Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 edge strikes gold in Malaysia, sells out

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge went on sale in Malaysia on Friday, April 17, 2015, a week later than the standard worldwide launch, but it seems that the country is making headlines with its own “gold rush” – concerning the Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 edge, that is.

According to SoyaCincau, Samsung Malaysia Mobile & IT VP Lee Jui Siang has said that its Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 edge has sold out and they are restocking them as soon as possible to keep up with demand. Keep in mind that Malaysian customers have only had access to the Galaxy S6 edge for two days (pre-orders excepted).

While Malaysia seems to favor the Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 edge, United Arab Emirates (UAE) customers are gobbling up both the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge – although customers seem to favor the S6 edge over its “normal” sibling at a rate of 65% to 35%. Eros Group CEO Deepak Babani notes the exciting sales in the UAE:

Our first allotment of 22,000 units has been completely sold out and we are waiting for the second lot. The second allotment is expected to arrive in the next couple of days. We saw 65 percent of inquiries for the S6 Edge and 35 percent for the S6 model. If the same ratio continues in the UAE, we may face shortages for the S6 Edge model.

The Eros Group is the only Galaxy S6 and S6 edge distributor in the UAE.

It appears as though the Galaxy S6 edge is creating its own “Edgeian” culture (credit goes to SamMobile forum member XEDNYL04 for coining this term).

Verizon Galaxy Note 3 on sale for $279.95 via eBay

The Galaxy Note 4 and now the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have stolen the hearts and wallets of diehard Samsung fans, but the Note 3 is still one fabulous device. When it was unveiled by Samsung in September 2013 (with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch), Samsung fans rushed to buy it as usual. With its 5.7-inch display with Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080p), 13MP back camera, 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM, 32GB of storage with a 64GB-capable microSD card slot, digital stylus with in-built functionality, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, it was (and still is) a multitasker’s dream come true.

EBay now has the Verizon Galaxy Note 3 on sale for $279.95, a fitting price for a device that is about 19 months old. Now that Verizon just updated the Note 3 to Android 5.0 Lollipop, you’ll also get that Galaxy Note 4 feature that lets you copy and paste images and text simultaneously.

You must remember in making this purchase, however, that the Note 3 listed on eBay is refurbished and “is a B+ stock item, meaning that unit is in good cosmetic condition and may have minor scrapes or scratches since it’s been handled,” the seller information reads. The Note 3 is 19 months old and Samsung is no longer manufacturing Note 3 devices.

This eBay Note 3 deal is ideal for someone who has a badly damaged smartphone and needs a new Verizon device to finish out a current contract, a first-time Verizon customer who intends to start a contract, or an off-contract Verizon customer who’s tried the Galaxy S series and wants to take the plunge into Samsung’s Note series.

Free Samsung Galaxy tablet with Virgin Media broadband bundle

Companies often tout their products as excellent deals in and of themselves, but there are times when throwing in a mobile device from a giant manufacturer can sweeten the deal. UK broadband, mobile phone, home phone, and TV services provider Virgin Media has decided to play its cards in this fashion, sweetening its 152Mbps broadband deals by throwing in a free Samsung Galaxy tablet with the purchase of either the Big Kahuna or Big Daddy broadband packages.

The tablet in question is a Samsung Galaxy tablet – you need only look at the device on the company’s main page to see Samsung’s signature all over it – but Virgin Media doesn’t reveal exactly what specific Samsung model this tablet is. The price the company provides, £139.99 (or $209 USD) matches the same price of the Galaxy Tab 4 in the US, a tablet that retails here for about $200. You can also see the Tab 4 on both sides of the webpage (left and right), although they still don’t give a complete picture of the device.

While the tablet in question remains debatable, it is nice to see Virgin Media throw in a Samsung Galaxy tablet — which is sure to see an increase in customers who sign an 18-month agreement for either broadband package. You don’t have long to take advantage of the deal however, since you only have until Wednesday, April 22nd, to grab it.

Samsung sits atop smartphone market share in Q1 2015

It’s been said that Samsung has had a hard time recapturing its “former glory.” Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has cut into Samsung’s budget-end sales, and Apple (at the end of 2014) had overwhelmed high-end smartphone market sales. Even in the US, LG’s market share rose from less than 1% to 8% in the country by year’s end, due in large part to the success of the Samsung rival’s LG G3.

That was the case until the end of Q1 2015. Research firm TrendForce reports that Samsung took the top spot for worldwide smartphone market share at Q1’s end, with Samsung capturing 27.8% of smartphone market share as opposed to Apple’s 19.9% for Q1 2015. Samsung’s market share rose 3.1% from the Korean manufacturer’s worldwide market share in Q4 2014, which sat at 24.7%. Lenovo, third behind Samsung and Apple in Q4, declined 1.1% in Q1 to now sit in fifth place. Huawei rose slightly (6.9% to 7%), moving up from fourth to third place, and LG made significant gains from 5.3% to 6.2% and is now in fourth place. Huawei leads smartphone market share in China and increased its popularity in Q1 2015 (from 18% to 19.2%).

The Samsung – Apple race for the top spot took an interesting turn at the end of 2014, but it seems as though Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have made a comeback in expected fashion. The largest surprise has been the Galaxy S6 edge, nabbing 50% of all new Galaxy S6 sales – a testimony and a sign that consumers are looking for new and interesting smartphone factors.

Tab S 2 receives Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Certification

The Galaxy Tab S won raving reviews after its release last August, with Samsung having achieved its lightest and brightest (resolution-wise) display we’ve seen yet. Its successor, the Tab S 2, has appeared in GFX benchmarks some weeks ago, but a new report suggests that the tablet is soon to arrive on the market.

Samsung has certified a device with the model number SM-T817V with Wi-Fi onboard on April 9, 2015. The SM-T817V is close in model number to the SM-T815 device we’ve seen in benchmarks several weeks ago, leading us to believe that the 9.7-inch Tab S 2 is on its way. The Tab S 2 (9.7-inch), alongside of its Wi-Fi certification, has also been certified to provide Bluetooth 4.1, the latest in Bluetooth low-energy technology.

The Bluetooth certification is where things turn interesting. While the SM-T815 model number is certified on April 9, 2015, there is an SM-T815C device certified the following day (April 10, 2015), with an SM-T817V and an SM-T817A certified on April 10th and April 16th, respectively. We do know that Samsung does release different model numbers for different variants of each device, and the same could be said for these four tablet model numbers.

The Tab S 2 is expected to continue Samsung’s cutting-edge tradition, with Samsung bringing its 4:3 aspect ratio to its high-end tablets and small-end tablets this year. This means that the 2014 Tab S resolution of 2,560 x 1,600p will give way to a 2048 x 1536p tablet this year, matching the resolution of Apple’s iPad Air 2. The Tab S 2 will also feature a 2MP front camera, 8MP back camera, a 1.9Ghz, octa-core processor (perhaps the Exynos 7420 or the Exynos 5433), 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Android 5.0.2 Lollipop is onboard.

The Tab S told us to “tab into color,” and we’re sure the Tab S 2 will exceed expectations. Samsung may give the Tab S a summer 2015 release, but it could be August before we see it arrive to market. Stay tuned to SamMobile as we bring you more details on the Tab S 2.

Fido Canada and Virgin Mobile Canada now stocking Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 edge devices just launched worldwide last Friday (one week ago from today), but some customers have had to wait because some carriers have had to wait.

While Rogers, TELUS, and Bell Canada all had first dibs on their devices, Fido Canada and Virgin Mobile Canada had to “take a number” to wait for their turn to start stocking and selling Samsung’s latest. Fortunately, that wait ends today. If you’re a Canada resident and are willing to sign a two-year agreement with either carrier, then you’re in luck: both devices are now available for purchase from these two carriers.

Fido Canada currently has the off-contract Galaxy S6 edge selling for $850 off-contract, $650 with a standard two-year agreement, $550 with a two-year Smart plan, and $350 with a two-year MAX plan. The $350 MAX price is for the 32GB, since Fido’s only selling the 32GB Galaxy S6 edge for now. Fido’s Galaxy S6 will retail for $750 off-contract, $550 with a standard two-year agreement, $450 with a two-year Smart plan, and $250 with a two-year MAX plan. The $250 MAX deal is for the 32GB model, and the 64GB and 128GB models on the MAX plan will cost $360 and $470, respectively.

Virgin Mobile Canada is only selling the 32GB Galaxy S6 edge in Black Sapphire and White Pearl, with customers paying $829.99 for the month-to-month agreement or $349.99 on a Platinum Plan (requires two-year agreement). The Galaxy S6 will cost $729.99 on the month-to-month agreement, or $249.99 with a Platinum two-year plan. Virgin Mobile’s got a few other perks involved, such as a $250 credit when you trade in your old smartphone as well as free activation for your new Galaxy S6 or S6 edge (activation fee waiver for a limited time only). Keep in mind you’ll pay $4.99 for the SIM card charge, however.

You’d have to be out of this galaxy to buy this Galaxy

The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge have highlighted Samsung’s sophisticated side, one that some reviewers and analysts have been waiting to see for years. The statement “Apple-level polish” has been used to describe the Galaxy S6 edge by one reviewer, with others finding an interest in the two new models that hadn’t been present since earth knows when. Reports continue to pour in that suggest that Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge should’ve been the flagship device, with daily selling-out numbers confirming the same.

Well, one retailer in particular has decided to take the Galaxy S6 edge hype to a whole new level: one that starts in this galaxy but ends in another. Kickmobiles Ltd. has placed a special edition 128GB Gold Platinum Galaxy S6 edge on eBay that retails for the premium price of $7,989. You’re reading the price right: this phone retails for the price of about two or three months’ income from your daily job!

You may think to yourself, “you’d have to be out of this galaxy to buy this Galaxy,” but there’s a reason behind the insanity. The phone is not the only surprise you get inside the box, since you also get a free wireless charging pad, Clear View cover, custom engraving voucher, along with a Samsung BlueHouse Invitation.

The Samsung BlueHouse Invitation is the key to this mysterious sale by Kickmobiles. The BlueHouse Invitation points to an exclusive club that allows certain members to preview Samsung’s latest technology before it officially arrives on the market. The box in which the phone is placed says “Next is 1/500,” a clear reference to the exclusivity of this Galaxy S6 edge (and the club behind the invitation). The club is “invitation-only,” meaning that one must have an invitation in order to become a previewer of Samsung’s cutting-edge technology. Even the color of the device seems to be more bronze than it does Gold Platinum. Though there is no bronze Galaxy S6 edge, the bronze color may point to its exclusivity and rarity.

We have a feeling that the 128GB Galaxy S6 edge being sold here doesn’t cost $7,989; rather, the device costs what a normal 128GB GS6 edge costs, but the BlueHouse Invitation eats up the majority of the retail price in this sale. $8,000 for a Galaxy S6 edge is a heck of a buy, but having an exclusive membership and early access to Samsung devices (for the Samsung faithful) is, like the Galaxy S6 edge, worth the cost.
