Galaxy S6 dual-SIM headed to China, photos leak

The Galaxy S6 is now available for pre-order in the US on national carriers Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile (sorry Verizon customers; you’ll have to wait until April 1st). As for US customers who want to get their hands-on time with the devices, Best Buy’s got you covered.


With all the GS6 and S6 edge rage in the US, however, Samsung’s still prepping its devices for the remaining worldwide markets. New information out of China confirms that the Chinese market will have its own dual-SIM Galaxy S6 variant, in addition to Russia and the Philippines. China is reported to be on the verge of an official Galaxy S6 announcement in the country on March 31st.


The Chinese site in question shows the dual-SIM card slot in a clear photo, while mentioning that the dual-SIM Chinese Galaxy S6 will bear the model number “SM-G9200” as confirmed by carrier Netcom. The dual-SIM GS6 will feature pre-loaded apps such as Baidu, Paypal Wallet, FlipBoard, Taobao, WhatsApp, and others. Android 5.0.2 Lollipop will come along for the ride. Netcom has said that it will carry the dual-SIM Galaxy S6 model, and this matches the dual-SIM Chinese certification we reported on earlier this month.


Dual-SIM smartphones are useful for a number of reasons, to get more 3G/4G data without paying extra each month and work/leisure separation, to name a few. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are expected to go on sale worldwide on April 10th.

Galaxy S6 Active could feature microSD card slot

There’s no denying that the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have put Samsung back in the limelight again, with many former critics pronouncing the Android OEM’s success in the smartphone market once more. At the same time, however, there are some long-time Samsung faithful who are disappointed with the new devices: both sacrifice cherished features for a sexy body and frame in an effort to appease hardware-hungry consumers and tech enthusiasts.


We’ve gotten our hands on some new evidence that seems to indicate Samsung still cares about its old-school customers who’ve never abandoned the company (even in its “plastic is fantastic” days). Reddit member garshol met with a Samsung representative earlier this week to find out about what to expect from the Galaxy S6 Active. Garshol states he was told by the rep that the Galaxy S6 Active will feature specs that are “similar to the S6” but “no fingerprint reader and pulse reader.” As for the differences, we could see a “less good camera, may come with OIS,” “buttons on the front,” and, surprisingly, an “SD card reader.”

2015 Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 leaked, features iris recognition at a glance

Each new year brings leaks of new-generation products whose predecessors we’ve seen the year before. Today’s leak comes by way of Menlo, California-based Stanford Research Institute (SRI), and the product in question is the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4.


Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 at MWC 2014 last year, but has provided nothing in the way of words or photos to suggest a new generation of the Tab Pro 8.4 is on its way. MWC 2015 has now come and gone, but it appears as though we shouldn’t discount the idea of a second Tab Pro 8.4 altogether.


SRI hinted at the second-generation Tab Pro 8.4 earlier today when discussing a new feature the Tab Pro 8.4 2015 edition will bring to the market:


Additionally SRI has entered into a supply agreement to start production and sales of the IOM technology-embedded Samsung mobile products for B2B applications. The initial product for this supply agreement will be a customized Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 tablet with a built-in IOM iris module.


For those who may not know, “IOM” here refers to “Iris on the Move,” a name given to iris recognition that retrieves your eye scan with just a glance. Old iris recognition technology requires you to remain still to obtain a proper eye scan, but the new IOM technology will retrieve your eye scan without the need for complete stillness. IOM is currently being used at airports, work stations, access control stations, and can work in both indoor and outdoor environments.


SRI goes on to refer to the Tab Pro 8.4 in question as “this new model” and says that the new tablet “will be introduced in the SIA New Product Showcase at ISC West 2015,” which happens to be April 15-17, 2015 (a few weeks away).


With the unveiling of IOM in this new Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, it shouldn’t be long now before Samsung announces the second-generation tablet. Iris on the Move (IOM) technology has only been heralded for enterprise devices, but Samsung has considered the possibility of implementing an iris scanner into the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4. Whether or not an iris scanner will appear this year in the Note 5 is still up for grabs.

Samsung announces Galaxy Tab Active for Australia

Samsung Australia said that the ruggedized Galaxy Tab Active would launch at the end of 2014, after unveiling it during the IFA conference last September. While no such launch arrived, Australian users can now look forward to seeing Samsung’s first water-resistant tablet in their home country.


Today, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Tab Active for Australian consumers. The device features an 8-inch, thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) with an HD resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, similar in its display resolution to the Galaxy Tab 4 and bearing a display that can be found on the Galaxy S4 Active, the first Galaxy smartphone to feature water and dust resistance before the arrival of the Galaxy S5 in 2014.


The Galaxy Tab Active features a 1.2Ghz, quad-core processor (which the source believes to be Exynos). The Galaxy Tab Active, already unveiled in other countries worldwide such as the UK and US, feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor.


It’s not uncommon for Samsung to release the same device in two different parts of the world with two different processors; for an example, we need only look to the Gear S smartwatch, which utilizes a Snapdragon 400 processor in the US, for example, but an Exynos 3250 processor in other countries.


The Tab Active also comes with IP67 water and dust resistance, which means that it’s somewhat element-resistant. The Tab Active houses a 4,450mAh battery that Samsung promises will provide 11 hours of battery life, not to mention a “C Pen” that, yes, provides a somewhat “Note Tab”-like experience to the device. A 1.2MP front camera and 3.1MP back camera won’t provide the best photography experience, but Samsung says that its autofocus is good for barcode scanning.


Last but never least, Samsung’s own Knox 2.0 with Android 4.4.4 KitKat will provide the enterprise security that many desire in a world where corporations continue to push “BYOD” (bring your own device) programs. Rounding out the Tab Active is the 16GB of memory storage, microSD card slot that expands the memory up to 64GB, and 1.5GB of RAM for some slight multitasking. Samsung Australia has yet to provide AUS pricing for the tablet.

Samsung will reportedly release foldable smartphones by next year

Latest reports out of Korea suggest that Samsung could bring foldable smartphones to the market in 2016. Foldable displays have been an area of interest for Samsung. Back in 2014 it was reported that Samsung had actually shown off its first foldable display behind closed doors at the Consumer Electronics Show. The IHS recently released a report claiming that foldable tablets might hit the market by the end of this year. It remains to be seen though if Samsung can manage to bring this technology to the market before 2016.


The report by Business Korea cites an official from Samsung Display who says “The industry believes that the commercialization of foldable smartphones will be possible in 2016.” This could mean that Samsung Display expects to perfect the manufacturing process for these displays by then. Once yield numbers are good the company can think about using foldable displays in its mobile devices. If these reports are to be believed, it just might capitalize on this technology.
