Sprint’s latest Galaxy S6 edge update is all about fixing bugs

The third largest mobile carrier in the United States, Sprint, today released an update for the Galaxy S6 edge that’s just going to fix some bugs that users have been experiencing. Sprint has only released this update for the Galaxy S6 edge, so folks who own the Galaxy S6 on the network shouldn’t keep their fingers crossed for the update.

It didn’t move the device up from Android 5.0.2, so don’t expect to get any new features. The incremental update will only fix bugs so basically all of the magic will be happening behind the scenes, users won’t see anything new once their device is updated. Before Sprint rolled out this update, AT&T released a new update of its own for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, though the carrier has still not provided a changelog for the new release. Software version G925PVPU1AOE2 is rolling out now over-the-air for the Galaxy S6 edge on Sprint and it weighs in around 130MB.

AT&T releases a new software update for the Galaxy S6

It appears that AT&T has released a new software update for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge in the United States. This is an unexpected update since the carrier recently updated these handsets to Android 5.0.2. AT&T has not yet revealed precisely what’s new in this latest software update, there’s no changelog yet and the devices’ support pages have also not been updated. The update is around 237MB in size and is currently rolling out over-the-air.

AT&T is most certainly not releasing Android 5.1 for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, which is certainly going to be the next major update for these handsets. We’ve already reported about the fact that Samsung is currently developing this update and earlier today it was reported that Android 5.1 for the Galaxy S6 is expected to arrive next month. As far as this latest update from AT&T is concerned, we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information and will let you know as soon as it comes in.

Samsung to conduct a free workshop for developers interested in making apps for Gear VR on May 20

Samsung needs support from developers in order to make the Gear VR a robust virtual reality platform, it has already teamed up with various media outlets to create VR content for the headset. In order to introduce new developers to the headset Samsung will be conducting a free workshop in Mountain View California on May 20 for those developers who are interested in making apps for Gear VR.

The workshop will take place at the Samsung Developer Connection offices from 12 pm to 2:30 pm PST. It’s aimed at developers who already have experience in making apps for Android and/or apps made with the Unity game engine but they’ve never made an app before for the Gear VR. Attendees will create basic components required of a Gear VR app at the workshop and will also learn about Oculus recommendations and requirements, how to optimize their projects to run on mobile and some best practices such as how to design for a better user experience. By the end of the workshop the attendees will have created a splash screen and connected it to a main scene, attendees will also receive instructions on how to complete a 360 degree image viewer.

Attendees will have to bring a laptop with Android development environment up and running as well as Unity and Oculus SDK, they will be provided with a Gear VR and Galaxy Note 4 for use during the workshop.

Samsung offering Avengers back covers for the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy S6 in the Philippines

Samsung has partnered up with Marvel to promote its devices alongside the company’s latest film, Avengers: Age of Ultron. They’ve also confirmed that an Iron Man-version of the Galaxy S6 is being developed and will be released soon. Recently they launched a promotion for Galaxy Note 4 customers in the United States, anyone who picked up the handset between May 4 and June 1 will receive four Avengers themed Galaxy Note 4 cases. A similar campaign has now been launched in the Philippines.

With every new purchase of either the Galaxy A5 or the Galaxy S6 customers will receive Avengers themed back covers, this promotion runs from May 6 to May 24. Customers will have to purchase their units from either Samsung Experience Stores or participating authorized Samsung resellers across the country to get the covers. Galaxy A5 customers will get two free Avengers back covers from authorized reseller stores and Samsung Experience Stores, 1 Avengers character per cover. Those who purchase the Galaxy S6 from Samsung Experience Stores will receive one free Avengers Clear Back Cover with four interchangeable films with one character per film.

Samsung reportedly wants to team up with Microsoft on HoloLens

Earlier this year in January, Microsoft announced a new wearable gadget called HoloLens which is basically a holographic computer that’s built into a headset. With HoloLens the user can interact with holograms within an environment such as a room, to make that happen Microsoft used high-definition lenses and spatial sound technology while the headset has been built in such a way that it doesn’t need to be connected to a PC. It’s merely a prototype at this point in time but Microsoft has confirmed that HoloLens will be released to the public around the same time it releases Windows 10 for consumers.

According to a new report out of Korea, Samsung wants to team up with Microsoft on HoloLens to explore the limitless possibilities that this technology offers. A source cited in the report claims that Samsung might see HoloLens’ technology as a crucial component for future healthcare and medical devices. This partnership may be beneficial for both Samsung and Microsoft because the Korean company certainly has more expertise in processors and sensor chips, leaving Microsoft free to leverage its software expertise to create an industry standard with HoloLens.

It’s too soon to say what fruit this partnership might bear because so far no confirmation has come in from either Samsung or Microsoft.

Samsung’s Clear View case for Galaxy S6 and S6 edge responsible for scratches on the screen?

Samsung has released a number of official cases and covers for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. One of such cases and covers is the Clear View case, which has a transparent flip cover, letting you see what’s on the display and it can even register touch inputs. That’s great, isn’t it? However, all is not well with the case. Apparently, people are facing issues with the Clear View case, as it is scratching the display of the device, even though it is supposed to save the device from scratches in the first place.

A Galaxy S6 edge user has posted pictures of his device on XDA forums, and you can see a number of scratches on the display. Apparently, the device is just two weeks old, and he started using the Clear View case from the first day itself. In spite of the user’s best efforts to save the device from scratches, he is facing this issue. Annoyed with the issue, the user has contacted Samsung UK, and is awaiting a reply. He has advised others to not use the Clear View case for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. We have faced this issue ourselves, and both our devices have scratches on the screen due to this case.

Apart from this, the case also lacks functionality. We experienced that the case doesn’t add any functionality other than answering the calls and viewing notifications. It doesn’t let you interact with notifications, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of a touch sensitive clear view cover. Looks like this product from Samsung is a huge failure. Galaxy S6 edge vs a Desert Eagle? You know who wins

Drop tests are all well and good, but there’s no arguing the fact that some people take things too far when they start shooting at a new phone and capture the entire thing on video. The Galaxy S6 edge’s curved glass and metal design isn’t something you would call rugged, and when the phone meets a Desert Eagle pistol, well, you have to see it to believe it.

Using a Phantom Flex4K camera, the guys over at dbrand (maker of skins and cases for smartphones) called in a shooting expert to square off with the Galaxy S6 edge. We’ve seen smartphones being shot with guns before, but we’re not sure we have ever seen a device get as utterly destroyed as the S6 edge did when the bullet met its target. It’s painful to see such a beautiful and costly device get blown to kingdom come, but the video is also a treat to the eyes thanks to the slow-mo effect and the detail captured by the aforementioned camera.
