Galaxy S6 durability test gives the King of Bendgate a new title

We all know about #Bendgate and the iPhone 6 Plus insanity that many Apple fans will deny (no need to argue over it; trust us, they will), but a new durability test provided by SquareTrade shows that the King of Bendgate now has a new title: the King of Torturegate.

While the bendability of the thin and light Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are no surprise (we’ve seen the results already), there’s more to a device than its bendability – although bendability is an important factor in durability. There are other factors, too, such as how much a device slides or doesn’t slide on a surface, drop tests, and water resistance tests, and these factors play a role for many in their decision to buy or walk by a device. Even if these factors do not constitute all of the purchasing decision, they are a part of the decision-making process with consumers who want a high-end, high-quality value buy.

With that said, the Galaxy S6 was found to be the most durable of the five devices tested (Galaxy S6, S6 edge, Galaxy S5, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus), with an overall “4” out of 10 for its breakability score. The Galaxy S5 and iPhone 6 were slightly behind, with a 4.5 score overall. The Galaxy S6 edge came in next, with a “5” breakability score that is expected given the device’s cutting “edge” (pun intended) that makes the outer sliver of the screen susceptible to breaks, drops, and falls. At the bottom of the list lies Apple’s first phablet, the iPhone 6 Plus.

The test results, per SquareTrade, are as follows:

In our drop tests, all three Galaxy phones survived six drops from six feet high without breaking. However, the S5’s removable back did pop off repeatedly, and the iPhone 6 Plus broke apart and stopped working 30 minutes later.

When it came to our slide test, the new glass S6 and S6 edge slid farther than any of our other phones and twice as far as the plastic S5 – as one might expect. Finally, all phones survived 10 minutes under water, even though Samsung has backed away from any waterproof claims on the S6 and the S6 edge. There you have it: when it comes to durability, the Samsung Galaxy S6 is the phone to beat – or dunk – or drop – or bend.

There’s a lesson in this, folks: the iPhone 6 Plus may not be the most bendable high-end smartphone (in general) anymore, but it certainly is still the most bendable high-end phablet when compared to the likes of Samsung’s Note 3 and Note 4. If you want more than a 4.7-inch display (on the iPhone 6), you’re better off with Samsung.

Mobilink Pakistan offers year of free 3G data with Galaxy S6, S6 edge purchase

Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge worldwide on April 10th, but some countries have had to wait a few days past the worldwide launch to see the devices up-close. The Galaxy S6 and s6 edge have now launched in Pakistan, but are being sold exclusively through Mobilink.

Mobilink is so proud to launch the new devices that the company’s got its own promotion going: for those who purchase either of the new devices, Mobilink will throw in 1GB of free data each month for 12 months (1 year). Keep in mind that Mobilink only provides 3G data, but this should be sufficient for those whose data needs aren’t too greedy.

If you’re interested, Mobilink will sell the Galaxy S6 starting at 78,999 Pakistani rupees ($777 USD) and the Galaxy S6 edge starting at Rs. 92,999 ($915 USD).

For Pakistani customers who may not know, the Galaxy S6 features a 5.1-inch, Quad HD display with a 2,560 x 1,440p screen resolution, Samsung’s homegrown octa-core Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB of DDR4 RAM, a 5MP front camera, 16MP back camera, and 32GB of storage with in-built wireless charging. The Galaxy S6 edge features the same but includes the “edge” that can be used for call notifications. Both devices are said to provide about 13-15 hours of battery life with 3-4 hours of on-screen usage, though some users have been able to get as much as 7.5 hours of SOT with the S6 edge.

Galaxy S6 edge sales surpass expectations, grabs half of all Samsung’s new sales

Some have said in the days since the MWC 2015 Galaxy S6/S6 edge announcement (March 1) that Samsung should’ve made the Galaxy S6 edge the flagship and launched the “edge” as the company’s only flagship model. New results posted by Yonhap show that there may be some kernel of truth to the statement.

The Galaxy S6 edge has grabbed 50% of all new Samsung Galaxy S6 sales, with the company’s regular Galaxy S6 grabbing the other half. The normal Galaxy S6 sales are expected, as is the case with the Note 4 Samsung launched last Fall in comparison with the Note Edge. What is surprising, however, is that the Galaxy S6 edge was only expected to grab 20-30% of all S6 sales – not fifty percent.

There is much praise for Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, but the cost of the S6 edge has been considered as a drawback from buying what is, undisputedly, the company’s most innovative Galaxy S model we’ve ever seen. And yet, customers seem to love the “People Edge” that lets you color-code contacts and see your phone display light up when a close friend or relative calls (among other features). What may have been perceived as a huge leap of faith for Samsung is turning into currency – and that’s all the Korean manufacturer could ever hope for. If the tech media is wondering whether or not the Galaxy S6/S6 edge can turn around sales, the answer is clear.

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 is overtaking Apple Watch interest

Samsung reacted to the Apple Watch in professional fashion when the device became available for pre-order on the same day that its own Galaxy S6 and S6 edge arrived in retail stores worldwide. The latest study shows that Samsung’s calm demeanor may indeed be justified.

A new study reported by Bloomberg shows that the Galaxy S6 wasn’t enough to stand strong against the Apple Watch prior to the March 2015 announcement. Google’s search engine comparison between the Apple Watch and the Galaxy S6 shows each device gaining ground in term searches as its arrival drew near, then tapering off somewhat from the pre-arrival building hype. Of course, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 didn’t inspire confidence in a number of consumers.

What is a surprise, however, is that the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S6 is now posing problems for the Apple Watch hype. Google’s search engine results show that now, more searches are being done for the S6 – with Apple Watch searches taking a backseat to Samsung’s latest devices. If we’re honest, the Apple Watch doesn’t take consumers places that Samsung’s 2013 Galaxy Gear hasn’t already taken them. The Gear S advances Samsung’s innovations and puts the company at the top of the smartwatch market.

What is clear from the search engine results, if nothing else, is that the hype about the Apple Watch is just that – hype. According to a number of Android consumers, the hype surrounding the iPhone 6 was just another round of smoke, too. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are the best smartphones we’ve seen from any top smartphone manufacturer in a long time and deserve the hype they’re accruing at the moment. Despite their innovations, however, we all know that the Galaxy Note 5 will have to come this Fall just to overturn the misplaced hype of the iPhone 6s. Apple hype is unstoppable: even when it dies down, it magically self-resurrects.

Samsung preps second-generation Z2 smartphone as well as global Tizen mid-ranger for 1H 2015

Tech site Tizen Experts has told us before that Samsung would launch a Tizen Z2 sometime soon, and the site is now confirming the same thing again. A new article published shows the Z2 specs confirmed as having 1GB of random access memory (RAM), a 32-bit, quad-core processor (in contrast to the 64-bit, octa-core Exynos 7420 processor the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge), Tizen 3.0, which bears similarities to Samsung’s own SUHD TV user interface (UI), a plane line switching (PLS) thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) with a 960 x 540p screen resolution (quarter HD, as opposed to Quad HD on the Galaxy S6/edge), along with a 2,000mAh battery.

In contrast to these rumored Z2 specs, the Samsung Z1 had a 4-inch, PLS TFT display (same display type as the rumored Z2) with an 800 x 480p screen resolution (versus the 960 x 540p screen resolution rumored in the Z2), 768MB of RAM (as opposed to the 1GB rumored for the Z2), a dual-core processor (as opposed to the quad-core processor of the Z2), and 1,500mAh battery (as opposed to the 2,000mAh battery of the Z2). As can be seen, the Z2 will improve upon the Z1 in a number of ways. We’ll provide more specs as they come in. Ultra Power Saving Mode will return to the Z2 as it did on the Z1.

What’s more exciting than the Samsung Z2 is that Samsung’s inching ever closer to that high-end Tizen contender – and this new evidence is proof. Tizen Experts says that Samsung is preparing a “global” Tizen smartphone for countries such as the US, UK, India, China, France, Russia, EU, Korea, Malaysia, South Asia, and so on. The new global Tizen smartphone will be more of a mid-range contender, however, with a 4.8-inch HD (1280 x 720p) display, an 8MP camera (which we assume is the back camera), a Tizen Store with global availability (as to be expected for a global Tizen smartphone), and a 2,600mAh battery. These specs seem to create a Galaxy Alpha/Galaxy S3 hybrid, the exception being the Tizen OS inside.

At the same time, these specs are not set in stone until we have more official leaks from Samsung (including pictures and spec sheets). As can be seen, the photo shows a “Full HD AMOLED” (1920 x 1080p) display, despite the claim that the Z2 will have a quarter HD display (960 x 540p). This could just be an error, or it could be a sign that Samsung is still brainstorming how to proceed with the Z2. Both the Z2 and the global Tizen smartphone are expected to arrive in the first half of 2015, although arrival dates and times are always subject to change.

We have no name for the mid-range global Tizen smartphone, but we’re sure excited to see what Samsung’s got in store for the worldwide consumer market. If Samsung’s shown us anything in the last year, it’s that Tizen is not a failed experiment – and that, as the company’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge campaign says, “Next is Now.” If not now, when?

Samsung rolls out Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 4 Duos

Samsung has steadily been releasing the Android 5.0 update for the Galaxy Note 4, so far the update has already been released in most markets around the world. Today though the company is rolling out Lollipop for the Galaxy Note 4 Duos. As the name suggests it’s the dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy Note 4 that’s only available in a couple of markets.

Galaxy Note 4 Duos is actually exclusive to China and Hong Kong, users there can expect to see an update notification on their device today. It’s being rolled out over-the-air and it comes in at just under 1GB. The Android 5.0.1 Lollipop update brings user interface improvements, new features, stability tweaks, bug fixes and more to the Galaxy Note 4 Duos.

Tizen Z1 on sale with Samsung India for 4,990 INR

Samsung’s Z1 has seen some excellent price drops as of late, but Samsung’s India eStore has another price drop for potential Z1 customers in India. The initial price of the Z1 was 5,700 INR (~$91.41), but you can now pick up the Korean manufacturer’s first Tizen smartphone for an even lower price – 4,990 INR ($80), 710 INR ($11-$12) cheaper than the initial price when Samsung announced the Z1. The 4,990 INR price is also tax-inclusive.

For those who are interested, Samsung is offering the Tizen Z1 in three colors: black, white, and red. If you need a slight refresher regarding the specs, the Z1 features a 4-inch display with an 800 x 480 screen resolution, a 1.2Ghz dual-core A7 processor, a 3.1MP front camera, a back camera, 768MB of random access memory (RAM) and 4GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot that provides an additional 64GB of storage (microSD card sold separately).
