Import listings reconfirm water-resistance on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge

The return of water-resistance to the Galaxy S line has been looking more and more certain with all the leaks and rumors around the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and we’re now getting a confirmation that the feature is indeed part of the S7 duo. Over on the import tracking site Zauba are listed several waterproof components for the SM-G930 and SM-G935, which are the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge as we have known for a long time.

Numerous waterproof components, such as a waterproof mic and SIM tray, are mentioned for the Galaxy S7, and something called a waterproof tape for the Galaxy S7 edge. These were all imported to India at the end of January and around early February for testing, and it’s likely these components will be used in the retail units that are expected to go on sale in the first half of March. Of course, do keep in mind that these devices will simply be water-resistant and not fully waterproof, so taking them along with a swim is something that Samsung is not likely to recommend (though they should be water-resistant enough to be used underwater for a photo or two.)

In case you missed it, we also got our first live look at the Galaxy S7 from the front, side and the back yesterday. We’re expecting a lot from the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, and it looks like resistance to one of the elements is sure to be among the allures of Samsung’s next big things.

Latest Sprint promo offers $200 off the Galaxy S6 or the Galaxy Note 5

Given that the Galaxy S7 will be arriving in the near future it’s understandable that carriers would want to move as much inventory of the current flagship as they possibly can. No wonder Sprint’s latest promo is offering $200 off the Galaxy S6, this promo also applies to the Galaxy Note 5. All new and existing customers can avail this offer and get $200 credit against purchase or lease of the aforementioned handsets provided they trade-in their existing smartphone.

The smartphone that’s going to be traded in has to be in working condition and the customer must own that device, it can’t be leased. Existing Sprint subscribers who want to take advantage of this promo have to be eligible for an upgrade. Once the $200 value is applied the 32GB Galaxy S6 costs $9.75 per month to lease and the Galaxy Note 5 just $16.67 per month. The offer is available via Sprint retail stores and runs through March 3, 2016.

Samsung trademark hints towards ‘Always On Display’ mode on the Galaxy S7

It appears that Samsung has filed an application to trademark the term ‘Always On Display’, which points towards the presence of such a feature in its upcoming smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. It was suggested in a recently released report from VentureBeat that the next-generation flagship smartphones from the company would feature always on displays.

The South Korean smartphone giant has filed an application with the USTPO and requested to trademark the term ‘Always On Mode‘. Even though the term ‘Always On Display’ sounds very generic, Samsung clearly wants to protect it as the feature might be used in the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge.

Since Super AMOLED displays have self-emitting pixels, they consume power only while displaying the content. Hence, it can be used to display vital information such as time, date, weather, messages, news, calendar entries, or notifications while consuming very little power.

Apparently, this feature uses just one percent of charge from the battery every hour, and the Galaxy S7 devices are expected to be equipped with larger batteries. Nokia (Glance Screen) and Motorola (Ambient Display) have already used a similar feature in their smartphones, and it’s good to know that Samsung is finally thinking to bring it to its future smartphones.

These can include major updates, which bring a newer version of the OS to a particular device, or minor ones that improve performance and stability and fix bugs. The Galaxy S7 might just have leaked in the flesh

It was bound to happen at some point, and it just did: We’re getting our first look at a live version of what could be the Galaxy S7. A leaked image shows the back of the Galaxy S7 in the flesh, and the source of the image has also revealed – confirmed, more like – numerous specs of the device.

The image certainly looks legit – the camera hump is gone, as rumors had suggested, and the phone curves at the back to either side. The camera module is colored like the phone itself, which is something Samsung started doing with its flagships in 2015, though the back doesn’t look like it is made of glass. That is likely because this is a prototype – after all, Samsung has been doing a great job at confusing people with various prototypes for a while now. It’s mentioned that the phone now has a magnesium metal frame instead of an aluminium frame.

According to the source, the Exynos version of the S7 has 15 percent better performance for both CPU and GPU, and both the Exynos and Snapdragon variants will come with a high-quality audio DAC (ESS Sabre 9018, the same as the one on the LG V10). The battery life is on par “with last year Note’s line”, and the battery can charge from 0 to 80 percent in an astoundingly low 30 minutes, making the recently rumored 100 minute charging time from zero to full a little hard to believe, unless the phone really does take 70 minutes to reach the final 20 percent of charge. It’s certainly possible though, if you are getting 80 percent of charge in just 30 minutes.

Water-resistance is once again mentioned, and also mentioned is the f/1.7 aperture of the 12-megapixel Britecell rear camera sensor. The Galaxy S7 will be priced at 16.49 million dong (roughly $740) and the S7 edge at 19.9 million dong (roughly $890), at least in Vietnam; the prices more or less match what we had exclusively leaked. The country will reportedly see an official introduction of the two devices on March 3, followed by a release on March 18th. According to previous leaks, the US and Europe are set to see a release a week earlier on March 11.

Vietnam has been the source of a few such leaks before, so we are inclined to believe this is indeed an actual Galaxy S7, even if it is a prototype. It’s also interesting to note that all the rumored features – like water-resistance and great battery life – have been iterated again and again, so it does look like all of it will make it into the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Verizon’s Galaxy Note 4 receives software update with performance optimisations

Verizon had released the Android 5.1.1 update last month to Galaxy Note 4 units on its network. Now, the carrier has started rolling out a new software update, which bumps up the software version on the Galaxy Note 4 to LMY47X.N910VVRU2BPA1, but the Android version stays at 5.1.1 (Lollipop).

This update optimises device performance, fixes known bugs, and applies latest security patches. The update should hit Verizon’s Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910V) shortly, but if you are feeling impatient, you can manually check for the update by visiting the settings menu on the device.

The Galaxy Note S Pen might act as a smartphone stand one day

There have probably been instances where you had wished you could just prop up your smartphone and view some media content without having to hold on to the phone. It would be great if smartphones would come with built-in kickstands, but that would mean compromising on the design – no one wants a metal or glass phone with a kickstand sticking out at the back, do they?

Well, Samsung might be working on a solution for this, at least for the Galaxy Note lineup. One of the Korean giant’s patent applications – discovered by Patently Mobile – shows how the S Pen on a Galaxy Note could be made to double up as a stand. It’s a neat idea for a smartphone lineup that is partly aimed at media consumption – the S Pen will bend at a point somewhere near the middle at different angles and let the device stand up in landscape, letting users enjoy the content on the screen without holding on to their Galaxy Note.

As Patently Mobile notes, the mechanism will work in such a way that the S Pen gets locked inside the phone when the stand is used – the lock is disengaged when the pen is bent back into a single piece, after which the user can take out the S Pen for regular stylus usage or slot it inside the phone. After the special case that could bring the S Pen to every smartphone, this is yet another interesting experiment on the stylus. It’s also a sign Samsung isn’t yet ready to put an end to the Galaxy Note lineup, as it continues to work on making the S Pen more useful and accessible than it currently is.
