Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold: Have the clone wars begun?

A new foldable phone has been officially announced in China — not by Samsung but by one of its rivals — and it looks as if it was heavily inspired by the Galaxy Z Fold 2. It’s called the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold, and much like the Huawei Mate X2, it follows the design standard that was established by Samsung’s foldable series roughly two years ago.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold has a book-like design with a foldable panel on the inside and a rigid cover display on the outside. This is the same formula that was employed by both the Galaxy Fold and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 to great success. The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold attempts to create its own identity around the foundation that was laid down by Samsung but it ends up borrowing the Fold moniker.

The big question now is whether or not the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold can compete with the Galaxy Z Fold 2, at least as far as specifications are concerned. Availability-wise, Samsung remains the best foldable OEM because customers outside of China won’t be able to buy the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold through official channels. But barring availability, is the Galaxy Z Fold 2 under threat? Let’s have a closer look.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Mi Mix Fold: What has Xiaomi done differently?

Displays

Beyond the striking resemblance between the two foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold don’t have a lot in common. Xiaomi’s solution employs a cover display with an even narrower 27:9 aspect ratio, which might be too unwieldly for real practical uses. We feel like the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s cover display already is too narrow to provide a true smartphone experience, so the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold took a step backwards in this regard.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 review

The Chinese OEM also took a different approach to high refresh rate panels. While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a 60Hz cover display and a 120Hz foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel, Xiaomi has done the opposite and fitted the Mi Mix Fold with a 90Hz cover display and a 60Hz foldable AMOLED.

Internal specs

As you would expect, Xiaomi took advantage of the fact that the Mi Mix Fold was unveiled more than six months after the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Newer components have been developed since, and as a result, the Xiaomi foldable comes with a few upgraded components including the Snapdragon 888 chipset and more memory options.

Samsung’s rival is equipped with a double-cell battery that has a combined capacity of 5,020mAh. It can be recharged roughly two and a half times faster thanks to its 67W super fast charging capabilities.

Cameras

Xiaomi’s triple camera setup consists of a 108MP main sensor (vs. 12MP), an 8MP telephoto/macro shooter with a liquid lens and 3x optical zoom (vs. 12MP with OIS and 2x optical zoom), and a 13MP ultra-wide (vs. 12MP ultra-wide). It’s capable of 8K video recording, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 2 isn’t.

The cameras on the back of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 are getting left behind, and that’s especially true considering the fact that Samsung’s foldable has a 2x zoom camera from 2017. Needless to say, Xiaomi’s solution further highlights the fact that the Z Fold series is in need of a camera upgrade.

Other interesting tidbits

Like the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold claims to redefine mobile multitasking and productivity. Oddly enough, it runs an older version of Android (10) and MIUI 12, whereas Samsung’s solution got updated to Android 11.

One UI’s multitasking capabilities on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 are limited to a maximum of three apps in split screen, whereas Xiaomi’s MIUI 12 takes a different approach by employing a desktop / tablet like UI. It looks like it might be a better fit for mobile productivity, at least judging by the marketing material.

On the other hand, Xiaomi’s foldable doesn’t seem to have a DeX-like environment that would allow it to connect to a bigger screen, so the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a better choice if you’re looking to bring the mobile experience to a TV or a computer monitor.

There are a couple of other things that the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold does differently. It doesn’t have a display notch or cutout for the foldable panel, and it has quad speakers instead of two, which might make for a better multimedia experience.

Can Samsung learn something from the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold?

Samsung is expected to upgrade a few key features with the release of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 later this year. It should boast an improved camera system, better internal hardware, and it might even support the S Pen. It will likely become the best foldable of the year, especially if the Mi Mix Fold represents the best Xiaomi has to offer.

Even so, Samsung could learn something from the Mi Mix Fold even if Xiaomi’s foldable phone has no chance of becoming a global phenomenon. One very attractive thing about the Mi Mix Fold is that it will go for sale in China for the rough equivalent of $1,500, making it $500 cheaper at launch than Samsung’s solution.

The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 3 would also benefit from a quad-speaker setup, and perhaps MIUI 12 will inspire Samsung to create a more comprehensive UI for mobile productivity and multitasking. The foldable panel looks better without a cutout, so here’s hoping that in-display cameras will become a reality later this year.

At the end of the day, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 remains the most complete foldable phone to date, but it’s becoming obvious that Samsung should not ignore its emerging rivals. It looks like the foldable clone wars have begun and Samsung has to make sure that it remains one step ahead of its competition.

The Galaxy A51 gets another discount as US customers wait for its sequel

The Galaxy A52 might be the most exciting mid-range phone of the year but it is not yet available for purchase everywhere. It’s missing from store shelves in the USA, but the next-best thing — the Galaxy A51 — is now available at a discount of 13%.

Amazon is selling the factory unlocked Galaxy A51 with 128GB of storage in the USA for $349, down $50 from the usual $399 price. The offer is only available for the Galaxy A51 in black and it doesn’t apply to the 5G model.

The 4G-enabled Galaxy A51 is equipped with an Exynos 9611 chipset and a 4,000mAh battery with 15W charging. It has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate, and quad-camera setup coupled with a 32MP selfie sensor capable of 4K video recording. The phone shipped with Android 10 but it is now being updated to Android 11-based One UI 3.1 in some regions.

The Galaxy A51 was Samsung’s most successful smartphone of 2020. If you’re reading this, there’s a high probability that you already own a Galaxy A51, but if you don’t and would like to change that, this might be a good opportunity to do so. Especially if you can no longer afford waiting for the Galaxy A52 to hit the shelves in the USA.

Samsung SDI was the third-largest smartphone battery maker in 2020

Samsung SDI was among the top 3 smartphone battery manufacturers in 2020. Global revenue from all manufacturers combined reached a total of $7.5 billion last year, and Samsung was able to capture 15% of the market.

The segment was led by Amperex Technology (ATL) with a market share of 42%. LG Chem was the second-largest smartphone battery manufacturer with a 26% share, and the remaining 17% market share was covered by other, smaller manufacturers.

According to a recent Strategy Analytics report, the smartphone battery cell market was driven by seasonal smartphone launches in the second half of the year, especially as smartphone manufacturers began adopting high-density and dual-cell batteries at a higher rate. This, however, appears to have benefitted ATL the most.

The 5G era is expected to boost the smartphone battery market

2021 is considered the year of 5G, as more smartphone manufacturers — including Samsung — will continue offering an increasingly-wide range of 5G-capable handsets at different price points.

And since 5G puts a greater strain on smartphone batteries, market watchers expect demand for high-density cells to rise even further throughout 2021.

Samsung SDI’s ambitions go beyond the smartphone market though. The company is now eyeing the EV (electric vehicle) market and it reportedly wants to build new EV battery production lines in Hungary by making a ~$1 billion investment.

First Samsung Quantum Dot TV prototype coming this spring

The first-ever Quantum Dot TV prototype from Samsung Display will be delivered to Samsung Electronics in late spring, according to a new report from the Far East. Dubbed QD-OLED, the technology has yet to be implemented into a consumer-level device. That state of affairs does not necessarily stem from any technical limitations, either.

Instead, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display have reportedly been at odds regarding the future of television sets for some time now. And it wasn’t until recently that the former was willing to even entertain the idea of committing to QD-OLED panels. The other alternative would be to pursue the so-called QNED solutions, short for “quantum nano-emitting diodes/nanorods”.

Quantum-what now?

Assuming a lesson in supramolecular chemistry is not what you’re here for, what you need to know is that Samsung Electronics is scheduled to receive the final QD-OLED prototype for technical testing and market evaluation this June, as South Korean sources now claim.

Despite the logistical nightmare that 2020 turned out to be, the timeline for the potential release of Samsung’s first QD-OLED TVs perfectly matches the initial industry watcher projections from last year. This does not mean we’ll necessarily see consumer-grade QD-OLED smart TVs from Samsung in Q3 2021, but it certainly makes it more likely.

Samsung Display, for its part, is currently focused on perfecting its manufacturing processes and bolstering the still-meager yields. The capacity of its flagship Q1 factory line –located in Asan, South Korea– presently hovers around 30,000 panels per month. In the meantime, LCD production continues, a full decade from the height of its plasma wars.

Samsung vows to make Exynos processors based on ARM’s new architecture

Samsung makes Exynos processors based on ARM’s microarchitecture. The latest Exynos chipsets such as the Exynos 1080 and the Exynos 2100 use the ARMv8.2-A design. Yesterday, ARM unveiled its brand new ARMv9 architecture, and Samsung announced that it will release Exynos chips based on ARM’s new design in the future.

ARM’s brand new architecture comes almost a decade after the launch of ARMv8 in October 2011. ARMv8 brought support for 64-bit CPUs with the AArch64 instruction set. With ARMv9, the British semiconductor design firm aims to bring improved performance along with better security. The company says that its new design features enhanced vector processing, much better machine learning performance, improved security, digital signal processing, and full backward compatibility with ARMv8.

ARM v9 Architecture Features

With ARMv9, smaller machine learning workloads can be processed directly on the CPU rather than relying on dedicated accelerators. It also introduces Confidential Compute Architecture (CCA) for a more dynamic security system. CCA creates ‘realms’ that are secure and containerized execution environments that are opaque to the operating system.

ARM claims that its new design brings an IPC (instructions per cycle) improvement of 30% over ARMv8, but AnandTech expects it to be around 14% better than current-generation CPUs such as the Cortex-A78 and Cortex-X1 (used in the Exynos 2100). ARM also revealed that its next-generation Mali GPUs will bring real-time ray-tracing and variable rate shading for improved graphics performance.

We can expect ARMv9-based processors from Apple, Samsung, Qualcomm, and MediaTek to hit the market sometime in 2022. So, it is possible that the Galaxy S22 will use a high-end Exynos processor with ARMv9-based CPU cores and AMD Radeon Mobile GPU. Samsung took a giant leap with the Exynos 2100, solving battery life and performance throttling issues, and the next-gen Exynos processor could be even better.

ARM v9 Confidential Compute Architecture

Min Goo Kim, executive vice president of SoC development at Samsung Electronics, said, “Arm’s next-generation Armv9 architecture offers a substantial improvement in security and machine learning, the two areas that will be further emphasized in tomorrow’s mobile communications devices. As we work together with Arm, we expect to see the new architecture usher in a wider range of innovations to the next generation of Samsung’s Exynos mobile processors.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G product ecosystem gets a 30% discount

Samsung has launched an exciting new deal in the USA involving the entire Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G ecosystem. Prospective buyers now have an opportunity to purchase the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G along with a 45mm Galaxy Watch 3 Bluetooth, a pair of Galaxy Buds Pro, a Wireless Charger Trio, and a Clear Protective case for the flagship phone, all for just $1,400.

The latest deal shaves more than $500 off the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G bundle’s price, and it goes hand in hand with an additional $100 promotional discount for total savings of over $600. And along with the products mentioned above, customers will also receive 4 months of YouTube Premium for free (valued at $47.96).

Be careful when choosing the color of your Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G

The discount applies to the 128GB Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G in Phantom Silver and Phantom Black, however, the latter color option represents a better deal because it’s bundled with more products. As of this writing, the Wireless Charger Trio in white — which is supposed to accompany the Phantom Silver bundle — is out of stock, therefore it’s been removed from the bundle.

There’s no guarantee that the new discount will last long, seeing how some products can go out of stock at any moment. If you’re in the market for a new Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and accessories, make sure you refer to the links below before it’s too late.

April 2021 Android security update joins the Galaxy Fold

The April 2021 Android security update is being inducted into the Galaxy Fold as of yesterday. Samsung’s latest patch for its seminal flexible-display device was first sighted in France, identified by version number F900FXXU4EUCF. Based on the said package name, some additional performance improvements, bug fixes, or both are part of the latest OTA download, as well.

Samsung has yet to share a detailed changelog accompanying this release, but expect an update on that front by next week. As for when to expect the update, itself, these releases are typically done in a gradual manner. The wait for the April 2021 security update to reach the Galaxy Fold probably won’t be too long, based on how swiftly past monthly patches arrived to Samsung’s first-ever foldable smartphone.

How much longer will the Galaxy Fold be supported?

The Galaxy Fold just turned two last month, but it’s nowhere near its anticipated EOL. For starters, it was included in Samsung’s 2020 promise to bring at least three generations of major OS upgrades to its modern devices. Meaning we still have at least Android 12-based One UI to look forward to, followed by at least another year’s worth of monthly security patches.

Only afterward is Samsung expected to start winding down Galaxy Fold support. The process is meant to happen gradually, with the transition period consisting of quarterly updates instead of monthly releases. In conclusion, we’re currently halfway into the Galaxy Fold’s lifecycle, at worst.

As for the April 2021 security patch, you can download full system images containing the update from our firmware section. Or just wait for the software upgrade notification to reach you naturally, which should happen any time now.

Samsung starts rolling out One UI 3.1 update to Galaxy M21

Samsung has been nothing short of awesome over the past few months in terms of software updates. The company has already rolled out the Android 11 update to dozens of smartphones and tablets. Now, it is releasing the One UI 3.1 update to various Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy M21.

The One UI 3.1 (Core) update is now rolling out to the Galaxy M21 in India. The latest software update, which has firmware version M215FXXU2BUC8, has a download size of around 960MB and we recommend using a Wi-Fi network to download it. Apart from One UI 3.1, the new update also brings the March 2021 security patch to the Galaxy M21. The update should bring improved stock apps, slightly refreshed UI, and the ability to remove GPS location data from images. Samsung mentions that the update also improves the camera, overall performance, and stability of the Galaxy M21.

If you are a Galaxy M21 user in India, you might have received a notification for the update. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can check for it manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install on the smartphone. Alternatively, you can download the firmware from our firmware section and flash it manually. We expect the new software update to roll out to the Galaxy M21 in other markets over the next few days.

The Galaxy M21 was launched one year ago with Android 10 on board. A few months later, it received the One UI 2.1 update and then the One UI 2.5 update. Earlier this year, it received the Android 11-based One UI 3.0 (Core) update.

April 2021 security update rollout reaches Galaxy Tab S6

The April 2021 security update started rolling out to Samsung devices over the last 24 hours, with the Galaxy Tab S6 being the latest to join the fold. The newest over-the-air package targeting the 2019 slate has been designated as the release version T865XXU4CUC1. Its staged deployment began yesterday in Germany and more countries are expected to follow shortly.

While only the SIM-enabled version of the Galaxy Tab S6 (SM-T865) has started making the jump to a new security patch level so far, the Wi-Fi model (SM-T860) shouldn’t be far behind. Monthly firmware upgrades for Samsung’s Android devices tend to be deployed gradually so as to minimize their impact on network performance.

What’s new in this release?

With that in mind, the deliberate fashion wherein the April 2021 security patch started rolling out to the Galaxy Tab S6 might indicate that this particular device remains relatively popular, i.e., a common sight among consumers. What’s certain is that Samsung keeps it updated in a orderly fashion; despite releasing less than 18 months ago, the Galaxy Tab S6 already received two major operating system upgrades and is running Android 11 nowadays. It was also encompassed in Samsung’s promise of three generations’ worth of operating system upgrades, so there’s more where that came from.

Today’s release also appears to contain some additional performance and stability improvements on top of the security patches. To check whether your Galaxy Tab S6 can already install the April 2021 security patch, navigate to the system Settings app, scroll down to the bottom where you’ll see a Software update submenu, and try initializing the Download and install option on the following screen. Our firmware archives already have some full system images containing the new update up for download, as well.

Samsung TV Plus offers access to ad-supported video content, including documentaries, movies, music videos, news, sports, TV shows, and more. The company said that it launched Samsung TV Plus in India following a change in consumer behavior since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Samsung TV Plus will be available in India on all smart TVs from the company released since 2017. The video streaming service currently features 27 global and local channels, and the company said that it will add more channels soon. April 2021 security patch is now rolling out to Galaxy S10 series

Samsung started rolling out the April 2021 security patch to the Galaxy S21 series just two days ago. Now, the latest security patch from the company has reached the Galaxy S10 series, at least in a few markets. That’s quite impressive from Samsung in terms of software updates for older smartphones, especially considering that April 2021 isn’t even here yet.

A new software update, which bears firmware version G97xxXXU9FUCD, is now rolling out to the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10+ in Switzerland and the Netherlands. Apart from the April 2021 security patch, we can also expect the update to bring non-critical bug fixes and stability improvements to the smartphones. We don’t have the official changelog for this update yet, and if we find any new feature after installing the latest firmware, we will update the article.

We expect this update to roll out to Galaxy S10 series smartphones in other markets over the next few days. If you are a Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or Galaxy S10+ user in any of the countries mentioned above, you can manually check for the update on your phone by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install.

The Galaxy S10 series received the One UI 3.1 update last month. Samsung has already released the April 2021 security patch to the Galaxy S21, Galaxy Note 10, Galaxy Z Fold 2, Galaxy A51, Galaxy A52, and the Galaxy S20 FE. We expect the latest security patch to be released for more Galaxy smartphones and tablets over the next few weeks.

Galaxy S20 FE 5G with Snapdragon 865 processor launched in India

Almost six months after launching the Galaxy S20 FE (4G) in India, Samsung has finally launched its 5G variant in the country. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G with the Snapdragon 865 processor is now available in India, which is a slap in the face of anyone who spent money to buy the Galaxy S20 FE in India last year, given its poor Exynos 990 processor.

The Galaxy S20 FE 5G is priced at INR 47,999 (around $650) in India, after an instant cashback of INR 8,000. The phone is available in three colors—Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, and Cloud Navy—but just one memory configuration: 8GB RAM + 128GB storage. It can be purchased starting today from Amazon.in, Samsung.com, Samsung Exclusive Stores, and authorized retailers across the country.

Samsung also appears to have dropped the price of the Galaxy S20 FE 4G, at least on Amazon.in, where the phone is being sold for just INR 36,574 (around $499). However, that price is only applicable when it is not clubbed with an exchange offer or no-cost EMI scheme. The company has also listed the 256GB variant of the Galaxy S20 FE 4G on its website, but it is not available for purchase right now.

Yes, Galaxy S20 FE 4G with Snapdragon 865 processor is coming soon

As if Samsung’s smartphone lineup is not confusing enough, the company is making another variant of the Galaxy S20 FE. This new variant first appeared earlier this month with model number SM-G780G. A few days later, we confirmed that it is an LTE variant of the Galaxy S20 FE with the Snapdragon 865 processor.

The Galaxy S20 FE 4G (SM-G780G) has now appeared in Geekbench’s database. The new listing reveals that the phone uses the Snapdragon 865 processor (codename ‘kona’) with the Adreno 650 GPU. It features 6GB of RAM and runs Android 11 out of the box (probably with One UI 3.1). The phone scored 893 points in the single-core CPU test and 3,094 points in the multi-core CPU test. Samsung has also published support webpages for this variant of the Galaxy S20 FE on its website for Malaysia, the Caribbean, the Philippines, and the UK. All those support webpages mention the model number SM-G780G/DS, which means that the phone features a dual-SIM card slot.

Galaxy S20 FE 4G (Snapdragon 865) specs

As per the information we have, except for the processor, this new variant of the Galaxy S20 FE is exactly similar to the Exynos 990 variant. It features a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with Full HD+ resolution, HDR10+, and a 120Hz refresh rate. It has 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB/256GB storage, and a microSD card slot. The phone has a 32MP selfie camera and a 12MP+12MP+8MP triple-camera setup on the rear with 4K 60fps video recording.

The phone also features an in-display fingerprint reader, stereo speakers, IP68 rating, full Samsung Pay, and a USB 3.2 Type-C port. It uses a 4,500mAh battery and supports 25W fast charging, wireless charging, and reverse wireless charging.

Samsung could entirely ditch Tizen in favor of Wear OS for Galaxy Watch 4

Samsung’s Tizen is the second-best operating system for smartwatches right now. However, the South Korean firm appears to be planning to ditch Tizen in favor of Google’s Wear OS, at least according to the latest rumors. The rumors first appeared back in 2018 when the company replaced Gear branding with Galaxy for its smartwatches. Now, another report seems to confirm Samsung’s shift from Tizen to Wear OS for its next-generation smartwatches.

An APK teardown of the latest version of the Galaxy Wearable app by Android Police’s Max Weinbach reveals two codenames: Fresh and Wise. These codenames are connected to Samsung’s next-generation smartwatches, the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch Active 4. They will reportedly come in two sizes—40/41mm and 44/45mm—and two variants: Bluetooth and cellular.

A new plugin with the codename ‘water’ was also found in the APK file, and it is reportedly Samsung’s compatibility layer for Wear OS. A reference to ‘newos’ was also found in the Galaxy Wearable application file. All of this points towards Samsung preparing to launch the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch Active 4 smartwatches running Google’s Wear OS. The upcoming watches are expected to be launched sometime in Q2 2021.

We are not entirely sure as to why Samsung would switch from Tizen to Wear OS even though the former is generally a more polished platform. Perhaps, this switch is a part of Samsung’s deepening partnership with Google and due to the lack of enough third-party apps and services for Tizen. Samsung is quite optimistic about the wearable market, especially after its growth last year, so it could be willing to ditch Tizen for even better growth.

Earlier, it was also found that Samsung is also working on the Galaxy Buds 2, which could replace the original Galaxy Buds and the Galaxy Buds+ later this year.

Another update has landed on the Galaxy S20 FE to improve security

Samsung’s April 2021 security patch rollout continues and the Galaxy S20 FE is one of the latest devices to join the recent firmware update party alongside the Galaxy A52, the Galaxy S21, and a couple of other Galaxy phones.

The Galaxy S20 FE is now receiving the April 2021 security patch through a new firmware update that’s rolling out in countless countries across Europe. There are too many to count here, but you can refer to our firmware archive for a complete list.

The update seems to be limited to the 4G variant of the Galaxy S20 FE and it can be identified by firmware version G780FXXS2CUC8. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G will probably receive a similar update very soon.

If you happen to own the Galaxy S20 FE in one of the many European countries in which the firmware update is now rolling out, you should receive an update notification at any moment. Otherwise, you can try triggering the update via the Settings app by navigating to Software update and tapping Download and install.

As usual, SamMobile readers can circumvent the OTA release and download the latest firmware for the Galaxy S20 FE (SM-G780F) from our archive. The firmware can then be installed on the phone using a Windows PC without having to wait for the update to reach your device over-the-air.

The Galaxy A52 is already getting the latest security update

Not a lot of time has passed since the Galaxy A52 was officially introduced to the world as a killer mid-range device with flagship characteristics, and it didn’t take long for Samsung to improve the phone’s security with a fresh firmware update. The April 2021 security patch is now rolling out to the 4G variant of the Galaxy A52 (SM-A525F) in a handful of countries across the European continent.

Galaxy A52 owners can identify the update by firmware version A525FXXU1AUC5. The firmware is now being rolled out in Austria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. The April 2021 security patch was recently released for the Galaxy S21, the Galaxy Note 10, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and even the Galaxy A52’s predecessor — the Galaxy A51 — along with the One UI 3.1 update. Samsung has yet to detail the latest security patch so nobody really knows what vulnerabilities it’s supposed to be fixing, but improved security is always welcomed.

For the time being, the new firmware update appears to be available only for the 4G-enabled Galaxy A52, but we’re guessing that the 5G variant will get the same treatment soon. Galaxy A52 owners in Europe can attempt to download the latest update from the Settings app by accessing the Software update section and tapping Download and install.

As usual, SamMobile readers can also acquire new firmware from our servers for free. If you want to skip the wait, head down to our firmware archive, look for the firmware that matches your phone, and download it on a PC to install it manually using Odin.

Samsung says the Galaxy S7 isn’t a phone so it shouldn’t be taxed as one

Samsung has apparently tried to reclassify the Galaxy S7 as anything but a telephone for cellular networks in South Africa in an attempt to convince the South Africa Revenue Service (SARS) to lower import tariffs and get a tax refund. The company failed in its endeavor because, well, the Galaxy S7 is a phone after all, despite the fact that it takes advantage of smart features.

There is some entertainment value in watching a giant multinational corporation like Samsung arguing over semantics in an attempt to get a tax refund. And with help from IT specialist Jacques Van Wyk, Samsung has reportedly argued that the Galaxy S7 is first and foremost an apparatus which allows for the connection to a wireless communication network for the transmission or reception of speech or other sounds, images or data, but it is not a telephone for cellular networks.

Rather, it’s more of a pocket computer, so it shouldn’t be taxed as a phone, according to Samsung. Which is quite an amusing statement given that the Galaxy S7 doesn’t even support DeX.

Smartphone or pocket computer. Tomayto, tomahto

Mobile phones have evolved over the past decade to a point where they have been colloquially referred to as “pocket computers,” and with that knowledge in mind, Samsung and Jacques Van Wyk concluded that the primary function of the Galaxy S7 was to connect to the internet and offer access to music, games, and social media platforms, rather than to provide cellular connectivity for phone calls.

Evidently, SARS disagreed and argued that the Galaxy S7 is indeed a telephone for cellular networks, and despite the fact that telephones have evolved over the years, they still feature a keyboard — even if it’s software-based — speakers, microphones, as well as a SIM card / eSIM that’s used precisely for communicating with other people over cellular networks.

Professor Ling Cheng said in an affidavit that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is manufactured as a cellular network handset, which is designed to maintain a two-way communication with the base station of a cellular mobile communication system.

Judge Mngqibisa-Thusi concluded that just because the Galaxy S7 has functions which can be found in laptops or desktop computers, this does not detract from its principal function of being a telephone for cellular networks. She also added that Samsung’s attempt to redefine the Galaxy S7 as a laptop / desktop computer was disingenuous, and that the device’s usage through the internet does not change its nature and objective characteristics.

Samsung’s tax refund application was dismissed with costs, though it’s unclear how much money the company had to pay for its attempt.

For some, today’s the last day of Samsung Cloud-OneDrive migration

Samsung Cloud will soon drop support for Gallery Sync, Samsung Cloud Drive, and Premium Storage. Samsung confirmed last year that Cloud customers have until April 2021 to migrate their data to Microsoft OneDrive, and Samsung has now provided more information as to how it’s going about shutting down its Cloud service.

To be clear though, Samsung Cloud isn’t going away entirely. It will only lose sync capabilities with Gallery, My Files, and Premium Storage, but customers will continue to be able to back up / sync and restore data from apps like Contacts, Calendar, and Notes.

Samsung’s strategy includes two groups and three stages

Samsung isn’t shutting down its Cloud service in every country at the same time, but instead, the company has split the market into two groups and three stages. For the first stage, customers in Group 1 will have until March 31 to migrate their data to Microsoft OneDrive, while Group 2 will have until May 31.

During stage 2, customers in Group 1 will continue to be able to download their data to a PC until June 30, while Group 2 has an August 31 deadline.

Once both stages are completed, data will then be deleted from Cloud and users will no longer be able to recover it. The final stage for Group 1 and Group 2 will commence from July 1 and September 1, respectively.

You can refer to Samsung’s dedicated page to verify if you belong in Group 1 or Group 2 by country. And if you are part of the former group then you only have one more day until you won’t be able to migrate your data to Microsoft OneDrive, so you might want to hurry.

How to integrate with Microsoft OneDrive

Samsung Cloud app users can integrate with Microsoft OneDrive and migrate their data by tapping More, accessing Settings, and selecting Link with OneDrive.

Gallery app users can tap the More button, access Settings, and select Cloud Sync or Switch to OneDrive.

Last but not least, My Files app users can go to More, Settings, and select Make the Switch to OneDrive.

This is how the Galaxy S eco packaging has changed over the years

Samsung’s sustainability efforts in recent years have led to a few key changes to the company’s manufacturing processes as well as the retail packaging of its products. And in recent news, Samsung has released a new infographic that tells the eco-conscious journey of the Galaxy S flagship series — or rather its packaging — over the past half a decade.

Samsung became increasingly eco-conscious with every new Galaxy S flagship generation it released over the past five years, so here’s a quick summary of what’s been going on.

Samsung’s Galaxy S eco-journey so far

With the launch of the Galaxy S8 series in 2017, Samsung has removed the magnet from the packaging, it has replaced the plastic accessory tray with one manufactured from paper-based materials, and it has completely removed the plastic case that came with the included earbuds.

The following year — with the launch of the Galaxy S9 series — Samsung maintained all of the previous changes but has also replaced the plastic-built device tray to a different tray made from pulp-mold material.

The packaging for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S20 lineups went through even more drastic changes. The package structure was simplified, the accessory tie material was changed to paper, and protective films were removed from accessories. Furthermore, the accessory trays were integrated to one pulp-mold tray. Interestingly, Samsung also claims that the accessory coating was changed from glossy to matte because the latter solution is more eco-friendly.

Finally, the latest Galaxy S21 series represents another important step in Samsung’s journey towards sustainability, even though it may have come at a cost for consumers. The packaging was made from corrugated carboard to reduce material waste, but more importantly, the company has removed a couple of in-box accessories — the charger and the AKG-branded earbuds – to minimize the amount of packaging necessary.

Samsung’s eco-friendly efforts have led to the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) awarding the company with the Gold Tier Award for recycling of electronic waste, as well as the Champion Award for the Galaxy S10’s eco-packaging. You can refer to the infographic below for more details.
