. The initial reaction to the launch has been good so far and it looks like the Galaxy Note 8 will end up doing well for the company.

Samsung is hopeful that it will be able to move quite a lot of Galaxy Note 8 units. When asked about the company’s sales target for the new device in a recent interview, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh said that the company expects to sell over 11 million units.

He pointed out that the Galaxy Note 5 sold 11 million units and that Samsung is hopeful that the Galaxy Note 8 will sell more than that.

The Galaxy Note 5 was the last new Note handset from Samsung. It performed reasonably well, even though many Galaxy Note 4 owners decided against updating because of several crucial factors.

The company may adjust shipments down the line because it wants to keep selling more Galaxy S8 units as well. Samsung is aiming to sell 48 million units of the Galaxy S8.

Samsung started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 in key markets on August 24. The handset will be released on September 15.

Samsung’s Lee files appeal against his jail sentence

Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and the heir to the conglomerate, was sentenced to five years in prison last week. The sentence was handed down after his trial on allegations of embezzlement, bribery and perjury.

Lee was alleged to have paid bribes to former President Park Geun-hye of South Korea through her close confidant in order to win the government’s support for a crucial merger of two Samsung subsidies which helped cement the Lee family’s control over the conglomerate.

The prosecutors had actually recommended a 12 year sentence for the Samsung heir but the court saw it fit to only award a sentence of five years.

“As a lawyer I cannot possibly agree with the juridical decisions and acknowledged facts involved in the verdict,” said Samsung’s in-house attorney Song Woo-cheo when the sentence was confirmed, adding that the decision would be appealed.

Lee has now filed an appeal against last week’s ruling through his attorney Kim Jong-hoon. Lee’s attorneys say that they don’t accept the verdict and they remain confident that he will be cleared of all charges in the appeals court.

It’s likely that the first hearing for the appeals trial is going to take place at some point next month.

Galaxy Note 4 receives August 2017 security patch

The Galaxy Note 4 may not be eligible for any major Android platform updates but it’s still receiving the latest security updates. Samsung has rolled out the August 2017 security patch for the Galaxy Note 4.

This handset is almost three years old now and well beyond the two-year support window for major platform updates. However, Samsung is ensuring that some of its previous flagships receive the latest security updates. It rolled out the August security patch for the Galaxy S5 not too long ago as well.

It’s rolling out firmware version N910FXXS1DQH8 for the unbranded Galaxy Note 4 in the Netherlands. The update weighs in around 200MB and brings the August security patch. It also includes optimizations for the battery as well as tweaks for overall device stability and memory management.

The Android Security Maintenance Release for the month of August 2017 brings fixes for 28 vulnerabilities in the operating system. It also includes fixes for 12 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) which were found in the manufacturer’s own software.

Samsung has rolled out this firmware update for the Galaxy Note 4 in several markets across Europe, including Italy and Austria. Head over to our firmware section to check if it has been rolled out in your market.

Galaxy Note 8 launch date in India might be September 11

Having unveiled the Galaxy Note 8 officially, Samsung can now get down to the business of selling its new flagship smartphone. The company’s carrier and retail partners in several markets across the globe started taking pre-orders for the handset on August 24. Samsung is going to release the Galaxy Note 8 in markets like North America and parts of Europe on September 15.

Samsung’s regional arms will confirm pricing and availability details for their respective markets. According to a new report, the Galaxy Note 8 launch date in India is likely to be September 11. The report also mentions that the 64GB variant of the handset will be priced at Rs. 74,900 or $1,170.

Amazon India is reportedly going to be the exclusive online retailer for the Galaxy Note 8. Customers will also be able to purchase it from Samsung’s retail locations as well as the company’s offline retail partners.

Samsung will apparently only start taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 8 from September 11. The handset may not be released before the first week of October.

It’s pertinent to mention here that this report comes from an unofficial source so there’s a possibility that it may not be accurate. Samsung India is yet to confirm pricing and availability details for the Galaxy Note 8.
