WatchON Plus brings new WatchON interface to the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3

With the Galaxy S5, Samsung revealed a new step in software design, giving its interface an overhaul and revamping many of its inbuilt apps. One of the apps to receive a new design was WatchON, which is used for controlling televisions and set-top boxes with the inbuilt IR sensor. Today, Samsung is bringing over that new design to the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, through a separate app it is calling WatchON Plus. The new app is available on the Play Store, though apart from the new and attractive interface, you’re getting pretty much the same functionality as before (not a bad thing, given the WatchON app is pretty full-featured as it is.)

Samsung launches the Galaxy Tab Active, a ruggedized tablet for businesses

Water-resistant and rugged mobile devices are all too common in the consumer world, but those qualities haven’t permeated devices in the enterprise market. Samsung is looking to change that with the Galaxy Tab Active, a tablet that comes with IP67 certification for water resistance and an anti-shock covering that can withstand a 1.2-meter drop. The tablet is aimed at those working in enterprise – for example, Samsung is touting the inbuilt NFC connectivity as a great tool for transportation and logistics managers, and the rugged nature of the device as an advantage for retail auto sales representatives.

Like the Galaxy Note tablets, the Galaxy Tab Active comes with a stylus that Samsung is calling the C-Pen, something the company thinks those who have to wear gloves in their field of work can use as an alternative to standard touch input. The display on the tablet is an 8-inch unit of WXGA (1280×800) pixels resolution, and apart from the solid build, the Galaxy Tab Active sports mostly mid-range specs, like a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, a 3.1-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot, a 4,450 mAh battery touted for 8-10 hours of general usage, and Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Galaxy Tab Active will be available in both Wi-Fi and LTE variants sometime later this year, and will come with the C-Pen and a Protective Cover right in the box. Samsung is only offering the Titanium Green color option; pricing hasn’t been revealed, but we’re guessing it will cost around the same as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 4 range of mid-range tablets.

Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 highlights

One of the most anticipated Samsung events was held yesterday in Berlin. The Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 brought many new products including but not limited to the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. The folks at Samsung Tomorrow have compiled all of the highlights from yesterday’s event.

The main highlight of this event was undoubtedly the Note 4. It carries forward the design language of the Galaxy Note 3 with a premium metal frame, a soft textured back cover and 2.5D Glass for more durability.

The Galaxy Note Edge came as a bit of a surprise. It has a unique curved Edge screen which provides quick access to apps and functions used frequently, the screen can be activated separately.

On the wearable front Samsung showed off the Gear S and Gear Circle. The former has a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display with 3G, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity features. Users can maximize the health experience with the Gear Circle.

Last but not the least, Samsung’s Gear VR headset was unveiled. With an ultra-wide field of view and super low latency head tracking, it brings a 360 degree viewing experience.

Samsung Gear SDK adds support for the newly launched Gear S

Samsung launched the Gear S, its fourth smartwatch in a year, at the Galaxy Note 4 UNPACKED event yesterday, and today, the company has released a new version of the Gear SDK for developers with support for the new smartwatch. The Gear S won’t go on sale for a few more weeks, but early access to the SDK should help developers get their apps ready in time for the watch’s market release. As any sensible person would tell you, Samsung’s plethora of smartwatches have little future without a good developer community to back it up, and the launch of the SDK should help Samsung see its app store for wearables grow beyond the 1,000 or so apps that it currently offers to users.

Samsung SM-A500 shows up on GFXBench

One of Samsung’s upcoming A series phones, the SM-A500, is making yet another appearance in the wild, this time through a listing on the GFXBench benchmark database. The benchmark listing has revealed most of the specs of the device, which fit nicely in the mid-range. The hardware includes a 4.8-inch HD display, a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 4.7-megapixel front camera (this will likely be a 3.7-megapixel unit like the Galaxy Note 4′s), 8GB of storage, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Some of the specs are similar to those of the Galaxy Alpha, and the SM-A500′s design will be similar as well, which means it will have some metal in its construction. With the high amount of leaks about the device in recent days, it shouldn’t be long before Samsung makes an official announcement, though it will likely be a few weeks after initial excitement about the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Alpha has died down.

Software talent reportedly being shifted from Android to Tizen

Samsung has already devoted a lot of time and resources to Tizen, however the nascent operating system still has a long way to go before it can become standard on Samsung’s mobile devices and replace Android. The company has already released several devices powered by Tizen, including but not limited to a smartphone, smartwatches, smart cameras and even a TV.

Rumor has it that Samsung Electronics has begun moving software resources that were previously working with Android OS for Galaxy devices over to Tizen. Apparently the move is quite a bit one and may even have resulted in more than 1000 people begin moved over from Android to Tizen. Samsung reportedly has a 5,000 strong team of developers that’s tasked with further developing and improving its operating system.

No confirmation has come in from Samsung regarding this move so it would be best to take it with a grain of salt.
