Oculus confirms ‘VR Quest’ game for Samsung Gear VR

The Facebook-owned virtual reality company Oculus has confirmed that its going to make a new game for the Samsung Gear VR, a virtual reality headset that Samsung built in collaboration with Oculus. The company says that the game will be released with the working title “VR Quest” after Samsung’s virtual reality headset hits the market.

There’s no confirmed release date as yet for the Samsung Gear VR. When the company unveiled it back at IFA 2014 it said that the device will ship later this fall for $199. It also requires a Galaxy Note 4 to function so users would be required to purchase a unit of Samsung’s latest flagship as well.

Oculus made the announcement for “VR Quest” during its first Oculus Connect developer conference. The game is going to be a third-person dungeon crawler which Oculus CTO John Carmack described as “Zelda-esque.” No additional details about the game were revealed at this point in time and neither was the expected release date revealed.

We’ll have to wait until the Gear VR hits the market to find out these details.

The all new My KNOX app makes mixing business and pleasure even easier

Approximately two months ago, Samsung was making news with its KNOX security software. Specifically, Samsung announced that certain components of KNOX would be incorporated directly into the upcoming Android L release. The Korean company emphasized that it would continue to develop the software, and has now released the My KNOX app targeted at individuals who use their personal phones as their work phones. KNOX Premium and KNOX Express – additional mobile security software products aimed at IT managers – were also refreshed and promoted.

An additional feature worth highlighting is a remote lock and wipe option for the unfortunate event in which you’ve lost your smartphone. Now, the My KNOX app is currently only compatible with the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4, but we’d have to imagine that future updates will change that. Samsung shows off Gear VR content

The virtual reality headset that Samsung unveiled at IFA 2014 will soon be out in the market. You might think that its only good for an immersive gaming experience but Samsung will also use Gear VR for delivering media and other content.

The company is giving potential customers a glimpse of what the Gear VR is capable of. A new video shows what the user interface looks like and how it would feel to watch video on the Gear VR. The gaming experience has also been outlined. Overall experience is quite immersive courtesy of head tracking by the Gear VR.

Samsung Galaxy VR costs $200 and will be available next month. For now its only compatible with the Galaxy Note 4 so you will need to pick up Samsung’s new phablet as well before you can take advantage of everything that this virtual reality headset has to offer.

Samsung working on in-house GPU for its Exynos mobile CPUs

Back before the Galaxy S5 was launched and rumors were swirling around its hardware, we heard rumblings of Samsung working on a GPU of its own for use in its Exynos chips. Today, that rumor has resurfaced – according to reports, Samsung has continued work on the GPU and managed to hire engineers from Nvidia, AMD, Intel and other companies, most of which are well-known in making GPUs for personal computers. Development has apparently been going on for a few years; it’s not surprising that Samsung is working on developing a GPU, as using an in-house mobile GPU would free the company from having to license mobile GPUs from other chip makers (Samsung currently uses ARM’s Mali series of mobile graphics.)

An in-house chip would also allow Samsung to make its Exynos chips more and more a fully home-grown project, though given the long time it takes to design chips from the ground up, it could be a while before we see the Korean manufacturer announce an Exynos chip with its own GPU. Given the fact that Samsung is moving more and more towards using its Exynos processors instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip in many countries (thanks to the inclusion of on-board LTE on the latest Exynos variants), the company will likely take its time in making sure its first mobile GPU gets everything right and is capable of going head to head with the well-established competition.

Clove says the UK won’t be part of initial Galaxy Note Edge launch, confirms Galaxy Note 4 pricing

Recently, an analyst suggested that Samsung will only be able to ship around 1 million units of the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014 thanks to the fact that the curved Edge display of the device has a complicated manufacturing process. Now, UK retailer Clove has also come up with a statement saying that when the Galaxy Note Edge launches, there will be no stock available in UK. Samsung hasn’t yet confirmed anything, but distribution channels have reportedly told Clove that the UK won’t be among the countries the Note Edge will initially launch in, and that most European countries won’t be getting it.

This doesn’t come as surprising, considering information SamMobile received recently also suggested that the UK won’t be part of the initial launch. However, Clove has said that for those looking to buy the Galaxy Note Edge, it will try to source non-UK stock, though again, given the limited regions the device will be launching in, it remains to be seen just how easy it will be for consumers to get hold of one. Pricing isn’t confirmed either, but you can be sure the Galaxy Note Edge won’t be too affordable given its unique selling point.

Thankfully, the Galaxy Note 4 won’t be so elusive, as Clove says that the first stock due to arrive in the week starting October 13. The fourth-generation Note flagship will be priced at £575, and people will likely be able to buy it for less on monthly plans.
