New Galaxy Note 8 update brings more intuitive Live Focus controls

The Galaxy Note 8, in danger of suffering a similar kind of software support neglect as the Galaxy Note 4, received an update this week after what seemed like eternity despite the few months that the phone has been on sale. There’s more than just the regular stability and performance enhancements in the new Note 8 update, but one thing Samsung hasn’t talked about in the changelog is the more intuitive Live Focus controls in the camera app. Verizon mentions these in its changelog, and frankly, the Live Focus improvements are minor yet rather handy.

For starters, every time the phone is in the right position to take a Live Focus (or portrait, if that’s what you prefer calling it) photo, the “Live focus ready” text that comes up now has an opaque yellow background to make it stand out. When the camera isn’t at the right distance from the subject, you now see a more direct “Move farther away from subject” heads-up, and the same goes for when there’s not enough light for Live Focus to work. Oh, and the slider for adjusting background blur is accompanied by “+” and “-” icons that you can tap on to instantly switch between zero and maximum background blur.

New Galaxy Note 8 update brings more intuitive Live Focus controls

Finally, the button to switch between front and back cameras has been replaced by a back button at the top left of the display when you’re shooting in Live Focus mode, which is great if you have the on-screen navigation keys set to hide by default. When you’re shooting normally, it turns back into the camera switch button. Of course, you can continue to swipe up or down on the display to switch between the front and rear cameras, which remains the most convenient option to do so.

Being just the second update for most users since the phone launched, it’s natural that Samsung is still tweaking a few things, just like it did after the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ went on sale (remember all the changes the new on-screen navigation bar went through?). With Live Focus being a brand new feature, it’s only natural that Samsung has added a few tweaks that should ideally have been there from the beginning. But better late than never has always been Samsung’s motto, and it’s nice to see an update that took so long to arrive brought more than just the security patches it’s expected to.

Have you noticed anything else that wasn’t there on your Note 8 before the update came in? We know most of you probably haven’t gotten the update yet, but if you have, do let us know how your phone’s been running since you installed it.

Samsung patent envisions palm scanning for remembering forgotten passwords

Samsung is proud for having the highest number of security features on its latest flagships, offering no less than five different methods (iris, facial recognition, fingerprint, pattern, and pin) for keeping the device locked and protected. Samsung also seems to be working on ways to ensure those who use a password for their device and tend to forget it can easily get a hint for what their password might be, or at least that’s what a patent application by the company suggests.

Palm scanning for more than just telling your future

Everyone knows a person’s palm can have a myriad of lines that differ for each individual, and while palm readers might be using these for foretelling your future, Samsung thinks it can be used to help users remember their password by hiding the hint in those scattered palm lines. This isn’t a method for unlocking similar to iris or fingerprint scanning; instead, Samsung wants to use palm scanning to ensure that the user requesting for the password hint is the owner of the device.

According to the patent, the front camera is used for taking a picture of the palm, which means it’s not a totally secure method despite how unique your palm lines might be. But, unlike photos of your face, someone taking a picture of you holding out your palm would be somewhat rare. Plus, the patent suggests that the password hint won’t be simply displayed on the screen, but scattered across the lines in a haphazard manner. That would make it harder for someone just glancing at your phone to see what’s being displayed, while being simple enough for your mind to suddenly light up and recall that forgotten password.

Of course, there’s no telling whether palm scanning, in either this form or something different, will ever see the light of day. Samsung’s focus is probably on 3D face scanning at the moment so it can take on the iPhone X (and any future iPhones with FaceID). But then again, the palm scanning might not take a lot of work to implement, so it may just end up on the company’s phones at some point in time.

What’s your take on Samsung’s implementation for remembering passwords using a scan of the user’s palm?

Recent Galaxy S8 and S8+ update may have broken fast charging for some users

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ haven’t been getting updates as frequently as one would like for flagship phones. They’re also not getting them quickly enough, as evident by the fact that many regions saw the October security patch hitting the devices in mid-November. If some reports from S8 and S8+ users are to be believed, the November update, which started rolling out a few days back, couldn’t come sooner, as the update with the October patch may have broken fast charging on some units.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ fast charging may be broken for some

Owners of the S8 and S8+ have taken to Twitter and the Samsung community forums to voice complaints about fast charging no longer working on their device after grabbing the latest update. The problem seems to be software-based, as folks say fast charging doesn’t work even with Samsung’s original charger and with fast charging enabled in the battery settings. We checked our devices to see if fast charging is working and none of our units seem to be affected, so it’s possible this isn’t a very widespread issue.

But that’s not to say it’s not a serious issue, especially for S8 owners who already deal with average battery life and would hate for fast charging to stop working as well. It’s also unclear if the update with the November security patch fixes things. Samsung or its forum admins haven’t acknowledged the issue yet, but hopefully, the company will fix this problem soon and not ignore it in lieu of its work on the Android 8.0 Oreo beta.

We will update this article once Samsung offers a statement on the matter. For now, let us know if your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ has been affected, and if some solution worked for you, feel free to tell us so we can share it with our readers.

Verizon’s Galaxy S6, S6 edge and Note 5 get November security update

Verizon seems to be working around the clock to update Samsung phones on its network every time a major new Android vulnerability rears its head. It was only last week that we saw the November security patch update, with a fix for the KRACK exploit that affects almost every modern Wi-Fi-enabled device, hit the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge on Verizon. A similar update is now making its way to the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, and Galaxy Note 5, Samsung’s 2015 flagship phones.

Verizon pushes out November security update to 2015 flagships

Like most monthly updates, this one doesn’t bring any changes other than the latest security fixes. The November security patch includes fixes for 61 Android vulnerabilities and six exploits that affect only Samsung devices. Detailed information on what these vulnerabilities are and how they affect a device can be seen here. Naturally, some vulnerabilities have also been kept a secret to prevent exploitation before the update has reached all eligible devices.

To see if the update is available on your Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, or Galaxy Note 5, tap the Download updates manually option in the Settings » Software update menu on your phone. It should start downloading instantly, but if it doesn’t, simply try again after a while.

International unlocked Galaxy Note 8 is getting an update at last

In what has been an almost excruciating wait for Galaxy Note 8 owners, who spent a hefty amount to buy the device only to see no sign of a software update for more than two months, Samsung is finally pushing an update that includes the November security patch and a slew of other changes. The update, which started out in China and made its way to the T-Mobile Note 8 more than a week ago, is currently rolling out in Taiwan, and it shouldn’t take too long to reach other regions.

Galaxy Note 8 update brings security upgrades and more

In addition to the November security patch, the update brings improved performance in the Calendar, Gallery, Voice Recorder, and Reminder apps, a new secure Wi-Fi function, and a fix for an unexplained Samsung DeX error. The firmware version is N950FXXU1BQK6, and at upwards of 840 MB, is among the biggest OTA updates that don’t bring a major Android version upgrade that we have seen. But then again, with the time Samsung has taken to actually give us an update, it doesn’t surprise us all that much. Hopefully, future updates won’t take as long, especially those that bring the ever-so-important Android security patches.

To grab the update, go into your Note 8’s settings, tap Software update, then tap the Download updates manually option. We also have the firmware (for Taiwan) in our database, and at some point down the line, it should also be making an appearance on Samsung’s Smart Switch software for PC.

Samsung has a Swarovski SMARTgirl Limited Edition Galaxy S8+ in Spain

Over in Spain, Samsung is selling a special edition of the already special Rose Pink Galaxy S8+ called SMARTgirl Limited Edition. What’s in this edition? Well, Samsung is just bundling a shiny Swarovski case with the phone to attract the ladies, probably those who weren’t already sold on the regular Pink Rose Galaxy S8+. The case itself doesn’t seem to be as studded with jewels as usual Swarovski cases, since the price of the SMARTgirl Limited Edition is only €949.00. Well, that’s still a high price, but not as high as you would usually find such editions to be.

SMARTgirl Limited Edition Galaxy S8+ is, well, limited in availability

Samsung only seems to be selling this in Spain, and once stocks for the phone are over, it will be taken off the market. It’s possible Samsung will bring the special edition to other European markets, but it seems unlikely that will happen. Hopefully, Samsung will at least bring the Pink Rose Galaxy S8+ to other markets, maybe along with the Burgundy Red version once it ends its South Korean exclusivity.

For those wondering, yes, the SMARTgirl Limited Edition phone doesn’t make any changes to the specs. You get a 6.2-inch WQHD+ Infinity display, the Exynos 8895 processor, 4GB of RAM, 12-megapixel rear camera, 8-megapixel front camera, a 3,500 mAh battery, and Android 7.0 Nougat.

Samsung mass producing 2nd gen 10nm FinFET process technology

Samsung has announced today that it has started mass production of chips based on the company’s second generation 10nm FinFET process technology. Called 10LPP (Low Power Plus), the company says the second-generation process will allow up to 10 percent higher performance or 15 percent lower power consumption over the first generation 10nm process.

Second generation 10nm process technology hits mass production

Samsung has kicked off a new manufacturing line in Hwaseong, Korea to be able to meet the demand that will arise for chips based on the new 10 nm process. According to Ryan Lee, vice president of Foundry Marketing at Samsung Electronics, the company will now look towards 8nm as well as 7nm technology. We’re still some ways away from seeing mass production of 7nm chips, but at the pace Samsung is moving, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it bring 7nm to the mainstream by the end of next year.

Naturally, we can expect the new 10nm process to be used for building the Snapdragon 845 and Samsung’s own flagship smartphone processor for use in devices next year. It’s likely both chips will be focused on increased power efficiency rather than increased performance, unless Samsung can start making the new graphene ball lithium-ion batteries by next year, which probably won’t happen.

Latest Android 8.0 Oreo beta rolling out for the Galaxy S8 in the US

Samsung has released the third iteration of its Android 8.0 Oreo beta firmware in the United States, following its rollout in the United Kingdom last week. Unlike the upgrade that made the rounds over the pond, this latest update bundles a number of miscellaneous bug fixes, according to the lengthy changelog.

Related: Samsung has begun testing the Galaxy S9 with Android 8.0 Oreo

There could be a simple explanation for that, though: there’s a chance that the firm didn’t list all of the changes in its first changelog—but that seems unlikely. What’s more probable, however, is that Samsung had to patch a number of additional bugs exclusive to the Snapdragon variant of the Galaxy S8.

How do I check to see if the OTA is ready for my Galaxy S8?

If you’re enrolled in Samsung’s Android 8.0 Oreo Beta Program and would like to check to see if the latest update is available for your Galaxy S8, head into Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually—and while it’s downloading, be sure to check out our What’s New With Android 8.0 Oreo series.

You may soon be able to share your Samsung Pay transactions

Samsung has built a feature for Samsung Pay that allows users to view a list of all their past transactions and share them to various social networks, including Facebook and Twitter, according to a patent spotted on KIPRIS’ database.

Samsung Pay Story, which the firm describes as a “system for sharing buying experiences,” is expected to be introduced in a future update for Samsung Pay, in an attempt to spread awareness of the payment platform using social media.

The firm, as outlined in the patent documentation, will run a “Pay Story with Celebrities” campaign to encourage users to trial the feature. Influencers will be able to share details of their purchase, along with a snapshot and a rating.

It’s essentially Facebook’s check-in feature, but for purchases. Users will, of course, have the option to choose the information they want to share—so they don’t have to include the price or a picture of their purchase, for example.

Samsung’s long-term plan, however, is to turn Pay Story into a social network of sorts; users will be able to view a list of nearby facilities that accept Samsung Pay, together with their respective ratings and reviews (think: Yelp).

Samsung could build its own social network

There’s also scope for Samsung to expand Pay Story into a friends-based service, though that seems like a bit of a far-fetched idea at this precise moment in time—but that’s not to say that won’t happen in the not-too-distant future.

If enough people are taking advantage of Pay Story’s external sharing feature, there’s no reason why the firm shouldn’t let them to build a list of contacts within Samsung Pay who can view a hand-picked selection of their transactions.

Galaxy A7 (2016) gets update with S Bike mode support in India

Two weeks after the Galaxy A5 (2016) was updated with support for S Bike mode in India, Samsung is rolling out a similar update for the Galaxy A7 (2016) in the country. Samsung has announced availability of the update in its forums, and along with support for S Bike mode, the update also installs the Samsung Members app on the device and bumps the security patch date to November 1. The Samsung Members app was always available for download from the Play Store, and the update will install it for anyone who doesn’t already have it on their phone.

Galaxy A7 (2016) gains S Bike mode support

It’s the opposite for S Bike mode, however. While the phone will support S Bike mode after the update, you will have to download the necessary app from the Play Store before you can use it. For those unaware, S Bike mode is for bike riders who number in the millions in India and want to focus on the road instead of being distracted by the phone. Once enabled, S Bike mode disables all incoming calls and notifications, albeit with a provision for allowing calls to come through if they’re important.

S Bike mode also supports NFC tags for quick activation, and even for emergency calls, the user has to reduce the vehicle’s speed to below 10 kilometers an hour. The feature was first introduced on the Galaxy J series phones, and if you’re interested, you can check out this post to see how S Bike mode can be set up. The post targets Galaxy J smartphones, but the process should be the same for the Galaxy A5 (2016) and Galaxy A7 (2017).

The update should be rolling over the air, and you can force it show up right away from the Settings » Software update menu. You can also wait for an automatic notification reminding you of the update’s availability, although that can typically take a few days.

SamMobile Daily Recap: November 28, 2017 — Cinema LED Display, Galaxy S9 and more!

Galaxy S8 owners reporting frustrating camera focus bug

A number of Galaxy S8 owners have taken to Samsung’s Community Forum to report a frustrating issue that’s preventing their handset from automatically focusing when taking pictures using the default Camera application and third-party offerings, like Snapchat.

With autofocus out of play, one would think that you’d be able to use manual focus—but you can’t. No matter what mode you’re shooting in, the device consistently churns out blurry images—and that isn’t what you’d expect from $700+ smartphone.

Here’s the good news: Samsung has issued a statement on the matter, outlining a few things you can do to rectify the bug (listed below). If they don’t work, however, you can send your unit in for repair under the terms of the firm’s one-year warranty.

  • Ensure your handset’s operating system and all of your applications are up-to-date.
  • Gently tap the back of your unit to lodge any loose components back into place.
  • Clear all application caches and data.
  • Perform a full factory reset.

Hardware- or software-related?

We’ve contacted Samsung for some additional information and to ultimately find out whether the glitch is hardware- or software-related. We’ll update this post if/when we hear back. In the meantime, let us know whether you’re experiencing the issue.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 8 gets November security patch update in the US

Those owning an unlocked Galaxy Note 8 in the US are finally getting the latest security patches on their phone. An update with the November 2017 security patch is rolling out to the unlocked model of the Galaxy Note 8 in the country. Verizon, in fact, is also releasing an update for its carrier-locked variant, but that one seems to have only the October security patch (although it does include a fix for the KRACK Wi-Fi vulnerability).

Verizon’s update for its carrier-locked variant includes changes to the Live Focus interface in the camera. After the update is installed, the Live Focus ready notification will be shown with a bright yellow background, so it’s easier to know once the camera is ready to take a Live Focus photo. The update also adds “+” and “-” icons to the background blur adjustment slider so users can tap on them to increase or reduce the level of background blur in Live Focus mode in incremental steps.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 8 gets November security patch update in the US

It’s unclear if these camera app changes are included in the update for unlocked models or in the update for international variants. We can’t say until one of our Note 8 units gets the update, which could take a while judging by the pace of software updates for Samsung’s costliest flagship. If you’re using an unlocked Galaxy Note 8 in the US or elsewhere and have received this update, feel free to let us know by leaving a comment.

[Poll] Check out these concept images of a Galaxy S9 with minimal bezels

We had recently published a story talking about the possibility of the Galaxy S9 featuring as much as a 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. There’s no guarantee the rumor will pan out, but if the Galaxy S9 does launch with next to no bottom bezel and reduced top bezel, a couple of concept images give us a nice example of what Samsung’s upcoming flagship might look like.

These concept images are quite cool, and we’d love it if this is the final design of the Galaxy S9. It may not look uniform if the top bezel is bigger than the bottom bezel, but it would allow Samsung to keep the necessary components in place without using a notch and also take things closer to a true bezel-less design. Again, there’s no telling what the Galaxy S9 will actually look like unless live images of the device make an appearance, but if these concept images are anything close to reality, you won’t find us complaining.

Check out the concept images below, and let us know your thoughts through the poll and by leaving a comment!

Here are a few real-life images of the Burgundy Red Galaxy S8

The Burgundy Red version of the Galaxy S8 goes on sale in South Korea today, and it looks like some folks have already gotten their hands on the device. Ice Universe, a constant source of reliable information on Samsung devices, has shared pictures of the Burgundy Red Galaxy S8, with the pictures taken right after the phone was unboxed.

Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 in the flesh

In the flesh, the Burgundy Red treatment isn’t as striking as it is in Samsung’s promotional images, but the phone looks beautiful nonetheless. If anything, it makes us sad that red isn’t a color option that Samsung makes available at the very beginning of a flagship’s market launch. We can see a lot of takers for the Burgundy Red Galaxy S8, even though it is coming at a time when the S8 is no longer the latest Samsung flagship and will also be succeeded by the Galaxy S9 in a few months.

Here are a few real-life images of the Burgundy Red Galaxy S8

That’s not to say the Galaxy S8 isn’t an excellent phone, and at its current prices, it’s a great purchase. But one thing that needs to be kept in mind is that the Burgundy Red color, in addition to being exclusive to South Korea at the moment, doesn’t seem to be available for the Galaxy S8+, which is the handset we would recommend thanks to its bigger battery. But then again, there are plenty of consumers who prefer compact phones, and the Galaxy S8 is the best you can get in that department thanks to the fact that Samsung offers the same spec sheet across both models other than downsizing the battery on the non-Plus S8.

What you think of the Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 now that you have taken a look at real-life images of the phone?

Samsung has purportedly begun testing the Galaxy S9 with Android 8.0 Oreo

It looks like Samsung has begun testing the Galaxy S9 in earnest. Galaxy Club is reporting that both the regular S9 and the Plus models are currently being tested with Android 8.0.0 Oreo. There’s nothing concrete to go on here, but it should come as no surprise that Samsung is putting its upcoming flagship through the paces already. Software development takes time, and testing usually starts early to make sure the software and hardware work well together in the final product.

Galaxy S9 software testing underway with Android 8.0.0 Oreo

Galaxy Club notes that the Galaxy S9 is being tested on Android 8.0.0 and not Android 8.1, but that’s yet another unsurprising factor here. Samsung has never been the leader when it comes to launching new phones with the most current Android build, and Android 8.1 is in the beta stage for even Google’s Nexus and Pixel devices. Then there’s also the fact that not every point Android version upgrade has features that are targeted at non-Google devices.

Furthermore, Samsung often has some of those features already implemented in its software before Google brings them to the core Android OS. Samsung could switch to Android 8.1 at a later stage in the testing process, but going by the way the company usually handles things, it might not happen until a few months after the Galaxy S9 has gone on sale. The same goes for the Galaxy S8, which is most likely going to get Android 8.0.0 when the Oreo beta program ends and the official update begins to roll out.

Exclusive: Galaxy A7 (2018) might not launch in most of Europe

We can’t confirm if Samsung is throwing away the existing naming scheme for its upcoming Galaxy A smartphones, and we can’t be completely sure if the Galaxy A7 (2018) will be skipping most of Europe when Samsung’s new A series goes official. But we can say that the latter is looking somewhat plausible based on the information we have received. According to our sources, Samsung might not be planning to launch the A7 (2018) in most European markets, with only Germany, Poland, and Russia on the list of initial launch countries.

No Galaxy A7 (2017) for Europe?

While we can’t confirm it’s set in stone, it might not be surprising to see Samsung limiting Europe to the Galaxy A5 (2018). With the Infinity display on-board, the A5 (2018) could be the right device for those who prefer compact phones and those who like large displays. Just look at how compact the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8 is despite having plenty of screen estate. The Galaxy A7 (2018), if it has a display sized 6 inches or larger, may be a better fit for markets where big-screen phones are popular, while the A5 (2018) would offer the best of both worlds in other markets.

Of course, that’s just speculation on our part, and there’s no telling what the reasoning would be. But with no 2018 iteration of the Galaxy A3 in the works, it’s possible Samsung will make the A5 (2018) the primary and only option in some markets. It certainly wouldn’t be a move as bad as the one the Korean giant made back in 2015 when it chose not to release the Galaxy Note 5 in the Europe, and it might be that Samsung will decide to bring the A7 (2018) to the European continent at a later time.

Whatever the case, we’ll do our best to dig up more information to get a clearer picture of what the company is planning as far as availability of its 2018 Galaxy A phones is concerned.

Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 goes on sale in South Korea

What is perhaps the most exquisite color option for the Galaxy S8 has gone on sale in Samsung’s home country. The Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 can be purchased in South Korea starting today, and Samsung says the new color variant will also come to other markets in the future, although it hasn’t mentioned specific country names (as is usually the case with new flagship color variants).

According to Samsung, the “new, luxurious hue accentuates the elegance of the Galaxy S8’s ergonomic glass and metal form, creating a seamless and refined aesthetic that will resonate with a wide range of tastes.” That’s just a sugar-coated way of saying the Burgundy Red S8 looks beautiful, and we certainly agree. As with all other color variants, the front of the device remains black to make the Infinity display stand, with the Burgundy Red treatment given to the glass at the back and the metal on the sides.

Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 now available for purchase in South Korea

With the Burgundy Red color in the mix, the Galaxy S8 is now available in a total of seven color options (counting the Rose Pink variant launched in Europe). Yes, not all of them are available in every market, but that’s just the ground reality we will have to live with. Also, there seems to be no Burgundy Red version of the Galaxy S8+, and it’s unclear if it will be released in the near future (possibly in some of the other markets where the Burgundy Red S8 is going to be launched).

What do you think of the newest Galaxy S8 color?

Samsung’s 4K Cinema LED Display is en route to Europe

Samsung has revealed that it’s bringing its 10.3-meter-wide 4K Cinema LED Display to Europe. The first unit is currently being prepped for installation, as part of a partnership between the firm, Arena Cinemas and Imaculix AG, at Arena Cinema Sihlcity in Zurich, Switzerland, with a launch scheduled to take place next year.

Showcased at an event in South Korea back in July, Samsung’s high-resolution Cinema LED Display is an all-in-one theater screen that employs next-generation picture quality and enhanced audio to provide the best possible viewing experience, without the distracting gray stripes associated with traditional projectors.

Related: World’s first Cinema LED display unveiled by Samsung

“Based on elimination of the projector beam and the high luminosity of the Cinema LED, there are a host of new possibilities for interior design, and we are removing the existing furnishings, and implementing an innovative seating concept to provide a new kind of cinematic experience,” said Edi Stöckli, owner of the Arena Cinemas.

Cinema LED Display could make an appearance in your home

Samsung is looking to supply a scaled-down version of its Cinema LED Display to customers wanting one in their home, in an attempt to combat sluggish QLED TV sales, according to a recent report. Before that’s a reality, however, it will first need to find a way to slash the unit’s extortionate five-figure price tag.

Samsung narrows gap with Apple in Q3 smartphone sales, reveals new report

Samsung narrowed the gap with Apple in terms of smartphone sales in the third quarter, revealed data published by Strategy Analytics on November 28. The South Korean manufacturer maintained its lead in shipments, accounting for 21.2 percent of the market, followed by the Cupertino company with a 11.4 percent share.

Related: Samsung beats Apple in smartphone sales during Q3 2015

Apple accounted for a total of 32 percent of the industry’s combined revenue in the July-September period, while Samsung was responsible for 23.1 percent. That 8.9 percentage-point gap marks a drop from the 15.5 percentage points posted in the third quarter of 2015, according to The Korea Herald.

The Cupertino company also came out on top in the operating profit department

Apple was responsible for 69.9 percent of the total profit in the smartphone market in the third quarter, with Samsung accounting for a meagre 21.8 percent. The gap represents an 18.8 percentage point drop—down from 66.9 to 48.1—over the cited period, it has been revealed.

Strategy Analytics concluded that while Apple posted lacklustre performance results on the back of the delayed release of the iPhone X, Samsung was successful as it diversified its smartphone portfolio, which covers the budget Galaxy A and flagship Galaxy S series, even if the statistics suggest otherwise.

Samsung acquires AI startup to strengthen Bixby’s conversational skills

Samsung has acquired South Korean startup Fluently, which specializes in text-based conversational artificial intelligence, to strengthen Bixby. Launched in the United States back in 2015, the application is compatible with various third-party services, including Facebook Messenger, Telegram and WhatsApp.

It’s unclear if Samsung is planning on pulling the Fluently application from the Play Store, so it can use the technology exclusively for Bixby—we’ll have to wait and see. What we do know, however, is that Samsung Research, the firm’s new dedicated AI center, was the driving force behind the acquisition.

There’s no word on how much Samsung had to fork out, either.

The way Fluently works is simple: If you receive a messaging saying “Are you free for lunch today?,” for example, it recommends a set of AI-generated responses, like: “Sure, what do you fancy?” and “I’m down! I’ll create a calendar event.” Replies, of course, vary depending on the dialect of the respective user.

Samsung is aggressively expanding its AI capabilities

“Samsung is now aggressively expanding its AI capabilities by taking over related manpower and organizations, as it views that the technology will be applied to all areas in the future,” said Lee Byung-tae, a Professor at KAIST College of Business in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday, November 28.

SamMobile Daily Recap: November 27, 2017 — Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9 and more!

Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) break cover in case renders once again

Another batch of case renders have surfaced online allegedly showcasing the yet-to-be-announced Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018), seemingly corroborating everything we’ve seen of—and heard about—the units to date.

The Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018), as outlined in the renders, should ship with an Infinity Display and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, which is tipped to be in the same position as the one on board the upcoming Galaxy S9.

Related: Galaxy S9 could be previewed at CES in January, launched in March

Recent leaks and rumors suggest that the identical-looking, Android 7.1.1 Nougat-powered Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) will feature an Exynos 7785 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

This news comes less than a week after both units were spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s online database and in the same month they passed through Federal Communications Commission, indicating their release is imminent.

We don’t have any information with regards to pricing, but what we can provide you with is a fascinating concept to ponder: the Galaxy A5 (2018) and Galaxy A7 (2018) could come with different monikers when they’re released.

Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018)

As we noted in a post we published last week, Samsung may be unifying its model names—and if that’s true, we could actually be looking at the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8 Plus (2018). Nothing’s confirmed, though.

Samsung’s SeeColors Smart TV app helps the color blind see better

Samsung has teamed up with Colorlite to release a new application for its QLED Smart TVs that aims to help those with Color Vision Deficiency – commonly referred to as ‘color blindness’ – see a more true-to-life range of colors.

To get started, someone with – or who is looking for a diagnosis for – Color Vision Deficiency will need to take a “C-Test” using the firm’s recently-launched SeeColors application on a compatible Galaxy-branded smartphone.

The mobile application will then relay the result to a (Wi-Fi-)connected QLED Smart TV, which also has SeeColors installed, to calibrate it to compensate for the colors the person is unable to distinguish, like red and brown.

“Samsung is committed to making people’s everyday lives smarter and more convenient through technology and innovation,” said Hyeongnam Kim, Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business.

SeeColors is listed on the Galaxy App Store and Google Play Store

The SeeColors application is available to download from the App Store on all Samsung-branded QLED Smart TVs and through the Galaxy App Store and Play Store on the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8 line.

Galaxy S9 fingerprint sensor may come from a new supplier

According to a new report by ETNews, Samsung is looking at a new supplier to source fingerprint sensors for its next flagship, the Galaxy S9. The company has reportedly gone with a Taiwanese manufacturer that has supplied fingerprint sensors for Samsung’s mid-range phones and could be making those for the company’s flagship line as well if the Korean giant goes ahead with the contract. This would mean a loss in business for the existing supplier, which would be unsurprising given the sales figures that Samsung sees for the Galaxy S flagships.

Galaxy S9 fingerprint sensor to come from a new supplier

While renders suggest the Galaxy S9’s fingerprint sensor will be located below the camera module instead of the awkward position they take up on current flagships, nothing is certain at this point. Based on the report’s translation, this move only seems to involve changing the supplier rather than a switch to a new fingerprint sensor. Although, an improved sensor will surely be welcome, given how the ones Samsung currently uses aren’t as accurate as those used by the competition (and it’s not just because of their rectangular shape, as similar ones by companies like HTC and OnePlus work markedly better) .

As for an on-screen fingerprint reader, it is said that Samsung won’t be able to implement one before the Galaxy Note 9. The Galaxy S9 could also miss out on 3D face scanning technology even though the company has ordered related components, but as usual, all of these rumors need to be taken with a pinch of salt until more substantial information makes its way online.

Hotfix update fixes major issue in the third Galaxy S8 Android 8.0 Oreo beta

Samsung is releasing a hotfix update for the third Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ Android 8.0 Oreo beta to fix a serious issue that was preventing apps from opening. The app power monitor feature that comes built-in on Samsung’s software puts apps unused for more than three days to sleep, and while this is supposed to improve battery life, it was also preventing apps put to sleep from opening again in the latest beta firmware.

Hotfix update available for Galaxy S8 Oreo beta

With the hotfix update, that should no longer be a problem. You can get the update by going into the Settings » Software update menu and selecting the Download updates manually option. There’s nothing else on offer with this update other than the fix for the aforementioned issue, so for any other fixes and new features, we will probably have to wait for the next beta. We’re also unclear if the hotfix update is rolling out only in the UK, but we’ll update this story once we’re able to confirm (feel free to drop a comment if you’re getting this hotfix outside the UK).

Hopefully, the next beta will be accompanied by the second phase of the program, which will expand the beta’s availability to Germany, Spain, France, Poland, China, and India. The second phase will also bring us much closer to the official release of the Android 8.0 Oreo update, although it seems unlikely the final update will arrive anytime before next year.

Samsung shares drop following reduction in stock price target by Morgan Stanley

Samsung’s smartphone sales have been going strong, but they haven’t been the primary reason for the record profits the company has attained in the last two quarters. An increase in demand and prices for memory chips for smartphones and servers is what truly helped, but it looks like the chip business may not offer the same level of growth for Samsung’s financial numbers in the coming months. That’s according to Morgan Stanley, which has cut its recommendation on Samsung, causing the company’s shares to drop by 4.2 percent.

Samsung shares drop following Morgan Stanley report

According to the investment firm, NAND prices have started to reverse this quarter and the boom in demand for memory chips is set to peak soon, although another research firm believes the reaction to market trends was a “bit over-sensitive” in this case. According to Greg Roh, an analyst at HMC Investment & Securities, it was known already that “NAND prices are going down, which is actually needed to encourage sound demand and increase shipments. And Samsung is strong in NAND chips for data center SSDs (solid state drives) which will be less affected.”

Still, Morgan Stanley’s view on Samsung’s stock has gone from “overweight” to “equal weight”, and the firm has reduced the Korean giant’s stock target price by 3.4 percent, resulting in a drop in shares to a one-month low. That’s not to say Samsung’s shares are going to be affected much, and it’s possible the increase in demand for its OLED panels (now that Apple is using one on the iPhone) could counter the decline in stock price. Even with the 4.2 percent decline, Samsung’s shares are at an all-time high this year, with a rise of more than 47 percent.

Today’s drop also trails behind that which the company suffered after the Note 7 was recalled; Samsung’s shares dropped by 7 percent at the time as the biggest one-day price decline in the company’s history. Furthermore, shares of SK Hynix, the second largest manufacturer of memory chips, also fell by 3.6 percent following Morgan Stanley’s report.

Samsung has filed a number of smartphone design patents, but don’t get too excited

Samsung has filed a number of design patents with the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service. The sketches included in the documentation would lead you to believe that the company’s toying with a number of different designs for the Galaxy S9—but all is not as it seems.

The patents are actually for a number of different ways to house the antenna and required sensors for the full-screen smartphones Samsung is reportedly working on. There are, of course, more filings than will ever materialise—and that’s because the firm is exploring all its options.

Goodbye, notch

For that reason, we’re unable to deduce anything from these patents about the design of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S9. All we know is that it’s working on a slew of different ways to integrate the antenna and sensor into the frame, without having to introduce an iPhone X-esque notch.

Related: Galaxy S9 could sport a ‘full-screen’ design, reveals patent

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are rumored to sport a 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Infinity Display, respectively, a Snapdragon 845 processor and a pressure-sensitive Home button. They should both ship running Android 8.0 Oreo skinned with a new version of Samsung’s Experience user interface.

Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) spotted at the FCC

Samsung’s been working on a 2017 edition of the Galaxy J5 Prime, specs for which were revealed through the phone’s listing on a benchmark website. It seems the launch of the phone is imminent, as it has now been spotted at the FCC. The FCC listing is a recent one, dated November 24, so we can expect an official unveil of the device before the end of 2017.

Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) spotted at the FCC

The Galaxy J5 Prime was launched in September last year in markets like India and South Africa, so we’re already past the one year mark at which one would expect a sequel. The Galaxy J5 Prime (2017) isn’t a big upgrade if we look at the leaked specs, with only the software and front camera getting upgrades (from Android 6.0.1 to 7.1.1 and from a 5-megapixel sensor to an 8 MP unit). The display size is listed as being smaller than the original J5 Prime’s, but we can expect it to be a 5-inch unit on the 2017 edition as well.

The rest of the specs look like they will remain the same, including a 13-megapixel rear camera, quad-core Exynos 7570 chipset with 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of expandable internal storage. The battery size isn’t mentioned, but Samsung will hopefully provide an upgrade on that front given the complaints about battery life on the original Galaxy J5 Prime.

As far as a release date is concerned, there’s no telling when Samsung will make things official. We’re not even sure the phone will be called the Galaxy J5 Prime (2017), although we’re not disputing it either considering how the company loves adding the current year to the names of newer versions of existing devices.

Samsung develops (and patents) ‘graphene ball’ to speed up charging

The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) has successfully synthesized a now-patented “graphene ball” that can be used to make lithium-ion batteries last 45 percent longer and charge around five-times faster, it has been revealed.

Lithium-ion batteries—like one bundled on the Galaxy Note 8—take an hour to charge, but that will be reduced to around 12 minutes with the new graphene ball technology, announced Samsung on Monday, November 27.

The SAIT has been behind a number of commercialized technological breakthroughs, including the development of the cadmium-free Quantum Dot materials that are being used in Samsung’s high-end—and flagship—QLED TVs.

Li-ion was first introduced in 1991

Lithium-ion batteries were first introduced back in 1991 and have since been the standard for powering consumer-grade electronic devices; many, however, believe that the technology has now expired and have started looking for alternatives.

The graphene ball approach is just one of the many different advanced power methods being explored at the moment. There’s no guarantee it will ever see the light of day, though.

Samsung to supply LTE-enabled smartphones for UK emergency network

Samsung has secured a contract with the United Kingdom’s Home Office to supply LTE-enabled smartphones and related accessories for the emergency services network, which includes the ambulance, fire and police departments.

The region’s response bodies currently use an airwave system to communicate that’s limited to voice radio; however, Samsung’s network will provide a slew of additional cellular-based capabilities, including location services.

“Next-generation public safety communications is an important area of focus for Samsung,” said Hahn Suk-Jea, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ Global Mobile Business-to-Business Team on Sunday, November 26.

“We hope our partnership with ESN and UK emergency services organizations will bring our technology to the entire public safety community on the front line, supporting the great work they do every day,” Suk-Jea added.

Galaxy S8 Active

It’s unclear what specific smartphones the Home Office has ordered, but the Galaxy S8 Active would seem the most logical choice—if the firm can import it into the United Kingdom, that is—because it’s both durable and powerful.
